Why It Is Time To REVAMP Speedweek(s)

Speedweeks has been a point of concern for NASCAR fans over the last couple of years. What was once a multi week lead up to the biggest race in America now is merely a 5 day sprint that feels more in place for tradition’s sake rather than a needed aspect about the kickoff of NASCAR. This to me is why it is time to revamp Speedweek(s).

We almost saw Dale jr in 2003 sweep the whole speedweeks with a Clash win, duel win, bush series win, and I think he blew a tire and finshed 36th. But my point is if that he had won the 500 and swept the speedweeks it would've been historical. Now if someone were to win the Clash duel and 500 it wouldn't be the same since the Clash isn't at Daytona. If they bring it back to Daytona then we have the chance to witness the history Jr almost made.

I remember the days where we would get a whole week of action with practice for the 500, the bud shootout, the duels, and Daytona 500 qualifying along with the truck and XFINITY races. Now we barely get 2 practices for the 500. Speedweeks really needs to be speedweeks again.

At its peak from 2000-2004, Speedweeks was comprised of: Dash series ARCA Clash 500 qualifying The Duels Truck series IROC Xfinity series Cup series Like 7 different Cup practices alone It ran for 10 days from Friday through the following Sunday with cars on track most days. It was glorious. I miss it so much.

Practice is essential, not just to the Daytona 500, but all the events. Fans become better fans by watching on-track action, practice included. NASCAR can gloat about access to the drivers all they like, which is fine, but personally, what I like about Motorsport is watching racing drivers driving racing cars.

How about a Fanfest Day? One day during the week, from noon until 4:00 or 5:00 pm each team parks their car on pit road. Owners, drivers, crew chiefs and broadcasters would have to be there too. Then open the gates and let all the fans come down and talk, take pictures, get autographs, etc. Sponsors could give out free samples. Have merch trailers parked in the trioval. Being able to interact with these guys face-to-face would get fans more emotionally invested in the sport.

Concept idea for the Clash. 20-50 lap shootout at Daytona International Speedway, IN REVERSE. Instead of going counter-clockwise around the track and turning left, you're going clockwise and turning right. Just for fun, maybe even put the short track package on the track, instead of the superspeedway package.

But speedweeks isn’t dead, nascar just isn’t the focus of it anymore. Volusia, golden isles, Ocala, east bay (rip), new Smyrna, all of those places are still racing 2 weeks straight.

I wish they would bring back speedweeks the way it was years ago. Auto racing, especially NASCAR, has been the only sport I've ever took a big interest in, and the preseason testing, Rolex 24, the practices and the ARCA season opener just before the Daytona shootout, help to pass the time and build anticipation for the return of NASCAR. There was even one preseason test session that had a big one wreck that took out most of the cars. Only a few cars were left for the next session. That was in the early 2010's.

Aside from NASCAR condensing the schedule, I think the reason speedweeks died was basically because we got 4 of the same race. The clash, the duels, and the 500 all became the same race overall. Parade around until it's time to pit, group up with your manufacturer, talk about how few toyotas are in the field, talk if the fords are going to beat the chevys, (almost always do), have a big wreck, then multiple restarts with more big wrecks. It was all the same. If NASCAR wants to fix speedweeks they need to bring the clash back to Daytona, no half time, at most 1 overtime restart, and get rid of stages in the 500. With those fixes it would clean up the racing and prevent drivers from being forced to be so aggressive.

Dirt Car Nationals has races at nearby at Volusia almost every day for the 2 weeks leading up to Daytona Speedweek. Quite a few NASCAR drivers will be racing modifieds, late models, and/or sprint cars at Volusia and you can walk right through the pits anytime to see or meet them up close - NASCAR always has the Daytona 500 pace car at Volusia with some fan engagement activities. I always stay next to Daytona International Raceway; the hotel rates haven’t yet skyrocketed but there is a lot of activity prepping Daytona as the NASCAR hauler parade is the day after Volusia wraps up. So it is still possible to hit a 2 to 3 weeks of racing, it’s just not all at Daytona International Raceway.

