@@alexandrosmironis6093 It's not just the weather, it's the sheer empty expanse of territory that an invading army from the west would have to cross and secure just to reach Russia's economic and political centers, which was further compounded during the Soviet era by the inclusion of the similar Belarusian and Ukrainian territories as well as the buffer provided by the satellite states comprising the Warsaw Pact. The sheer logistical strain would leave the invaders highly vulnerable to counteroffensives, encirclement and partisan raids on the dangerously extended or even overextended supply lines.

@@jeremy7372 Depends. To the Mongols it was an advantage when they had an army of solely cavalry and horse-back archers led by a genius general that was capable of uniting all Mongols. Currently, I don't see Mongolia enjoying its geography as much. The only reason it's doing pretty well is natural resources (though take a look at Inner Mongolia). To Russia it wasn't so advantageous when the Mongols invaded, or when the Polish invaded (just saying, but they managed to get to Moscow), or... Russia (the Muscovites) just managed to, over time, defeat other states nearby (like Novgorod) and build an enormous buffer with lands in the West that were pretty easy to invade and thus no one was really that interested in (but they were effective just due to their enormous expanse). They did this mostly through opportunistic alliances and heavy military expansion. In their pursuit of warm water ports they managed to colonise the entirety of Siberia and Central Asia and get relatively easy to defend borders as well till the Soviet period. Some other nations worth mentioning in this regard: Poland; Poland is typically known for its shitty geography, but note that they also were feared like the Russians (when their state was about the same size still) for their cavalry. The only thing that beat the Polish state back then was time + neighbouring states working together to weaken it (a similar thing that happened to Russia during the Cold War till now). There's more to it than just that. If I may correct that rule: being surrounded by relatively strong states, whilst having a flat geography (aka little defensible geography) and little to no natural borders is a dangerous weakness/situation. Ahem, Flanders for example - good geography for trade and during peaceful times has always been rich - has a bad geography from a military point of view (like the Netherlands), with France to the south (which wants to secure its northern border) and Germany to the east (which doesn't really care unless it needs to invade France) and the UK to the west (which also doesn't really care unless it wants to attack France; though only will try to act as an ally) and a central and strategically important position in Europe. Yet small and flat, what could go wrong?

@@watup3494 So is there a way you guys can recover your lands? They did the same for a northern region of Nigeria called Hausa land. The Foulanis who claim ancestry from Edom / Arab overran their lands and disposed them of their rulershhip systems. The problem is these guys are trying to overrun the whole country but they are meeting stiff resistance from we in the south who are more enlightened to their tricks and gimmicks.

I am now working in Iraq, spending 3 weeks in the country. I can tell that Iraqi people are among the nicest, friendliest, most humble people I’ve ever met. They are always eager to help and the hospitality is awesome. The food is incredible and everywhere I go, I’ve been invited for tea, and have a talk, they keep asking where I’m from, when I tell I’m from Hungary, they seems to know, they call it “ magar” which is pretty strange as we hungarians also refers ourselves as “magyar”. This hospitality is unimaginable in western countries. Iraqi people are indeed aware of the issues you described in the video, they have a pretty realistic view on their country and the world around them. I wish hope and a better future for the people of Iraq!

