Why Jake Gyllenhaal is the Bravest Actor of our Generation
Фильм және анимация
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of my favourite actors working today and from a very young age he’s been delivering some amazing memorable and relatable performances. I wouldn’t say he is an underrated actor, but in my opinion his work doesn’t quite get the recognition it deserves. So in this video we’re gonna be discussing his filmography, from Donnie Darko and Bubble Boy to Nightcrawler and Prisoners. Let's find out what makes Jake Gyllenhaal such a great performer.

The performance he gave in Nightcrawlers is easily the best of his career and one of the greatest pieces of acting of all time in my opinion. Obviously the film is amazing, but Jake elevates it with his acting. You can really see the turmoil, the bigotry and the rage inside his eyes. It's not just that he didn't blink, it's all the subtle twitches; the eyes darting all over the place, scanning the room like a wolf, that make Lou such a menace. And somehow you still root for the psycho because he's so damn charismatic

For Nightcrawler especially he got snubbed. Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, or Benedict Cumberbatch could’ve been kicked for Gyllenhaal’s performance easily. I haven’t seen Theory of Everything, so I won’t say he definitely deserves to win, but I would probably even take him over Keaton in Birdman, who’s amazing in that.

Prob the main reason why I love that movie
Jake and Christian Bale are by far my favourite actors working today. They both just feel so incredibly genuine with their performances. All their characters feel like completely different people. People often name Leonardo DiCaprio as the best actor alive and while I think he’s a great actor, all his characters have that same thing going on. To me Leo is great at line delivering, similar to Denzel Washington. While Jake changes his expressions and entire body language to move and appear completely different. I’d absolutely love to see Jake and Christian go up against each other in a film. My mind automatically goes to something like Seven or Heat where one’s a cop who’s so distracted at stopping the other who’s tormenting him. Tom Hardy would fit in with this film too.
@nerychristian

Rober Pattinson is pretty good too.
@archerpool
10 ай бұрын
@@nerychristian I really like him, but I don’t put him in that category. I judge on numerous things, longevity and consistency being the key things. For example Matthew McConaughey has True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club which are 10/10, but in recent years most of his performances are closer to The Gentlemen which is just a good performance. Like we know what he’s capable of, but needs to show it more. I think Rob post Twilight had some films where he showed promise, but in the last six years has shown he’s really good, but Jake and Christian have been doing it for 20 years. Rob’s in the category below for me along with Ryan Gosling, Mahershala Ali, Riz Ahmed and Leonardo DiCaprio where I’ll just watch anything they’re in. I have another category where I’ll watch anything they do, but more for likability and charm. Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman and Paul Rudd for example. I have a lot more categories too, I’m a bit excessive.

Lil bro has not seen Denzel Washington in Fences
@archerpool
7 ай бұрын
@@MartinWasTaken “Lil bro” is probably older than you given you say “Lil bro” and I have seen Fences. Denzel was phenomenal in it, but for the most part Denzel’s characters are indistinguishable from each other. He’s one of the best at making line delivery appear natural, but his characters aren’t unique. There are exceptions, Fences, Philadelphia, Malcolm X, Training Day, but dialogue and circumstances aside, there’s no real difference between his performance as Ruben Carter and The Equalizer. John Q, Deja Vu, The Book of Eli, Flight, Unstoppable, The Taking of Pelham 123, Remeber the Titans, all these films the characters all have the same Denzelisms, you’re watching an actor not a performance of a character. That’s perfectly fine, he’s one of absolute best in the world at it, but you need characters to be completely different from one another on a consistent basis in order to be in that elite bracket.
Jake's comfortability, along with his upbringing with successful, but not famous industry parents, really shows in his public appearances. Confident, but not arrogant, funny, but not trying to get a laugh. He's comfortable as a person, you can tell. A rare trait for a good actor. Not to mention the man hasn't turned in a performance I haven't enjoyed, yet. He's been in bad movies, but he's always clearly been a professional, passionate actor. He puts everything into his roles, from mindless fun like "Bubble Boy", to meatier, grittier, harder roles like "Prisoners", "End of Watch", and "Nightcrawler". He really is proof that a great actor, that just does his job, works on improving his craft, and has a true, burning passion for his work can elevate an entire production.
He truly represents "acting range" masterfully
Jake's resume is insanely impressive. He deserves to be talked about amongst the greats (your Hanks, DiCaprio, etc). Sadly the movies he absolutely nails are lesser known to the Christopher Nolan or David Fincher vehicles that in the aftermath ensure the leads are smack in the spotlight. Probably among my top 3 favorite actors of all time that consistantly display top notch talent on screen. Just rewatched Nocturnal Animals and holy s#*t does it remind me that rewatching his earlier stuff will be well worth the time (actually Amy Adams as of late too while I'm on this film).
He and Hugh Jackman KILLED it in Prisoners. Like HOW neither won an Oscar for that movie is INSANE to me.

I do believe the “you have to be over 40” conspiracy for certain actors. Specifically consistently high-level actors like him usually get carrot-sticked for an Oscar. I think it’s because the Academy knows they will produce an academy level performance time and time over again. Like, the academy has a higher expectation for really good actors and make them wait. Feel like the same will happen with Timothee Chalamet, John Boyega, Andrew Garfield and Daniel Kaluuya.

The man has been robbed too many times I hope he does
Jake Gyllenhaal shaped me as a person and as an artist, many of ma favourite movies are the ones with him in the main role but I can never choose just one because all of them were so influential to me, but if I had to name a few that stand out to me are Donnie Darko, Prisoners, Enemy, Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals and one of these perfomances absolutely should've won him an Oscar, his career went down for me after 2016, they weren't bad movies, Life and Spider-Man are fun but they just don't hit the same as the ones I've named, nonetheless Jake Gyllenhaal remains one of the best actors of his generation and his almost uninterrupted back to back to back to back hits from 2004's The Day after Tomorrow to 2016's Nocturnal Animals is a insane line up of movies for just one actor, he simply just doesn't miss... I thought a video about actors who transitioned from blockbusters to indie art films like Robert Pattinson after Twilight, Daniel Radcliffe after Harry Potter and Andrew Garfield after Spider-Man would be interesting cause I always see people talking about it but nobody really goes in depth and I haven't really seen a video on this topic
watched source code the other day, and i forgot how much i adore this man
Definitely one of my favourite actors of all time never seen him put in a bad performance and I agree he's too good to be considered underrated but in 30 years I think he will be remembered as one of the greats.
I am so happy that Donnie managed to become successful despite the Schizophrenia.
His performance in "Nocturnal Animals" always seems wildly overlooked. Possibly because people either didn't get the movie, or didn't care. Fair enough. But playing 2 characters with all the layers of what the story was (in my opinion), he was absolutely spectacular. I could copy and paste this exactly for "Enemy" as well.
16:17 such a good line that sums up a really good character.

I love the video and listening to Jake in those brief moments point out what he believes is interesting as well as glimpses into process was fantastic. The only thing I would be careful for when doing future analysis videos is throwing around the term “Method Acting” which is a good term to use but wildly over used and not necessarily depicted accurately within given circumstances. When you said he went method to relate to the characters he’s simply looking within himself allowing himself to relate and using the dialogue, setting, etc, as clues to solve this puzzle and form behavior. I believe he is one of the best at truly doing, and having his perspectives clear, simple and specific. Method isn’t the end all be all but it is an umbrella for process. We as actors learn and use for ourselves that process. Great video!
I'm so glad you brought up Demolition. It really is so very underrated and beautifully acted.
