One of their games was against FCS, but they were the 2nd ranked in the FCS, and this year the FCS has dominated FBS teams with teams like Sac State whooping Colorado State, and Utah State losing big to Weber State. The FCS teams that constantly beat the FBS teams need to be moved to the Pac12 when they lose a few teams next year. Sac State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Weber State, Montana and Montana State should be in the FBS anyway.

well it's not exactly hard to have a guy catch their own punt. you can have your guys wait even like 1-2 seconds before running and get them to catch their own punt. punters can punt the ball so high, you or i could catch their punts. not taking away from your point, just saying that's not always the case. you can catch your own punt easily by just having the punter punt it high. thats how some of those punts that land out of the air at the 1 yard line will get a bounce and not go towards the end zone. the punt the ball angled so that it is going end over end, and also punt it very high too. they can put the ball so high some pro punters can full strength punt the ball like 20 yards. that's why some don't do coffin corner kicks. they just kick it straight, high, and end over end and hope for a good bounce
@carsonsiemons12

@@GeoJesse yes, but as a punter it's better to coffin corner it because even if you are punting Aussie style it can roll forward when it hits the ground. I mean I watch a lot of football and at the NFL and College level it's not often that the punt is caught in air.

When a team has a good defense and struggling offense... An elite punter can massively help a team. In 2017 Tom Herman was in his first year at Texas following a bad season that got Charlie Strong fired. Their offense was super inconsistent but the defense was decent. Michael Dickson was their punter and I watched all season as that dude completely carried that team. They went 7-6 that year but I guaruntee if they had even an pretty good punter... They win no more than 4-5 games. That offense would go ice cold sometimes and Dickson was totally flip the field position and force the other team to always have to drive 70-90 yards on every possession no matter where Texas kicked from. It helped their defense soooo much and absolutely saved their offense from constantly having to start drives from their own redzone. That was not a 7 win team... It was a sub 500 team with the best punter in the country.

really cool take, somethign to consider though: it is possible that the reason the offense averages only 232 yards per game (considered low) might be because their offensive drives have less opportunity to reach a high number due to the success of taylors punts. So while taylor is the reason for this i wouldnt say its "taylor bailing out a poor offense" as much as it is "taylor putting his offense in such a high quality position that they are not required to do long drives"

I´m pretty sure that´s nonsense, because why would you want to give away the chance for a touchdown / field goal (6 / 3 points respectively) only to have your defense make the stop to THEN still get the points? well it's not exactly hard to have a guy catch their own punt. you can have your guys wait even like 1-2 seconds before running and get them to catch their own punt. punters can punt the ball so high, you or i could catch their punts. not taking away from your point, just saying that's not always the case. you can catch your own punt easily by just having the punter punt it high. thats how some of those punts that land out of the air at the 1 yard line will get a bounce and not go towards the end zone. the punt the ball angled so that it is going end over end, and also punt it very high too. they can put the ball so high some pro punters can full strength punt the ball like 20 yards. that's why some don't do coffin corner kicks. they just kick it straight, high, and end over end and hope for a good bounce

He had 0 punts inside the 20 against Michigan and you guys were hyping this dude up as heisman and saying he could be the reason Iowa beats Michigan. You guys are not different or have some advanced knowledge of football you’re just really really dumb. Talking about heisman for a punter especially one who couldn’t pin a team inside their 20 in 5 tries 😂
I recently graduated from Iowa state and having to watch Taylor put us on the one yard line or close to consistently is the most annoying thing. People often forget in the 2021 season he pinned the cyclones behind the 20 consistently being one of the first games I remember Iowa state having 450 some yard of offense and still losing to Iowa who had only 100 yards of offense. It’s because of Tory that game was 27-17 Iowa win
I remember watching some random Iowa highlight earlier this year and being weirdly impressed by this guy. Could have a legit NFL future.
Amazing breakdown of this topic- keep it up!
I believe I remember seeing a stat that when Iowa punt 6 or more times they have a record of 6-1. Im pretty sure this was before Michigan so it’s 6-2. Now but considering that stat line by all logic should be reversed is crazy in its self.
I was at the Rutgers game and when Tory got his punt towards the end of the game people were shouting MVP and as a defiantly unbiased Iowa fan I think he should win the Heisman

