How did Skanderbeg Betray The Ottomans? - Part 1

How did Skanderbeg Betray The Ottomans? - Part 1
Skanderbeg. Born in the early 15th century by the name of Gjergj Kastrioti in the contemporary Principality of Kastrioti within modern-day Albania, his name now marks history books with the weight of a national hero and military marvel.
He was the son of Gjon and Voisava Kastrioti, a noble family of the Principality of Kastrioti which existed within the current Albanian borders and stood as one of the European Christian strongholds against the Ottoman Empire for some time, but eventually fell into vassalship nonetheless. As a common practice of this time, vassals were required to send one or more of their children to the Ottoman court as political hostages in a deal to ensure the loyalty of the family and principality...

Not only Skenderbeg knew the Ottoman warfare but he adapted and improved light cavalry maneuvers even further when fighting against them. After his death some of his warriors became fearsome mercenaries in other countries of Europe and their tactics eventually led to the birth of famous military units such as the Hussars, which shaped the European warfare for centuries. Because of those mercenaries the medieval French would compliment someone who rode a horse exceptionally well saying "he rides like an Albanian".

@@sotirzvanidjubre4109 Gjergj (Skanderbeg) = Albanian name. Gjon (Skanderbeg's father) = Albanian name. Pal (Skanderbeg's grandfather) = Albanian name. Etc ... You are implying that her mother may have been Serbian because she carried a Slavic name ... ( It means absolutely nothing, especially since Albanians at that time were Christian/Orthodox! ) The name "Voisava or Vojsava" is worn by a lot of Albanian women still today ... Moreover this name "Voisava or Vojsava" is almost non-existent among Serbian women today ... Then the name "Voisava or Vojsava" has a meaning in Albanian language (Illyrian): Vaissa = Girl ... ( Which is by adding the suffix -va, becomes vaissa-va, -Vojsava ) In addition to that the first name Voisava, Vojsava is carried by a lot of Albanian women still today while Serbian women do not carry this name practically! (Look in KZread etc ... ) In addition to that the city of Polog (in North Macedonia currently), where Skanderbeg's mother was born is still populated by a majority of Albanians today. Then some of Skanderbeg's brothers and sisters had Slavic and Greek names... Why ? Answer = What are the cultural names of the culture that dominates in Orthodoxy? The Slavic and Greek! Example : Vlad III Basarab, nicknamed "the Impaler" who has a Slavic name, but he is not Slavic, he is Romanian / Vlach ... He has a Slavic name because the dominant culture in the Orthodoxy is Slavic and Greek ... (that's why we found Slavic or Greek names ... think about it. ) As in Islam the dominant culture for the names are Arabic and Turkish, it's simple... The Muslim Albanians of today can have for example an Arabic or Turkish name, but it doesn't mean that they are Arabs or Turks ... it's just for the religion ...

