Why Is Movie Popcorn So Expensive?

The first 1,000 people to sign up to Skillshare will get their first 2 months for free: skl.sh/infographics32
The movie business might seem like a glamorous industry with celebrities strutting down red carpets to watch premieres, but the economics of the biz is a complicated affair with many financial factors at play. Movies are media for the masses, and the price of a movie ticket remains affordable in most places around the world. The price of popcorn, sodas, and candy, on the other hand, is on the rise at movie theaters. Are moviegoers being ripped off? Or is there more behind these premium rates for low-cost items? And how did popcorn find its way into the movie theater in the first place? That’s what we’ll explore today, in this episode of The Infographics Show, Why is movie popcorn so expensive?

The obvious answer is that once you step into the cinema, they gain a monopoly. They are able to charge unfair prices and people will still buy it due to the inelasitcity of the product (people will buy it almost regardless of the price within reason) and the lack of competition which would naturally drive down the price. I belive that this is the answer to the title. There are other arguments, however, including the possibility that the cost accounts for the cleaners. If you don't buy popcorn, you're less likely to make a mess but if you do, somebody must clear it up so it's an easy mechanism to counteract litter issues the cinema may encounter. You could also think that the demographic of movie-goers is quite homogenous so these types of people have a high amount of welfare to be gained from the film thus are willing to pay extra to improve the experience. I probably put a bit too much effort into this comment but whatever

I'll put my argument real simple if movie theaters didn't make their concessions so expensive they simply would not exists because of how much it cost to make a movie today everything basically has to go up I understand if your upset about the prices but i will give you a really easy solution just don't go

Having worked for a theater company I know the old joke "we're a candy store that shows movies". Popcorn per box is pennies. Jumbo sodas that sell for $2.00 get .25 of ingredients including the cup. It's all profit. The movie itself may or may not make anything so concessions is the bread and butter lol. It's a strange biz and what it cost to show a film varies with distributor and state. Disney is evil BTW.

AMC theater where I go to, just for a small soda it's $6... For combo for a large popcorn and a drink is $20. For candy it is anywhere from $5-10. Also a movie ticket can be up to $15. I had to pay around 80-100$ for me and my two friends with popcorn.....

30 years ago I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. At that base theater, movies was a $1.25 but your ship could subsidize the cost down to .60 cents. Back then you could(and I did) go to the McDonald's on base, get a value meal, plus apple pie, and take the whole bag, out in the open, into the theater. Chow down, and as long as you took your trash out with you it was cool. Man, do I miss that!

I am dissipointed that some people still don't understand that you can snuggle in snacks and drinks. Woukd you rather A, spend extra money and wait in long lines for theater door. Or b, bring snacks you prefer and save money.

American Movie theaters have the wrong Business model. Here where i live (Paraguay), Movie theaters are build in Shopping Malls instead of being build as separate buildings. This brings in more clientele for the Mall it self and the Theater it self is more sustainable as a business as there is an entire Shopping mall sustaining the Theater instead of a Puny concession stand.

The most expensive movie ticket is NRs 490, comparable to USD 4.9. Also, consider the fact that my country is a under developed with a medium HDI. That is expensive here.

A long time ago, production companies would also own the movie theaters where tickets, and I believe concessions, too, were cheaper. The Supreme Court handed down an anti-trust law that stopped production companies from doing that and then movie theaters were their own entity, but now they had to bid for the rights to show that movie. This is why 80% of ticket revenue goes to the production companies and movie theaters raise the price of their concessions.

Most of the time I'll get popcorn and a soda. But if money's an issue or if I'm running late, I'll usually just grab a soda from the lobby's vending machine - I can go 2.5 hours without eating, but I do get parched if I don't have something to drink.

I work at a theater and they let me in for free. I have done it only twice this year. Watching at home > watching in theaters! They often stink of your fellow patrons BO or some nasty hot dog or something and you don't have to deal with crying babies/talking/sounds of 20 people crinkling things and eating. Also if you are watching a scary movie absolutely nothing beats alone at night on your computer with headphones.

Since i live in a small city there is nobody seling popcorn at the movie theather , you just buy them in a store near the theather and nobody will stop you , even the guy who checks the tickets and of 1 kg of popcorn is the equivalent of 2 dolars but you have to share it with friends
