I string my Pure Aero Tour with Hyper-g 115 at 50/48 lbs in summer, 48/46 lbs in winter. A bit lower in crosses increases a bit the spin potential, and slightly softer on the arm. And I like the thinner string, it feels livelier and softer.

So I have had to change string tensions and types over the last 8 years of playing due to arm problems and moving to very different places. When I was in Texas with high humidity and being less than 800 ft above sea level i would get mine done at about 48-52. When I moved to Las Vegas that was way to low as I was hitting the fence more times then the court. Vegas is anywhere from 2000 to 2300 ft above sea level with no humidity so I started to have string higher from 54-58. It is always fascinating to hear you talk about the differences in strings since a few pounds can play dramatically different or similar depending on where you play. Love the videos!

That doesn't really make sense because the ball travels further in humid air. Seems like low altitude with no humidity and low altitude with high humidity should offset.

Agree with others. By maintaining the same string and tension as your preferred racquet in the other frames, you get to really see what the frame is doing. Great job!!! I have test tons of strings and hybrid combos, and my fav is STILL: Tecnifiber Black Code 18 in the mains at 48lbs and Prince Premier Power (former LT) in the crosses at 50lbs.

It also depends on your string density. 48lbs on 18x20 will have more control than in a 16x19 bed.

Ive tried about 15 different rackets, 20 ish sets of strings, and a tonne of different tensions, My current set up is Head Prestige MP with Natural gut mains at 57lbs and Pro Hurricane Tour crosses at 54lbs. Its taken me over a year to refine it to something I’m 99% happy with. Owning my own Stringing machine certainly helps in this process too.

Interesting comment. I'm a hybrid guy. I love to experiment with mixes. My starting tension is 50 pounds, whatever the string may be. But I always go up when we play outdoor in the summer, especially if we have hot weather(June, July and August). As soon as we reach September, I go down to my original tension(between 48 and 52). Having 4 racquets, I always have one that's low(48) and one that's higher(52) with 2 racquets of the same tension(around 50). This way, I adapt to the conditions and to my OWN condition....

My tension varies depending on the size of the racquet head, how dense the string pattern is, how stiff and powerful the racquet is and - most importantly - the type of string that I am using. Usually I string in the exact middle of the suggested range if I am using a synthetic gut. For a multifilament, I would up the mid tension by 2 lbs. as that type of string has a lot of power. If I string with a polyester then I drop the mid tension by 5 lbs. because that type of string is very stiff. Lately, I have been moving towards the softer synthetic gut like Ashaway but I also like Gamma synthetic gut. If the frame has an open 16 x 18/19 string pattern then I will use Gamma synthetic gut with Wearguard. I like Head Lynx polyester in 16 gauge also.

I go Luxilon Element 16L on my mains at 54 and Babolat Synth on crosses at 58... Makes the entire bed a little more responsive, not as stiff and a little cheaper each racket too :). It's right that you have to gauge what tension the strings will perform best at, and experimenting is fun! Also a side note, if you are gonna be hitting hard at a low tension, your racket control needs to be really tuned in! That's why pros can play on crazy low tensions... they have perfect timing, hit the sweet spot every time and brush over the ball to keep it in... not intuitively... much harder to do than go high tension and bang!

  • @TenniswithAlex

It's about the stringbed stiffness, not the tension that is important. You may need stringbed stiffness machine to test the stringbed for your clients. It will be very useful when they (or you) would like to try different strings (stiffer, softer) or racquet headsizes, string patterns that you have the stringbed stiffness (DT value in kg/cm) as the reference to adjust the tension. 48lbs of natural guts is completely different from stiff polys and it might give you inaccurate judgement to the strings :-D. One important parameter of the strings that tennis manufacturers try to hide to the elongation of the strings. Less elongation -> stiffer (poly like). More elongation -> softer (natural gut like). Also at different tension ranges, strings elongate differently (tend to elongate less or more) that directly affect the stringbed stiffness.