I'm from the U.K, new to football. Been watching the NFL this season regularly and playing old ps2 nfl games, madden 05, and espn nfl 2k4 (amazing game). Maybe because I've fresh eyes on the sport. But I recognized importance of punts pretty sharply. Mostly cause I messed up my punts in madden 05 when I started playing it, so opposition immediately had great field position.
If Dennis Eckersley can win 1992 MLB American League Cy Young and MVP awards (as have a few other closers) than Tory should have Heisman consideration and/or the win. I love when game-changing players at improbable positions upset the norms and make us rethink the sport, how and what we value and award. Great video! I wish they (the heisman voters) would take a broader view than "the Qb of the one of the top 5 teams" for consideration. I know there have been a few non QBs in semi recent history but yeah...this punter is doing some special things. Not sure if it's heisman level but he deserves more recognition than just special team awards
Good shit here, can’t wait to see where he goes in the draft. Really hope my ravens can pick him up if he’s eligible
Field position is everything !
Punters don’t directly create or eliminate scoring. They give you a better chance at doing one or the other, but their actions can be negated every time with a poor performance by the people who are on the field more than 10 plays a game, like a punter. If your punter is your game changer, something is wrong
This is awesome! I would hav enever known if not seeing this on my algorithm page
This'd be incredible if he keeps it up the whole season and is talked about at the end of the year.
He will be a stud at the next level.
Great breakdown
was gonna say most of the punters stats come from the field possession battle more so than just a punter's leg typically then I watch hommie pretty much reverse the field with 60-65 yard punts consistently and tear drop in some shorter ones with backspin... guys got talent that's for sure and may just be Iowa's most potent weapon given the arguments you've laid out, I don't watch too much college ball so I'll take your word on it. Would be kinnda cool to see a punter take the Heisman put I just can't see it happening without Iowa like getting into the BCS based almost entirely off of his foot as their wins seemingly have been so far.
@Isaac Punts Idk if you have ever heard of a punter from Nebraska Alex Henery(2010 was his senior year), but he was a dominating force as a Punter and Place Kicker. He averaged 43.2 years per punt, placed 26 of his punts inside the 20, and had 17 punts go over 50 yards. His Kicking Skills were even better than his punting skills. He made 68 of 76 field goals and made 193 of 194 PATs. That game him a combined accuracy of 96.7% and a field goal accuracy percentage of 89.5%. His senior year was also the third season he scored over 100 points (career total 397). What I am trying to say is, if he didn’t get any votes, this guy definitely won’t.

really cool take, somethign to consider though: it is possible that the reason the offense averages only 232 yards per game (considered low) might be because their offensive drives have less opportunity to reach a high number due to the success of taylors punts. So while taylor is the reason for this i wouldnt say its "taylor bailing out a poor offense" as much as it is "taylor putting his offense in such a high quality position that they are not required to do long drives"
@xxTroller1xx

I´m pretty sure that´s nonsense, because why would you want to give away the chance for a touchdown / field goal (6 / 3 points respectively) only to have your defense make the stop to THEN still get the points? Also having the ball in your position means having control of the game... So they may be more relaxed, but if the offense is struggling because of that, then fuck idk...

@@xxTroller1xx im just saying that when he punts hes getting it so close to the opponents side that upon another turnover it would be more likely to be closer to the endzone because of the punter. Take a look at another punter in the Big Ten. Bryce Baringer at MSU is launching punts weekly at an average of 53.3! Sadly, we have one of the worst defenses and a mediocre offense.
