Levi says sodastream puts carbon monoxide into the water, but it is in fact carbon dioxide. There is a pretty huge difference since carbon monoxide is poisonous.

Hey, I feel you missed a couple (European) points. Here in Germany / Europe, for many people fizzy water is a household staple. We drink it all the time as is or mix it with juices and more. Really a lot of people, go and buy like five to ten crates of water once a month (or one to two crates a week) at their local beverage or supermarket. That means lots of heavy bottles, which is just massively inconvenient and also environmentally unfriendly for all that shipping around of heavy water. A soda stream solves that issue. If you calculate it over it's lifetime it's a bit more expensive than the really cheap supermarket water, but most people don't even care about price - the convenience of not having to lug around all that water, having empty bottles all the time and just generally having sparkling water whenever you like is just amazing. The CO2 bottles can be exchanged at every supermarket, so you just buy two in the beginning and then you always have a full one in reserve. It really replaces sugary sodas for me and a lot of people I know - which is also just so much more healthy but in a very low-effort way. So many people I know just have Sodastream bottles everywhere in the flat/house/office and everyone just has "theirs" which they carry around and drink from. I generally really like your videos, but this one seemed a bit too centric on the Pepsi and canned water jokes. Which are funny, just maybe shouldn't be the main talking point here. I believe strongly from experience that sodastreams can be a great piece of kit for convenience, health and probably also the planet. Would have loved to hear these perspectives in a more nuanced way. That the company is shilling out is nothing new, but I feel the product is still great, and I feel that's the most important. As a follow German I totally agree. I grew up hooked on Apfelschorle (appel juice sparkling). We buy the apple juice from a Lokal producer and add our water from the soda stream. I had no idea that Sirups existing for the soda stream. I don’t think they are popular at all in Germany. When I moved out a soda stream was one of my first things I bought for my student dorm. Another thought… the drinking water in German is very good but in the US I was not able to drink water from the tap because it smelled like chlorine. May be that’s also why it is not so popular to use tab water at all in North America.

@@MissMeliM you're right about the water quality thing. Sodastreams only really make sense if you have good tap (or I guess spring) water. Most of Europe has that, the US not so much .. Also so true about the Apfelschorle! It's pretty much a national drink I feel. My roommate likes sirups with the Sodastream water but I would agree it's not that huge of a thing here in general.

I live in the US and our experiences very similar. I agree that the emphasis on canned water was a bit much in the video, but here in the US those are a big segment of the beverage market now so it makes sense in a US-centric video. I mean, that's the reason why Pepsi bought SodaStream, to grab a segment of the market that had replaced their sugary soda business.

You just repeated everything I was thinking when watching the video. I also wondered why he didn't consider a comparison with the European perspective as he did in previous videos. But I guess you can only put so much into one video. I would even say that soda stream has become a staple of german culture at this point. Everyone I know has one. So it seemed so wired that he was talking about it as this new thing that just reached NA.

If you buy one of these products, doesnt matter the brand name and you use an aftermarket refilling nozzle with a local source of compressed sterile air . . . it actually comes out cheaper. It might not be feasible in the places, but in the Americas market it is a no brainer if you want carbonated beverages. The jump in cost for a professional system or using glass bottles to get really high carbonation is too steep even for a middle class household . . . but soda stream? EASY buy! I actually love the taste of plain carbonated water, but I hate tonics so this really fit the bill. I used to buy the premium syrups normally used in icecream or coffee and those in small spoonfuls added just the right zing with virtually NO guilt. LOVE IT, wished I had it here in Asia.

Here in Europe I grew up with a Soda Stream in the 90s and obviously I bought one for myself after moving out. For me the biggest advantage is not having to carry crates of water from the shops home. The ecologic and economic savings are just an added benefit.

what kind of economic savings? A cheap 1.5L supermarket in-house brand of water is some 0.20€, to fill the co2 you need to spend at very least 5€ or a lot more if you get the official refill, it doesn't make much economical sense at all.

@@give_me_my_nick_back a refill of the CO2 cannister costs 5,99€ at my local shop and lasts for about 60l. One liter of tapwater is about 0.2 cents. I save about 50% compared to bottled water. It takes about 600l (for my household roughly half a year) of soda stream water to break even though.

