Why Is My Starter Clicking
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Over the years we have had many customers that have had issues with the starter clicking when the key is activated and immediately condemn the unit. Starter Click doesn't always mean that the starter or solenoid is bad, it could be something as simple as a loose or damaged cable or dirty connections.
This is only one type of starter, but diagnosing the source is similar on others as well.
To begin with, it's critical before removing the starter from the engine, to run a Voltage Drop Test at all locations at each end of all cables to see if there are any drops in voltage. Many times you can fix your own problem by running this test or checking all connections.
If you are not sure how to do a Voltage Drop Test, leave us a message below or give us a call 1-800-944-0494, we would be happy to help you.

Thank You for such an amazing video. No nonsense and straight to the point. Your Explanation and showing the click AND how to fix said click is AMAZING!!! You have won the internet award of century Sir!!!
I love how people in an age of infinite information are completely incapable of giving information. Thanks for this info.
This video helped me out big time! Other videos recommend checking the negative grounding wire, but this is the first video that recommended checking the positive cable - that was the solution!
Please Forgive us......we want to apologize to everyone that left comments (questions / concerns / etc) that we didn't respond to. I guess we forgot to enable All Comments when we first uploaded our videos. We did not intentionally ignore your comment. So, if you bare with us, we will do our best to reply to your comments even if they are no longer helpful. Again, we apologize.
Thanks for your clear explanation and diagnosis, as it helps us rookies try to do this ourselves when things go clicky!
Excellent video!! Indept, concise. Thank you. I have new starter coming to me next week, I'll be bench testing it w/battery 1st. Then i'll check the wires to make sure they're supplying correct voltage to engage the starter. Problem i had last week with start, it was whirrling but the bendex was not pushing the gear into the flywheel. I tested it on bench and everything worked on indepedant supply from battery, .(however this was BEFORE I was aware of the ignition to power jump, meaning the +12 power terminal, needed to be connected to the ignition terminal as you did in video). I tested the battery on multimeter and got 12.26v which is low, but instructions claimed anything over 12.20 is sufficient. Currently charging said battery so it should be fully juiced for the new starter. I also need to check the alternator to be sure it's charging the battery adaquently, once the battery and starter are tested, and after the wires are checked. quite a process. Thank you for this video.
They really emphasize the importance of a good ground. The extra ground could be my gremlin.
Old 1986 Tractor - starter clicked, tested battery which was OK volt wise. Priced replacement starter - yeps $$$ . Friend said clean battery terminals which looked ok. Worth a try - Cleaning and re-doing terminals fixed the problem. Saved lots $$$.

Thank you very, very much for your informative demonstration. This video in and of itself has taught me a lot about how starters actually work. The other few thousand videos on KZread about "diagnosing a bad starter" or "starter clicking noise" are just guys with their phones pointing at parts in their engine bay. Again, thank you. P.S., I must respectfully disagree with someone in the comments, Toyota (as a whole, not saying that they never had some bad years) definitely does not make the worst starters. Have yourself a Kia or a Nissan for a couple of years & then get back to me. :)
No apology needed your giving people info they would normally have to pay for if they can't handle that then they shouldn't tinker.
Starter works fine when it knows its being handled by a mechanic,but,when im turning on the engine it fails...changed the battery still the same
Hello,Sir, i Have a Bosch KB Starter Motor Most of the time is working good,rarely grinding but often clicking, when you hit it Hammer it works We check and tight cable but problem not solved yet
You remind me of Alex Trebec of Jeopardy.My starter still work when I tap it.
If the starter makes a clicking noise and the ground cable is warm does this indicate the starter might be good and there is a possibility that there might be a mechanical problem forcing the starter
i had this happen to me twice in my life time loose conn where neg cable connects to frame .two different cars
I have a starter on a Genie cherry picker, its a Deutz F4L1011F diesel engine. I got an intial partial crank then just a whole lot of clicking. Changed battery, still the same. took the starter off and bench tested it. Solenoid works as it pushes the bendex forwards and and the gear rotates. There is a SLIGHT unsteadiness of the bendex gear in its position, but it seems to run strongly. Does the quick fire clicking suggest a lack of engagement with the flywheel? Or maybe the motor is on the way out and doesnt have the power to turn the flywheel?