It would seem you know nothing of the origins of our race. Our elders were the Epirotes from whence Pyrrhus himself came forth, the might of whom the Romans could barely withstand. Those very Epirotes whom with their weapons set forth and conquered Taranto and much of Italy. There exists no challenge to their might from the likes of the Tarentines, a species of wet men born only to catch fish. And since you proclaim Albania 🇦🇱 a part of Macedonia, you grant also then, our elders as nobles who went as far as India under Alexander the Great, defeating all the peoples that came before them with great ease. From those men descend these who you call sheep. But the nature of things is not changed. Why do your men run away in the faces of sheep?" Source : Book VI or Pope Pius the II's Comentaries. Origin of the name "Shqiptar" and Epirus = More concise on the issue, the only Nobel Prize in history 🎓 is none other than Theodor Mommsen 🥇 author of the cycle "Corpus of the inscriptions of antiquity" who says that: - "the brave Epirotes, the Albanians 🇦🇱 of antiquity supported with traditional loyalty the young and brave Pyrrhus or "the Eagle" as they called him" . Let us point out in this regard that the Albanians call themselves "Shqiptar", i.e. "sons or children of the Eagle". The soldiers of Pyrrhus (3rd century BC / Epirote King), called their King "the Eagle" and that the latter gave them back one day that they were his "children", so the Albanians are the children of the Eagle... "Shqiptar = child of the Eagle .... " . (Pyrrhus was the cousin of Alexander the Great, of the Molossian tribe and himself an ambitious conqueror, Pyrrhus is one of the most formidable opponents of the early days of ancient Rome). Let's not forget that nes Epirotes were an Illyrian tribe (🇦🇱) and not Greeks! There is also another interpretation of this ethnonym: the Eagle was one of the symbols of Zeus, Pelasgian god (🇦🇱) by excellence (source: cf Homer Iliad XVI,234). The Albanians would thus be the "sons of Zeus" thus "sons of the Eagle". Besides, these last ones (Albanians), whatever their religion, still call their God Zot (Zeus = Zojz = Zot), thus recalling the divine name of Zeus. On the other hand the word Shqip, before becoming an etnhonym (Shqiptar), has always designated the "Albanian language" (language shqip = clear language). Precision: Zeus was not a Greek god! (propaganda which it is spread)... Zeus was a Pelasgian god (🇦🇱) Example : Achilles : " Zeus, sovereign lord, O prince of Dodona, O you Pelasgic Zeus (🇦🇱), distant god who rules over Dodona, in this rough country of Selles... " Source: Homer, Iliad, XVI,233/234. Achilles did not say: Zeus the Greek, Zeus the Hellene or Zeus the Mycenaean... Then why in the school books, one qualifies Zeus of Greek? (just with this quotation, one realizes that modern historiography is not honest) Karl O.Müller: The more intelligence will enter the history of Greece, the more attention will be paid to the Pelasgic element sacrificed until now. Source : (Prolegomena-1825) Epirus = Historically, tribes like the Molossians or others that made up Epirus like the Kaons, Thesprotians, Paraue, Antintans and others, are historically linked to the Illyrian (🇦🇱) culture or part of it. As Thucydides tells us about the events of the Peloponnesian War, which involved both actually Illyrians and Illyria itself, these tribes were commonly considered barbarian (non-Greek) tribes. Thucydides: - "Among the barbarians there were about 1,000 Kaons who ruled without a king. In addition to the Kaons, the Thesprotians also participated and were also governed without a king. There were also the MOLOSSIANS, the Atintants and the Paraues. Source : ( HISTORY OF THE WAR OF THE PELOPONNESE ) All these tribes, mentioned by the historian of Athenian origin Thucydides for their participation in the famous war of Peloponnese in the 5th century BC, are considered as barbarians, thus not Greek! Source : ( Thucydides II, 80- IV, 126 ) The Kaons, the Thesprotians of Chamerie, the Arintans and the Parauets constitute the backbone of what was called Epirus. Among them appear of course the Molossians where are the roots of the family of the mother of Alexander the Great! And Thucydides is not the only source which defines the Epirotes like non-Greeks. There are many others! According to the encyclopedia Basic Antiquity, composed of 86 volumes... Pauly Wissowa the real "Encyclopedia Alterumswissenschaft" says that the Epirotes are of Illyrian origin 🇦🇱 and have strong ties to the population of southern Italy! Whether or not the Epirotes are Illyrians is a discussion that, from an archaeological point of view, is resolved. The Epirotes and the Illyrians have the same culture, if we consider the Iron Age, the use of tombs, the fortifications with several rows of walls, their material culture, the shape of the pots or the ornaments which are identical to those of Korça (present Albania) and the religion. Not only ancient authors such as Thucydides, Strabo and others have called the Epirotic tribes barbarians (non-Greek), but later serious publications based on documents and archaeological findings point in the same direction. The Molosses were one of the Illyrian tribes of Epirus from which came the mother of Alexander the Great, Olympias, daughter of the king and sister of Alexander the Great. The Molosses were one of the Illyrian tribes of Epirus from where came the mother of Alexander the Great, Olympias, daughter of the king, and the sister of another well known Illyrian prince, Alexander the Molossus. Moreover the Greek armed forces committed an atrocious genocide on the Albanian civil population of Epirus (Çameria)!