Another interesting perspective on how SodaStreams can help us be more environmentally friendly is for those of us who lives in areas where we can drink our tap water. Having a SodaStream cuts back the amount of liquid (which is pretty heavy) being transported, since we already have the water available in our houses. While PepsiCo is undoubtedly a problem, their purchase made their sodas available as taste additives for carbonated water, which is really nice for those of us that likes their sodas.

But the "Pepsi" syrup for SodaStream is not "real" Pepsi syrup. It's some unholy amalgamation of Pepsi and Diet Pepsi/Zero Sugar Pepsi with part, though not all, of the sugar replaced with artificial sweeteners. Apparently the reason for this is that if you try to concentrate real Pepsi syrup by the same amount that the SodaStream flavorings are concentrated it gets gummy. Using artificial sweeteners (most of which are MUCH sweeter than sugar, albeit with an accompanying "you are consuming poison, stop that" taste), then that lets them reduce the sugar to the point where they CAN concentrate the syrup to the degree required for one of the little bottles to make 9 liters of soda.

@@ptorq Interesting! I only drink the Pepsi Max taste anyway, so to me that doesn't really matter, but I feel they should probably make that more obvious 🤔

I used to buy bottled sparkling water before buying a sodasteam and now I no longer have to waste plastic bottles every week. The gas canister refill + return is great and makes this essentially waste free!

Here in Argentina we have “soderías”, they are basically little factories near neighborhoods that bottle carbonated water in reusable soda siphons and also deliver them door to door by demand. So, they arrive to your place and deliver you your usual amount of soda siphons (full) and then you give them back your empty ones. We’ve been doing this for generations now. Though it’s pretty common to us, the idea might sound weird to foreigners 😂 feel free to look it up if you like. Love the channel!! 🙌 keep up the good work 💪

I mean, they were first marketed in 1955 and like half the people I knew back in the 90's had one... So from my point of view, you just own a SodaStream.

The plastic bottles from Sodastream ironically also have a best-before date printed on and usually have to be replaced after 3 to 4 years. At least here in Germany. This is due to the pressure exerted on the bottles when the water is “bubbled”. According to Sodastream, the bottles should not exceed their useful life. There is no such problem with the glass bottles. By the way, here in Germany, water with spring carbonation from areas of the Volcanic Eifel or other volcanic areas is absolutely natural. There are actually fountains along hiking trails here where you can fill your own bottles and drink bubbly water directly.

Then again when I used to drink it, I wasn't too far from where it's made, the local tap water was hideous, as was the town's local mineral water, and Gerolsteiner was just the easiest one to get that was nice enough. I used my bottle well past the expiry date and even after I accidentally warped it a bit from having it too close to a heat source. Nothing bad happened, but maybe I was just lucky. I do NOT recommend just in case. Also just a fyi that the glass bottles are not compatible with the machines that come with the plastic bottles. If I ever need to replace my SodaStream entirely I will be looking for one that uses a glass bottle. ...and now that I know that Pepsi owns SodaStream I will be switching brands as well.

This „trend“ is kind of hilarious to me honestly ^^ my parents own a soda stream since at least 20 years (we live in Germany) and use it every day for all the water we drink 👍🏻

I live in the US and have had my Sodastream for 17 or 18 years. We use it all the time and even my grandson knows how to work it. I think one reason it never caught on in the US until recently was because it was marketed as a replacement for soda. That wasn't very successful because the flavor syrups that were available were not very good. In a country where people are very brand loyal, it was an uphill battle to get people to drink something that didn't taste "right". And the soda companies were definitely not going to help out by making their syrups available because that would just cut into their sales. The big push towards sparkling water made a huge difference here.

My family has a SodaStream as in the UK they did a thing with the relaunch where you could trade in an old machine for a new one (we dug my gran’s out of the back of her cupboard). We use it all the time, but it didn’t really replace us buying fizzy water, more just gave us the option to have fizzy water whenever we wanted it. And yes we call it fizzy water.

