Why It's Dangerous to Look at the Sun During an Eclipse

NYU Langone ophthalmologist Nitish Mehta, who specializes in surgery to treat diseases of the vitreous, retina, and choroid areas of the eye, explains how permanent damage to the retina occurs and offers tips for how to enjoy the eclipse safely.

I think i found the answer, it's in the edit at the bottom. Og comment: Ye what's the difference between looking at it during an eclipse and when there isnt an eclipse? As a kid (20+years ago) i used to directly stare at the sun with my naked eye for several minutes sometimes, i could see the bright glowing ball directly. I mean ye when i closed my eyes the sun was imprinted in my vision making a blind spot, but it would go away after a few minutes or so and my eyes would readjust. Im not saying to do it, but my eyes are fine and have always been pretty good. Even when i do it these days. What's the difference? Are they just as bad as each other? Do they pose the same risk, or does watching an eclipse a lot more risky for some reason? Also what if it's partially cloudy and you can just about see it through the clouds? Edit: stumbled on the answer on Reddit. Feel free to correct us if the redditor is wrong lol basically when staring directly at the sun with your naked eyes the pupils constrict because it receives more light. this protects the eye and limits the light/damage the eye receives. However, during an eclipse eyes don't constrict as much since the middle is not as bright as the sun and much darker, but the light intensity and heat is about the same, it just travels around the moon. So because the eye doesn't constrict nearly as much it becomes much easier for the sun to damage your eyes. www.reddit.com/r/TikTokCringe/s/qxsGA6hWwX Random comments on Reddit always have the answers lol i didn't research it but it seems like a logical answer so I'll roll with it.

If you look at the sun you squint and your pupils contract from the light. During an eclipse it's dark so your eyes don't contract and all the residual light, including tons of UV rays goes straight into your eye

You can't look at a normal sun for more than a split second because it hurts your eyes. Because the moon blocks all or most of the sun, you can stare at the sun and it won't hurt your eyes while your looking. But it will long term. Just like staring at a regular sun (if you could) for a long period of time.

It doesn't only happen during eclipse It's always dangerous to look at the Sun even more so when it's not in the clips but when it's not an eclipse people don't stare up at the sun so they have to warn people not to look at the sun during an eclipse. If anything it's slightly less dangerous.

Looking directly at the sun can damage your vision whether our star is in eclipse or not, doesn't matter. Safety glasses that block UV and IR radiation should always be used whenever looking directly at the sun.

true, it's reasonably safe to look up during totality, but only during those few moments of total eclipse. if it's a partial eclipse where you are, then you need safety glasses to block out harmful UV rays when looking directly at the sun.

Ok, so when you go for eye exams, the turn the lights off, use a small pointed light to look into your eyes. How is this any different? Looking at the solar eclipse is said to not contract your pupils, cause of the darkness, but the eye exam is dark too. Then you have the suns light rays, and with the exam you have the bright focused light? So are eye exams causing damage to our eyes?

  • @mrbubble1YT
