why is this tiny set such a big deal?

Ойын-сауық

Since the beginning of this year, the realm of space-themed legos has been changing... for the better! New sets give hope to dedicated fans that a beloved theme might be returning. I believe that the small set featured in today's video (60428-1 - Space Construction Mech) is an indicator of good things to come. In the video I discus the history and downfall of the original LEGO Space themes and why this set could signal a return for the classic "system within a system".

I don't see it, at least not in the form of full themes. What seems to be going on here is that LEGO is experimenting with "interest" branding, slapping a "space" theme emblem on any space-related set that isn't from a licensed theme or an Ideas or Icon set. Problem is, Castle and Pirate sets currently don't exist outside of Icons and licensed themes, and they probably won't for some time. Castle _might_ see this at some point, simply because Castle-like sets pop up from time to time in various "big bang" themes, but I highly doubt the same will happen with Pirates. Sorry for being a Negative Nancy about this. I've just been around long enough and been burned enough times by LEGO that I find it hard to be optimistic.

@@VestedUTuber You are right, ofcourse. Lego has been slacking off, completely ignoring their own important themes for many, many years. However, as a more positive person, I can take solace in that at least we get good sets, that gives some good amount of pieces on pick a brick, making them available at a reasonable pricepoint for quite some time even if they went off it. You can still design and create your own extremely well made castle or pirate sets, as can you do so for space. Most of the more specialized pieces are even quite affordable, basically anything except minifigures, animals or accessories is quite cheap. Then, with that in mind, any set that does deliver on the theme is a bonus, especially if it's an affordable set.

They need to do a better job on the designs, I don't like this at all. I'd hate for them to have this as a failed experiment simply because they had the right idea, but the wrong excecution of that idea. The last Castle line they released also sold badly, but not because people didn't want it, but because the line was really bad. If they had just followed up on the insanely popular (and well designed) Kingdoms line they would still have a castle theme today.

Imagine what someone could do with every part imaginable, even making specific unique parts and colors, including prints? There are no excuses here. Some may like the sets, but I've heard a lot of people that like classic space say they have no intention of buying any of this, as it doesn't have that high science fiction vibe, nor does it have the color scheme or themes associated with that. Great video! I’m split on this paradigm shift. It’s crazy how there’s roughly 40 Lego themes around and there can’t be just one theme for everyone to go to if they want a space theme. Mars Mission and Galaxy Squad were great! We will probably never see themes like those again. On the other hand, having Space and Castle as genres rather than themes is an incredibly smart move. I love how it promotes cross play in different themes and encourages people to explore. It’s what Lego, as a toy, is all about. I loved Lego Space. When I was in my (late) 20s (and avidly collecting all the lego star wars), I bought ALL the classic space sets, from the 1978 early stuff to Insectoids (2nd hand lego was pretty affordable back then). And then I bought all the new space police sets (although they weren’t as cool as the old stuff). Glad to see space make a bit of a return now that star was is dead. Note: the “factions” were not introduced to make good guys and bad guys. They were just colour scheme themes. M-tron had a magnet theme, ice planet an ice theme etc. It was only after Space Police that some themes got a “bad guy” theme, like Spyrious. Lego stayed away from crime and bad guys before the 2000s. Look at the City police sets; bad guys with every police set were only introduced after 2000. At 4:26 you show a colour wheel. But it’s a weird red-blue-yellow pastel one. Not an accurate RGB wheel. Maybe brush up on colour theory, and use a red-yellow-green-cyan-blue-magenta wheel next video.

Vote with your wallet. Maybe they will keep the space stuff coming if it sells well! If not, we should stock up while we can. I think the “Friends” subtheme is really good actually, it most reminds me of older space sets because of it’s vibrant color scheme. The old themes had a lot of wacky and very bright color palettes. No space theme has used the relatively new trans-purple color until now. The City Space sets are all great and well designed and such, but I wish the color palette was cooler. It's possible that Lego is finally seeing diminishing returns from (some) licensed IPs. The star wars sets that sell the most just get remade over and over and there wasn't really much to draw on from the sequel trilogy, since a lot of its locales and ship/vehicle designs were either identical or highly derivative of the OT. I'm sure there's a lot of financial overhead involved in using so many licenses, and you also run the risk of making sets that only appeal to specific audiences, such as mutually exclusive Fandoms or adults (flowers, a grand piano, a Seinfeld set, I don't think kids want these). So those sets surely make money from adults, but I think kids just want their favorite stuff (dinosaurs, houses, cars, aliens, pirates etc) and sets that encourage play and imagination. Lego has done great at expanding their customer base, sets are aimed at adults who want to decorate their homes, but kids surely make up the bulk of purchases and always will. Something I've been thinking about since I saw their new Dreams line of sets, and realized that hardly anything in the Lego store these days is agnostic to existing brands, which is sad to me.

