Why Indian Students In US Are Struggling To Get Jobs? US Based Author Explains

Indian students in the United States, including those from the elite Ivy League universities, are struggling to land jobs and even internships this summer amid a slowdown in job growth in the world's largest economy. US-based author Soundarya Balasubramani spoke with NDTV's Parmeshwar Bawa to discuss how Indians abroad are affected. She explains that "over-hiring" during the Covid pandemic and the extra steps required for work sponsorships lead to employers preferring locals over international students.

International students or any other immigrant that goes through proper channels, are the ones that are facing issues. Locals, if talented, could easily get a job. There are a lot of startups that don't even know about the sponsorships. So when they hear the words "I am looking for sponsorship", they reply that they will get back to you and ghost you forever.

As soon as my 401 k plan starts I will ho to India and spend time from October to April, each year. Young generation take my advice. West is a HOLLOW spiritually. The true NIRVANNA lies in the East. Seriously, you need to research better- there doesn't need to be a "message received" from high office to hire local talent first. That's one of the PRIMARY requirements for a H-1B visa. The employer has to prove that they have been unable to find a citizen or a permanent resident to fill the position, which is why they're looking at those from other countries. Foreigners were hired indiscriminately 20 years ago- not today, with American students going for stem-based degrees, we have plenty of US talent to fill our positions. The question you should ask is, why are these Indian students not able to secure employment in India, or are so unwilling to return to India after their education.

There is no chance in hell that they can repay education loan from Indian salaries if they are forced to go back. Remember Narayan Murthy pays 1 dollar per hour salary and makes you work for 70 hours per week in India. My suggestion is to find a girl friend so that you get 6 chances as a couple to crack H1B visa lottery. If one partner gets H1B, get married and other person can work on H4 EAD.

Well the three top reasons Indian students find it a challenge are: 1. They do not plan in advance, target and apply in time. The season starts at least 4-6 months before graduation. But Indian students invariably wait till they graduate before applying, which is too late already. 2. They do not learn how to market themselves to prospective employers. Many universities have placement counselors who teach how to get ready with a marketing/sales pitch, but Indian students in general do not take advantage of such facilities. 3. They do not follow up on job leads or referrals effectively. Indian students invariably send an email, and wait for a response, and do not vigorously follow up to find out the status.

Since late 2000s, more than 70% of H1b visa approvals were granted to Indian nationals and another 20% were granted to Chinese. So all other nationals in the world are battling each other to get the rest of 10% opportunities. That’s not fair because there are no diversity inclusion and equality in here. That may be one of the reason why Indian students are getting hard time now, plus H1b visa worker salary and visa sponsorship cost are going up quickly whereas the benefit of hiring a cheap H1b is diminishing. If the company would pay almost the same cost to H1b worker as a US citizen worker they would rather hire US citizen.

Because the education they get in the US is expensive in terms of Indian rupees. It will take many years of toiling in India to pay back the loan. I am sure you would agree as many of the American's themselves take lot of years to pay back student loans. They get education because it is like a license to work in the US. If they earn in dollars for atleast a couple of years and go back to India, they get the full advantage of dollar's purchasing power. They would save as much of what would have taken 10-15 years if they worked in India. Many of them work for 4-5 years or 10 years in the US, come back, take a good house in metropolitan city and start living. This gives them unfair advantage in real estate, result is that house prices and inflation goes up and others can't afford these.

The US is a big enough country where absorbing a large amount of Indian students would not feel overwhelming as opposed to a small country like the UK. That said, there is a pushback against hiring immigrants in skilled IT positions before US citizens. The main reason is that the IT immigrant salary is now almost on par with the US IT salary so there no longer is an economic benefit for most companies. Expect it to get worse if Trump gets elected. Legalized immigration will become much more difficult for immigrants without degrees from US universities.
