Why Iowa Making The College Football Playoff In 2024 Is Very Realistic

Спорт

Can Iowa Football Reach The 12-team College Football Playoff? Yes, and I think Iowa making the college football playoff in 2024 is very realistic. Why? Because their schedule is one of the easiest in the Big Ten as the Hawkeyes avoid the Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, and Penn State Nittany Lions, and they are Top 10 in returning production, bringing back an offensive line that is ready to improve and a defense that was all-time great last season. Linebackers Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson will lead a defense where 8 out of 11 starters are seniors or graduates, and valuable experience will help Iowa become more clutch in close games and dominant. This will be one of Kirk Ferentz's best seasons in his tenure with Iowa Football. We talk about all of this and more in this episode of College Football with Sam. Phil Steele is predicting that Iowa will reach the 12-team CFP. He has them ranked 11th in his projected final year standings. Despite winning several close games last year (which is typically a red flag in Phil Steele's analytics), 4 out of his 9 sets of power rankings are calling for the Hawkeyes to win double digit games. As we know, power rankings love dominance, which means they typically underestimate clutch teams like Mark Dantonio's Michigan State teams or Kalen DeBoer's Washington teams.

    @collegefootballwithsam I guess his analytics don't take strength of schedule into account? Assuming iowa loses to ohio, there's a good chance they won't have a single win against a ranked opponent. That's bordering on liberty territory. Granted most of their wins would be against P4 teams. At 11, I'd assume they finish 10-2 with loses to ohio and likely either Nebraska or Wisconsin. How can u rank a team at 11 without a single ranked win when almost everyone behind them will likely have at least one and be within 1 or 2 wins of them overall? I just don't see it. I'd rank a 10-2 team without any ranked wins behind 9-3 teams with some and possibly behind an 8-4 team if they had a much harder schedule and say 3 or 4 wins against ranked opponents.

    Iowa's offense needs to be alot more explosive then it was last year. That would be a pretty gosh darn good season if the Hawks earned a spot in the 12 team playoff. I would prefer the Hawkeyes played for the National Championship. But one step at a time.🏈 they need to have a more explosive offense to compliment the defense. And they need a quarterback that will throw the ball down the field and a running back that can pick up 6 or 7 yards a carry. To take the pressure off of the quarterback. Go Hawks🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈

    They have the RB’s on the team now. They need a relevant pass game to compliment the run. Iowas failure in passing I assume trickles down from 1. Bad coaching @ the position and play calling , 2 .Bad QB in general, 3. Tie between poor protection and poor receiving corps, not including TE. Majority falls in the 1-2 category.

    @@dubswilland I can definitely agree with that. Yes I do know he is an above average quarterback. The only thing I think that is holding the offense back right now is a proven go to receiver. Brown is who I suspect but not technically proven in an Iowa uniform. TE room is good so that should be fine. Also besides Logan Jones, the offensive line was lacking last year. It’s really hard to point definitive fingers from the Shh show that’s been going on the last few years, but those two aspects need to prove that they can be good, if not need to be improved via coaching/recruiting. But if the offense starts clicking maybe receivers will get open, relying on the run game. I think football is such a mental game, not just learning plays, knowing assignments, routes, etc. Boosting a players confidence even if he is lacking in strength/skill/athletic ability in general can change their game. Maybe this shadow over the offense can be lifted and move on. Go Hawks

    @@dubswilland also I was referring to Deacon Hill in 2023 and Spencer Petras in 22 21 . Petras had a couple good games but was overall just bad at Iowa. He may. E good somewhere else. Hill was just not ready, or not a power 5 conference football player. I accepted him though. He presented himself well. If he wouldn’t have gotten strip sacked so many times I actually think he was tolerable. He did what he could.