📌 hi I will say this Colonialism has not ended..... it evolved. let me explain. before colonialism " ends " the west chose the leaders of countries to keep their interest in regions take france for example. KZread censoring the site. and take me for example. i am from the middle east and here our " dictators" have been chosen by the west not by us and here they uneducate people Historically , economically and religiously because that's what sustain their rule and my country is rich ,but money is nothing for me and for us muslims in general and here we eat we drink and we sleep ( not me i always study and seek knowledge in all fronts as best as i can and am a aerospace engineer ) even the cattle eat drinks and sleeps. here🇰🇼 courrption is too obvious and we muslims are in phase one and that's " Realization " to be fully aware from politics to history to religion. and every time a Muslim nation rises the west is unsatisfied and want to overthrow the government. Gaddafi,mursi,Yemeni leader Salah , King faisal in the 70s ( he got assassinated) ....etc way a lot i can't go over them all. "the red shield" known as the rothschilds. our muslim lands are the battlefield of the super powers and when you say next time why refugees are in Europe ask yourself what caused them to be there? that's the correct question. Russia is causing the refugee crisis in Europe by bombing the Syrians and helping Assad to kill his people and the refugees are a toy to send them to Turkey and Europe to weaken their economy and make the left wing fight right wing start wars. Russia has an agenda and don't get wrong Russia, china and America/western Europe are fighting for their agenda to who rules who. all of them are trash. now i want to put it in conclusion. " REALIZATION LEADS TO REVALUATION AND REVELATION LEADS TO REVOLUTION " SOMETIMES IT LEADS TO A VERY DIFFERENT R AND THAT'S RADICALIZATION AND THAT HAPPENS WITHOUT BACKBONE. that's why people go far left or far right. because they are weak in character and btw left wing right wing is a toy for the system no matter who wins the system decides everything not the people nor the government. the UN and "human rights " are all based on subjective morality and they can not prove their stand at all. therefore all their intervenes weather it's " humane" or not can't be proven morally and they can't prove that's terrorism is good or bad. what am trying to say is this system is belt on hypocrisy and when Objective moral people start to realize than they will take action and subjectisim will have no answer when the objective moral people start action and they can't say it's " good or bad ". even if objective moral people did wrong the subjective people can't prove it's wrong since it's all subjective. even so atheist can't prove what's good or bad in all topics other than morality. for example, an atheist says to someone you are Bac-kward and that someone says is being Back- ward good or bad ? here they can't really answer. they can't prove being whatever is good or bad. and so on and so on. what am literally saying now will change the world perception and the moral people will take action. it's inevitable. one thing else if they don't have the concept of good or bad of any subject other than morality that means it has no value ( worthless ). for example, asking an atheist is science good or bad ? if he/she did reply with good and bad they can't prove it therefore, it's subjective and has no value at all since they don't have the concept of Good and bad. therefore, all their " facts" ( which are hypothesis not facts ) are worthless if it has no value ( good and bad ). they can't detect which is fact and not if they don't hold on any value and even if they did they can't prove it since it's subjective. We live in a world that ran by subjective people who can't prove their value or the value of anything and can't prove even their subjectivsim and it's value! Yet they have the audacity to tell us what's good or bad and what's valuable and not and what's true and not.

Part of me is wondering whether the UK’s geography is nearly perfect. It is surrounded by water which makes it really easy to defend (just look at the Napoleonic Wars) and also the weather is significantly warmer compared to other places around the same longitude due to the warmer water from the Caribbean. The only problem is… IT NEVER STOPS RAINING!!!

You dont need to have the perfect geaography when you can literally invade other lands and have the befits of other geographies... Also, if you create the borders on potential rival countries you can get to choose their handicaps to be able to control them. So again, you dont need perfect geography, you just need to be shameless and dominate other people. So, UK, UK... A very nice country with great poeple but the cause of so much suffering... The best part is that they wont acknowledge it and will never apologize... And not just arabs have suffered because of them, half of the world could ask for an apology...

It’s easy to defend but if they’re ever was a blockade or embargo the UK doesn’t have the food, or many other resources to sustain itself long.

as an iraqi , watching this documentary is really hurtful as it's very informative about the brutal modern history of our country. i hope this changes in the near future and the iraqi people get a break from wars and economic disasters and finally find some peace.

I miss Iraq did 3 tours there and i miss the people, culture, and food. Growing up in Hawaii I only learned about Iraq and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in school and in the news, it felt surreal to be standing on their banks. The people were friendly and caring which reminded me of the aloha spirit with which I was raised. I was always the favorite of the Sheiks which would make my buddies jealous. Someday I hope to revisit and bring my family and hopefully they will love it like i do.

The US shouldnt have invaded Iraq in 2003 but most of their problems are of their own making. They adopted a Ba'athism which is described as the last true fascist party since the end of the Cold War (they also had close ties to the Axis powers prior to the Allied invasion), they had numerous coups, they heavily damaged their economy going to war with Iran, illegally used chemical weapons against Iran, they failed to invest in infrastructure or their economy and wasted most of their money, allowed their oil industry to stagnate, used chemical weapons on their own people, were able to win a massive settlement when Kuwait stole some oil (winning back many times the amount they would have gotten from selling the oil themselves), wasted that money, and then brought in the largest invasion since WW2 when they annexed Kuwait which knocked their country back to the stone age. Iraq has tons of oil and they've had good trading ties to Asia and the USSR and they have access to the Gulf, but they've squandered much of those benefits mainly thanks to terrible rulers. Even today they have tons of issues because of their support of violent terrorist organizations and by repressing minorities like the Kurds.