The most interesting thing is Moisi Golemi's betrayal. Moisi Golemi (Moisi Shkodra) was one of the best army commanders during that time in Albania, but as a person, he was a soft heart person. His idea was for Skanderbeg to stop the resistance and that it's better for Albanians to do what all of the Balkan people did (bow down to the sultan), he thought that was a better decision for the Albanians who were starving because they didn't have the economy to fight against the biggest empire in the world at the time. He saw that other Balkan people were getting their religious and ethnic rights from the Ottoman Empire and thought that Albanians are going to be assimilated by the end of this war. He joined the Ottoman empire to stop Skanderbeg from this war of destruction and self-destruction too. Obviously Skanderbeg didn't agree to that as he would think that he is the Albanian king and that his kingdom should never be conquered and tried to get help from the Pope and Naples. In the battle of Oranik (the most violent battle of them all) Moisi Golemi led an Ottoman army (15.000) against the Skanderbegs army (10.000). In this battle an ottoman soldier named Ahimaz asked for a 1v1 duel and an Albanian soldier named Zaharia Gropa accepted the duel and easily cut Ahimaz's head off. After that Moisi challenged Skanderbeg in a 1v1 duel and when Skanderbeg walked in the middle of the field Moisi ordered the attack (trying to get Skanderbeg killed) the battle started and Skanderbeg fought in the front line of the army. After 2 hours of fighting Moisi escaped after losing 10.000 soldiers ( 2/3 of the army) while Skanderbeg lost only 1000. Moisi Golemi later regret the betrayal and asked Skanderbeg for mercy, Skanderbeg accepted him back in his army. Moisi Golemi was later captured by the Ottoman forces during the battle of Ohrid (9000 Albanians+1000 Venetians against 14.000 ottomans) Albanians won the battle but 12 of skanderbegs close people were captured (Including Skanderbegs nephews and Moisi Golemi). Skanderbeg tried to pay the Sultan for their release, but the sultan executed them in public by ripping their skin alive (they all had a painful death). Skanderbeg took their revenge (based on the Albanian kanun) during the siege of Kruje in 1466 by killing Ballaban Bardhi (Baderi) and close to 30 thousand ottoman soldiers (most of them after capture).

I've not seen anyone pick up this story until now. Spread the legacy of this amazing man. From what I've read there were two main causes for the betrayal. 1) Skanderbeg was loyal to the Sultan and the Sultan was loyal to Skanderbeg. This caused jealousy amongst other influential men at court who through intrigue managed to get the Sultan to doubt Skanderbeg. This change of heart led Skanderbeg to plan his exit. 2) His personal devotion to the Virgin Mary. Fun fact, the image he used to pray in front of after he returned to Albania now resides in the Vatican.

