Why is ketchup so hard to pour? - George Zaidan

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/why-is-ketc...
Ever go to pour ketchup on your fries...and nothing comes out? Or the opposite happens, and your plate is suddenly swimming in a sea of red? George Zaidan describes the physics behind this frustrating phenomenon, explaining how ketchup and other non-Newtonian fluids can suddenly transition from solid to liquid and back again.
Lesson by George Zaidan, animation by TOGETHER.

    I remember being curious HOW ketchup got OUT of the bottle, so I faced the open bottle side near my face, so I could see how it got out. However...as said in the vid, ketchup is very hard to squeeze out, and can almost never have a perfect amount squeezed out.... 😐 In this case on my eyes and not my French fries...

    i dont think large factories care about the enviroment that much anyway about the glass or the plastic i prefer plastic as it is easier to pour out ketchup at the amount you want but the thing is that i find ketchup in glass bottle waaaay tastier. Same with coca cola in the glass it tasts better than the metal one or the plastic one , actualy i believe that everything stored in glass is better than plastic

    In Sweden, this is mostly never a problem as our ketchup bottles are almost all plastic. Thus, we can apply force very easily (by squeezing the bottle) and the tiny opening allows for a relatively controlled amount of ketchup to come out just how we like it (most of the time).

  • @TheAMG63driver
    @TheAMG63driver10 жыл бұрын

    I have had great success with a hybrid approach. Tap the bottle opening firmly on two fingers at a 30 degree angle. This not only aligns the tomato cells, but it allows for air displacement in the bottle as well. I have tried this with varying levels of ketchup in the bottle. There is still a percentage error maybe due to brand or age (evaporation) or other environmental factors. When all else fails, the less tedious option may be single serve ketchup packs that are fresh and squeeze out easily. Generally speaking. ... If there is a will, there is a way.

    I work at a paint store, and paint only stays "shaken" for about a week, witch allows it to flow "normally". I also used to work at a stake house, and the ketchup never was thick, but we rotated the stock every other day. I wonder if this has any reliance?

    2:54 you can't squeeze a glass bottle. If you hold the glass bottle upside down at a 45 degree angle and smack the "57" near the shoulder (of a Heinz bottle) it will pour nice and smooth. Alternatively you can insert a knife into the opening while the bottle is inverted and a lovely flow will take place. But, yeah the squeezy bottle is best.