@Kens Gold Iran and the government would not a give a chance. The best thing Iraq has is to merge with Turkey in same way how kurds are merged into Iraq. Same with Syria. Iraq was perfect in 60s and 70s before 1979 and Saddam Hussein.

I want to say I can imagine the shit Iraq goes through, but I haven't been through anything even close to similar, so I can't say this. I'm an American who isn't a veteran of a war in the Middle East, so I haven't been in the middle of a war-torn desert. My older brother has, and he did mention how chaotic it was there. We don't hate Iraq, we came in to destroy your evil leader, or at the very least, that's the way I see it. I hope that Iraq can get the help and respect it deserves and that Iraq can live in peace. Nobody deserves to be deprived of everything necessary for their own survival, and especially not having to fight constant wars with people like ISIS who not only kill so many innocent people, but they reinforce racist stereotypes of Middle Eastern people. May peace arrive to Iraq, the people of your country be given what they need, all of the cultures inside befriend one another, and ISIS be forced out of the nation they tried so hard to destroy.

I'm from Afghanistan and I realized that iraq literally suffer from the same pain that we Afghans suffer like long war and us invasion,but God ,iraq suffer way more than us, we in Afghanistan at least are blessed with our land and our landscape in general is really similar to turkey,Iran and Tajikistan like it's extremely mountainous, cold , lot's of Rivers ,and lots of Rivers literally flow from Afghanistan to neighbouring nations and Talibans always have the ability to block them lmao, and also we many habitable places for living and agriculture and thanks to our mountains Afghanistan in general is way harder to invade , and when it comes to weather Afghanistan is literally opposite of iraq, we in Afghanistan suffer from extremely harsh,freezing Cold weather like literally in kabul alone the temperature drops all the way to -24C while in baghdad the temperature reach all the way to 50C which is literally boiling , and at the end I just wish prosperity for both Afghanistan and Iraq , both of those nations suffered alot🇦🇫🇮🇶❤️😢

Suffering will make a person awesome or awful. Its all on how they handle their pain (acceptance or rage).

What happened to them after that was basically the same thing that happened to Germany after their invasions. The amount of water in the middle east has been decreasing for years while the demand for agriculture has skyrocketed. With the possible exception of Turkey and Egypt most of the region has been dealing with rising water/soil salinity, especially as industry demands more water as well and pollutes whats left.

As an Iraqi, I feel very unfortunate that my country is going through this, I especially because it’s one of the wealthiest in terms of natural resources, which if you deeply think about it is probably what brought it this much bad luck, hence the United States. They literally changed the Iraq war bane from Operation Iraqi Liberation to Operation Iraqi Freedom because the first names first letters spelled out OIL.

I have been working in Iraq for nearly three years in research related to humanitarian and development needs and I always had the feeling that Iraq seems doomed to get worse and worse for the people here. This summarises pretty much the key issues why even with a political reform it would be very difficult for Iraq to prosper. And I hate when some people blame Iraqis for their current situation. Next time I will show them this informative video!

We can get the water we need from Turkey We are at their top five importing countries with over 20 billion dollars of annual imports and the majority of foreign investors in real states in Turkey are Iraqis These alone when cut or threatened to cut could result with their total collaboration with our case. The sea port problem could be easily fixed by building a bigger port than Um Qasir and we are building one (Al Faw Grand Port) but the corrupt system the US left us with, Iran interference and Kuwait building a port and won’t let us have ours are not letting this be a smooth process What we are lacking is loyal patriotic people to fix this whole mess up. I won’t deny we are making progress but its so slow I’m afraid we won’t be able to make it to land safe before another disastrous event.