In France, you don't have to send your empty canister back. You can just go to your basic supermarket and if they sell full canister they will take your empty one and deduce the price of the canister from your purchase. Also wanted to point out an advantage of those machines is that you can control how bubbly you want your water to be. Like I'd put less for drinking it straight out of the bottle than for making mojitos for example

Man, you are gonna get comments about the instant pot. Not a fad. As a disabled person, it changed my cooking game 100% and it also helped us cut down on eating out. Plus, one pot clean up means less dishes and water. But this video isn’t about the IP. We recently bought a manual (no electricity required) soda stream starter kit (with a 50% off coupon) for $50 because we found out a member of our household has a high intolerance to HFCS. This was a much cheaper option that buying store bought “fancy” sodas made with sugar like Jones. So the fact that it saves money and cuts down on single use plastic or aluminum is a big plus, the “health benefits” are the main reason we finally took the plunge and bought ours; so no, I don’t care that it was bought out by Pepsi. It seems like everything I look at ends up being owned by big corps like P&G or Pepsi or Amazon; and sadly while buying “local” or from small businesses is nice and ideal, it’s not accessible for a lot of us and the goal of most businesses is to one day no longer be small, right?

@@grantdelacy325 I got an IP as a gift. I used it ONCE to make beef stew. It obliterated everything in the pot turning the whole thing into beef paste. It now sits in a box in my basement. The humble slow cooker is just the better way to make certain foods that are meant to be cooked slow and low like pulled pork and stews.

I think the initial values of the company--eliminating plastic bottles and cans--still hold true. It's unfortunate that the money is going to PepsiCo, but PepsiCo's practices would remain the same with or without the Soda stream. The intensions of the product and the benefits still remain, regardless of the owner.

Pepsi isn’t dumb, they see the future. This might be become super common in the future and they can go out of business if they don’t adopt it fast. Various companies fail due to not being about to see the future

My uncle had a sodastream when I was a kid (33) and I remember wanting one so bad. He used to have the flavors mailed to him and I remember that being a reason my parents didn’t want to do it. I also remember the machine seeming really expensive, but that might have just been my child minds perspective. Happy to see it make a mainstream entry!

I'm a home brewer, and strongly agree with the point of using a big CO2 cartridge. I keep one of my kegerator taps dedicated for sparkling water. If anyone is looking for an alternate SodaStream option, you could get by with a corny keg, a regulator, CO2 tank, and a picnic tap. The total cost wouldn't be much more than a SodaStream, but you can get the refillable CO2 tank and corny keg used at most homebrew shops. Be careful though, you might accidentally acquire a fermenter...

This video is absolutely perfect timing. I just did the rough math with my coworkers who drink up to 4 cans of seltzer a day. The cost per 12oz of a can is about 42 cents where as 12oz of a soda stream using bubly flavoring will run you 31 cents. At that rate they would save about $120 a year. I had not thought about using a large CO2 with an adaptor. Levi and the team, please look into "recyclable plastic bags" I just talked about them briefly in my last video and I think it's important that more people know about them and how ridiculous they are

Hey! In Germany, you can basically bring your empty Co2 canister to any supermarket and they'll exchange it for about 6€. With water, if sparkling or still, being a standard drink in Europe (which it should be everywhere bc ✨️sugarwater✨️), this saves lots of money and plastic bottles. Even if you buy glass bottled sparkling water, that is so inconvenient to carry and still more expensive. You drink water? You have good quality tap water? Get a soda stream.

Or install a water filtration system at home for about $3-500. Mine has reverse osmosis and alkaline on top of the regular filtration. I save a lot more money and less plastic

I think you missed one of the most important things for the question if a soda stream is the right thing for you: What quality is your flat water...Soda stream is so big in Germany, because we have a great water infrastracture, and you do not find water here that taste like cholrine...If you can not drink the water from your faucet, or it tastes aweful, a Sodastream is just usefull in combination with a filter...this is where the money starts to add up ;) Still the Sodastream was one of the best things I have bought, just drinking water from it right now ;)

My soda stream canister lasted ~6 months and I really carbonate my water. I was drinking 1-2 seltzers per day so definitely a money saver. I'd also like to think it's better for the environment especially since they refill the canisters.

I love the notes from the editors, especially their thoughts on Mtn Dew 😂

it's really cool how it lets you customize sodas to taste. the boba store i used to work at used sodastream for its carbonated drinks. one of my favourite recipes was 2oz of blueberry/strawberry jam + 2.5 oz of plum vinegar + extra sweetener

@@nomanejane5766 u just add carbonated green tea and condiments into a cup. then stir until everything dissolves. we used one of those cocktail measuring cups to measure the condiments. it wasn't one of those solid jams, moreso a thick syrup with tiny chunks of berry.