If it were possible, I would capitalize on the Super Bowl seeing as FOX is a broadcaster for it as well Id try to line up speedweek into the week leading up to the Super Bowl and have the “clash” the Saturday prior to the Super Bowl. I would also have the “clash” race at a venue in proximity to where the Super Bowl will be played to capitalize on the numbers that will be there as well and to Co-Marketing between the race and the Super Bowl I would follow that up with speed weeks starting the Wednesday following the Super Bowl as a build up for the Daytona 500 and market that entire week in a Super Bowl Ad seeing as fox can afford the advertising being a broadcaster of the game itself Im also probably far from hitting a realistic idea but that would be my approach change to the whole dynamic. I understand that it would not always be possible to have the “clash” race at a venue within proximity of where the Super Bowl will be played. However if it was, you have ample time to lock that deal in because the Super Bowl venue is known at least a year in advance of the game itself, if not longer

I know this is unique track and set of circumstances but Joey Lagono won the 1st Clash and went on to win the championship(after a not so good season before). Hear me out: We cancel the Clash and have the All-Star race at Homestead. Have the Duels take place before then and have the winners from last year, former Daytona 500 pole sitters and the winners of the Duels make it in. And as an incentive, if you win the Duel, the All-Star Race and the Daytona 500 (The Daytona Triple Crown), NASCAR rewards that team an extra $3 Million dollars. Thoughts?

I think that speedweeks leading up to the biggest race of the season should be the biggest couple weeks of the season. Maybe put a pre season thunder the week before the superbowl then everyday after the superbowl do pit crew challenges, clash, duels, truck, xfinity, and arca stay the same along with the Daytona 500. I think maybe early superbowl sunday do some nascar stuff that morning or the night before with racing. I think in general the superspeedway racing would need a full rework to bring it all back how it used to be. But as far as cost cuts maybe schedule the season where its more travel efficient. (I know there are contract deals for what races go where but this is just my opinion). Also bringing in other series as a tie in with NASCAR. Maybe a legends race if funding allows. Just something to bring current fans and old school fans. Then for new fans bring in another couple concerts. Maybe for example Pitbull Daytona 500 Sunday, Insert country singer on Saturday, have a hiphop artist Friday and do a few different genres throughout the week.

Someone in another comment somewhere pointed out that the NHL will go play at random local rinks to give back before the season and I’d love that for nascar. We have 6 superspeedway races now. The sponsors could be more involved. I don't how a race works actually at the race sorta. Do they setup booths or have activities and contests lkke a gun show or trade show ? If you're at a race you either like racing or want to find if you do after a live show. Have jet ski races on lake Lloyd. You have to have an inner child to like Motorsports and rightfully so. Are they still best sport when it comes to fan engagement? It shouldn't be that hard to figure out, we come for what's on the track. If its exciting and fun, we come back. Like just listen to fans, all sports are vulnerable at some point. Indy cars more popular than what they are. That's what happens when you think you know more than the fans. Weez jus donut no anything. We're not saying we know more than the teams. But empty stands can't pay so it is what it is.

I agree with you about having practice sessions if only a few hours before qualifying. However, I think the bigger question is, what is going to happen with the NASCAR coverage once the UFL starts. It is going to be on Fox and NBC. NBC's coverage is later in the year for NASCAR, so it shouldn't be an issue for them. Fox has a lot to work out. If the UFL works, NASCAR fans will lose out. What are your thoughts? Hope to hear it on the NWP.

Hey, how are you? Great video as always. If I had it my way, I would somewhat go back to the original speed weeks, but change it up a little bit. Maybe have clash/Daytona 500 practice the weekend before the 500 however, all the other series will practice and qualify Monday through Tuesday such as Arca trucks and Xfinity. On Wednesday, we have cup qualifying, then the return of iRock that’s what I would do Thursday I would change it up as well. The duels will be back to during the daytime like they used to be and they’ll be cut back from 150 to 125 miles like they used to be you there’s less laying back and a sense of urgency I would change it as well. Arca would be during the day and then as traditional truck at night like usual Saturday Xfinity during the day and then the big change the clash/Budweiser shoot out Saturday night like I used to be instead of five laps make it 50. As a preview for the Daytona 500 for the next day, then the Daytona 500 green flag at noon.