@@aaronsanborn4291 since you opened this blame thread up I want to throw something I read recently here. Is US to blame? Was Saddam Hussein a US puppet? This may seem like a conspiracy theory but you can always fact check every info mentioned. "He was in some senses a US puppet yes. He had ties with the CIA coming from the time that Abdel Karim Qasim was overthrown in 1963, it was well known that Saddam Hussein was indeed a puppet of the US similar to Manuel Noriega. When the West didn’t like Qasim because Qasim was too close to the USSR and too close to communists within his own country up to the point that he was believed to be on the side of the USSR, along with the fact that he wanted Iraqs oil to be distributed among the populace of Iraq. The Americans and the former occupiers of Iraq (the British) thought this was unacceptable. So they all colluded together to overthrow Qasim and Qasim ended with bullets in his body. It has been believed that Saddam Hussein was on their payroll since 1959 when the Iraqi monarchy was overthrown and Qasim came to power. Like Noriega, Saddam was in power to subvert the cause of the Arabs be it the struggle against Israel or later on when he came to power, the prevention of union with Syria and then later on war with Iran. Saddam rejected Arab nationalism and Pan-Arab thought which were the ideals of the Baath Party in favour of Iraqi Nationalism and later Islamism. Saddam in many ways did exactly what the West wanted him to do and everything he did never advanced the cause of the Arabs in any way but in fact did the opposite whether it be the war with Iran in order to destroy the Iranian revolution in its cradle, the funding of the Muslim Brotherhood against Hafez al-Assad in the 80s or when he hired Abu Nidal to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to the UK in the hopes that Israel would blame the PLO without evidence as they did in order to attack Lebanon just so that Hafez al-Assad would either lose or alternatively save his own troops by not coming to the aid of the PLO in 1982. Saddam also persecuted people the US didn’t like for example the Iraqi Communist Party, elements of the Baath Party that agreed with Hafez al-Assad (i.e. the Arab Nationalist and Pan-Arabist groups), those who supported and even wanted to replicate the Iranian revolution in Iraq, Kurdish Nationalists etc. Saddams major flaw however was the Palestinian issue. He was a genuine believer in the Palestinian issue as were a lot of the Arab leaders at that time. No matter the fact that he was both a huge Anglophile and on the payroll of the Americans, he was still someone who would not submit to being anything but a supporter of the Palestinians. He also lost the war with Iran and the USSR was on the verge of collapse, meant he was no longer needed. Then there was also the fact that he had the most powerful Arab army at the time, which could in many ways subvert US interests in the region if he was left to do what he wanted meant that he had to go. Alongside this, when it comes to Bush, I don’t think he ever forgave Saddam for nearly assassinating his mother. Bush I think wanted him to suffer for that particular attack and was not only willing to go to war for oil as is most commonly mentioned but also revenge for this incident."

This is sad, knowing that historically, Baghdad was a cultural center for the spread of vast amounts of knowledge, innovation, and information during the Islamic Golden Age.

@@iam3336 I wouldn't call it the Islamic Golden Age as it was a Golden Age in spite of Islam not because of it. The Arab rulers of the Medieval period were in fact not religious fanatics as the wahabites make them out to be, but very pragmatic and open-mined. See their palaces in Jordan for example; full of wall painting depicting erotic women, wine drinking and other unislamic stuff. They even banned Christians and Jews from converting to Islam in order to gain more tax. There were three prerequisites the Golden Age was build upon: 1. The Arabs conquered places that were already centers of learning for centuries or even millenia like Mesopotamia, Egypt, Andalusia. 2. They conquered Persia and persified their culture, leveling up their culture and connecting the Graeco-Roman and Persian world. Thus the dream of Alexander became finally true. The possibilities of exchange between these two highly advanced cultures who previously were enemies prooved very fruitful. 3. The regions the Golden Age eminated from was religiously and philosophically diverse. Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism as well as Neo-Platonism were still prevelant in these regions. Muslims were only the largest minority. Because of the diversity no one religious authority could supress philosophy and the critique of religion which is the root of all critique and thus of all knowledge. In fact where Islam was the only religion there was no learning. No scientific or philosophical discovery was ever made in Mekka or Medina. While Europe declined with spread of Christianity as the one and only faith and rose again by criticising religion again, the Islamic world rose by criticising religion and declined by becoming more religious ever since.

Personally I think Iraq might have a good future as long as it can remain stable and keeps good relationships with the west. Its geographical location in terms of geopolitical strategies/interests will attract western investors to keep it stable and healthy and strong. Personally I think Iraq might become the new South Korea. Just my opinion, I have no solid sources to back up my claim. Wish you guys the best whatever happens though.

It is true that the situation was very bad, but now it is much better. We live a life that is not ideal, but it is not miserable either. Nations in such situations are typically ending up fighting their neighbours to remedy the problem. For example I live in a province we conquered from Denmark about 400 years ago. We are pretty buddy buddy now but there we are.

They do have a tough situation but Iran is in an even worse position since they have more ethnic groups and more religious minorities and an equal reliance on oil and little water but they have a larger population and fewer allies and dont try and steal everyone else's oil and dont collapse into civil war over and over.

