Most of time when I don't like the face of a main character I can just put a mask on, but I don't think I'll be able to mask up every single NPC in the game

Most wouldn't. Fable 1 you could customize your character in terms of clothes, tattoos, and choices effecting your appearance (but you were only a man). Fable 2 has the most customization where you could be a man or a woman, change hair and hair color (with dyes you could purchase/find) change the clothing and color of your clothes (with same dyes) change the look of your dog (with dlc) and even change your sex by the end of the game via a one time potion. Your decisions and game actions further change your character as well as your upgrades. (Strength makes you buff, skill makes you taller, will makes your have arcane marks on your body). Fable 3 had almost the same amount of customization, minus the one time potion where you can change your sex if you want, but did have tons of customization including changing the look of your sword based on the enemies you killed. This Fable doesn't seem to have the same amount of customization yet. At this rate, I would be surprised if they did. I don't think I want to play 100 hours looking like that thing so I'll wait until it comes out to see what happens. Until then I got Stellar Blade and Palworld.

I honestly thought Fable was dead, this was definitely a surprise. Looks really nice, but hard to tell if it will have the same charm in the setting and writing. As great as the MGS3 remake looks, that whole slew of Xbox game trailers was mostly pre-rendered or noticeably on-rails footage, playing it safe and showing little actual info, and people have gotten more cynical with the state of the industry in recent years. Plenty of games coming out in the mean time, I'll reserve judgement for when we get to see more or when it's actually out.

You couldn't create your own character in any of the Fable games. Even less so in Fable 1, which didn't even include the option of playing as a female character.

Actually you could in Fable 2 and 3. You choose your gender male/female and then you can change your clothes, the color of them, your hair, tattoos and then even change your sex in the end game quests if you want. You are not telling the whole truth there buddy. @@itsbreadbin

Well in terms of hate, let's start with the basics. From shallow to in depth. Shallow 1. It's a Microsoft game. Some people don't like XBOX. 2. An ugly protagonist. Sex sells as does appeal. This character doesn't make the cut physically. Personality wise she seems not that interesting yet. We don't know much about her. Like when you date, the first thing you're gonna look at is the appearance. Sounds shallow but that's how it is. In the entertainment industry, the first thing you got to understand is that we use our eyes first before we invest in most of our entertainment, so if it looks unsightly, you can most likely guarantee there will be lowered interest or investment from the get go. 3. Trailer is kinda cringe. It seems to try hard to be funny instead of being funny. (The comedy seems wack.) In depth 1. For the last few installations, Microsoft games have been struggling a tad with some of their star IPs. From Gears of War to Halo, their last few installations seem to be underwhelming or not that interesting for players. As a result to see another main IP being so heavily advertised makes players think "Why buy this game when the last few didn't seem all that good." 2. The game is gonna be potentially 100 hours considering the seemingly wide expanse of the game. However, we were shown absolutely no real gameplay. We are shown only trailers and maybe some dialogue, but not enough to actually hold anyone's interest since well...no gameplay was shown. So what is there to hold on to. 3. Now going back to point #2, the game has been unfortunately tainted by a political undertone as a result of the main character. Microsoft explicitly sent out in an article that it is going to avoid designing "cute female" characters. In short it's another way of saying, that in order to fight against perceived sexism, they are intentionally going to only make ugly or unattractive characters as a form of political statement. It doesn't help that Microsoft is heavily in deep with Sweet Baby inc, which is known for being a downturn in terms of game storytelling, ranging from Last of Us 2 to Suicide Squad kill the justice League. Specifically they seem to hold misandrist, left leaning viewpoints that overshadow the story in favor of what appears to be lecturing. Wherever you stand politically shouldn't effect a story or art of a video game. Plus no one likes being told what to do in their entertainment. Rule number 1 of entertainment: show, don't tell. More and more gamers are noticing companies blatantly trying to act like activists in areas where it doesn't fit, where their own personal biases overshadow the overall story, characterizations and yes even character appearances. The "intentionally ugly character" is usually a sign that the rest of the game may have been overshadowed by needless "messaging" or DEI enforced regulations as opposed to just making a good game about this female protagonist. Remember, it's Fable, a video game about adventuring, a series that never pulled any punches in its subject matter. Now it already looks like they are before the game is released. It's not necessarily the character in itself, it's everything else that comes along with it. Similar attitudes and patterns in entertainment are noticed in things such as Netflix Witcher, the newer Star Wars installations, Velma (cartoon), Rings of Power, the recent lore issues with Warhammer, and the forced censorship of rated M games such as Stellar Blade and the controversy of Black Myth Wukong, where ideologues are plaguing IPs both new and old and getting in the way of a story simply because those who happen to find it are desperate to force it, to the detriment of profits and consumer trust. Especially in this case, a pre established IP that already has a trilogy of games with established rules, lore and aesthetics.

