    No, the time where Georgia started was in time of Colchis and Diaochis, but then these countries were gone and then there were Lazica and Iberia, country Georgia is known for not being always united, like if how Texas was not dependent to USA that was a case in here too! Provinces like Abkhazia (which is now occupied by Russia) was independent and they have roots with Lazica, and Another Parts of Georgia originated from Iberia, but Lazica and Iberia were connected because they both came pretty much from Colchis

    Ulrik Andersen as far as I know, Spanish Galicia, as well as Portugal, come from "Galia" or "Galo", Spanish for Gaul. This region was inhabited by Celts (Gauls), an its name probably came from that. As for Galicia in Ukraine and Poland, I honestly don't know. It's interesting how in Spanish we use Galicia to refer to Spanish Galicia, but Galitzia to refer to Ukrainian Galicia.

    Bruno Gruneiro -I think galicia in Ukraine was named after the Gallic tribes as well as they were once very widespread even to eastern Europe and Turkey -St Paul's Epistle to the galatians gives testimony to the Gallic tribe of the Galatians who crossed over the Dardanelles in about 200 BC and established a kingdom in Asia Minor (Turkey) St Paul addressed an epistle to them when they had long been part of the Roman Empire.Even in Italy there a placenames that remember the Gauls -e.g. Gallarate near lake Como and Senigallia (which means harbour of the Gauls) on Adriatic coast. All of Italy north of the Rubicon river was known as Gallia prior to Roman conquest in about 200 BC.

I'm Polish and we call your country "Gruzja", (which is pronounced identically to Russian Gruziya but with Polish accent) and it has been this way since the first mention of Georgia in Polish sources. Nobody knows for sure where it exactly came from but it has nothing to do with Soviet occupation and most definitely isn't used as an insult, so *IF* there are Georgians who take offense in that then it's their problem, not the ones' who use those names.

    The word "Gruzia" stayed that way because the words "Georgia" and "George" cannot settle very well with the Russian vocabulary that's why there is no "George" in Russian language instead they have the word "Yuri" which is the Russian version of "George" The word "Gruzia" and "Gruzin" existed for many years and every georgian I know doesn't mind being called "Gruzin" the first time I heard about this issue is in this video the same way Armenians call Georgia "Vrastan" and not "Georgia" because this is how they used to calling it If Georgians really don't want themselves to be called as "Gruzins" then they shouldn't allow other countries to call them "Georgians" either They should be called with their ethnic name which is "Kartphelians" or "Kartphelis" and their country as " Kartphelia" and not "Georgia" this will clear the confusion between their country and the US state with the same name rather than them finding ridiculous reasons to blame Russia for everything

    " no "George" in Russian language instead they have the word "Yuri" which is the Russian version of "George" Actually we have three versions of "George": Georgiy, Yurii and Yegor. All three are descendants of Greek name "Georgios" but they were introduced into Russian in different times and phonetic rules of language had changed during this period, so they have different spelling and pronunciation.

    Because many Russian names have dimininutive form which can be used in informal situations. E.g Ivan - Vanya, Vasiliy - Vasya, Konstantin - Kostya etc. But if you are not so familiar with person or in formal environment, you should use full name. So if he was not my friend but some kind of business partner, I would rather call him Georgiy.

  • @Suite_annamite

    @Suite_annamite

    *It originally came from this Roman superstition that giving an "a" at the end of a name makes it "sound feminine"; and since lands were "nurturing", they are figuratively "mothers". That certainly doesn't apply everywhere, only where English picked up that Roman idea. "Mongolia" is certainly not called that in Mongolian, nor is "India" called that in Hindi; however, "Asia" was a Greek name for anything to its east.* But in other cultures, this idea was already intuitive, even without "a" sounds at the end, native lands are often called "motherlands" if you're referring to it in peace, while "fatherland" is when you're at war.

    I speak Vietnamese, which uses the Russian name for the Republic of Georgia, as well as for Ukraine!

    Russians (and all other Slavs) just use Ukrainian name for Ukraine, which is also just Slavic name for "the borderlands" :-)

    Of course, the names of most Slavic countries are the basically the same in any Slavic language, *but the pronunciation or spelling might change.* *And that includes the Russian spelling for it: "Украина" instead of the native "Україна".* But you would know very well that there is the unending political polemic on what preposition should go before the name of their country: "na Ukrainu" or "v Ukrainu"!

    At the very least, it used to be part of Georgia. But the Abkhazian and Russian Authorities killed all the Georgians there. Now, even if you got it back, you'd need to repopulate it somehow. It would be incredibly difficult. Isn't genocide wonderful?

    If you are feeling like doing more things of this exact style, maybe look into the two bosphorus, (the current one between the marmara sea and the black sea, and the ancient one between the black sea and the sea of azov), or the two iberia's, the iberian peninsula, and the kingdom of Iberia in Georgia, also the two galicia's, the one in North Western Spain, and the one in Eastern Europe, roughly western ukrayne and parts of south eastern Poland.
