i've run up against all these obstacles. the one i am battling now is finding a place listed in Griffith's that seems to have disappeared completely without a trace. looking like that line will remain a mystery forever.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Irish genealogy, particularly with the challenge of locating places listed in Griffith's Valuation. It's not uncommon to encounter such obstacles, as many places have changed names or ceased to exist over time. This can indeed make tracing your lineage feel like solving a complex puzzle. Don't lose hope, though. Sometimes, taking a step back and approaching from a different angle, like exploring neighboring areas or looking into historical maps, can provide new leads. Also, local history groups or forums can be invaluable resources. Even if this line remains a mystery for now, remember, every bit of research adds to your understanding of your family's story. Keep up your dedication, and if you ever have a breakthrough, I'd be thrilled to hear about it!

Some of the burned records from the Four Courts fire have been preserved and are slowly being recovered and made available. Unfortunately I've forgotten the name of the agency doing this recovery work.

you're absolutely right about the challenges in Irish genealogy, especially due to the Four Courts fire. The agency you're referring to is likely the National Archives of Ireland. They've been instrumental in restoring and digitizing many historical records, including those damaged in the fire. These efforts have indeed made some of the previously lost information accessible again. Thanks for pointing out this important aspect of Irish genealogy research!

My Irish is through the name Kelly. Why is it that battles seem to happen around 1921 and 1922? This happened in many countries. The 1890 US census got destroyed to a fire breaking out in a building, and though the fire didn't destroy that particular census the water used did. Can you tell me why a couple would name four of their children the same name even while both were still alive? I found one of my records that did this. I'm confused, that's all. Thanks.

Thanks for your interesting questions! Let's break them down: Irish History in 1921-1922: This period was significant globally, not just in Ireland. After World War I ended in 1918, many countries were undergoing significant changes, leading to conflicts and revolutions. In Ireland's case, this was the time of the Irish War of Independence and the subsequent civil war. 1890 US Census Destruction: You're correct about the fire and the water damage. It was a huge loss for historical and genealogical records. Many genealogists now have to rely on alternative sources from the same era. Naming Children with the Same Name: This is a fascinating part of genealogical research. Historically, some parents would reuse a name if a child passed away young, but you mentioned both were alive. This could be due to various reasons, including family traditions, honoring someone important, or sometimes just personal preference. It's certainly intriguing and adds a unique aspect to family history! Hope this helps!

@@Ancestralfindings Yes, it does. Thank you. My relative that did this also named 2 daughters, alive at the same time, Pheobe. Three of his sons were named William. That 's why I asked.
