During wedding season ( normally on school holidays), it's pretty common to be invited at least 2, 3 or more wedding on the same date. We tried to go all weddings to honor them. That's one of the reasons typical malay weddings were casual. People usually meet the bride /grooms and their parents to congratulate them . After eating, then rushing to next wedding venue. Probably next time you should experience nikah ( solemnization) ceremony. Only family and close friends invited. So it's more intimate.

Traditionally Malay wedding is mainly to announce to the whole village and relatives that the bride & groom are married. Which is why there's so many people invited. It's time for relatives to meet and catch up. You can come and go at any time, even before the actual wedding ceremony. The cake cutting is more of a modern day integration from western culture, and people are so used to the usual way of coming, meeting the hosts, eat, and go back, regardless of what's happening in front.

In japan most people invited close friends and relatives only right? But in malaysia, some parents even invited their friends to come to the wedding of their child. In other words, the parents' friends dont even know their child but came because they were invited. So cutting cake for malay wedding arent really a big deal, usually only the close family will focus on that. 1000 people or even more than that can come and go anytime, so, thats the reason why the situation was chaotic and got people standing there. But thats not really a big deal unless you go to a high-class wedding where you got an emcee who asked you to sit down etc. But as someone who grew up and has experienced attending malay wedding, the one you went to is pretty common for a regular citizen. Besides for malay muslim traditional wedding, akad nikah is more important than this ceremony. Akad nikah is where you will see everyone focusing on the bride and the groom :) Wedding ceremony was being held to announce people that they are married and to celebrate guests. Hence why people just enjoy eating at the wedding, greet them and give some money.

Kaz,it is not rude in Malaysia to eat first before the event start as in Malaysia, wedding event is huge inviting hundreds and some even 1k of people. If we were to eat at one time,it will be very havoc/busy as compared to Japanese wedding which is more smaller and intimate.Plus usually the wedding event place is not that huge so as people come and go,other people who come in later will have space to sit etc. Same reason why cake cutting event is not highlighted as cake cutting is more for pictures etc and incorporated in wedding events during the modern days, unless you went for high end wedding in hotels etc..Every culture in every country is different so embrace it. 👍👍👍

Acara yg paling penting ialah majlis akad nikah hanya keluarga terdekat sahaja invited. Majlis kenduri dibuat sebagai pengumunan kepada orang awam supaya tidak berlaku fitnah kepada mempelai.

cutting the cake is not an important part of Malay weddings, Kaz. it is just a borrowed ritual originating from Western cultures. it might be important to the bride and her groom, but not so for the guests. In Japan, the invited guests are very close people to the wedding couple, normally small ceremony with limited numbers. In Malaysia, invitation is openly done by the couple, parents, siblings. Even uncles and aunties of the couples normally invite their friends. So not all attendees know the couple personally. When I was in Japan, 30k yen (RM1000) is the minimum you should bring as the wedding gift if you get invited. In Malaysia, you can give money (RM30 onward) or any other presents like electrical /kitchenware/ household appliances.

Hahah I personally will consider the cost for food & goodies per head (which usttotalled up to more than RM10 nowadays). So I usually will give the amount that suit the cost per head because I know how some brides and grooms had to save up just for the reception. But the amount doesn’t matter actually. It’s the thoughts that count I guess. Idk if you guys knew this but in Javanese weddings, those who gave money write their names on the envelope. I was shocked at first because letting yourself known is contrary to the act of sedekah but my mom explained that it’s a normal thing in the Javanese culture. When you know who gives you how much, you’ll know how much you’re expected to give back if that person invites you to their children’s wedding later. Some families even list out who gives how much and keep it for future reference haha. Just wanna share because I find it interesting ✌🏻

Yes i agree that malay wedding is more casual.. everyone want to go to wedding because we want to show love and support to a newly wed. Everyone can go to the wedding even if u not invited officially (of course u need to be someone known by bride n groom or the family) and the pax for wedding is from 500 to 2000 people.. That is why people need to be hurry to eat and say hello to couple then go.. coz they want to give a space to other people to use the table.. Different with japan.. it is more formal and closed. Basicly less than 100 people. (Family and office/schoolmate only) And to show some respect basicly they need to give atleast 30000yen(rm1200) per pax.. this is equivalent to the food and also for door gift. Maybe bcoz of this some japanese dont like to get invited.

for commoners, wedding reception is just a casual celebration where people come and go without much protocols. it will be different for royals or rich people where set protocols and itineraries, sometimes even set color theme for guest .. often at hotels.. but all in all.. wedding reception for commoners are like this one.. casual, light and easy with happy vibes...

Why not giving attention to groom & bride from dining table is common thing that aren’t impolite? Because traditionally.. • Bride & groom always indoors. Whoever wanna pay respects need to enter house and sprinkle aromatic mixed/handshake/say some wishes/offer gifts. • Dining setup traditionally outdoors. So people who are invited aren’t facing groom & bride while eating until a moment groom & bride walk outside to greet people table by table/canopy by canopy. This culture shape common sense among society that whoever wanna pay respects need to face nearly bride & groom. Offered meals just a charity without aiming anything in return from guests like paying attention while eating etc.

The concept of malay wedding is to (1) introduce new family member to the big family and friends (2) feed the guests. Guests come, see the new member (bride or groom) eat and say congrats to the parents and leave. If you go to a wedding, you just help yourself to the buffet and be happy, that is all that the hosts expect from you. Thats why sometimes its not weird for us to attend three to four weddings in one day 🤣

there is actually 2 part of a wedding ceremony. the solemnization or nikah ceremony (wedding ceremony) is usually done with close family and thats the formal part where every part of the ceremony is truly observed. the one here is the wedding reception where its more on food...thats why you are quite surprise. its not rude, just the formal part of the wedding is not at this occasion... its meant for food and talking ...not the ceremony.

I think you should explain to him that for malay muslim the akad nikah( solemization) are the most important. It is the main event. Everybody give full focus on it because it's the religious matter. Wedding celebration like bersanding, cake cutting and all the partieing are not that important. * sorry to say that from what i see most japanese and korean don't understand it because they don't have religion. Many malays also don't understand and give them the wrong info.
