As someone who is a mix of both of those we share more than our name. Both cultures have kilts, both venerated bagpipes, both are known as highlanders, both carried the tribal culture and if you look at pictures of rural Scottish women of 50s you basically couldn't tell which were Albanian and which not.

According to tradition, when the early Aztecs moved into the Valley of Mexico, they saw an eagle perched on a cactus, with a rattlesnake in its beak. So they built Tenochtitlan on the island where the eagle had been. And of course, Tenochtitlan later became Mexico City. The eagle is pictured on the Mexican flag. So at least two countries were founded because of eagles carrying snakes.

Shqipëria as a name is recent (relatively)... dating to around 1400s and only commonly adopted by the 1700s. The name before that and until around the 1800s (except for some pockets of Albanians away from Albania) was Arbëria. Shqipëria itself is most likely from shqiptoj than shqiponjë, with the latter being a folk-etymology. Not that uncommon for people to call themselves "we understand eachother-people"

Shqiptoj derives from "shqip" which is the Albanian language in Albanian. The exact meaning of shqiptoj is "to pronounce". Shqip means "the language of Shqipëria" that derives from "shqiponja", referring to the two-headed eagle in the Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu's flag and to the bird, which is a proud animal and loves the freedom, just as Albanians.

The term Albania comes from the Albanian word "Arberia" which was also the name Albanians referred to themselves prior to the 16th and 17th century until the terms "Shqiptar" and "Shqiperija" replaced them. Old Albanian communities in italy still call themselves "Arberesh", the same for the "Arvanites" in Greece, "Arnauts" in Turkey and "Arbanasi" in Croatia. The term most likely means "Lowlander"

Albania is most likely a latinisation of the Albanian name ARBENIA (Arberia). Arbenia meant lowlands and Malesia means highlands. It is a pity you didn't include this as it is the most likely hypothesis. The name Shqiperia is a more recent ethnonym which comes from the word "shqipoj" to speak clearly, and defined all its people.

Albania's national animal is the golden eagle, which has all-brown feathers, but your depiction of the eagle has a white head, which is miles wrong. The bald eagle is only native to north america and not Europe, plus the golden eagle is found in your country, though it isn't very common.

  • @Liethen

Correct, though there are several other sea eagles that have the bald eagle appearance as well. I don't think any of the ones that look like bald eagles are native to southern Europe though.

I think part of why Patrick used the bald eagle is to visually specify that the bird is an eagle, as the bald eagle is a species that is easily recognizable across cultures. While that is mostly due to the USA, as Liethen has pointed out in their reply there are other eagles with similar colouring.

And even more insulting, the Hungarians, whose language is totally different from any Slavonic language (much more so than German, actually), BORROWED the word and refer to Germany as 'Németország', which is the word for "mute" borrowed from the Slavonic language familiy (német) combined with the Hungarian word "ország" meaning land. But they top it off with calling the Netherlands 'Németalföld', which is the same borrowed word for "mute" combined with the Hungarian "alföld" which means "low-laying plain".

Albania getting invaded for thousands of years from all kind of kingdoms while being one on its own has definitely adapted throughout the years not only people from all around the world but cultures, languages, movies in the latest years from India, China etc. What unites the Albanians mainly is the language which has survived and its so rich and they give so much emphasis to the words they use and the meaning of them, NOT religioussnes or any kind of symbols, a country with different values. Somewhere was written that the meaning of the double headed Eagle is the connection of East and West (one head looks left and the other right), black and red if I remember well had something to do about bloodshed. Albania, being the center of many empires was doomed to always be in war.

The toponym Shqiperia is not related to eagles. It stems from the verb "Shqipoj" in old Albanian which means to "understand" and is a cognate of latin verb Excipio. The verb Shqipoj is still in use in the Albanian diazpora in Ukraine, but no longer in the homeland. The verb Shqipoj gave rise to the ethnonym Shqiptar which means "The one who understands". The ethonym Shqiptar gained traction upon the spread of Islam in Albania and it was used to clarify that though muslim and christian Albanians practiced religions alien to each other they could understand each other. It made sure that the sense of common identity persisted. The new ethnonym Shqiptar gave rise to the new toponym Shqiperia.

As with everything else, blame the british and other colonizing powers for these names becoming cannon. Eire, Alba and Cymru were bastardized into Ireland, Scotland and Wales. They would conquer the territory and strip them of their identity by labeling them as they wished. It goes back way before the modern times to the Romans who started the trend.

Well explained, however the name before shqipëria was Arbëria in albanian, and the albanians were called Arbëresh,Shqipëria name came after 1912 independence. The Arbëresh..basically the Albanians with that name are found in italy, many albanian tribes in the 1400s migrated to italy and kept the name Arbëresh and the archaic or old Albanian language(Arbërisht) is still preserved and spoke, same with the arvanites in greece though sadly they are dying out cause of greek assimilation and propaganda making them think they are "greek"

I might be able to explain the name Shqiperia that goes back to Pyrrhus of Epirus even earlier than him. After military expeditions in Asia minor Pyrrhus returns to Albania (Epirus) where he's given the title "Son of the Eagle" or Order of the Eagle. The name Shqip comes from the Eagle's sound Skip, Shqip and Shqiptar. TOR=TAR=TAN=TER is a suffix that means (ALL) so having said that we have Shqiperia meaning Sons and Daughter of the Eagle. During the Roman conquest the land was called Superiore by the Romans. Supe means our shoulders and Periore means Epirus or just Epir or Eper meaning Upper and Advantage in English. Barra mi Supe means Burden on your shoulders. Best of luck from Dardania.

Nice video but you got to learn more about Albania. 1st the two headed eagle it belonged to Illyrians far long before Roman empire had their one with one head, then Costatine the great an Illyrian gave two headed eagle to Byzantine empire. And the main thing and very interesting many powerfull countries or empires have used the eagle symbol but none of them been able to keep it in their nationality flag and we Albanians have this flag over 500 years. About language yes it is been teached to everybody that is it not connected to no other language and that's it, no one will tell you the truth that Albanian language it is the mother of all European languages, the indo-european should be called Illyrian-european language.

As a consequence, it is not even clear whether Illyrian was one single language or a group of languages. (Until the 1960s, the term was even used to refer to all non-Celtic languages on the western Balkan Peninsula.)...Albanians became more prominent historically in the middle ages under the ottomans. Albanians became Vizers for the ottoman armies against Christianity in the balkans therefore today Albania is more a less a Islamic state in the southern Balkan peninsula..

İf there were happen to come a cross with an animal with white color or patirtly white color on their body.. They used to beleive that an village should be established in that region cuz it was considetef an holy place as per pagan religion .. So where they used to see white(Frozen) ice they defined it as Alba.. Which comes from the root of PİE languages Bardh(white) which is the same yet in Albanian.. This is the reason why they called the region white Alba. There are plenty Alba region in Europe and USA .. But what is fascinaitg about Albanian language ..
