It is calming. It's a slower music; it has an intimate feel and a coziness that can be comforting. Look how often it's contrasted against rainy weather. It also touches on an underlying sadness that permeates everyday life. It acknowledges that sadness and says it's all right. It doesn't judge you for it. I gentle soothes it while validating those feelings without judgement. It also lets you know that you're not alone. You share in this with others out there. You can see that in the comments. Sometimes it's like a group just supporting each other. This world is extremely harsh, hypercompetative, and frequently derogates you for feeling sad or weak or vulnerable when those are normal feelings, especially in response to the pressures of life. Many of these mixes also list themselves as ideal for studying. Young people in a harsh world, cramming for school, hoping it will help them land a remunerative occupation in a world that often makes that very hard might find a lot of comfort in all this. The music also feels good alone. It's okay to be alone, to want to be alone and not socialize every goddamned second. Being an introvert is not always well tolerated, even though we all need the down time. Finally, there's a beauty in the sadness that I think everyone appreciates. Our world tells us to always be happy, our jobs tells us to wear a smile no matter what we feel, and constantly forcing a jolly mood is really exhausting. There is a beauty in sadness, and it can be nice to be there. It's not the same as being depressed. It's just sadness, which passes. This music is all about doing the opposite of what society says to do: slow down, take time, be alone, feel the sadness, find beauty in it, connect with others around all this and support each other without judgement. As for why such young people are feeling nostalgia for stuff they didn't grow up with... Well, I don't know. Maybe if what you said is right about so much culture being so overproduced and watered down these days, then maybe it's not unreasonable that younger people, who can so easily explore the stuff of the past on KZread, might find older stuff more satisfying. They also get to see a kind of carefree vibe in a lot of older stuff that's absent now, and they might wish they could have had that. It sounds like a hell of an indictment against what's been made over the last decade or so. Makes me think of Mark Fisher's theory about "lost futures" in "Capitalist Realism."

Very well said, really agree with your points

The amount of preparation, dedication and time that was put into this video is actually unbelievable, you guys are seeing only the video itself. I've seen the 14000 word intense college-necessary paperwork that has made this what it is today. This has taken him almost 2 months to complete, with that being said, this is probably his best year - music production and something new (education wise) which turned Jack (Props) into the guy you see him as today. Well done man, hope you get a sick grade 🤑

How do you figure there was a 14,000 word college essay??? And where tf can i find it cuz i would love to read it so i can get to know lofi more. Im trying to get into making lofi beats and that’d be unbelievably helpful.

Lofi music is such a great experience. The feeling of a little aesthetic moment being completed by a Lofi song is so incredible.

How on bloody earth does this not have more views??! The work you put into this is incredible. Hats off to you man! I gotta say I really agree with your points. When I found lofi, I thought it as a marriage between the old and the new. I'm quite traditional but I do like some new things here and there, and lofi gives me that. And you nailed it: it helps to slow down in this crazy fast world. A lot of the comments I see are sad people that become happy when listening to it. It symbolizes that peace that this age yearns for.

Nice videos man. The editing is priceless. In my opinion Lofi makes life more aesthetic and slow. After a bad day you can just chill and appreciate the beauty of the world. I personally love listening to lofi when the sun is setting.

music doesn't just spurt out of nowhere, if you look deep enough to how the beats follow a very basic 4/4 rhythm you can say it originated all the way to the beginning of human interpretation of music... Point is, there's no real origination, only interpretation. One artist just managed to make a sound through interpretation and equipment that other people wanted to replicate, thus creating a genre. So In all honesty, I don't believe it originated from the 90s or the 70s, but over a series of centuries jumping from one artist to another until one made a specific sound that everybody liked

Some of this felt like a horror movie. The footage at 2:53 really felt like the beginning shot of a horror movie to me.

I like the interpretation at the end. Makes lots of sense. Lo-Fi is a form of therapy in a world that's gone too fast.

