Why JOKER is overrated

Let's talk about JOKER's debts to Martin Scorsese and its regressive portrayal of mental illness.

@@UNKN0WNN.vBro there's a difference between a different interpretation of a character and a completely different character. It's like me naming a movie Batman but not having him be a crime fighting vigilante. That's not Batman. Every Joker interpretation has been different but they're still the same character and all are criminal masterminds and the crime Prince of Gotham. Which author will never be. In fact Todd Phillips just posted saying don't expect him to become the crime Prince of Gotham in Joker 2.

Man, that quote from Tarantino is rich. This coming from a man who once said, "I steal from every single movie ever made." Oh, and the overdose, adrenalin heart shot scene in Pulp Fiction, was a true story lifted from Scorsese's 1978 documentary "American Boy: A Portrait of Steven Prince." Steven tells this story, which is practically word for word of what happened in PF. You can find it on KZread.

I can't believe how much he spoke about it ultimately being about the importance of kindness. Where, Todd?? He really said with his full chest 'this movie will inspire the next generation of filmmakers' when so much of his work here is so blatantly stolen with none of the skill or insight of Scorsese, speaking of your deconstruction of how Scorsese uses certain techniques to either satirise or criticise his characters POV whilst inhabiting them compared to Phillips completely failing to do this was so well done. Another great video, I really enjoyed watching it and congratulations on finishing it! :)

    1. the parts where it tells you kindness is important are: a) the hallucinations arthur has with his crush, along with the scene where he is in her apartment and she is kind to him even tho he broke in. b) the part where he kills his co-worker who framed except for Randel the little guy who never did anything wrong to him ! c) the part where the guy who brought up his file was polite when he said he wasn't allowed to show it and even suggested help. it's done with something called subtly. 2. he didn't exactly rip off, just because something is similar that doesn't mean it's a ripoff ! parallels are not plagiarism !

@@cappedminer369 except we can throw a, b and c in a trash can now, because this movie made sure that every scene has a potential to be arthur's delusion. which undermines the message and sabotages anything about its own plot that is worth investment. his crush wasnt even close to being kind to him. she freaked out when she saw him in her home and they made it clear what between them was just his imagination. we cannot say how many of those people truly wronged him. we cannot tell if those white collars were truly assaulting him or if he just killed them for some adrenaline and attention then imagined this way we cannot tell if randall set him up or gave the gun with truly good intentions but after he heard that this idiot brought it to a children's hospital, decided to wash his hands off of him. and what was this ''unkind'' act murray showed that arthur think he deserved a bullet to his face ? the story present you someone who just imagine things how ever he likes no matter if people treats him good or bad. so again ?

Arthur told his boss Randall game it to him to defend himself against the teens who attacked him 4. the unkind thing Murray did was invite him on the show SOLEY to make fun of him as he did when he showed his comedy performance one night 5. the reason Arthur has them is because of his injuries from his adopted moms abusive husband beatings and when he was chained to a radiator mixed with the head trauma !

I think the film is not really overrated, but it seemed such a big success because of the fact that it was welcomed by so many young boys who identify with the main character for some reason. Many young people are lonely and there is and epidemic of mental issues in modern society, so I understand why people would be attracted by this film. I don't have this mental issues so the Joker didn't speak to me that much. What is perceived as success may fade away with time, as demonstrated by some old films which were very popular at the time and now nobody even watch them.

22:51 I think every individual scene where something bad happens to him isn't too cheesy/unrealistic by itself. I think the thing that makes them cartoonish and unrealistic is the fact that it's the only thing that he has in his life and there isn't any single semblence of hope or good from humanity in his life at all. It feels like the world is just playing a joke on him and making his luck so terrible that there isn't a shred of common humanity or positive coping strategies for him

Regarding your criticism of the treatment of black women, no matter how much it makes sense it cannot be whitheld against the movie to knock it down as there are plenty more movies which flip the narrative to the other race for ex. in the batman all black people are put up as the ones trying to do the right thing (except Bruce and alfed ofc, tbf not even alfred because he does literally nothing in the movie), the new mayor candidate is black, gordan has been race swaped and kyle is black too.Even though things like this are hard to ignore after being noticed, they cannot be used as a valid criticism in my opinion. I'm not sure if you mentioned this to much detail, but I think one major thing that I disliked about Joker compared to Taxi Driver was its shooting/attempted shooting of the rich white dudes. In both Joker and Taxi Driver, the protagonists end up shooting a person they dislike for their own reasons. What Taxi Driver did really well was make the shootout "justified" by only using Travis's thoughts. Palantine represents unity and society, much like how Murray represents positive attention and fatherhood. Travis's attempted shooting of palantine represents him hating society and positive change, just like how Murray's shooting represents Joker's hate of being positively accepted. What makes Joker's shooting worse is that they have this unnecessary interaction where Murray makes fun of Arthur directly. Like... why? We already have the ingredients to make Arthur hate Murray. Arthur is ignored until he kills the subway dudes. He has already realized that maybe being hateful is the only way to get truly accepted. Having Murray mock him on TV seems like the film just really wants to shove into your face more bland justification for Arthur's shooting. The original message of disliking positive attention gets muddled with Murray mocking Arthur, the film just HAS to kick Arthur in the chest and scream "society bad!!!!" no matter what, even if it means stymying genuine character arcs. It's so annoying.

