Why It's a Relief to Follow a Leader with Malignant Narcissism | FRANK YEOMANS

Frank Yeomans discusses the primitive appeal of splitting - "We're good they're bad" - and what happens when a malignant narcissist is the leader of a group. Both Trump and Hitler are mentioned.
For a follow-up piece with Yeomans that elaborates on this topic, check out "Malignant Narcissism & Our Undoing as a Species": • Malignant Narcissism &...
We talked with Frank Yeomans about Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and how it can affect us on a personal and societal level.
Frank Yeomans is an expert clinician who makes use of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy in his practice treating NPD and BPD. In fact, he co-wrote the manual on TFP for Borderline Personality Disorder!

I have a friend with cPTSD and BPD. She was emotionally traumatized to the core. She believed a parent of hers may have had NPD. Now, she wonders if they have BPD that may have an overlap of a NPD shell bc this parent can be authentically empathy, but it fluctuates with critic and even hypocrisy. She has a trauma bond with the parent sadly...

Despite the potential link between mental health issues and dictatorial behavior, these topics are not always openly discussed or recognized in conversations about political leaders. This could be due to a lack of awareness about mental health in general, a focus on the actions and consequences of dictators rather than their psychological makeup, or a reluctance to delve into the complexities of mental health and power dynamics in political contexts. Ultimately, more research and discussion are needed to better understand the interplay between mental health and dictatorial behavior.

I've already had this general idea in my head, but never thought about it in this context. The idea that we can learn history, but then subjugate history to just that, history. Reading about the negative behaviors of past generations, we almost generalize that, we use to be that way, but are no longer racist, selfish, and destructive people. However, to be human is to encompass this in the totality of being human. Even if we can't see that negative behavior we exhibit, they are still there.

There are numerous factors that can contribute to an individual becoming a dictator. Some of the common reasons include: 1. Desire for power and control: Some individuals have a strong desire for power and control over others, which can lead them to seek positions of authority and ultimately become dictators. 2. Personal ambition: Many dictators are driven by personal ambition and a desire for recognition and glory. They may see becoming a dictator as a way to achieve their goals and fulfill their ambitions. 3. Ideological beliefs: Some individuals become dictators due to their strong ideological beliefs and the desire to impose those beliefs on others. They may believe that their ideas are the only correct ones and will do whatever it takes to enforce them. 4. Psychological factors: Certain individuals may have underlying psychological issues or personality disorders that contribute to their authoritarian tendencies. These individuals may struggle with empathy, exhibit manipulative behavior, or have a grandiose sense of self-importance. 5. Social and political factors: Societal unrest, economic instability, and political upheaval can create conditions that are conducive to the rise of dictators. Some individuals may seize on these circumstances to gain power and establish themselves as dictators. It is important to recognize that the path to becoming a dictator is complex and multifaceted, and there is no single explanation for why some individuals choose this path. Understanding the various factors that can contribute to the rise of dictators can help us better address and prevent authoritarianism in society.

Wow. I stumbled upon this site recently, and it is the best site I have ever seen on the subject of narcissism. I was raised by a narcissist. I am 60 and have been trying to understand them in order to understand myself for about 30 years. I asked my therapist recently whether narcissists actually enjoy inflicting pain on others. She said enjoy is not the right word. It's not pleasure as you or I would understand it, but they seem to get something from it. Temporary illusion of superiority and control? Gross. Sex crimes, for example, are not about sex but about power. Gross. Thank you for the excellent videos.

Everything was easy. He always Won, after 48 minutes he proclaimed "You're Fired" and they scripted next week's show. To massive popularity. he learned his audience. And flipped "You're fired " into "Lock her up". His tv audience said trump good, Everything else Bad. The easy answer. Whether it was true or false, legal or illegal, moral or immoral. Unfortunately Frank Yeomans understands nothing about politics, which has nothing to do with the idealised personalities he promotes. Great minds are able to simplify complex problems, by distilling the problem down to a key issue - often just one, possibly a mere erroneous attitude of mind is at the heart of a complex problem. Trump did that with politics. To call Hitler "grandiose" is ludicrous - he was IN FACT one of the most significant leaders and largest personalities in world history, he WAS grand (French : big), like Napoleon and Caesar. That's not a value judgement as to his morality. Grandiose people are insignificant people who think they are significant. I wonder if Yeomans has visited the Pyramids, and if so whether he dismissed Ramasses as "grandiose" too. He does not seem to understand that human history is created by complex personalities, not the sort of "perfect people" he idealises, who might make good book-keepers but never rise above mediocrity. Narcissists are the new Jews, they are being demonised and de-humanised everywhere on youtube. Very sinister. This is just a new buzz-word for what used to be called "selfish people" or "self-centred people". Still 100% human beings, but with less than perfect personalities. What proportion of the population has perfect personalities?