If you're pro then the opponent's hitting style matters. If you're amateur, your opponents are not gonna be good enough to hit hard or serve hard and win. So just string at the tension you're comfortable with.

wow this video is very insightful. I am an intermediate player borderling advanced, but I always use 56/54 on any racquet. I have used Pure Strike, Pure Drive and Pro Staff (11.3 oz version) in the past. I demoed Pure Strike and I thought it was great, so I bought one and it was strung at 56/54, but it was a horrible experience. I left the racquet untouched for almost two years, I took it out this summer, it has been amazing since the tension has dropped significantly. I recently restrung my Pure Drive at 56/54, it's still too high, I don't even want to play matches with it. Now I know why!

I've been using a Head Graphene 360 Radical Pro for close to a year now and for a control racquet I'm liking it at 47lbs. I've tried it with Wilson NXT at 53lbs and thought it was okay, Tourna Big Hitter Black 7 at 51lbs and hated it, Solinco HyperG at 47lbs and enjoyed it and am now using Solinco Confidential at 47lbs and so far it's my favorite. At lower tension I get better pocketing and feel.

Used 47lbs for a full poly but having gravitated towards tighter pattern/thinner beam racquets, now prefer multi or gut on mains so typically start with 52 mains, 48 poly crosses and take it from there... need comfort and some power from strings

  • @LarzB

Depends a little bit on the gauge.. I play with 48 pounds on 1.2mm (17) solinco tour bite and 51 pounds on a 1.15mm (18) solinco confidential when it is in the main. The cross I always string 2kg less (about 4 pounds). This gives it a nicer stringbed as the racket is a 16x19 or 18x20 pattern. More strings on the cross equals lower tension in my rackets to have an equal balance between mains and crosses.

  • @raikahoken

Thanks for the tips. Not sure about using the same tension to compare rackets though. If the rackets are similar then sure, but if they are very different then maybe the tensions should be adjusted. For example I used to play with a pro staff 90 at 45 lbs. But if I switch to a RF97, I probably should start at 50 or 52 just because it's a very different racket.

Very good advice. I play full bed poly @40lbs or lower still with thinner gauge strings, so I'm fully in the Jack Sock camp. The challenge with lower tension setup is to consistently hit the ball early so ultimately, it teaches you better skills with the added comfort and safety from elbow and shoulder injuries.

I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting on strings and tensions. For 4.0+ players: Synthetic gut full bed and multis full bed, don’t go under 55lbs on any racquet with a stiffness higher than 65(pure drive). It will be a rocket launcher if you go lower. Co-poly full bed I could do 52lbs co-poly mains 54/multi or synthetic cross at 52. String pattern and weather is a huge factor also. During the heatwave here in LA, anything under 54lbs in the daytime is causing the ball to fly so easily in a 16x19 but is doable in a 18x20 frame.

Before I used only poly string 16 g , 17 g and even 18 g and every time I put new string I used different tension from 47 to 63. In this case 17 g with 55 tension was the best for me. Then I try hybrid string starting again with 47 to 63 lbs. For my game which is power baseline shots and occasionally volleys I prefer hybrid string with 17 g or 18 g poly on main and tension 53lbs.

The Ashaway is great (better comfort, better feel), but breaks more easily (my racquet stringer broke two sets just trying to string my racquets - although its much better now that I supply the Ashaway stringing instructions to him when I get them restrung). Thinking of switching to the Wilson Clash, with maybe Solinco Hyper G 18 gauge - I like your advice to switch the racquets first but keep the strings / tension the same to see what the racquet does, then go from there. I'm 65, so full poly strung tightly is not an option for this old player.