to me, I get a sense of a warm Venetian or Parisian feeling of the old architectural structures that exist and it takes me away from my reality abit or when I'm conversing with friends on discord or in real life, playing board games and having social drinks at each other's houses. Hell we've gone to sleep in the lounge room playing the live stream videos and slept to them. Not just lo fi, but Halo ODST soundtrack (with rain, duh) and Chillwave and some calmer synthwave. Also, we are all 23! Finally me and my girlfriend have fallen asleep to these playlists, it's really fascinating stuff. Honestly in life, I gain a sense of dread. I dread getting older. When you are 18 you are really hyped about getting all these things, a house, a great relationship and a well paying job. Though, once you get close to it, you look back at all of your experiences and begin to honestly miss them. I had a hard time in school, my senior high school years were great though. Had finally started to grow up and become well mannered, all of my school mates were just peaceful, the entire year got a long. When there was a party, everyone from the same year went. After school, it split up a bit but that was okay you still had a large group of friends in which we all did everything together every weekend while also meeting people along the way. One of my mates is in a 5 year relationship with a girl he met at a party he wasn't even invited to. Then you start to notice groups splintering off, some people not getting along, and so fourth. Until eventually you only have 3-4 real friends and the rest are no more than acquaintances. Life starts to tie everybody up. I think Lo Fi massages your brain in which triggers your memories, it slows down your hype to nil. You think a little more about easier times. Easier times where you didn't have to worry about being late to school, because you weren't worried about a paycheck or losing a job for a slight mistake. I'm only 23, but, I want to go reverse time and go back to school. I wouldn't change a thing, I'd just do everything again- the good, the bad, knowing where I'd end up. If you are still in school and hate it, but have a few good friends. Cherish those moments and turn up to school for those moments and don't forget a day. Cos one of my old friends who moved away after school for University, passed away a year and a half ago. Life catches up eventually, you will realise that the people you shared great experiences with will eventually succumb to the reality of nature and life itself as we all must eventually do. This may seem like ranting, but it's what goes on in my mind when I listen to Lo Fi. I think a little bit more, it triggers a soft emotional response I believe. Kind of like a drug that isn't harmful to your body, but, rather healthy.

I’m a teenager and I find myself listening it to lo fi and vaporwave stuff. I think it’s because I’ve never seen this supposedly great time. That’s why I grew up interested in old technology. It’s why I find myself listening to 80s music that my parents like. I want to immerse myself in a simpler time. Nowadays, we just grow up differently.

Nostalgia is inherited via morphic resonance. Young people feel nostalgic, not because they went through such things, but because society holds a collective memory that they tap into.

I'd say it boils down to being ironic.....unironically. In the same way I saw a guy explained current gen z humor. Gen z is so overly saturated by input that anything that isn't funny is funny (to an extent of course). The same goes for the Lo-Fi meta. It's so far removed from mainstream music that that simple fact alone makes it largely appealing. Of course, the aesthetic and the specific melody style of the music probably also does help. But I'd say my previous point is a big driver for it's popularity. PS! After watching your ending, I absolutely agree with that. Good point!

Amazing video. Lo-Fi music has always out my mind in a more refreshing place. A place where I can go to that I can escape and be free from all the stress. A lot of times I catch myself thinking of outer space and sitting in a space ship just looking at the constellations I can’t explain why but whenever I do it’s when I’m listening to this genre and it helps calm me down and sometimes I meditate with Lo-Fi music playing and it’s so relaxing. It puts me in a state of mind that helps me focus on my inner self. Truly great content and this should be shared more often

If I had to have my viewpoint of lo-fi music, it would be that it is a great music genre that has its beauties and its uniqueness that it has to offer is amazing. I can pretty much relate to many of your statements on your viewpoint of lo-fi music. In the end, the way lo-fi music uses its different styles and how people feel makes it appeal to many people who prefer to listen to something more calming and helps them relax and chill.

Like your documentary man like watching it bro i love lofi music what I think lo-fi music is, is meditation music and every body gets stressed depressed and anxiety alot of people suffer from these things I am a music producer songwriter from the UK and I am lofi when everybody is Stressed depressed lofi is this piece & Relaxing chilled and everybody needs a bit of that in there life lol

I think the reasoning for this is that during that time adults now were kids then and well when your a kid life is good. And younger people like myself love it because they werent alive then makeing it about more our own personal utopia of calm, but your conclusion at the end of slowing us down when the world moces to fast I think was perfectly said. I think you miss a huge point. *loneliness* lofi music feels "lonely", so has connected with a sea of lonely people that feels somehow empty or disconnected, alone in their rooms or thoughts. Despite the huge amount of social networks these is one of the loneliest generation and lofi music relate with that feeling. I personally listen lofi lone working in my pc at night drinking coke or coffee.

Can't remember lol

TBH lofi was dead to me about 2016/2017. After that point I really wasn't hearing anything new or interesting. Just really, really formulaic beats. For a while there I couldn't get enough of it! Totally different than anything else coming out in the 2010s. Wun Two, Mujo, Dibiase, etc put out some quality music