I would say this is a brutal example of "luck of the draw". But it is also British border drawing at its finest, yet again.

As an iranian (Persian) i did know all of this. Iraq need a powerful regime build by their young men. Curruption is the main problem which can see in our country too. We deserve a better situation as the first civilizations.

I hope to visit Iraq someday. I collect money for travel since 2021, but I am still far away from the goal. I am an university student; my academic interest is focused on the history and culture of Iraq, so it hurts me to see the suffering of the country and its people. 11 Steps to fix Iraq 1-Declaring that Iraq is not an arab nation , Iraq is an Iraqi nation with a majority arab population , we can’t say that Iraq is an arab nation yet expect all the non-arab minorities to be loyal to the country , Iraq is a nation for Iraqis no matter arabs,kurds,turkmen,Assyrian...etc 2-Abolish religious jurisdictions by imposing a secular constitution based on freedom of speech ,thought and religion, Iraq is not a Muslim nation ,Iraq has a Muslim majority ,we can’t say that we are a Muslim nations yet expect other religious minorities to be loyal to the country , all Iraqis are equal under the constitution no matter what religion you follow 3-Elect a technocrat government for a transitional period of 5 years(can be renewable)to fix economy , health system , education and infrastructure with no political gains or purposes what so ever 4-Replace parliamentary system with a presidential one so that except MP’s fighting over to compose a government the president will be elected by the true voice of the people 5-Issue a Supreme Court order that all militiamen (including Kurdish , Sunni, Christian ,Yezidi...etc) must surrender their weapons to the government otherwise they will be tried for treason and terrorism 6-Ban government and parliament officials from having any other citizenship than the Iraqi one as having another citizenship may lead to a conflict of interest 7-The PMU’s main goal was to fight ISIS, as the main goal is achieved we are thankful for their service , the PMU should be abolished and members will be integrated back into the society through government rehabilitation programs 8-Issue a bill stating the right of return for Iraqi and Kurdish Jews as many of them were wrongfully accused of treason and oppressed and they can enjoy their full iraqi citizenships back 9-Decrease diplomatic relations with countries that were hostile to our nation such as Iran and the US, Saudi Arabia etc. The iraqi people are not looking for war , the people’s main desire is to rebuild their nation if you have a conflict we are not interested to be a part of it and we’d appreciate you if you stop interfering in our internal affairs. Essentially become isolationists until full restoration. 10-In our new Iraq , People rule themselves so federalism will be the main ideology as each and every governorate will rule itself with minimum interference from the federal government such as creating local police forces , local courts ...etc , except Baghdad will be a federal district ruled by the federal government 11-The flag of Iraq is a banner that should represent each and every iraqi person , a new flag shall be imposed with no ethnic or religious symbolism , we should take pride in our Mesopotamian heritage

I have a friend who went to my university in Ohio. He was from Kurdistan, or northern iraq. He was more American than anyone I know in outlook, just a freedom loving joy, loving dude. He loved lifting weights and talking about diets. He went back to Iraq and I haven't been able to reach him. Karwan you're a dear friend. I hope you are having the happy life you wanted!

Baghdad was a kurdish city. Bagdad in Kurdish means land of lords. Bags were lords and my family are Bags and many Kurds! If you search in Arabic there is no meaning for Bagdad and just says online city of peace which should be مدینە السلام(madina alsalam) so why don't they say madina alsalam? Because Bag dad are both Kurdish words again! Arabs, Pars/fars and Mongols/Turks stole our land, history and language.They stole everything from us Sumerians/Kurds for over a 1000 years with the help of some western countries like Britian and France! Kerbela also was a kurdish city Ker=donkey lol Kurds used donkeys to move goods around and one time the donkeys got sick and became problem so they named the place ker=donkey bela=problem. Ker is bela! Donkey is problem! Get it Kurds?Wake up please. Kerkuk anyone? Ker+kuk. There is a story behind every city name! The Arabs came up from Arabia and took our land!

Iraqi here. You video perfectly summarizes what's wrong with our bit of the planet. Well done. We have and will always be at war with eachother and with everyone around us, this is a fact we have learned to come to grips with and it will only get worse with population overgrowth, the scarcity of water and the creeping desertification. I suspect a new war or even a civil war to happen before the decade's end. One sort of gripe I have with your vid is that I can't show it to my friends and family because it doesn't have Arabic translation :( Edit: I forgot to blame Capitalism as the root cause of this, alongside colonialism they go and in hand in destroying us.