Especially in Germany and other European countries people tend to drink more sparkling water than tap / table water. It saves SO MUCH plasic from the bottles and also so much heavy carrying from the grocery store!

We got our soda stream to cut out our soda consumption. My wife is diabetic, and was addicted to diet soda. With how bad aspartame is for you, that is also no good. The soda stream has worked wonderfully for us. We make our own flavors, so we can avoid the junk, and it has saved us money. So for us, it works. We got the one with the glass bottles, so we avoid plastics as well.

Bulgaria has so much mineralized mountain spring water, they have taps everywhere for people to just fill up with free water. Some of these natural sources are naturally carbonated too. (You can buy it prebottled in stores, and it’s crazy cheap, 2 liters cost like a dollar.) Have the cheap Sodastream machine for a while, that CO2 canister seems to last a LONG time as I haven’t had to replace it yet, but we did need to replace the bottle (it has an expiration date!)

We've always cared for them very gently and they still seem to be a good shape but I probably wouldn't recommend using them quite that long.

I went to Hot Springs Arkansas in the US and they have free taps around the city. So cool.

I think the Pepsi buyout can be a good thing, because soda streams were originally marketed to replace soda, not just seltzer, and they have syrups that can be added to the bottles to make the soda. This way, people who like their Pepsi can have a name brand and eco friendly option for their favorite beverage.

The syrup doesn't interact with the machine anyhow, it's not part of the system. You simply fizz up your water and then measure a portion of syrup and pour it in the bottle. So any soft drink company can just manufacture their own syrup, it'll just be in a different shape container from the official Soda Stream ones, and they need it to come with a measuring cup which is graded by how much you add per litre or half a litre of water.

I think it's a cool idea because now people are motivated, by the BIG PEPSI name, to drink sugarless drinks. Slowly but surely. If I had a sodestream, I wouldn't even buy any of the syrups.. I'd just use fruits, herbs, spices. If I want an occasional root beer, ill just buy one.

I watched a KZread video a whole ago with the adapter you’re talking about!! There’s also a huge section of people who will actually DIY it: by buying dry ice, screwing off the cap and gently putting the dry ice 🧊 in the original soda stream co2 container!!

I bought a sodastream, not for sparkling water, but for soda. I’ve estimated that I can save up to $50 a year including the syrups and carbon dioxide canisters while reducing waste from my house and reducing emissions from shipping all of that water since I have drinkable tap water.

Sodastream was around in the UK in the 70’s/80’s. How can you say it was forgotten until a few years ago?

My husband used to buy 6 liters of flavored sparkling water a week, 4 years ago we got him a soda stream and he uses it exclusively for his sparking water addiction. It’s definitely saved us money and saved a couple of bottles.

Yes them selling out to PepsiCO does devalue what they claimed their goals & priorities were. If I want to make my own spicy water I’ll buy a different brand for this reason alone - even if it’s more expensive. The hypocrisy rubs the wrong way. Imagine if some vegetarian/vegan brand of food that is owned by self-proclaimed “activists” sold their business to Cargill or Tyson.

Omg, I've bought a SodaStream a few weeks ago, after getting obsessed with ginger ale soda, but finding it to sweet for my palate and kind of expensive...I love it, the canister I have is still going strong and I make sparkling water with a dash of lemon to refresh almost everyday since ! I even made a ginger syrup myself to replicate the drink I liked :3

Try Monin brand syrups. You only add as much as you like, and they are very economical.

One other big factor is the quality of your tap water. Where I live it is not a problem, but sadly there are many areas where drinking straight from the tap isn't the healthiest option...

Depending on the time of year our tap water here can sometimes have an unpleasant flavor. So we bought a Brita pitcher and the filtered water tastes fine all year round. It was an easy problem to solve.

Living in europe we used to regularly buy unflavoured sparkling water in plastic bottle. I'd say a third of our meals we would drink it. But now that we have a sodastream machine, we litterally drink it for every meal. But I do still think it saved us money in the long run

My family used to go through a slab of 24 cans of Pepsi in about 2 weeks, since switching to sodastream I've definitely saved money but it also feels much better throwing away 1 plastic bottle of concentrate instead of 24 cans (1 bottle = 8-9 litres), and the syrup is Pepsi syrup so it tastes exactly the same. And the refill program for the gas canisters is circular too so very little waste is produced.

