Butler is such a crafty player, he has such a 90s playstyle. Physical in the paint, reliant on footwork, tenacious defender, takes enough 3s to keep the defence guessing but mainly opts for easy mid ranges and a master at drawing fouls

This man is simply on another level iq wise. He has more career steals than turnovers (so does kawhi) and just makes a lot of good decisions. The jump stops, fakes and pivots are what kept Jordan elite when he got older and less athletic, its only poetic his son has already mastered these skills going into the fall of his career.

I’m so happy for Jimmy Butler. He was not a high Draft pick. He went to the Bulls and developed into one of the best defensive players I. The league. Then the Bulls made the mistake of trading him. Since then he has won on every team he’s been on. And now he’s playing the best basketball of his life. I hope he wins a championship- no one deserves it more.

@Frankincensed level-headed? More like underselling fan. Miami capitalizing on Boston's shortcomings and lethargic play is as much their highlight as it is Boston's reel of shame. I'm tired of NBA fans always taking away from the team that rightfully won making the most of what's in front of them by passing the buck and saying "they didn't win, the other team just lost" its only superstars that are saved from that treatment and I'm glad it's probably going to be 2 play making smart teams in the finals in Miami and Denver instead of the usual LeBron sack riding show that it is in the finals. Finally some decent basketball.

I think part of it is how the playoffs slow down a bit. Jimmy's a gritty midrange player, who can create his own shot. When the games slow down, it suits his style. He's also incredibly well conditioned. When other guys fade, he continues on, or even gets stronger. He's also a very good defensive player; you can't matchup hunt him. Also, as Grant Williams discovered, you don't piss him off, because he's one of the best competitors in the league.

The video did a good job of breaking down his game but I think this post does a better job of actually answering the question of why he upgrades in the playoffs. Like most stars his minutes and shots go up and his conditioning allows him to keep his play at a high level. He also has the clutch gene, he rises to the occasion where others shrink. He isn't afraid of the spotlight, he lives for it.

He had seasons with the Bulls where he shot above 35% on more than 3 shots per game. I think that he is not a bad three point shooter at all. Average at least, maybe even pretty good , I just think that he does what he is best at and most comfortable to get in the zone with.

"After watching him closely..Jimmy Butler is quietly a basketball genius". Huh, I too just realized that as I've been watching him in these playoffs. He does all the little things so perfect. He's not THAT tall, he seems to have a short wing span, he's not very quick, he's not a great shooter. But he's strong, he has a lot of little tricks, he's super smart and seems to be able to read the floor on O & D perfectly, he's great around the basket, he positions his body very well when taking shots to shield from a block, and he's clutch. I've never seen a player do this much with what would appear on the surface to be very little. Bravo Jimmy Freaking Butler.

Been a long time bulls fan and watched Jimmy's progress since he's been drafted. I learned then that his personal life was like one of those movies and it also showed the way he worked his whole career. Many projected him as a role player for his ceiling and a sub for Luol but boy his hard work really was a breakthrough. I was shocked when he started showing his offensive ability in 2014. Knowing that he has already been a great defender I can't believe a two way player in the bulls since MJ had been born. And like everyone knows what happened with his bulls career I was one of those disappointed with the FO. They didn't bet on Jimmy and let him go. It's just bittersweet as a bulls fan that with each of Jimmy's success it reminded me of the crap bulls FO. But will always be rooting for Jimmy and I believe he deserves a ring.

Boston looked lethargic in comparison to the effort Butler and this Heat team have demonstrated in the first 2 games.

I think that is what is often overlooked in an NBA players' trait called 'motor'. How quick they are to get back into the play or into a sequence. Watch 5:59 where Ben talks about Jimmy missing his mid range jumper and immediately track the miss to put the ball back in. Not many players can do that not necessarily because they don't track the ball well but they aren't relentless enough to go after the miss.

I remember turning my car radio on in 2011 and listening to the sports update that Butler was drafted at 30. The league projected that he would be a solid bench player. He worked on his game every year. Came in as a defensive stopper, worked hard to improve his offense and he was hitting clutch shots and alley-oops that caught people's attention, became an All-Star, a Superstar, and now on verge of becoming a Megastar. He was never a bad teammate, he just knows hard work and when others aren't working hard. Too bad the Bulls, Timberwolves, & 76ers couldn't see that through. Proud of this man. He's the embodiment of hard work over talent. No one in 2011 would've predicted the career Jimmy has had so far.