Even though all those allied countries are made to stop such an event, blocking the Strait isn't something impossible, especially when Iran has the political and militaristic might to do something exactly that.

As an Iraqi no matter how I look at my country I always think it's doomed However in my heart I believe Iraq will return to its glorious days. I know I won't be there to see that day not even my grandsons will, but it still gives a good feeling in the future

I love how a 2006 report from the US caused Saddam Hussein, who was overthrown by the US in 2003, to construct Badush Dam in 1988 and suspend construction in 1991 due to US sanctions If you know the history of the area, you'd know US encouraged the Iran-Iraq War as response to 1979's Iranian Revolution

Not quite, if I recall. The US supported Iraq since the latter feared the Iranian Revolution; the US didn't encourage it. US support came BECAUSE of the war to combat Soviet influence.

Absolutely not. Iran's revolution, the destruction of the imperial army and mass murdering of experienced officers had put Iran in a weak state. Also, the revolution was inspiring Iraqi Shias to also revolt too. These reasons were more than enough for Saddam to attack Iran.

To make a video on the seven nations and the Iroquois confederacy and the history of the French and Indian war, and our influence in it as the Mohawk tribe, as well as our influence during the revolutionary war, and the aid in the creation of the United States democracy, and how the US adopted it and then what happened to us afterwards no I’m not talking about the natives out west I’m talking about the natives towards the east we are known as the keepers of the East the gate keepers. There are seven tribes, and we have influenced and have endured quite a bit during the founding of this country, i’d like to see and hear what kind of intensive research you could find on our ancestral story not a lot of people know who we are, and how heavily impacted we have become I’d like to see how you were able to tell our story 🥰

Just imagine how stressful it is to be a leader of Iraq. Your economy can crash at any time if the oil price crash, your access to the outside region is easily blocked, no exotic resources, most of your big city is in danger of being wiped by a flood if a single dam is breached, no rain no water, and hundreds of your unsatisfied citizens wants you dead. Is there even a way to control Iraq without being a dictator? I guess if some countries are willing to continuously inject Iraq's economy to stabilize it.

No the fact is there are too many problems to address and wasting time on addressing the issues of congress and senates on top of the nation’s issue guarantees failure perpetually which could only be kept away by selling out the country piecemeal and taking loans to address today’s problems that will remain tomorrow’s problems just to keep them at bay not solve them. And problems that are more likely to get worse than better if having government of concensus is more important than solutions.

Don't forget about the religious and ethnic tensions. A very smart dictator is indeed probably the easiest way to keep the country stable, but even that wouldn't look pretty. For comparison, look at Tito, who was the dictator of Yugoslavia (which fell apart in an extremely bloody conflict after his death). On the long term... I don't know man. They tried enforcing democracy and that doesn't seem very effective. Perhaps the only way to actually make things work is if the country falls apart into multiple states.

The thing that you don't know is Iraq wasn't have any problem about religion, I am Shia from a Sunni father and Shia mother, Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrian Christians, Sabians and Azidis used to live peacefully just like now because after 2017 there was no war and no conflict only between Saudi, Iran and the USA trying to control the country by their allies inside Iraq, all Iraqi parts don't ever want to divided! except of Kurdistan, Mosul, in the North and Basrah in the south all of them people want Baghdad to rule, because any of them will be surrounded by only dessert, Kurdistan it's impossible to be independent because Turkey, Iran and Baghdad never accept and they will be totally close between the mountains, beside that only Iraqi Kurds between Kurds at Iran or Turkey or Syria have all their rights because their language is official and all Iraqis should learn it, their language written at Id, Passport and all official papers by government and many things beside that, Iraq is doing good actually and it was beautiful place before the Gulf war

The US, despite their faults and their terrible reasons for invading Iraq, did invest billions into the country trying to rebuild infrastructure and they heavily rebuilt and updated their oil drills, refineries, and other infrastructure relating to the oil industry so Iraq could stand on its own two feet and sell oil to Asia. The US government also gave out tons of micro investments, even giving military units a budget to hand out small $1000 development investments so families and individuals could buy tools to update their farms and small businesses (which doesnt sound like much but the average Iraq makes around $4000 a year so that's a small but very useful investment).

As an Iraqi this is just heartbreaking honestly. Its true tho.