Good idea with the big canister! I like my SS because it reduces the need to lug home a bunch of cans (especially since I’m usually walking or biking). Same goes for laundry strips. So much lighter!

Sodastream isn't just a recent craze in countries outside the US. My step-Grandad had an old sodastream that still used the pretty glass twisty pattern bottles and I have fond memories of him letting us each have ginger ale, when we visited our grandparents. Parents also have a sodastream to give their kids plain bubbly water to get them to drink more water.

Not is it in the US. Seems like things rise and fall in the public consciousness in a cycle.

I bought the sodastream with the glass bottles, still perfect 4 years later and haven’t bought a fizzy drink since. Well worth it!

I have been using Soda Stream for well over a decade. The flavor choices are quite good and I can contro; the anount of bubbles are in each bottle. I made the switch for covenience and quality of flavors and have never looked back since.

We've had a soda stream for our family for quite a few years and use it pretty regularly. It has saved us quite a bit of money over those years. Our only complaint is that the reusable bottles don't hold the carbonation into the solution well enough after a few hours.

If the purchasing of sodastream really makes you feel iffy for purchasing one, consider a Drinkmate! It even has the added bonus of being able to carbonate flavored stuff!

Sodastream does bubble flavored stuff to. They sell syrup for it themselves even i think.

What makes more sense for PepsiCo? Procuring, purifying, carbonating, flavoring and packaging water, or selling you a little bottle of syrup? They're in it for the money but imo that's the way to change these big companies. Show them that less waste is more profitable.

yea, but if the corp buys the whole thing, they can do how they please. Thats the problem. Also, of course they're in it for the money and they know it would less wasteful with single containers. Nobody needs to show them because they know every single thing about it. The reason is simply more profit than otherwise. You drastically overestimate how much their cost of production is. Besides, how do you know they're purifying the water. In the western world, the water provided is often already much cleaner than what you something get in bottles. And wehther they carbonate in the factory or manufacture CO containers isnt really all that different.

@@silvenshadow well, instead of shippig bottles, they now ship the appliance, the sirup and co containers. Certainly, they might less profit, but thats also why they bought in instead of just supplying the sirup. Point is, If they buy the competition or at east the market leader, they can keep profits or determine the price and control it. there is zero ideology behind it or even interest in any ideology. they know exactly what they are doing

I just got one of these for Christmas, I can't wait to start using it. Cherry Bubbly has become a favorite beverage of mine. Helps cut back on the Dr. Pepper consumption.

In Argentina we are old school: we buy our soda siphon from the local supplier or brewer... they do the refill, and you can drink a good soda that does not pollute the environment with plastic bottles. Cheap and good.

We have had our Sodastream machine (the cheapest of the bunch) from over 10 years ago, the outer shell was still made of white plastic at the time. And aside the many bottles of CO2 that were used, we almost never buy a bottle of soda anymore. Our tap water is filtered and we have even been making our own syrups ("Fix the Pumps" by Darcy S. O'Neil is an amazing source btw) for a few years now.

I had a really old glass bottle soda stream growing up and have a new modern one now. I don't use it much for soda water but use it to make tonic, lemonade etc.. main reasons I got one was so I don't have to lugg bottles from the supermarket, reduce packaging and save fridge space. Because the syrups last for ages I can basically have all my favorite drinks on hand and only need to keep one sodastream bottle of water in the fridge.

If sodastream becomes more trendy, do you think it’s possible for Pepsi to brand it like Keurig? They can make machines that are only accept their CO2 and then sell it for like 50 dollars a machine like the K-Cup machines 😂 Or they can make s-cups

From what I saw online they're already doing it.. Not sure where this channel got the info from. For past idk how many years they're using non-standard connections that require adapters to be used with different bottles.

@@IHateHandlesWayTooMuch Their connectors haven't changed, at least not in the last 2 decades. My family's Sodastream is 17 or 18 years old and Sodastream has been on the market for many years longer than that. They would have been foolish to make all those older machines obsolete as would Pepsi now if they tried to make a change to the canisters. I would further argue that, if anything, it's the newer machines that are using non-standard fittings given that SodaStream has been around for many decades and pretty much created the market for home fizzy water machines.