My 300sd's starter has failed 5 times now and each time i have to tap the starter while someone else cranks it and the engine fires ups. Do you know what causes a starter to get stuck? I bought a new solenoid for my starter but im concerned the problem lies with the starter and not the solenoid but my starter is from 2017. - it looks brand new!

I have an 89 Chevy Caprice with a small block 305. Maybe you can throw me a bone. My starter is clicking, battery is good and even had it jumped while trying to turn it on. I had moved my ground wire because it was loose to the front exhaust bolt on the passenger side but it just clicked. I moved it the the cylinder head and it seems like it’s trying to turn over but barely and it just clicks. Do I need to run a ground strap from the head to the chassis?

the plunger is at fault, you'll' know by holding down the ignition key and banging on the starter with a hammer. if it starts again, its because the pounding causes enough shock and internal momentum to get a good contact for the plunger to send power to the rest of the starter. plungers are known to get sticky and dirty
Could be bad ignition switch, starter relay, Fuses, bad ground, and many more.
One question in that Scenario where the starter was just clicking. What are you supposed to do to correct that?
@HagemeisterEnterprisesINC
4 жыл бұрын
In most cases the starter solenoid is not getting enough current to activate, so it just clicks. It needs to have some sort of relay to power the solenoid to take the load off the key switch. That’s typically how these clicking problems are fixed.

Do you have an automatic or stick shift? Either one has a interrupt neutral safety switch. So you can’t start it without the clutch in, or the transmission in park. That could be the problem. If you decide to put in a starter button, you don’t need to disconnect the key switch, just the wire on the starter solenoid. Tape the start wire off. Attach the starter button wire to the solenoid. If you have any more questions, let me know. Hope this helps.

When it is clicking, check the voltage down by the starter - ( this will take two people). This should maintain 9.5 - 10 volts during crank time. The alternator should be charging 13.5 - 14.5 volts when running. Make sure the alternator has power at the back post and key on power in the alternator plug. Then report back.

@leandro odds are it’s because the two solenoid copper contacts which transfer battery power to the starter motor are pitted badly, thereby dropping the effective voltage delivered to the starter motor. that would be one reason that would explain why it spins slowly on the bench compared to the other gentleman, and why when you put it in the vehicle it only extends the Bendix into the fly wheel but won’t turn the vehicle over.😁😁👀

How do you know if your engine is locked
@lukemclaughlin8703
3 жыл бұрын
I know it might be a little late but get the biggest ratchet you can and find a socket that fits the crankshaft pulley and turn it over by hand, if it spins quite freely with a little bit of resistance it is not locked up if there is 0 or very little resistance it is most likely that there is no compression which can be done to worn piston rings, if it doesnt turn over or it only spins a little bit and stops it is locked up and will need either replaced or repaired as it could be hydro locked, smashed valves or pistons, hope this helps!

Leandro Figueiredo , This test simulates an open circuit. If you hear this clicking, check the following: 1.) check all connections between starter and battery. 2.) check entire length of all cables for signs of damage 3.) thoroughly clean all connections on cable and Battery 4.) make sure all connections are tight and securely.

My started developed the classic 'Click no start'', I got the starter out and proceeded with the bench test, TEST 1, Negative to the case and positive to the positive terminal 1 on the starter, Result Solenoid works and motor does not spin, TEST 2, Negative to the case and positive terminal 2 on the starter, Result Starter works perfectly and so does the solenoid when power is supplied to the signal post, What could be the issue ? is it the armature , solenoid, Bendix or the brushes. I was told if the armature is shorted , it would never spin.
