Why Is It Hard To Find An Engineering Job?

Engineering is competitive. Some people seem to find work easily, while others seem to struggle. Here are some thoughts on why that is, and what you can do about it!

    My software year I couldn’t get an internship so I started a company (like $20 to register a company) and worked on a personal project the whole summer. That “internship experience” helped me land my next internship the following summer. Best way to get a job is to have hands on experience. Do whatever you have to to get some

    In my experience the people who struggled the most in finding jobs were engineers who didn’t know what they truly wanted to do with their degree, so they apply to any and all positions available but with no motivation. People who knew field they wanted to go in , typically got a job. Best advice. Figure out specifically what you want to do and aim in that direction.

    The attitude part is spot on. Many employers just want to know whether they'll feel secure putting you in front of a customer after a month+, especially considering that our economy is heavily service-based. As far as taking "some" job (not that it's advised in the video), IMHO, I believe graduates should be ready for that too, OR certify under new skills & re-direct - business/finance, web-development, IT, technician jobs... all are better options than being out of a job for a year+. It's brutal out there NGL.

    @@WissamSeif pay is definitely a big one, an entry level position in civil/transportation is relatively low compared to electrical and mechanical. From the public sector perspective the Government (Federal and Provincial) has a number of outstanding projects that need to be completed within a certain timeframe in order for municipalities and regions obtain grant funding, so there is a major push to get these projects finished. Fiscally, whenever there is an economic downturn or recession, the government invests heavily in infrastructure to create jobs, that was also the case last year.

    Just finished watching a six minute long video that taught me so much about how the world works. I find the work ethic part to be most helpful. Honestly never heard anyone put it quite like you did, especially about bringing it up to an employer. Also getting a resume professionally done is a huge time saver - thank you so much! One thing I wish you elaborated on (not that it would make sense for this video) would be the path of taking both internships and education at the same time. How does this work? I only know people who do school for 4 years, with internships over summer vacation.

    A lot of places are interested in free interns. If you are about to graduate within a year it can help to intern at a company for a few months for free and if you perform well they will more than likely hire you. When it comes to engineering, free interns are not normal and usually they get paid like 75% of the normal wage. Also it is important to talk to people in college that know people or even get on campus internships. I am blown away by how many people I meet in classes that have 0 attachments to their resume for future jobs.

    i made 26/hr at my internship over the summer, which was the highest paid internship in my cohort (people graduating the same year as i am) at school. some made as little as 18/hr, for engineering internships. in the US, unpaid internships are illegal, unless they are a direct benefit to the intern as more than just job experience. if the internship is to just get job experience they have to pay you, or they're breaking the law. though, i bet a lot of places try to spin their internships as a direct benefit to get out of paying their workers.

  • @pneumantic6297

    @pneumantic6297

    @@pharynx007 there are things within law that are allowed. An unpaid internship is considered a volunteer op, which is legal in a good amount of states. They are not considered employees. Why someone may want it is if they are getting absolutely 0 bites. Sometimes people take a break for some time after college and are put in an odd spot or the location they are at expects higher standards. Yes you could move but people working like 10 hours a week at a volunteer op shouldn't be shunned. Now if they are exploiting you and making you do heavier loads, thats dangerous on the business because they can't hold a volunteer liable like they can an employee.

    i had an internship last summer, and i'm graduating this year, so unlikely that i'll be getting another internship opportunity (though there is a place that does internship to direct hire that i'll probably be applying for... they *claim* that they only give you an internship if they're going to hire you) i'm pretty sure i could get a job at my internship if they had an opening, i think they liked me well enough, it is just too much out of the way for where i live, so i would definitely have to move, and i don't really want to do that. one more piece of advice i got though, is consider other fields, like you mostly need a STEM undergrad degree to get into a niche field like patent attorney. yeah, it is 2-3 more years of schooling, and 2 more big tests to pass. but it could be good money.

    ehh. i have friends who are honestly very unskilled (they cant program, work with cad bad and etc.), but they landed the same jobs that we together applied for multiple times even though they lacked more skills, i dont know why. Good for them, but damn i am angry at this corperate structure. Like what else one must do, dance like a jester to be a good peasent? My whole life i study, learn knowledge in my field, even through other means because of interest, but no, it cant just be straight up like that, they need to play with your feelings.

  • @pharynx007

    @pharynx007

    Жыл бұрын

    i'm yet to graduate, but i will be shortly. from what i've seen/heard, if you aren't going to go for your PE, it is largely a waste to be an EIT. but also, at least for mechanical engineers, it is less needed generally. if you're working for the government, they want you to be an EIT at least. and if you're going to start your own business, it would be advised to be a PE. i will be getting it, because i don't want my options curtailed. also, it may be worth looking into different state requirements for maintaining licensure. i know some states require like 30 hours a year of continuing education to maintain it, others do not. i'm lucky the state i'm in does not require it, so i can maintain it indefinitely here, and transfer it to any state i need if i move.

    what jobs and employment opportunities can you explore with a mechanical engineering degree?

  • @pharynx007

    @pharynx007

    Жыл бұрын

    i'm about to graduate as a mechanical engineer, in the US, there are three different professional engineering certificates you can get, you can also go into law and be a patent attorney, but most jobs don't require professional licensure. mechanical engineering has one of the broadest scopes available for engineers, for types of jobs you could get into. from construction, to designing spacecraft. there are a lot of more niche engineering degrees that kind of fall under the mechanical engineer scope, that you could potentially get a job as, without the niche degree. i did a project management internship, which is basically just doing excel and word documents, and finding contractors to do the work. but you could also be directly involved in the manufacturing of parts, or just doing the design for them. so, mechanical engineers i feel, have a vast array of opportunities, but we're also one of the more common engineers, heh.

    Another thing I really wanted to add because I think you have a great crowd and I love watching your videos, but seriously I went to university was taught thermodynamics and measurements & instrumentation… learn that professors are horrible don’t teach at all literally didn’t learn had to be up all night and took an online class next semester and realized that professors who teach online are better off due to fact that even if you get bad professor online they still have to meet the criteria of teaching so I think the in person thing isn’t working for some people. Every since Covid. So I did my research because I really don’t see myself going back to get my degree in person I rather go to ASU or alabama where mechanical engineering is taught fully online and it just works better for me do to the fact that I can work full time as well and not be stuck at some dumb university not being taught. It really does suck that we pay all this money and show up to class and the professors show up and just read off PowerPoints and don’t answer question for students and don’t really help you when you ask for help rather than online they have to meet a criteria of providing more material to really teach you.