I've never seen anything like Jimmy Butler. He has been in the league 12 years and before the playoffs started I don't think anyone was arguing he deserved consideration for top 75 all time, never has he been called top 5 in the league or was an All-NBA 1st Teamer. Except 3 of these last 4 years in the playoffs he turns into a top 3-5 player who in moments litterally looks like Michael Jordan out there. Makes me start thinking about all time small forwards like Dantley, English, Worthy, King, Dominique, Mullin , Hill, Pierce ,Carmelo, George, Kawhi etc is it crazy to say in hindsight of Jimmy's career so far with how well rounded he is and a being a leader he could rank over all of these guys by the time he retires?

Nah, it's not crazy. Kawhi is the only one 100% ahead of him at the moment. Dominique and Pierce are good comparisons, too, because each of them spent their careers as easily the best players on their teams, and close to the best in their positions, but were overshadowed by some generational talent so much better that it took all focus off them. Kawhi's injuries unfortunately cut his prime (very) short and so while we know Jimmy probably won't supplant him peak for peak, he has enough ahead of him to draw level in terms of career achievements. Shame we never saw more head-to-heads between the two of them. 76ers versus Raptors was insane. They left it all on the court.

Kawhi 2019 Raptors run is the only more impressive run on paper but was Kawhi in 2019 playing better in the 1st 3rounds compared to Jimmy so far this year? Then KD and Klay got hurt in the Finals so I'm not sure we should rank so strictly based on the fortune of being in better circumstances . Jimmy is doing this without the best circumstances.

And that takes a strong team. You're talking about a team that lost its 2nd best scorer (Herro) and it's 2nd best defender (Oladipo) statistically. well done video. Enjoyed the break downs and slow motion focus ins instead of the usual here's a highlight. I am going with Jimmy Butler is a team player. During the regular season he is getting everyone involved. During the playoffs he takes over because it has to be done. As you were saying he is studying his opponents and is coach Spo. In a series both can focus in on one team instead of a new opponent every night. Plus its a match up thing. Heat went up against two teams they matched up well against. Giannis not being able to hit free throws pretty much ended that series. Knicks wanted to play defense and that's Miami best attribute. Less scoring isn't going to hurt the Heat. I can't believe how much the Celtics have shrunk so far in this series. Once again, Jimmy has played the Celtics 3 out of the last 4 years or so. It just seems like every year but their first round exit. More film, more tenancies, more ways to exploit them.

Jimmy Butler essentially took another route compared to Kawhi Leonard, this is how you conserve in the body and keeping proper conditioning in the season and then exploding in the playoffs like how Paul George ranted earlier in the year

Yea this is how load management should be working. It’s not that you missed games, you’d still play but take it easy. Not in term of playing lazy tho. Just use different gameplan while exploring your opponents. And that way, nobody knows your full capability 😂

Jimmy Butler knows how to create 10-15 foot midrange jumpshots, which is a completely lost art in NBA today. Teams have now equated analytics to mean “only shoot 3s and layups”, but defenses have adapted to prevent 3s and layups, leaving midrange more open than before. Anyone who uses analytics correctly would know that open midrange jumpers are better than hotly contested 3s and layups.

DeMar in Chicago is another player who has taken hold of the midrange. As teams are becoming more analytics focused and defending the perimeter and the paint, the midrange opens up just by the spacing. Jimmy has an ugly looking, flat trajectory shot, but it's good enough for the midrange, and he's maximizing that. Really good to see that.

It’s actually not better than a contested layup percentage wise, surprisingly enough. NBA players are good enough that a shot at the rim even highly contested is still generally a good shot. Analytically the midrange is only good for elite players, and this “death of the midrange” really applies mostly to role players: elite shot creators still use midrange quite a bit.

There are definitely still some good midrange shooters. But ALL NBA guards/forwards should be coached to shoot midrange jumpers if it is WIDE OPEN, and hit them consistently. If you watch the film you’ll see the Celtics (and many teams) pass these up regularly.
