This video covers a side of Minecraft that most others don't... It covers the timeless, nostalgic, lonely nature of Minecraft in a way that has never been done before. It covers topics like Minecraft's nostalgia, the true scale of a Minecraft world and how big it is and also Minecraft's soundtrack and why its so important to Minecraft as a whole. This video also briefly covers the decile of Minecraft and why it came back to life. it has a mood of darkness throughout most of the video followed by a happy ending.
I tried much harder on this video than my previous one, it better highlights the true lonely nature of Minecraft and how it can be sort of horrific. I hope you guys enjoyed this one as much as I did whilst making it. Sorry the video took so long to make but I hope its worth it for y'all.
Please give me feedback as I'm always trying to improve!

out of my years of playing Minecraft, I've noticed this in like 3 years of me playing. Another thing that I've also noticed while playing Minecraft is that you completed something, alr cool, but who are you going to share it with if you're alone? This video literally explains everything, now im starting to think about life choices on my Minecraft world.

I can wholeheartedly agree with this. I am 28 and only recently started playing mc a few months ago. I get kind of engrossed in games like this, and at first, an empty canvas was exhilarating. I enjoyed the learning, the building of farms and exploring. Eventually going to the end and beating the game, then exploring the end itself. There was a lot of fun with it all. But recently, I've kind of hit a wall. I am really alone in life and dont have any friends.. much less anyone to play with. After a while it kind of makes me more depressed and alone than not. Theres a few things I've yet to do, like explore an ancient city or ocean monument. So I can't say I've done *everything*, but.. Well. Once you have all the farms and all the this and that, eventually I'm just left afk, staring into space and listening to that sound track. Feeling so alone I cant help but want to stop playing. I read recently on how minecraft is, essentially, a base-building game. You build your base, add onto your base, make farms in your base, and make new bases. but at a certain point, after doing the few lines of progression in the game, you kind of run out of things to do, except for more base-building. I suppose this is different in groups with actual friends, but.. Well. I don't know. Some days this game just makes me feel more alone than anything.

Really smart comment, I can completely agree with all of this! I share the same experience even though i been playing Minecraft for most of my life, i remember first picking it up, being fascinated by its freedom, and then realizing how pointless it is. I'm glad there's more people that can relate to me with this.

Last time I played this game prior to summer of 2022 was July 2011. I got lost at sea, couldn't find my way back to base and just signed off with then intention of maybe coming back to it later. I've long lost my original account which a friend and I purchased back in 2010 and had a lot of fun with it. But I slowly forgot about the game until the trolling of "squeakers" was big around 2013-2014 and I got a kick out of those videos at the time. Never made me want to play again, until 2 summers ago, some buddies were playing and I got a bigly nostalgic urge to play again and have been playing on and off since then. So much had changed from when I originally started playing over a decade ago, but the core of the game is still there. That excitement to explore and expand, building bases all over the place, the excitement/addictiveness of spelunking, looking diamonds and other rare ores keeps you playing for far longer than you had planned to for the night. The combat still sucks imo and isn't all that fun, cheap deaths like when a creeper just spawns on top of you and blows you up, losing all your goods you've collected, leaving me cursing and ranting about how much I hate this fooking game! But still, I keep coming back to it. It really is a timeless classic and one of the best video games ever made. As for it being spooky, it sorta still is but back then it had more of an off putting vibe to it. Especially in the free browser version of the game. I still remember booting that up the first time and building a dirt cube house, in the middle of a lime green field with trees and dirt hills around me with that thick fog blocking out the further distance landscapes. It was creepy in a way, but the ability to create whatever I wanted was so much fun! Building has come such a long way from those day's too, it's wild that this game has lasted as long as it has and I am glad it stood the test of time and that people still enjoy it.

Just noting that your use of music at the start is very well-done. I find it tricky to get the right balance between narration and music and the fade under in a way that feels not-sudden. One thing you didn't really touch on with the sound design: the lack of ambient noise. Throughout the whole world, there's no ambient noise playing. No birds chirping, no wind blowing, no leaves rustling. The only sounds that don't come from you or the soundtrack come from other mobs. Playing with a mod that adds ambience will noticeably feel less lonely.

I agree with the video and I love the aspect of loneliness in Minecraft. However with each update it feels like the feeling of loneliness and isolation is being taken away. There’s now signs of civilization everywhere, ship wrecks, ancient cities, trial chambers, trail ruins etc. There’s a safe village of friendly villagers every couple hundred blocks. There’s now goofy evil villains that populate the world in the illagers. The nether is filled with semi-friendly sentient piglins. Every update just adds structures or characters that make you feel more comfortable and less alone in the world. I get why people miss the old versions of Minecraft as the current direction they’re taking the game just feels wrong. If they ever added that hide and seek creature to the mineshafts it would take away more of isolation when underground. The game’s direction has definitely shifted to making the world feel less lonely and more inhabited like any other rpg game.