I inherited a sodastream from a friend. Thing is, I live in Paris where we get fizzy water from some public fountains, including one 200m from my house... the machine is understandably gathering dust at the back of a cupboard

I’d love it if there was a place where you could specifically find alternatives to hyped, admittedly good but insanely pricey products that are just as good or even just almost as good but more affordable for the everyday person 👀

Great video! My wife is German and we go through 2-3 of those cannisters a month. I am now researching large form cylinders why didn't I think of this?! Also Soda Stream has glass bottles which can further offset the damnable plastic.

Nice one! Sadly I think it's more like when existing companies bring out a "carbon neutral " or eco product, but keep the rest of their business the same. They aren't changing their values, just capturing a new market segment 🙄

Switched from la croix to SodaStream. Definitely saving money. I calculated the cost per drink based on how many ounces it says of the canisters are good for, and compare that to you the number of cans of lacroix that I drink, generally the sodastream is cheaper by my second canister. And I'm also just glad that I'm not putting so much waste in the landfills

Having a plastic lining is the sane as making huge amounts of plastic for a bottle. Aluminum can still be recycled unlike plastic.

I love my soda stream. As someone who walks to the grocery store, I pretty rarely drank sparkling water before I had it, but I drink so much now. And I get tonic syrup to make gin&tonics (and can make way less sweet than buying normal tonic water). I occasionally consider getting the giant CO2 canister but I generally only have to get a CO2 refill every 8 months, so it's kind of a low priority right now.

Instant pots are awesome and make beans really fast which is cool also try to find a used soda stream. We got ours for like 10-20 dollars second hand and it’s great.

Yes! I make my soups, sauces, rices and beans in them on a weekly basis. It saves time when the alternative is cooking low and slow on the stovetop.

We recently moved to the Netherlands and SodaStream/etc. is available everywhere here. All the home good stores sell them and extra accessories, and the beverage aisles at the grocery stores sell branded soda and juice syrup containers.

Aren’t soda stream carriages better for the planet? (While not certain) I’m pretty sure used cartridges are sterilized, refilled and then sold again much like the milk bottle system. Contrast that with aluminum cans, which as you point out have to be melted down, using massive amounts of energy. Not to mention the high energy cost to make aluminum. Sure there is a transportation cost with the cartridges but you would have that with any of the other options discussed. As long as you are using a soda stream to its fullest extent I would think it’s a better choice then single use.

As a european, this hype has went completely over my head 😅 It seems strange to me that sparkling water✨ is apparently the big new thing. I can’t imagine drinking so much sparkling water that investing in a SodaStream is worth it. Regular water is perfect as it is 💦

Well, it's a personal opinion. As for me, I don't like plain water & I don't like water at room temperature. When I carbonate it & pour it over ice, it tastes better to me. I don't understand it...but that's how it is for me. I drink a lot more water when it's cold & carbonated.

In Germany Sodastream actually sells their own and Pepsi, Lipton Ice Tea and Rockstar Energy syrups in 440ml to make 9 L of beverage

I use my SodaStream for many years now and it's really great. We got really nice tap water so my partner and I drink mostly that but carbonated. I live in Germany and a few years back we used to have a deal where you can hand in your empty CO2 canister and get a full one for 1€ (which back then was roughly $1.20 USD). It has gotten a lot more expensive now but is still considerably cheaper than buying bottled water. Overall it saved us a lot of money and we don't have to carry heavy crates of drinks.

Have a soda stream... I use it every day (husband can refill canisters at work for free!), Don't buy the drops...make your own flavours out of fresh strawberries or mint! Don't you be dissin' my Instant Pot (which I also use every day!) LOL.

I haven't used my SodaStream in almost a year. I was actually planning to go to the brewing store to refill my big tank. I plan to switch to directly connecting my tank to the SodaStream, but before I'd actually refill paintball tanks from it. I don't really recommend this though. It's needlessly expensive and a pain to do. Just connect it directly. I actually use my SodaStream for pretty much everything but water. (Plain sparkling water tastes weird to me) But I also don't necessarily recommend this, because it makes a huge mess which gets things sticky and even moldy. I wish there was a better solution for this on the market.