    Iowa had the 4th best defense in the B10 and one of the worst offenses in the country last year. With the new additions to the conference, iowa is going to have to make a giant leap, mostly on offense (obviously). IMO the most teams the B10 gets into the playoffs is 4. To get that many, a lot of things outside their control have to go right. I think 3 is the most likely number; with the SEC getting 4 (probably due to remaining bias), the ACC and B12 get 2 each, and the G5 gets 1. And there's your 12. If thats the case, they will need to go at least 11-1 to get in. Their only head to head with the other top contenders is against ohio, which they very likely lose, and cakewalk out of conference schedule. Meaning if they go even 10-2, they won't get in over a 10-2 ohio, oregon, michigan, or penn state who would have either a head to head win against each other and/or another top out of conference win. Can iowa improve enough on offense to go 11-1? I don't think they can. While they only play 1 of the top 5 teams in the B10, their last 4 games are Wisconsin, ucla, maryland, and nebraska which is far from an easy schedule, and i think they drop at least one. Just my 2 cents

  • @Pipsqueak-

    I think my Hawks go 11-1 due to Wisconsin and Nebraska being at home. I don’t think Van Dyke or Raiola can go into Kinnick and win vs a Phil Parker defense. Nebby is also a night game. Traveling to UCLA and Maryland is no joke but neither strike me as tough places to play and we get a bye before the Maryland game. Don’t think either team is set to contend in the B1G this year with win totals at 6.5 and 5.5 both juiced to the over. Like Sam said in this video, Iowa will be favored in 11/12 games. If our offense can make any sort of reasonable jump, I believe we win out after Ohio State.

  • @scottd1903

    @scottd1903

    23 күн бұрын

    @Pipsqueak- it's possible. They have about as easy of a B10 schedule as u can get. But that's another strike against them and doesn't win them any tiebreakers. If raiola has a solid year, Nebraska could very well be a sleeper team, and I think Wisconsin is going to be quite a bit improved. They should handle ucla and MD, but neither are gimme games on the road. I just don't see 11. I don't think their offense has improved enough. Can definitely see 10 wins, but they'll probably need a lot of help to get in with 10 considering the weak schedule and possibly/probably no wins against ranked opponents. They'll likely need at least 2 of michigan, penn state, oregon, and ohio to have 9 or fewer, and nobody else to have 10 or more. Unless, the SEC eats itself and has a bunch of 9 and under win teams and only 1 or 2 with 10+. Then the B10 could get 4 or 5 teams in. u guys likely need a lot of things beyond your control to go right. Or u just beat ohio and then basically guaranteed to get in even with 10.

    How is it that people will say that Wisconsin and Nebraska in year 2 of their rebuilds will be surprise teams then also say they are easy opponents? I can understand when comparing them to a mich or OSU but even Mich and OSU only play each other once in the regular season. To be fair, I hate preseason talk because predicated playoff teams could end up being cupcakes and cupcakes can be 10+ win teams. You never know how the schedule actually is until the end of the season when the W and Ls are shown.

  • @CAL_08
    @CAL_0811 күн бұрын

    You say there's no way an 11-1 BigTen team misses the playoffs, but 11-1 doesn't factor in the BigTen championship game ,where if they made it to that game would be paired up against the #1 BigTen team and very likely to be heavily over matched. Absolsolute best case scenario for Iowa is 11-2 with a fairly weak strength of schedule, which would be a hard sell for making the playoffs.

    We beat both those teams on the road last year with the worst offense in CFB. This year we play both at home with hopefully a serviceable offense and damn near the same defense. I get both of those teams got new QBs in Van Dyke and Railola but I still don’t see either going into Kinnick in winning.

    Iowa may make it but it will only be because of the uneven scheduling remaining a sham. Iowa only plays OSU this year...no PSU, Oregon or Michigan. You, Sam, have it correct-they have to win 11 or 12 regular season games to qualify for the CFP.

    Huge Iowa fan here. I think Iowa will win 9 games this year. They will lose 2 games while double digit fav. It’s just what they do. Last year was an exception. Which could have easily gone down the path of my prediction. Iowa’s defense is very underrated in the country last 4 seasons. I’m saying top 3-5 in the country. It’s hard to analyze their stats due to time spent on the field because the offense has been so …. Embarrassing.. is a good word. PSU game last year was their only bad stat, but offense was only on the field for maybe 33 plays. I think Iowa offense net yards was less than 50? Someone can correct me please. Don’t want to get in a huge comment argument but the D is 😘. I will hope for the 11-1 season but def expect the 9-3. Good video.

ESPECIALLY, if there are 4 big10 teams already selected while 3 are selected from SEC. I really like your content and analysis.