We should not be surprised at what we're seeing in the world - especially the political and business worlds, with sociopaths and narcissists reaching the most prominent positions. In a society that doesn't have a fairly uniform sense of right and wrong a great deal of traction is missing; if people don't have a sense of certainty about right and wrong they don't stand up to wrongdoing so much. Some badly damaged people are perfectly willing to lie, cheat, stab others in the back, turn on those who have helped but are now viewed as powerless and no longer useful achieving goals. I've personally seen this and it's disgusting. These people are capable of putting on a seductive mask that can suck people in. Before I go off track with that, I'll continue with my point that if a person is willing to do anything, and that person operates in an environment without significant checks & balances, that person is riding rails to the top that are greased for him or her. I believe we are experiencing that today.

Well said. And it doesn't matter whether the majority of people are good. Like the OP said, if there are no checks and balances on sociopaths and malignant narcissists, they will continue their unfettered rise to the top and those who comprise the good majority will be inconsequential. We live in a world which perfectly accommodates for the most ruthless, so long as their mask doesn't slip too much. The problem now is that Trump has made it acceptable to not even have to wear your mask of sanity, there are now no consequences for lying, belittling, demeaning, using totalitarian tactics (gassing and shooting people for a weird evangelical photo op). It has set a devastating precedent around the world now whereby if you don't win an election, you can simply refuse to acknowledge the results and tie up courtrooms for months until you get your way. Make no mistake, the US elected a malignant, narcissitic monster. The more disturbing thing is 74 million people were exposed to 4 years of psychological abuse and opted for 4 more years of it.

@@grandwonder5858 I would have to disagree just a bit. It seems that once again, you as well as others feel that the only reason a white person would vote for Trump is because they themselves are racists. I don’t know trumps heart in this matter, but as far as Hilary was concerned she was a garbage candidate. Two time Obama voters switched to Trump so I think that racism as a go to here is a bit over simplified. Are there racists in both camps, you bet, but to exclude even Biden from this charge ignores some of his history as well. I’m not saying he is one , but at 61 I have seen him send signals that could Indicate as much. If all you have to do is vote for Trump and boom, you are a racist, then I know “then you ain’t black” Biden is one for sure. Also, I don’t even know what to do with all this “ white oppression thing anymore in 2020 as I saw under Trump blacks and latinos rise economically until Covid-19 and even vote for him in ways that they have not voted for a Republican in years. Why did I myself vote for him? I grew up in Appalachia where I was as poor as most people in the inner cities only to hear for years that I was an oppressive bigot so among other things like the democrats threatening to overturn the Hyde amendment so that I would have to help kill babies in the womb, black babies included , I shrugged my shoulders and pulled the lever. I will leave it at that because space here limits long discussions, but we can certainly go beyond simply calling all white people racist. Please get more creative and smile, as a fellow American I really am on your side though maybe not politically.

In my view, the issue is one of fear, for example, of the unknown. Coupled with fear are professed Christians who are not actually in touch with the Christ within themselves. A reason for that is they have not done sufficient personal work to actually connect with the Christ, or God Consciousness, within them. In that state, people are "unconscious." Then, something happens, and people will either learn from the experience or not. Each of us grows through our journey in Life. The question is: will I learn from my experience or not? If I don't learn from my experience, then the same issue will come up, again, although it may come up with more force. May God be with each of us on our journeys through Life.

I came here for help just as many others have. Just keep in mind as you watch this video that these are the folks who want you to believe that their overproduced videos aren't scripted. There is a lot of truth here, but the bias wreaks. This is more of a hit piece than a help piece, though it isn't entirely undeserved.
