In Bret's defense: 1) He still feels the physical effects of that kick now. 2) Bret was passionate about Wrestling, worked his entire life in wrestling and to have such a botch end your career is devastating. 3) I think Owen's death also sours his love for wrestling. 4) Montreal screwjob, putting up with Michaels WWF then Hogan/Bischoff in WCW. 5) MONEY. Brett just signed a multi-million dollar deal too. Didnt even see half of it. Why are people surprised hes bitter?

Because it’s been 25 years. Because after that amount of time you have to actively remind yourself about grievances, the mind will otherwise just move on. Brett knew an injury would end his career. Basically every wrestlers career ends that way - and Brett’s career didn’t end in his 20’s. That happens to some people. Brett knew the risks. Goldberg didn’t attack him in the street.

Most of his friends were high on drugs and roids. His career ended because he still wanted to do a hardcore match while suffering a concussion, and still he wanted to do his figure four above a concrete floor, even tho it's already dangerous with protected floor. The screwjob happened because Bret thought he was bigger than what he actually was (given he was a rating sink) Most of the stuff that made Bret bitter are of his own making, he thought he was a big star when he was just keeping the title warm for actual stars. He thought he was too good to just recover from an injury. He played with matches, he got burned and blame it on the matches, the lighter, the fire, but never on himself for wanting to do it and failing.

Bret had the stroke due to a bicycle accident From CBS news website Posted: June 28, 2002 Bret (Hitman) Hart is listed in stable condition in a Calgary hospital after suffering a stroke. The retired pro wrestler reportedly hit a pothole while cycling, flipped over the handlebars, then landed on the back on his head. Medical tests allegedly revealed a stroke on the right side of Hart's brain.

There's also a very strong medical link between concussions and strokes. Having a severe concussion like Bret did can leave you at a high risk of a stroke for several years afterwards. It's possible that without the existing concussion, just hitting his head in a bicycle accident wouldn't have caused a stroke.

Bret retired in January 2000 a few weeks after the Goldberg match. His doctors told him then that his career was almost certainly over. The bicycle accident/stroke was in the summer of 2002 and was possibly connected as there are strong links between concussions and strokes.

I like these guys but the whole “too negative” generality is asinine. No better than: hater! If he feels negative overall… or if we tend to focus on his negative statements - so what? It’s human emotional bias that makes us think we all should be “positive” about everything. If somebody is negative OR positive about anything, I don’t care… I’m going to analyze their individual points and see if each is valid. For the most part, I think most of Bret’s are. …and when Al says: Bret is full of himself for being negative AND he feels bad for Bret …. Al doesn’t get that he’s the one full of himself. You think because Bret is negative in many ways towards wrestling that it means he has a terrible life overall? News flash: lots of us have a negative view of the jobs/career we have/had overall… doesn’t mean our life overall sucks. 🤦🏻‍♂️

In fairness to Bret, everyone wants their career to end on their terms. Someone with Bret's resume up to the point of the Goldberg kick earned the right to end his career whenever he wanted. everyone knows why he's bitter, but he's not the only one that's had bad shite happen to him. No one earns a right to end their wrestling career on their terms, because you never know when it'll end. There have been plenty of people to be permanently disabled because of their time in the ring, that's part of the dangers of the business. Big E had his neck broken and he'll never wrestle again because someone botched a move, he could be bitter if he wanted but it's the opposite, he said that's life and just count your blessings. You can still look at the positive even if bad things happen to you.

It’s just when he’s interviewed, he’s blunt as can be, and some people can’t differentiate that kind of nonchalant straightforward attitude with anger. Not to mention, it’s others who keep asking him the same question, and his answer never changes, and then it gets posted in a 100 articles, so it seems like he’s harping on things. Rather its the documentaries, and journalists who are doing just that by asking him about the same topics over and over again.

Al Snow is being incredibly empathetic. He is pointing out that Bret cannot (for whatever the reason, it doesn't matter) seem to change his negative perspective on the wrestling industry and that's what is continuing to hurt him and put him in an angry, irreconcilable mindset. Droz had a terrible fate pushed onto him and instead of badmouthing and damning Dlo for all of eternity, he understood it was an accident and it was something that, sadly, could've happened to anyone. He, and Bret are just very unfortunate and happened to be a victim of bad luck. What Bret does have control over is how he responds to triggering topics like the WWE and it's his own responsibility to turn those intense emotions into something positive that benefits his livelihood. Yes, he can no longer wrestle, but he could've been a coach, or start a school, or (if he displayed traits characteristic of someone who did not hold things personally and could be professional) work in other aspects pertaining to other ventures in wrestling. Instead, he clung to the dream of always being able to physically wrestle, no matter what, and when a career ending accident happened he, decades later, never was able to learn how to adapt to anything else in life. And I think that's what Mr. Snow recognizes and pity's about him. Some people find a new meaning in life after traumatic events through spirituality, the arts, science, etc. But unfortunately he doesn't seem to have a viewpoint of life outside the ring.