Catholics and Sultans: The Church and the Ottoman Empire 1453-1923. Cambridge University Press. p. 33. The House of Kastrioti (Albanian: Dera e Kastriotëve) was an Albanian noble family, active in the 14th and 15th centuries as the rulers of the Principality of Kastrioti. At the beginning of the 15th century, the family controlled a territory in the Mat and Dibra regions. Exemple : Great grandfather = Kostandin Kastrioti Mazreku (died ca. 1390) was an Albanian 🇦🇱 regional ruler in parts of the wider Mat and Dibër areas. Grandfather = Pal Kastrioti was an Albanian 🇦🇱 medieval ruler in the latter part of the 14th century in northern Albania. Source : Genealogy of the Kastrioti family, Du Cange (1680), Historia Byzantina duplici commentario Even the Serbs of the time considered Skanderbeg as Albanian, his father (Gjon) was buried in an Orthodox monastery, the Serbs named the tower where he is buried "Albanian tower 🇦🇱"... source : ( Himelstir. p. 45 ) Moreover, even the descendants of Skanderbeg from the Arbëresh community qualify as Albanians 🇦🇱 and not as Serbs ... Example : Shopie Castriota, loris Castriota etc ... Alessandro Cutolo ( Italian historian ) : " Gjon ( father of Skanderbeg ) married Princess Vojsava, the daughter of another excellent Albanian🇦🇱 leader, the Lord of Polog " . Source : in is work "Skanderbeg" , p.20, published in Milan (Italy) in 1940. His mother ( Skanderbeg )came from the Muzaka family (Albanian) and not from the Brankovic family ... Father was Gjon Kastrioti, son of Pal Kastrioti. Mother was Voisava from the Muzaka-Family (as stated in the memoires of Gjon Muzaka written sometime before 1510) Documents from that time only state that she was an albanian. There are no serbian documents that state she was serbian. In his memoires Gjon Muzaka (before 1510) wrote that she is a muzaka. We only have two sources from that era that give us a hint of her origin. One is geographically and the other is ethnically . Geographic source: barleti wrote that it was from polog. Member of a noble house and tribal leader. Why tribal and not Serbian? First of all, the triballi were an ancient Thraco-Illyrian ( Albanian ) tribe. The same name was again used in the Middle Ages / Byzantine era for the inhabitants of the ancient tribal area. All the people who lived in this area were called triballi (Albanians, Bulgarians and Serbs). (And let's not forget that the Tribalians were Slavised for the majority ... But remained Thraco-Illyrian/Albanian in their blood ...) Today, the majority of Albanians in Macedonia live in the Polog region (the eastern part of Macedonia). Exemple : Appianus Alexandrinus (is a Greek historien of the Roman period) who qualified the Triballians of "Illyrian origin". Source : "historia Romana". Stephanus of Byzantium ( Great lexicographer of Constantinople, lived in the 6 th century), was written in the year 528-545, declares that the "Triballians are Illyrian. Source : From Urbibus and Populis. Other authors such as Strabo, Pliny, Ptolemy and Dion Cassius, state that the Triballians are of Thraco-Illyrian origin ( Pelasgians/Albanian ) Ethnical source: Gjon Muzaka wrote in his memoires that she was a muzaka. I think with the latter source we should conclude this whole discussion. As it is a very close source - chronological and physical. The person in this case Gjon Muzaka knew Voisava personally and he fought besides Skanderbeg and skanderbegs son. So he wouldnt dare to write something he would later regret right ? He wrote those memoires sometime before 1510 so basically before the book of barleti was printed..

The Kastrioti themselves where organised in a tribal structure and formed a fis or clan/tribe. Source : Gall, Timothy L.; Hobby, Janeen (2009). Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life: Europe. p. 27. Gjergj Kastriot Scanderbeg ( 31, October, 1460 ) : Moreover, you scorn our people, claiming the Albanians 🇦🇱 as nothing more than sheep, and according to your customs think of us with only insults. Moreover the Greek armed forces committed an atrocious genocide on the Albanian civil population of Epirus (Çameria)