Excellent assessment and analysis on the current issues running rampant in the western gaming industry

  • @user-beepbopbeep

@@Dee-b5p Thank you. A lot of people, gamers and developers both, seem to not know or care about the current environment of gaming as a whole. Then when games fail, or are unsatisfying, they scratch their heads and wonder why. There are many other factors of course that influence the success of games and the things I pointed out are the most obvious (at least for now). Heck it's the same with a lot of western media that practices these similar attitudes or trends that seem to bring down the quality of entertainment. I don't wish ill will to these games but I gotta point out facts. Western games seem to increasingly have similar patterns and quite frankly show a rampant lacking of creativity as a result, driving more gamers away as a result.

It's a Microsoft game, so its understandable that people are expecting it to be terrible, thats what Microsoft does, and refusing to show any gameplay or go into any depth at all is conformation of this.

It's fable, it's going to be extremely basic like the original games were. Fable was always the most basic RPG and this'll be a prettier version of that.

Well, Peter Molyneux himself said that Fable 2 was aimed at a more casual audience. He wanted to make an RPG that was accessible and playable for anyone, but there was also more to it for players who did want more from the experience too. I felt this balance was sorely lacking with Fable 3, and we barely know anything about the new Fable to even make that call yet.

For me, it's simple: if you're asking me to plunk down 60-70 bucks on a video game I'm hopefully going to spend 30-40 hours playing, I want the character I'm playing as to look good and feel exciting to play. Making 'realistic' characters typically is code for, "your male gaze is a problem I need forcibly fix, and I can't fix you, I'll fix what you're looking at." Note: men don't go out of their way to fix 'the female gaze' in Romance novels, which sell millions of volumes each year, despite women initiating 70% of all divorces, usually citing how their current man doesn't fulfill their desires anymore. If anything, we should be making design choices in games that appeal to fantasies but also praise morality, honesty, and faithfulness.

Actually the "western facial design" is already confirmed by Microsoft explicitly stating that they are tied with Sweet Baby Inc and are intentionally avoiding designing "cute women" in video games. So in a way "western facial design" is very much real, which is the intentional uglying of characters. Since Microsoft itwelf confirmed it, it's clear that pretty women are viewed as problematic, making the main character of the new Fable motivated by seemingly political or enforced biases like gamers originally claimed (which people thought was an exaggeration). Besides, most women don't look like whatever the main character is. Some people really need to get out more and talk to real women. Because whatever the main character is is already unappealing (by Microsoft's own standards no less since it's intentional, meaning she's intentionally ugly). This means less investment from players (most of which are men too), so that means less players will buy first day. Hence why people aren't looking forward to the game as opposed to Stellar Blade, or games like Tomb Raider or even JRPGs. They appeal and don't make their games influenced by faux modern sentiments that simply don't like their audience and are desperate to change it. Don't believe me? There's articles already confirming Microsoft's stand on designing women. Can't say "western facial design" is fake when the people designing it already confirmed it. Its unfortunate that apparently, pretty women of any kind (physically fit, mentally sound, comfortable to be feminine) are problematic to these weirdos.

The characters are ugly, and not in a fun or charming way. Characters don't have to be hot or even within vague beauty standards as we understand them, but the art direction and character designs are very clearly a product of online sentiments of representation for various groups and general pushback against gender expectations with grooming standards. While I generally am in favor of such themes, this is just blatant corporate pandering for a checklist that's wearing the name 'Fable' because trying to sell the idea on an original IP would make even less money. We've seen this before, it's not Fable and you need to stop waving a flag on behalf of groups that dragged this game's legacy through the mud.
