    Great review as always - extremely user-oriented and honest right up to budget alternatives. It would be interesting to see a video comparing the steels you have gathered experience with in the past months. We always hear the "scientific" marketing talk about the latest wonder-steels, but it is hard to judge how much performance we really need.

    G'day mate, yep, great point. All one really needs is an acute piece of just about anything and a sharpening stone; mind you I'm so thankful for what I have ........ in whats now considered mid-range. Fair to say, Aaron has touched on this several times over the years, but I'm with ya, a vid in itself on the subject would be a very worthy one ........ and I can imagine the comments going bananas ; ) Cheers Duke.

    I’d actually argue it’s perfect shaped and configured for a self defense/tactical knife as well! Bought one a month or so ago and it really is the perfect knife for all my uses to include hunting, fishing, skinning, and food prep…I’d love to have another in 5-6 inch blade length as well!

  • @gideonstactical

    @gideonstactical

    Ya a larger version would be awesome, the blade shape would be good for self defense but the handle doesn’t give traction points for that in my mind.

  • @SKiiTTLe5

    @SKiiTTLe5

    Жыл бұрын

    @@gideonstactical yeah maybe it’s my hand size/shape but I don’t mind the traction points…maybe not purpose built for tactical usage but most people myself included aren’t expert knife fighters anyway…if pressed into service to ward off a two or four legged attacker, it’s mostly going to be stab and slash type action and the blade is both “pokey and slashy” enough in my estimation…either way it’s incredible how many things he thought of and how well rounded it is…when it was handed to me at me local knife shop it was immediately apparent to me that this was the knife I’d always been looking for but just couldn’t draw up in my head. I don’t know why there aren’t more swooping belly skinner type knives made for all around outdoor and camp chore/food prep usage, they work so well at all those tasks!

    G'day Aaron, I really like these designs, (the Overland in particular), but to be honest, I dont love 'em. To pay for Magnacut I'd be wanting "perfect" for my use and taste; think Gator premo in the size range, or larger like a Joker or Bravo esque convex. For me, I reckon Magnacut is a case of hold out for more designs and ........ the price to come down. Anyway, thanks for the look mate, ..... it is ...... my kinda steel ; ) Cheers Duke.

    I have the okc spl pack knife. The edge was terrible. But i have put a convex edge on it now and it performs very well. Also strapped a tech lock onto the sheath to drop it on the belt and allow for more belt options. So you have to treat it like a mini project.

    OK thoughts Aaron, first you have THE BEST and most honest user reviews - have been subscribed to you for a lonnnnnnng time. OK blade geometry and setup: I use a puukko as my standard and I have the walnut handled Brutalica/Kizlyar combo Samoyed as my perfect trail knife. THIS would be a close competitor, steel is better than mine (N690Co)for corrosion resistance, think mine is quite a bit tougher, but for the use would not matter. LOVE THE ROCKWELL HARDNESS that is like magic in the hand. My handle is going to be much more comfortable, egg shaped puukko standard. THANK YOU for sharing width of handle, but for EDC think TJs would prob be a bit better. Sheath is sub standard, just plain leather vs TJs which is a nice easy one handed Kydex, I really need to get one made for my knife. Think I would prob buy this except for one glaring issue, I MUST HAVE meat hooks for hands because anything less than a 4.4-5 inch handle and I simply cannot use it safely, handle is JUST WAY TOO SMALL :( Hence the Brutalica, which is 4.75". BUT this is VERY VERY close to get me to consider it. God Bless brother, really enjoy your posts!!!!

    Love the blade shape/design (that "modified kitchen knife" shape is awesome for general camp work, although I _DO NOT_ like the Overland model, especially the handle-to-blade geometry)... but it needs to have a 4.25" blade especially for the size of the handle. They're made in Idaho and we don't have stupid knife laws like that here nor have I _ever_ seen anyone who wasn't doing something else illegal/degenerate get in trouble for the length of their knife. Hell a Manix 2 XL is bigger and I can keep it in my pocket.

    I really like that knife. I'd order it in a leather sheath. But I will hardly exchange the warmth of my Roselli hunting knife's curvy birch handle for the plasticky feel of g10. However the blades on the two knives look very similar to me and I have to admit, this ond will be a better slicer than its Finnish counterpart.

    This compared to the Bradford Guardian 3.2 magnacut? More of a sweeping belly on this, negligible depending on your use. An extra half inch of handle, or probably more appropriate to say the 3.2 has part of the handle built into the blade and reduces the cutting edge to 3". Can't go wrong with either, but for $100 less, it's an option some may want to look at.

They’re both very nice edc backup knives imho. The value version is nice as well and more my stride atm because I’m just broke to say the least.

    If magnacut is lower than 62rc its not worth it. The stock of steel is expensive, so wasting it under 62 is just going to be a rip off. If your making a fixed blade over 5-6" then 62 or under may be acceptable. I commend TJ for doing these at 63-64. The spl range is 60-63... So chances are they screw you at the price and give you 60.

    Again pushing the ridiculous priced knife. Very hard to convince me a knife has $200 more fit an finish. As far as the sheath use velcro straps through the cut out. You can make the knife fit anything. Don't understand how a supposed gear man can't figure how to use a sheath. As a outdoorsman and fisherman I see the ontario as a better design. The other knife might be good for skinning but not cleaning fish with its blade design. The Point is way to high. But you keep pushing overpriced gear.

    Sigh, I always appreciate feedback. And if you look at my last video, I used a buck 117 which cost $75. I test and use a plethora of gear from the very inexpensive to the very high end, because there are people in every group looking to know what the capabilities and limitations of the tools are. I don’t give a rip what tool people use, and if price is all that someone is interested in there is a ton of tools out there like the Ontario that will totally fit the bill. But it’s gonna take a lot of work and it’s always going to be rough around the edges. For other people, they want precision refinement, and a perfect set up and customized to their particular needs and preference. The more you use gear the more you dial in exactly what you want. In this scenario in this video, I know for myself I prefer to have consistent grind angles, scales on my handles, that actually lineup, and the sheath that I actually want to use and it’s easy to attach without a bunch of extra apparatus. But that’s just me.
