Japanese selvedge raw denim is considered to be the greatest denim on Earth. It also may be the most adjective heavy denim on Earth. Today we are looking into Iron Heart, specifically the 21oz denim used on their 634S jeans (and others as well of course). What makes Iron Heart so special? Is there anything about them that IS special? What makes them built for motorcyclists or bikers? What about all of these other brands using incredibly heavy denim: Naked & Famous, Strike Gold, Momotaro, etc.?!
Find out...TODAY!

    I own 2 pairs of pants. They are both Iron Heart 25oz. What convinced me to invest in these was the free repairs for life (oh, and having 35-37" inseams - unheard of in Japanese denim). I already have over 1000 wears on one of them, and more than 300 on the other. They are pants I could imagine wearing the next couple decades. Their 25oz is the best on the market. Tightly woven, and less prone to cracking then other brands. It's nice to simplify my wardrobe by owning very few, but only the best, clothes.

    Owner of IH 777s 14OD and it's true, they feel so different compared to any of my other denim and I own pairs from Kato, Momotaro, Samurai, Oni and Naked & Famous and have tried Brave Star. IH is soft and comfy, there is almost next to no break in time needed and at least from my black OD pair the fades have actually been really fast and are looking great. The quality is on point, every stitch, hem stitch and so on is perfect...nothing is loose, or coming out or anything at all compared to even my nicer Samurai 710 organic cotton pair. I also own two different denim jackets from IH and the quality is equally as good and the customer service from IH UK's site was great, they double checked everything with me regarding sizing and I do love them despite the expensive price tag. One last thing not mentioned, IH jeans have lined back pockets too, they feel nice and soft when you reach in to grab a phone or wallet, not many brands do this.

    @@amossutandi Not an expert but I imagine that can also be a fit issue instead of just straight up quality. If the jeans are on the tighter side and you wear them a touch low waisted, it'll put stress on the seams in the crotch. That said, the brands you tried are a world away from Iron Heart. There's a big jump in quality (at least from what i've noticed) from higher end department store brands to the brands mentioned in this video.

    I honestly like numerous Japanese denim brands; Samurai, The strike Gold, PBJ for their different textures (see the hank-dyed natural indigo in the Aizome AI PBJ!), some colors (see the Samurai Uguisu), and others. But if there was only one brand I could buy, it would be a super close battle between Samurai and IH, and IH would most likely win that battle. I am currently wearing one pair on jeans every day as a sort of exercise in minimalism. This is the Indigo-Black IH-777-21oz. And yes, this thing is a beast and yet it is indeed super soft in now time, molds extremely well to your shape, and has a level of construction and thereby of comfort that is (to me) unparalleled. Let alone all the fantastic shirts and jackets they are producing. The Kersey shirt is just a beautiful and SUPER comfy piece of clothing. Their flannels are top, the denim shirts amazing, and (as you mentioned) their overdyed garments STUNNING. I have an 18oz OD CPO, that I love. So yes, IH is special.

    This video definitely got me more interested in Iron Heart, I like durable clothing but am not really interested in more characterful denim with lots of slub or nep. Iron Heart is interesting to me because it's slow fading and very uniform, which is the opposite approach of most raw denim brands. My only experience with heavyweight denim so far is the Unbranded 22 oz Big Slub jacket and it has made me appreciate how great 14-17 oz denim feels by comparison.

    I don't like IH because of what seems to be an intentional proclivity towards fading. I know one of the things you said was that they are somehow more colorfast, but that is not what I see on the street. Basically, the fading seems accelerated for the purpose of winning fading competitions when all I want is a long lasting, soft fading, comfortable selvedge denim. I would now add stretch to that list, as well.

    So for me the million dollar question is this. How are they on sizing? Since they’re a Japanese brand are they sized differently? I normally wear about a 36/34, waist/inseam. The question is, if I buy that from the website am I getting that in American sizes? I know sometimes when you buy from certain countries even in Europe, the sizing is different.

    I’m pretty deep into denim and I loved the iron heart denim fabric but the construction wasn’t there for me. The pocket bags got holes in 3 days of wear to my office job from a smooth leather wallet in my pocket. Really wish the legendary customer service would have done anything but both the retailer and IH directly said that’s just how they are. The inseams of IH aren’t felled like other higher end brands as well. I’ve moved to Freenote for all my denim needs, haven’t had any issues, and the Trabuco cut is fantastic. I’m sure I’ll circle back to a pair someday though.

  • @edwingonzalez7691

    For me it was just a sizing issue, no matter what cut I tried. Either the rise was too low and it bit, or the thighs weren't breathable. Trying bigger sizes only gave me extra fabric in the waist, and spots that don't need extra fabric, that made me look goofy.

    I read a lot about the pocket bags recently and didn't know they failed so much. I wonder why IH doesn't beef up the fabric there? I also read a post on why they don't use felled seams, apparently they think other brands did it mainly to be different than Levi's but didn't feel it offered enough benefit to make the seams thicker

  • @calebmorse

    @calebmorse

    2 ай бұрын

    @@TheIronSnail I was told by IH the pocket bag fabric was thin and delicate to prevent it from bunching or being too thick combined with the denim. From talking with the Freenote Cloth guys at Standard and Strange they said it's because good quality pocket bag material like they use is something like 6x more expensive. The felled seam thing makes a difference in durability from what I can tell. When the surged stitching on the inseam starts to wear the pants just start to come apart. The felled seam is more durable since it has more holding it together.

  • @TheIronSnail

    @TheIronSnail

    2 ай бұрын

    @@calebmorse Fascinating! Seems very strange to not beef up the pocket bags a little, maybe it's a relic from tighter fitting jeans being more popular? Either way it doesn't really make sense to me to go with pocket bags that thin. These IHs that I have now actually feel like the pocket bags are pretty robust but time will tell and I'll do a follow up when the time comes! The SS Freenote guys comment is pretty interesting -- I'm working on pocket bags now for the Snail jeans and 6x more expensive from IH would be pretty insane! I'm looking at some tiny small batch weird fabrics and I don't even know if I could find a material that would cost that much more than what I assume IH is using unless it was some type of wild cotton type/tiny custom order which I'd assume they'd mention in their description. We're doing some testing of different cottons, weaves, etc. and it seems like the greatest increase in durability is weight over cotton type so I'd assume Freenote uses a heavier fabric over one that's 6x more expensive (but I'd take their word over mine!). **Edit: just realized they mean IH may use really, really cheap pocket bag fabric. I truly have no idea what exactly they are using but it'd be very surprising based of how the IH team seems to be + since it's such a small amount of fabric per jean I can't imagine the savings would be anything too grand...but it does add up if you're selling thousands of jeans...** A felled seam is definitely stronger but I think it's due to the way the fabric is folded and stitched down as opposed to the serging. I'm not sure how often those seams are the point of failure before the fabric itself is. I think that's what IH was trying to say but I'm not entirely sure. My thoughts are they didn't use felled so that way they could cut down on bulk since felled 21oz would be an absolute monster of a seam between your legs -- seems like they were conscious about bulk outside of the fabric weight. Either way you convinced me to buy Freenotes so I can compare! Sorry for nerding out -- I'm in the midst of making jeans so I'm knee deep!