I agree Joker is extremely overrated (well made technically) but vastly shallow on story. I just think it's a huge misstep as a Joker origin movie, I do not buy this guy being the Joker. Joke is theatrical, and seemingly nuts, but he's also smart, and cunning, something not present in this movie. I also somewhat agree with the racial criticisms, but am not naive enough to buy into all "woke" mentality. I mean it's Hollywood mostly controlled by elitist vile people, much like our governments, so yeah expect superficial handling of social issues. Black Panther is overrated crap too, but it checks boxes depending on who cares about what boxes are being checked. I just want a good movie, not a movie all about identity politics. It's fine if it's in there, but it better feel purposeful, and should never take you out of the movie.

There are movies I like that I know are not very good, or even terrible. the joker is easily the second most overused comic book character in history right behind batman and i legitimately do not understand the characters appeal he's literally just some psyckopathic clown what at all about him stands out amongst a plethora of other villains

"What do you get when you cross a mentally ill loner, with a society who treats him like trash?" All the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face. I've only seen Joker once but that line always stuck out to me. It disgusts me to no end. It tells us all we need to know. I know there's probably many more examples of this but this is just the one I've focused on. Just horrendous writing.

Ok, I finished this video and have to say it is the most comprehensive analysis of Joker I've seen! All the reasons it is a bad film are laid out here, excellent work! They are reasons I thought of on my own, plus some I hadn't. There is another I thought of that, curiously, I haven't seen anyone else speak of tho. In addition to my own short essay length criticism of Joker, I can direct people to watch this terrific analysis (and some other good criticisms) 😉

it is. the detective aspects handled terribly, the love interest uninteresting as hell, and the villain getting his competence from plot armor. i gave it a 8/10 sheerly for its casting and style

Other problems with the film: It reinforces the false, harmful and outdated stereotype that abused children are doomed to become abusers themselves which often leads ta victim-blaming,demonization of the mentally ill and social outcasts. Its portrayal of the economic and political anxieties of the underprivileged and mentally ill in the Reagan era are extremely shallow and reinforce the social conservatism of Frank Miller,Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan. Abuse is frequently talked about and depicted yet the psychological effects which deserve ta be treated with sensitivity and empathy are instead simply background noise ta move the plot forward. Narcissism isn`t genetic. The adoption system did not work that way in the `40s. Most of the characters are unlikable, I know that`s the point but it is still lazy writing. Schizophrenic episodes usually are not as predictable as The Film depicts. Young Bruce being emotionally stunted even before his parents` murder is just weird.

you know whats crazy? you could probably double the videos time. after 90 minutes this movie still has issues to point out. this movie tried so little to be a comic book movie, its almost became as big of an issue of it trying so hard to be like a scorcese movie. just change the certain names(the title, the characters, the city, etc.) and write the exact same story... just try. you couldnt possibly see the same amount of praise its getting. you couldnt possibly see joaqin's winning oscar. the only reason that not enough people considering that this movie is a taxi driver rip-off because on paper it based on another well established character. but on paper only. calling it ''based on'' is a generous take. arthur has no joker in it. he is not competent, he is not smart, he has victim complex, there is a concerning amount of age gap between him and his arch nemessis, he is not even pure evil. and it stayed that way up until the movie. and the cherry on top director said he might not even be joker but just be the inspiration for joker. which almost sounds another way of saying the narrative wasnt worth investigating so the writing just cornered itself. its either ''it was all his dream'' or ''this is happening, feel free to dislike the issues''. worst part is joker 2 might be just as self sabotaging as this one because now phillip know the fans will eat it up

Thank you, i waited a long time for this review! You nailed it. When you are surrounded by non critical thinking Joker Lovers and you find this video, its golden! On top, i think Phillips self congratulatory domina has gotten unbearable. This channel needs more viewers! PS: Maybe its because i am over 35, but Jack Nicholsons Joker is still my favorite.