Fun fact: Skanderbeg's greatest campaign wasn't against the Ottomans but the Italians and French. When Alfonso the Magnanimous (Alfonso V of Aragon) conquered Naples, he stationed the largest army in all of Europe in Sicily in anticipation to launch a Crusade when the Pope gave the signal. This never came to pass but Skanderbeg got word about Alfonso's army in Sicily and since he was fighting the Ottoman War Machine all on his lonesome, he needed an insurance policy i.e. a strong ally. He beseeched Alfonso to be his insurance policy and Alfonso heartily agreed and signed the *Treaty of Gaeta* . Alfonso, despite not declaring outright war on the Ottomans, assisted Skanderbeg in all his needs (be it men, weapons, supplies etc...) Needless to say, they developed a strong friendship. When Alfonso died, he left the Crown of Aragon to his brother (John II of Aragon) but left Naples to his *bastard* son; Ferdinand. In short, Ferdinand wasn't accepted by the Neapolitan nobility and the Italian City-States as a whole. Pretty much the whole of Italy, alongside France, declared war on Ferdinand. Guess who came to his aid? Freaking Skanderbeg. His first letter to Ferdinand was him expressing grief about Alfonso's death and the letter ended with: " *but however things may turn out I am the friend of virtue and not fortune* ." Immediately that same year, Skanderbeg landed in Naples and swept the floor with the Italians and French.

He wrote those memoires sometime before 1510 so basically before the book of barleti was printed.

He wrote those memoires sometime before 1510 so basically before the book of barleti was printed.

Besides Stefan Lazarevic who had to fight alongside Sultan Bayazid because his sister was married to the Sultan and was technically a prisoner in the Ottoman palace. Milos Obilic - pretended to defect, Assassinated Murad I. Vlad the Impaler - taken as a boy, was released then defected and waged war against the Ottomans. Skanderbeg - taken as a boy, defected and waged war against the Ottomans. There was a similar pattern amongst these guys.

According to albanian folk legend when Skanderbeg's mother was to give birth to him she saw that her son was going to be born a dragon-like child "dragua". That is a sign of immense strength and fight for justice in albanian folk. She saw that her child would fight a great hydra-like beast "kuçedra" which represents evil power. And her child would win and his name would remain through ages. Well that is exactly what happened. Skanderbeg put up 25 years of resistance against the biggest power of that time. His name caused fear into ottoman hordes and weakened their hearts. The long and difficult road to Kruja was filled with traps and ambushes and ottomans lost so many men there that they named it "the road to devil's nest" Skanderbeg himself is said to have killed thousands of ottomans in battle. His heroic deeds alone made albanians stand for about 10 more years after his death. In one difficult battle a soldier was given Skanderbeg's helmet to instill fear into ottomans. Ottomans were shocked because the knew Skanderbeg to be dead. Stories spread that Skanderbeg was an "immortal" person. Skanderbeg was "accused" by the Sultan that he used a sword given to him by the devils and that it wasn't fair. Skanderbeg sent him his sword and a letter that said "it's not about the sharpness of the sword but the power of the arm that holds it".

Therefore, a true Greek patriot and a true Albanian patriot, both would know of each other in a positive light and would be proud of one another's history and national heroes. Know I don't know the OP's opinion of this, but I hope he is of similar viewpoint on this issue.

My Brother-in-law is Albanian and I have visited Albania five times now. On one occasion we (family) with Ahmet as our guide visited this big castle at the top of this mountain where there is a museum ( also a nice open market there with lots of good stuff) which has all the historical statue and artefacts relating to this mans events. It was amazing, it looked out across a massive plain where they would of seen the Ottoman's coming from miles away. Apparently the Albanians were throwing boulders down from this point killing thousands.

“The story is that Stefan Dushan drive out the the Albanian Catholics from this district and settled it with Serbs, reducing reducing he releasing Albanian Catholics to the occupation of Shepard. After the Turks arrived, many of the Serbs fled or were killed, but Albanian inhabitants drifted back and reoccupied their former homelands. “When the patriarch of Peć, Arsenius, finally evacuated the district with his flock and feld to Hungarian lands offered him by the emperor, the Serbs in fact lost all hold and right to Kosovo.” - Robert Elsie Great Albanologist this one

Great videos man! Love the maps. But I find amusing how you pronounce words that are not English names of places or people. In all videos. The sound "C" in Slavic languages is not "k" sound, it is more "ts" as in "hats". The sound "J" is pronounced as "Y" in "yes".
