Why is my black powder not fast even with willow charcoal?

Фильм және анимация

I will do another update on this willow powder to see if the dry time helps it but I really think it does. Maybe double granulation works and I might do a test on that since I have the fresh willow powder.

What i do is i roll my kno3 for about 2 days to a super fine powder, then i mix the kno3 sulfer and airfloat charcoal. After i mill the chemicals together for around 3 days its almost as fast as commercial black powder after granulating with 50 50 rubbing alcohol and water.

Important thing to mention for everyone. Both kno3 and charcoal are hygroscopic. They attract alot of moisture. You want to make sure theyre both dry before mixing. If theres moisture present you will throw your ratios off and not be getting a true 75-15-10. You can oven dry both at around 200° F for a few hours. Only dry each chem individually. DO NOT HAVE THEM MIXED while drying in the oven.

Correct that’s a great point and I have baked my Kno3 before making the powder and now that you mention it that’s possible I did that with my old willow which is pretty fast. Thank for the input and that’s a great piece of advice to help those having issues.

@@YehLow yes like I said, if there's moisture present, you won't be getting the correct ratio. Example, say moisture is in your potassium nitrate. You go weigh out 75 grams. But there's 10% of moisture that's present in your kno3. So in reality you only have 65 grams. I question the same thing too when I got into making bp. Like why does it matter if I'm already going to wet it anyways? Its all about having the correct weight.

i know its dumb, but i use a old pan and a hotplate outside on low to dry out my black powder and it even make mixed hard wood charcoal burn pretty fast, i only do small amounts at a time because of the hazard but definitely do it with a fire extinguisher nearby.

  • @hubert3919

Fire extinguisher would do ****, since black powder contains the oxidizer, it doesn't need oxygen from the air. On the other hand, it'd long gone into smokes before you make your first step to reach for the extinguisher. And hopefully you're smart enough not to place any flammable objects around, so again, no point of the extinguisher.

It's all speculation as someone commenting. Moister can be one cause. Charcoal can be one. Mill time can be one. I only use acetone. I ball mill min 24 hours or longer. I've used quite a few types of wood for Charcoal. Think I'm still using cheap flour of sulfur.

Yes acetone would be solid to dry much faster and I don’t use straight water I use a 75/25 alcohol to water for mine

So I use cook book mixed hardwood and boy is it fast. I use 70% alcohol as binder and I granulate 3/4 times u have to granulate more than once and let it dry in between doesn’t take long to dry. I screen it let it dry go to work come back re screen it then in morning I’ll screen for last time then when I get off work it’s ready to go. I’ll upload a video soon I have to make new lift anyways

even the red cedar stuff was nowhere as fast as it should have been. I think your mill is probably not optimized. the RPM could be incorrect for the mill jar size. I turn my 6" jar at about 70 rpm. its only 1/3 full of media and i put just enough chems in to cover the media fully. Milled for 3 hours, it produces bp that burns with more of a thump than a whoosh. Also if you can, try and use a minimum of 25% isopropyl mixed with your water. it aids in drying time and surface tension. keeping the nitrate in the pores of the charcoal is important. Drying it fast also helps. slow drying causes the nitrate to form crystals and leach out of the mixture. your granules will sometimes have a slight sparkle to them when that's the case. Another major issue you could be facing is your carbonization level. overcooking your charcoal will make even the best woods behave terrible. In my many many attempts I have noticed that when I carbonize the charcoal less and pull it off the heat when it is still producing a small amount of gas, it works best. the volatile content matters immensely. Terpenes, methane, tar, turpentine, sap, resin, all change the burning speed. overcooking it and removing it all destroys the quality. to test the above issue, try some common charcoal called "the good charcoal" its 100% acacia and the large pieces are still wood on the inside. try using the smaller shards in the bag. its unheard of for barbecue charcoal to make good bp, but acacia makes some that is in the 80th percentile for the fastest BP around. It is sold at target and home depot in almost all locations. Let me know if you try it please? I would love to know how it goes. On my channel, most the shells shown are broken with acacia charcoal BP.

I've never used Willow for my BP. I was wondering, though. Do you think it matters which type of willow you use? I mean, we have Pussy Willow, Weeping Willow, and one more I can't remember the name. Do you think it makes a difference? I've never heard anybody say one way or the other. Thanks for another great video.

Willow is not a hotter charcoal. Eastern red cedar is too hot for lifting heavy large caliber multibreaks at times.. you need to be milling for at least two hours before the granulation process.. if you have an efficient mill 1/2 full of media and mill for the required time then granulation on a hot day will make the fastest powder.. the crystals your seeing is kno3 crystallizing out of the coal pores.. faster drying times don’t let the kno3 have a chance to slowly leech and solidify out. So good mill times, fast dry times = fast powder.

No dextrin as I don’t need the granules to be hard I just want to keep the dust down when pressing them so they’re good enough without a binder. I forgot to mention for those that don’t know detrimental slows the BP down which is why we only use 1% if you did use it.

Incorrect, granulating gunpowder more than once will make it the same speed everytime. The amount of time that you have rolled the dry gunpowder then granulate it, that will increase the speed of the black powder. Rolling the gunpowder for 1 day will have a decent speed but if you roll the drymix for several days like i do then your gunpowder will be extremely fast.