Bought one 2 years ago. Bought multiple bottles to make it easy to use. Everyone in my house uses the machine at least once a day. The replacement carts are cheap enough and last forever. 100% would recommend

Apparently soda stream is fairly popular with recovering alcoholics. Sparkling water (with or without syrup added) is a good replacement for the fizziness of beer, and having it on demand (more or less) makes it an easier choice to make

The thing that's stopped me from getting something like a Soda Stream is the need to go find the CO2 canisters for replacement. I'm very interested in the possibility of a large canister with an adapter! Now I'm off to go down that rabbit hole so I can achieve ultimate sparkling laziness ✨✨

I've had one for like 10 years now, it's a lot cheaper than buying bottles, and even if it wasn't any cheaper, not having to haul bottles from the store is nice

Years ago, I bought a SodaStream Penguin, one of their more expensive machines using glass bottles. Used it for a while and forgot about it. Sometime later, I was about to try it again, it made the fizzing sound, but no bubbles appeared in the water. I opened it up and found a broken plastic part. Emailed SodaStream to buy a replacement. They refused to sell it for "safety reasons". The option was to ship the machine from Norway to Sweden. As it was out of warranty, I had to pay to ship both ways and service costs. All in all, it would be more expensive than the machine itself. I ended up buying a machine from AGA, and it is still going strong. SodaStream will not get any more of my money.

I'll be honest that while you might think people do not use Instapots these days, I recently bought one and I rarely use any other appliance to make my dinner. It's such a time saver and also makes it easy to do everything in one pot. Godsent from me.

I grew up with a soda stream back in the UK in the 80/90s it always tasted gross but my mum insisted it was cheaper so we were stick with it. I hope they have improved the taste!

I've had a soda stream for years now. I exchange the canisters at Staples but I think you can do it at Walmart too. The price has risen to about $15 and it does 60 liters (quarts) so it comes out to 25 cents per liter. I flavor it with lemon juice or a Stevia based water enhancer. Too bad Pepsi bought Soda Stream.

Highly recommend the Drink mate. Uses the same CO2 cannisters as Sodastream (and can be hacked the same way) but carbonates everything! I use it for the meads and wines I make! Love it!

So interesting and enlightening. I’ve always thought that carbonated beverages were constantly breaking down the aluminum cans. I mean a can of Coca Cola can remove crude oil from fabric. Now, I know it’s worse those cans are plastic lined. I have a daughter that struggles to drink enough fluids. A SodaSream might be a solution. Although, I struggle with those big company buy-outs. Damn you Proctor and Gamble for buying Native and Schmidt’s. This is the first Future Proof video from the AirB&B in Portland. Can’t wait to see more from both channels!

I am a homebrewer, and thus already have 5 lb CO2 canisters for my tap system. If you are in a similar situation (or are willing to shell out $65 or so for a 5 lb canister) and $30 or so for an adapter to hook it up to your SodaStream, the canister will last a long time and costs $20 to refill. Also, if you are not satisfied with the flavorings sold for the SodaStream, you can make your own out of herbs or essential oils, ethanol or propylene glycol, and a dropping funnel in 24 hours, or a couple of weeks without a dropping funnel. Just be sure to do some research as to which herbs are safe in what quantities, and how to find essential oils that are safe as well.

I bought a drinkmate around 2 years ago because I was drinking a ton of bottled seltzer and I wanted something that would produce less waste. I was buying a store brand one that was as cheap as 50 cents per liter when it went on sale, and I bought a bunch of fruit flavor extracts to add to my home seltzer, so I don't know if the machine has technically paid for itself yet (I just haven't done the math) but I did make it cheaper by getting a hose adapter and a couple 7 lb CO2 tanks. It costs $15 to do the sodastream trade ins (the tanks that go on the machine are the same for those 2 brands and drinkmate doesn't have an accessible trade in program) for 1 lb tanks, but I can get CO2 from a homebrew shop for about a third of that price per lb.

So, here in Germany SodaStream got itself in a price war regarding the CO2 canisters. Big discounters like ALDI and drug stores also started selling unbranded CO2 canisters. Doing so, SodaStream lost its monopoly in this market. Yeah, they play the ink cartridge game. CO2 is dead cheap. To stop this, SodaStream started selling a new model that requires canisters with a proprietary cap instead of the traditional screw cap.

