I just got a Brother DB2 B714-3 and the problem I have just worked out, from watching this video, I had put my needle in backwards . Thanks for the video showing the bobbin case missing the needle. Mine was hitting at every turn and I was sure it must have been bent having put it in and out many times. Best to look for the simple things first. Cheers from Australia.

Great video Steve! One other thing that can cause shredding is if the needle is not in straight. So glad to see you are back at the shop!! Hope Jose is doing well too!!

Informative video Steve, the part you were sanding on ( rotary hook)with emery cloth is called the thread guide deflector plate and it’s purpose is to guide the top needle thread around the bobbin case thread supply and also acts as a “cast off” ( like the take up lever) pulling off just the right amount of thread from the bobbin through the bobbin case tension plate for the next stitch. We always recommend that the 4 screws holding the deflector plate be removed and polish plate with a rubber abrasive polishing wheel DR425 ( Dremel) then hand polished with 3M Crocus Cloth and then Reinstall deflector plate. This way there is No Way to get grit from sanding in the rotary hook raceway which would cause damage and premature wear in raceway!

I've been having this problem. It's intermittent, and it's been driving me nuts. The shredding bunches up above the eye of the needle. My problems started after I installed the aftermarket needleplate that has markings, and cranked my stitch length to 9. (Juki needs to provide marked needleplates--there's a market.) There is something called sanding cord. Amazon sells it. My hubby might have other suggestions; he's in the steel industry.

This is happening with my DNU 1181n and I'm scared to start dismantling the hook, etc. Did you have any luck? Mine seems to be the worst as I'm working on layers with a welt cord. Perhaps its pushing the needle and the hook is rubbing? UGH!

So I checked and the hook on my machine does nudge the needle right where the thread is and I get a gathering up above. How do I move the bobbin casing back so it doesn’t hit the needle or do I move the needle casing

It seems to me that the bar that holds the little hook on my machine doesn’t engage with that hook enough. Can the bar be bent (damaged) ?

Great video found some burs on the plate and sanded/polished to a mirror finish. Anyone know if the Juki 241H has the flat spot on the hook shaft like the 1541s?

I don't think it does. The 241H did not have a safety clutch from my recollection, so no flat spot.

Great information. I have had my machine for less than a year and last night the bobbin got jammed. Today it took a few hours but I finally got it out and luckily I had a spare bobbin case. The thread was shedding slightly prior to that so I don't know if that was the problem but any help in preventing this from happening again would be appreciated. I have a juki du1181n. Thanks

Things I try when this is happening, start sewing and watch your thread coming off of the spool… make sure no snags on path down Change your Bobbin thread it might have a burr or be close to the end Rethread the whole machine Change your needle Change your fabric and thread for a test Try sewing a test piece of paper or fabric just to see if it’s working on some thing else

Okay so I have an 1181n and my needle is hitting the needle hook! I just got this machine 3 days ago 😭 so this is definitely a timing issue. Can they come from the manufacturer this way?