When I switched to the 16X19 98 blades & started using polys (tour bite) poly/hybrids I found 48 lbs no matter the string is my magic tension best balance of power. control and sweet spot for me. I hit mostly aggressive full throttle topspin. find it a little harder to control blocked shots and flat volleys but have adjusted love the feel and results at 48lbs the ball really jumps off the court. No right or wrong, depends on the feel you like and what racket you use. As your skills and power improve the likelihood is an increase in tension. As you age and fitness drops with a hurting elbow, the likelihood is that the tension drops. Thats my personal experience playing tennis for over 30yrs. Using natural during competitive days to multifilaments in my later years and currently polys for bit more spin, despite the slight elbow pain. I have 3 Pure Aeros, and i string 52, 53, 54 on 17 gauge Rpm Blast black. I choose which i prefer depending on my condition on play day. 😎😁 in my younger days, 20-30yrs ago, i string between 56 to 60lbs on various rackets

You are right. In my case, I like to string my gravity pro at 45 lbs and I know it's a 18x20 100 in² frame. If I'm testing a smaller headsize with the same string pattern, I may go 1 or 2 lbs lower to see if I get simillar feel. If I'm testing a 16x19 smaller headsize I may stick to the same tension as my gravity, and so on and so forth.

Considering head size and pattern probably wouldn’t even use the same gauge let alone tension of string....

Tennis spin-have a question. I buy and have strung two rackets of same type, same 57 lbs. If I use the one for a year (only play 1 time per week Max) and the other just sits in house for a year. Which racket will lose tension more and by approximately how much? I do this to avoid having it strung around where I live. (I know I've been told to wait to have second stung) anyway just curious about that. Thanks!

21kg (~46lb) Volkl Cyclone 18 - Currently using a Blade 98s (2015) but just received this AM a Clash 98 and a Blade 98s 2020 to demo. I like my strings best after 2hrs of play and for the 10 hours after that, then they move too much (need to put them back into place after each point - Fognini style ;-)

Nice information. Thank you. I am recreational player play on clay 5 days a week. 45 lbs using mostly hyper G and or Tourbite. Does clay court tension varies from hard court or grass? Or players can play with same tension on all surfaces. Thanks.

Probably a stupid question but can you tell what the tension is of the strings you have on ? I have bought a second hand racket (head radical pro) that has different strings on cross & main - I love it - the seller said “Head sonic pro mains 55lb and babolat origin cross 56lb” but feels too springy to be that now - is there any to know the current tension ?

Interesting video! Commentators, please give also string type and gauge not just tension ,otherwise its not very useful. I’m a 3.5/4.0 63 year old male , have shoulder issues while serving but seems only with my flat serve ( first serve) not so much with slice serve probably because I dont relax and release enough on flat serve..... been playing with a pure drive for 3 years with full bed of X One at 57# down to 53# ( aggressive full court player with baseline top spin). I love the PD for the serve and top spin but thinking switching to Ezone 100 . Any advice ?

I do 48 mains and 45 crosses with Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.25 in Yonex VCORE 95. Tomorrow I'll get one strung like that and the other with Volkl Cyclone Tour 1.20 to try, mains and crosses both 1 lbs higher. Next time when I get both restrung with YPTP, I'll see how low I can go while still maintaining enough control.

You mentioned in your 'Prince' video that stringers sell rackets. Well in my case, not only did the stringer sell me the rackets, he sold me on the strings and tension (58 on main and 55 on the cross). I have learned to play with this setup on the 'Banana' (RPM blast / TNT) and just stick to it.

I like the idea of stringing my raquest lower (around 48 pounds) but will it loosen at the same rate as a more tightly strung raquet. I think 48 pounds would be great but if it dropped off to say 40, I think that would be too much of a trampolene effect for me.

I’ve tested a few different poly strings at our club with stringster app and tourna string gauge. it’s amazing how many players have dead polys in there racquets. The hybrids mask this but the tension difference between crosses and mains can be 20lb different. Luxillon alu power seem to loose tension fastest. I tested some rackets after a month that had lost 25lb of tension.

I string my racket at 24kg (53pounds) And I like it the best after like a day, so i guess my prefereed tension is around 50 pounds or something. Probably would string it at 23kg / 50pounds if I would restring it daily. But I do it once every 2 months, maybe once a month if i play a lot.