We got the glass bottle version a few years ago and I was disappointed to find that the new quick connect CO2 cannisters are not compatible. As we were drinking through at LEAST two cases a week yeah it made a lot of sense for us

In the 1990's Keystone beer had a marketing campaign about how their cans had a lining to protect the taste of the beer. If you ever open a can of soup you can see the plastic lining clear as day.

Here in the UK I can remember Mum had a soda steam back in the 70's, at the time they also made concentrates so you could have a go at replicating you favorite soda flavour. Cola, Orange, Lime, tonic, and ginger beer were the flavours I remember. There may have been others.

I have a soda stream and I honestly don’t use it as much as I’d like to. I’m definitely going to start using it more. After all, it was a Christmas present like 3 years ago

A long ago we wanted a soda stream but the cost was too high for the amount of soda we drank. Similar to a Kurieg, if you drink a lot of coffee that's expensive. We got the Primo Flavor Station. The CO2 containers were refillable for $4. That made it cheap.

I live in Denmark and i feel like the bottle recycling system here is pretty good. Each bottle or can you buy has a code on it that identifies the type of material and how it should be recycled. The price includes something we call "pant", basically you pay a tiny bit of extra money for each bottle so that you return to the store, hand in your empty bottle into a machine that scans it and further recycles it for you, and gives you that money back so you use it further for groceries. So people are extremely incentivized to recycle their bottles and cans, because if you don't you literally lose money. You are even able to share these empty bottles with people in need. Some cities here have attachments to garbage cans called "share your pant", where you can leave your empty bottles for people that have a need for money, so they can put it in recycling for you and get a bit of money.

This system has been going on for years here, i've experienced it ever since i first visited Denmark, which was around 8 years ago. And it is implemented in almost every single grocery store, so everyone recycles bottles, whether they are from the smallest town in Jutland or Copenhagen.

Had a Sodastream as a child in the 90s and have my own now as saves a fortune buying bottled. Also reduces waste as can refresh a bottle if I don’t finish it unlike all the half drank bottles that would end up down the sink. Sparking water is a big thing in Europe and it’s easy to get the bottles refilled at a cheaper rate.

Bug light hard soda literally tastes like soda. Like they're super sweet and you can't taste the alc at all. It's quite scary

Another way to carbonate drinks (without fancy equipment) is just getting some dry ice and dropping it in. Dry ice is solid CO2, and as it sublimates, a lot of the gas remains dissolved. This is how I learned to NOT carbonate milk. Along with tasting terrible, the protein in the milk means that it forms a stable foam that just keeps growing and overflowing from the cup onto your hands and into the sink making you wonder how on earth you are going to clean all this up.

I bought a stylish Swedish solid metal version by a company called Aarke. They're beautiful to look at, sturdy as heck, and likely to last me my whole life. I love it!

Yes. I was getting a case of sparkling water every other week. Consuming about 3 cans per day, I was drowning in cans. So after the initial outlay I recuped the cost of the machine and saved over $30/mo. The cost of the canister if exchanged is $14.99. I make my own syrups and bitters. So for me it's a win.

I laughed about the Soda Stream being the "new" thing! I've had my Soda Stream since 2012! I have one at home and in my RV! Love the Soda Stream!

as the daughter of a german who lived in hungary for a while, i was raised on sodawater. it was the only beverage aside from tea and milk. my dad would bring in bottles and bottles of mineral water every week, even though the tapwater in our country is one of the cleanest in the world. so he switched to sodastream pretty early on, and it made a lot of sense for him. it's one of those ecofriendly switches that just gives you so much satisfaction over how much plastic it saves, as well as money, as well as just being so much more convenient. eastern europeans really love their sodawater, i remember that ordering water in a restaurant would get you sparkling as a default. but i truly understand the attachment, because i feel the same way. sodawater supremacy bb

I used to have a Soda Stream, but I live on a remote island in Alaska, and I didn't trust that I'd be able to get the canisters with regularity here. I bought a different machine, called Sparkel. Instead of using a Carbon dioxide tank/cartridge, it carbonates the water using baking soda and citric acid (in a separate chamber, just the gas goes into your beverage. Oh, and it lets me carbonate anything, not just wate.