To me the real fear is the "IF". What if when i turn a corner I'm going to see someone or something else. Well, of course that if never comes true, but that causes the tension to keep building. And since minecraft is not an horror game, there is no jumpscare to release the tension. It keeps building and building until you feel on edge and uneasy. This only happens to us old time players because we don't have that sense of discovery or curiosity that drives us to keep going. Well, of course different players have a different sense of exploration, but that is the difference: new players "discover" we instead "explore". A world bigger than our own, yet we feel like we have seen it all. To me its terrifying because every time i play minecraft i feel so damn empty and it doesn't make sense for such a vast and enjoyable game to make you feel like that. But that's only for some people. The vastness of the minecraft world for some people like me is a prison and a source of loneliness, yet for some people its a source of comfort and, in some kind of way, fulfillment. You don't have to try and make your mark on the world, there isn't someone else to judge you and how you play. Its just you and your imagination. And it sucks because i want to enjoy minecraft like that again but i cant anymore.

Great video, but one critique to the end. It felt a bit forced to speak about the "haters" and critics of the game to basically simply come to the point of "Its here to stay". While the statement is correct and while a lot of critics are somewhat delusional in their critique (I can say that, I was a giant critic of the game for a few years now until I rekindled my love for the game), the critique itself still has merit. I have only quite recently stopped caring about the issues I saw and still see but that does not make the issues go away. And Mojang even agrees with the issues I have seen and others too. Its why Villager trading is once more being overhauled. Its why we got Caves and Cliffs as an update. Its why we got the Trial Chambers. A lot of good content as an update to keep players engaged. Before I rekindled my love for the game and just played I didnt care for it. I hated it. I didnt see the point. Now? Well I just beat the Enderdragon with friends on my self hosted server and I am making a fancy armor using the new armor trims in my cave base I am building up. None of it has any purpose but the purpose I personally give it. But that is something many critics also dont seem to understand. People like me sought out progress when progress was something Minecraft didnt want to deliver. But in turn it would go more indepth. So no, people dont forget its the most popular game for a reason. They understand the reason. They and me to an extend, just didnt understand the idea as to what made Minecraft, Minecraft. Seeking an experience that simply wasnt there but felt like was given to us.

It's not anymore. 10 minutes can find you many varying types of structures and probably a village or two with all the humans and resources you could possibly want. Maybe 10 years ago you could make this claim but it's just not the case anymore.

I l literally say that the world is littered with structures. My point is that there isn’t any intelligent life in a Minecraft world. What I mean by devoid of life is devoid of intelligent life.

I enjoyed this video essay its good and i understand the point youre making however i have to disagree with your reasoning somewhat , i think that endless possibilities and the whole do what you want is what leaves a mark, saying that because the world is so big youre but a tiny dot is insignificant considering the player is the one experiencing the world through their eyes the rest wouldnt matter what does matter is the things they do create and interact with creating memories spending days sometimes months or some even years on a certain project minecraft mimics being stranded on an island who's to say somebody wouldnt find happiness and enjoyment along the way sharing builds with friends visiting other peoples creations or just looking back at your world and thinking i did that and feeling proud a silly idea you had in your mind came into existence only restricted by the bounds of your own imagination minecraft is supposed to be a sandbox which is ... well empty , dont read too much into it its a positive thing at the end of the day a game shouldn't make someone feel lonely then maybe sandbox games arent for you or just try multiplayer i get your point but i think what youre seeing as a negative thing is actually very much a mirror of finding happiness in smaller things in real life and at the end of the day curiosity and creativity and meaning Also I'd like to add one thing I think over the course of several updates minecraft has become more rpg like than sandbox like which confuses the player somewhat and I admit myself as well so there are attempts of understanding game mechanics that I think are simply just there for the purpose of being 'there' like a lot of structures just exist to support the rpg playstyle while still being a sandbox and not explaining any lore or reason behind it this is the fault of the devs I don't hate the updates but the implementation are a bit lazy and well confusing you know adding stuff doesn't make something better sometimes it just confuses more

I understand your point but I never directly said that the infinite nature of Minecraft is a negative thing- at the end of the video I briefly show a different perspective which is similar to yours. I never said I hate Minecraft because of this. I do know that these aspects of the game can be easily mitigated by using mods or just playing multiplayer, but I decided to focus on a more vanilla and traditional way of playing Minecraft, which is fundamentally lonely. Thanks for the feedback!

@@bam_marks It does really, but I actually seem to have a bit fun with friends. I've given up playing alone because I was a very lonely kid and I used to do all sorts of things with Modded MC, creative, and all just being empty and alone in my corner of my home. Sometimes in even flat worlds (I've built so many things in flat world just because my laptop was weak) for whatever reason, it never felt that lonely back then. It was just my daily life. today thinking of it it feels like lonely and wow how did I manage that but yeh.