Alas, LEGO is "risk-averse" these days, so they would rather tie this idea to an already established theme with a proven sales track record, than take a chance on a new theme...even though it's based on a previously-existing popular concept. They look at the sales of Alien Conquest and Galaxy Squad and say "Space doesn't sell", so they don't want to risk another low-selling theme and be stuck with tons of excess stock. Of course, they ignore the fact that LEGO itself was responsible for the death of the Space theme by choosing to license Star Wars. LEGO Star Wars sets, IMO, were the start of the death of children's imagination. Now, every character has to have a name/rank/association, when before everyone was nameless, as that was left to the child's imagination. All sets were either "good guys", or "bad guys", whereas before, they could be whatever you wanted, regardless of the suggested lore. Now, every theme has to also have a show, or movie to tie into it, or it doesn't sell. Kids seem incapable of just using their imagination, without it being spoon fed to them, so LEGO refuses to take a risk. Just watch..."Ninjago in Space"...will probably become a 'thing', once City 'Space' dies off.

On an aside: Alien Conquest and Galaxy Squad were two of my favourite Space themes, along with Classic Space, M-Tron, Blacktron 1, and Space Police 3. Additionally, other favourite themes of mine are Monster Fighters, and Pharaoh's Quest. To me, LEGO original IPs are generally far superior to LEGO licensed IPs. More creative, and you get more bang for your buck, due to no "Disney tax" (licensing fee markups). Don't get me wrong, I still 'like' Star Wars, Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo, etc., but I think that LEGO's original IPs outstrip them in every single way.

I hope for a time where lego system brings back castle, island, pirates, space, bionicle and adventure. All unique themes that targetted different genres and fans. All can live together and inspire imagination, the best part? They all work on the lego system builds, meaning they could be combined for more imagination. Yes you heard right. There are bionicle system sets excluding the recent tahu and takua where the toa mahri, inka and the piraka had castles and trains. Bring back original lego themes!

I really like the way the space theme logo is smacked on different other theme's, I don't necessarily need space to be just only its own thing, I like getting space stuff in different variations ranging from friends to creator to whatever else is oit there, I'll be honest the only star wars thing I have is a Lego Sketch BB8, didnt really feel tempted by anything else yet. I hope they'll do the same with other generic themes too in the future

I genuinely think Space deserves it's own TV show. It could be as good as Lego Ninjago but Lego just don't seem to have much hope (it bugs me that I can't think of the right word rn) in it. It would be great to see the themes come back, maybe even having an overarching story that connects it to the space theme of old.

I have 2 points: - The difference between Lego Space and Lego Starwars is that Lego Space is fun and has a lot of opportunities for Lego to design all kinds of creative stuff and that Lego Starwars is boring and has very strict design limitations. It makes sense for Lego to focus on the non-licenced stuff as it has a ton of advantages. - This set and this series of Lego space isn't something I'd ever collect, as the designs and color schemes aren't that interesting to me, but having smaller sets included with it is a great sign. Now if only they could start doing the same for Castle sets, I'd be genuinely excited. Maybe they break away from this rather simple and mediocre design and color scheme for more exciting space, I would certainly applaud that too.

While I do love this whole idea, I think the idea for these sets and the Minifig line is more of a celebration of the space genre as a whole, but depending on customer (mainly collectors) views it could end up expanding. And maybe we’ll see more classic themes and subthemes return.

What I love about these new Space sets is that they aren't actually their own "theme". It's more of a crossover theme. You'll notice that there isn't just one "Space" theme, each theme now has a Space sub-theme. Friends, City, Technic, Creator and even Art all have a Space faction now. Instead of it being its own, distinct theme, it's sort of integrated into all of the existing Lego themes. I don't think Lego has done something like this before and it makes it even more interesting because we can see this theme come through many different styles and design methods. It expands the creativity and gives a lot of breathing room for new and unique avenues in the future.

Maybe I can finally get back into the hobby if lego FINALLY fucking starts making non licensed themes again. I’m so sick of Star Wars and Harry Potter. Ninjago might be the worst of them all though because it has destroyed potential for other themes. “Why make a castle theme if we can just have the ninjas go to a castle! Why have an underwater theme if we can just have the ninjas go underwater?” Etc. I’m a castle guy but I don’t wanna spend $400 on the current caste sets. I would also LOVE if they made another mech series like exo force but unfortunately ninjago stole that idea away as well.