Think of how his career ended. Montreal, the WCW run not going as planned, his brother, other family members & friends dying (only one from attitude era Hart Foundation still alive), his career is ending prematurely and all the health issues that followed the injury (stroke). When you consider all of that being intercontinental champion in the 90s seems pretty insignificant. Everyone deals with things differently. His health issues may play a part on his demeanor now. Who knows? It's been said that he took things very serious. So something that seems inconsequential to someone else could be huge to him. He's accomplished a lot and has a lot to be thankful for but he'd probably trade everything to get the stuff he lost back.

That happens to many wrestlers but he lost a lot of his family that were in wrestling. I think he's upset because he couldn't fix all his family turmoil. Wrestling was life for Bret. I don't recall much negativity towards Russo that sticks out to me. Goldberg just didn't qualify as a professionally trained wrestler in his eyes and the past can't be changed. Gentlemen. Bret Hart is a stroke survivor. So is my 89 year old father so I feel I can speak with some authority on this matter. Stroke survivors tend to fixate on emotional triggers which is why as caregivers and family members we are cautioned not to allow the stroke survivor to become too emotionally high or low as it can lead to physiological and emotional changes that they would have difficulty coping with. My father can regale you with some of the most compelling stories of his life but there are certain subjects you cannot broach with him because he will either become enraged or shut down emotionally to the point where it’s painful to be around him. It’s a variation on depression but one centered around emotions that are too complex for the stroke survivor to process in a healthy, rational way. I’m willing to bet for whatever reason professional wrestling is an emotional trigger for Bret Hart.

It gets me really annoyed that nobody ever takes into account the fact that Bret has actually had a stroke and maybe literally can't move on when it comes to certain things and topics. I don't think wrestling itself is a trigger for Bret as I've heard him talk very positively about some parts of the business and his career, but asking him about Goldberg/the screwjob/WCW are definitely triggers and I wish interviewers would avoid those subjects with him.

His brother's death caused a ton of family strain and drama. He clearly has a *very* complicated relationship with Vince, one that's involved at least a decent amount of manipulation. Nobody ever talks about it, but Al touches around it in this. The injury from the kick that ended his career is a real thing for sure, and an absolutely awful way to go out. BUT... Bret was also at the end of his career. People forget, he wrestled for 22 YEARS. He won just about everything there is to win, sometimes winning them 3 times. He wasn't being used well in WCW, and the company was about 18 months from closing. He wasn't going back to WWE - this was about 3 or 4 years after the Screwjob. He would have retired, maybe come back to do a TNA run in his late 40's or 50's. Again, it was absolutely awful what happened, but it also probably saved him even more anger and resentment in the long run. Basically, trading one Goldberg story for about 30 new Russo, Bischoff, Nash, Michaels, Hunter, etc. wrestling politics stories where all he wanted was respect and the other guys were wasting his immense talent and loyalty.

The Hart/McMahon stuff goes deeper than the Screwjob, and getting punched in the face by an employee (or anyone really) is something that takes a long while to emotionally recover from. Especially for a personality like McMahon, hiring back a physically broken down Bret absolutely made him feel confident, powerful, "generous," etc. I can't see Vince hiring a healthy Bret back or a healthy Bret wanting to ever work with Vince again.

I think the problem is he had to end his career due to other people and not on his own terms. For something that he loved, and something he gave his entire heart and soul and life to, to not have it end on your terms and have it end the way it did must absolutely suck. His brother died in this business due to mistakes or others, he got screwed during the Montreal Screw job, left the company he had his entire career library in to work in WCW, then after a VERY lackluster run there due to Biscoff's incompetence in booking him(Eric even admitted it), he had to end his career due to Goldberg kicking him in the head. Something he still to this day feels the effects of. Imagine living with that as a reminder EVERY SINGLE DAY of your life. And that injury comes with all that stuff I just mentioned which probably swirls around in his head because all of that stuff happened in quick successions one after another career wise.

Russo is wrong about HBK Shawn had personal problems and career injury and still kept him on the payroll In pro sports that nfl player would have been gone for life. Hbk has been wwe for life everyone comes back except for Russo