Merger with Syria is the best solution for this geography problem. The question is "will the west allow it?". A larger country can resist the west and occupiers/oil grabbers much better. Biggest enemy is the sectarianism among the people themselves ....they have to overcome that first. That's the big struggle.

There is a funny editor error at 16:51. The narrator is saying "mining this area" when he is talking about sea mines to block ships but the editor thinks that he is talking about mining for minerals, hence the pick-axe icon.

my best friend from the age of 7 to 10 was a girl that had to run from iraq to spain because of the war, hearing about what is happening in this country really hurts (sorry for the bad english)

This has genuinely been one of the most informative and balanced videos about Iraq's unique and difficult challenges that I've seen, thank you for sharing with us. Iraq has such an incredibly rich and old history, that it is sorry to see the country stuck in this impossible situation brought about by international political bullying and poor diplomacy, and difficult internal struggles.

Iraq have shown to be very hostile and belligerent, and most of it is caused by extreme islamic doctrine. So Iraq's main problem fundamentally boils down to Islam.

I always ignore and deny the problems of Iraq because I thought they just want war all the time and had different beliefs, but this video definitely gave me better understanding of the situation and felt bad and sorry for misjudging the current problem. Hopefully, things can be more peaceful in those countries where every odds is against them. I also live in a poor country so to speak, but our situation is nowhere near as worse.

most of iraqs problems started with the colonization of the Middle East by western liberalism. The US invasion was just the tipping point

A further note about water security in Iraq: my area of study was Diyala Province and the river basin. What I saw there, both firsthand and during research, was how water affects politics. Diyala borders Iran, and the Iranians are considered pretty dire enemies by much of the people there (not all, some do have cross-border family ties). But Diyala is largely rural, and mostly watered by the rivers in the Diyala River basin, which flows into the Tigris River. Nearly all the water in Diyala originates in the Zagros Mountains in Iran, and Iran has been busily building dams across these tribuatries. The farms in Diyala suffered greatly following the 2003 invasion and following population shifts. The region was hit by drought around 2006, compounding the problems. Once the breadbasket of Iraq famed for it's citrus crops, agriculturaly production ground to a halt. This brought a lot of desperate young men into the insurgency, and of course Tehran also took opportunity from the chaos to further encroach politically. Long story short-- following Baghdad's utter inability to manage the shared-water sources many in Diyala began to turn to Iran and negotiate/dialogue directly with power brokers in Tehran, further undercutting the influence of Baghdad, despite the historic angst about Iran. Years later NASA data showed the effects of this drought as the precursor to the Syrian civil war where much the same problem happened: agricultural collapse due to drought brought about population shifts and a lot of unemployed young men without futures seeking work, at a time of political instability. A recipe for disaster. Unfortuntaly I have not kept up with Iraq or Diyala and do not know the situation today.

Wow, this was an exceptional video. Thank you for sharing. The people and culture of Iraq is beautiful and I hope their situation will improve soon.

Met an asylum seeker here in the UK staying at a hotel i used to work at. He was very smart and very nice to talk to. He told me about many of the problems he faced back in Iraq and i felt bad for him. I did feel it was bad he came here illegally as he told me about coming here on a boat and claiming asylum when he got here, but i felt he would eventually contribute to our country well as he was well educated, kind and sociable. He was unfortunately picky with potential jobs, despite me trying to help him. It seems he wanted our government to pay for him for at least a while. I even urged him to get a job at the hotel since we had jobs going, but he didn't consider the offer. It's a shame that he felt the need to come here. More and more, it seems like countries around the world are becoming doomed, and their people suffering. After speaking with him, it opened my eyes to the human side of economic migrants and their struggles back home. I still think we need to stop them coming illegally, but i completely understand their motivation and how many are skilled and nice people. It does make me question though, what will happen if everyone leaves these failing countries? Will others take the opportunity to seize the land? A failing country won't be able to defend itself as well, and a war between neighbouring countries could be horrific.

Education and communication is key... its sad and dangerous in the context of all nations to see so many depressed and left in the dark humans

I do not see how a dam downstream could withstand the catastrophic failure of the dam upstream. It could be used to relieve pressure on the upstream dam by allowing the reservoir behind the up- stream dam to be lowered. But that would necessitate the relocation of the people between the dams for an additional reservoir.

Watching this video as an Iraqi makes it even more horrifying , unfotunately I can't argue with anything mentioned in the video because this country is dying for real as we its people can clearly see
