Why Indian Students In US Are Struggling To Get Jobs? US Based Author Explains
Indian students in the United States, including those from the elite Ivy League universities, are struggling to land jobs and even internships this summer amid a slowdown in job growth in the world's largest economy. US-based author Soundarya Balasubramani spoke with NDTV's Parmeshwar Bawa to discuss how Indians abroad are affected. She explains that "over-hiring" during the Covid pandemic and the extra steps required for work sponsorships lead to employers preferring locals over international students.

International students or any other immigrant that goes through proper channels, are the ones that are facing issues. Locals, if talented, could easily get a job. There are a lot of startups that don't even know about the sponsorships. So when they hear the words "I am looking for sponsorship", they reply that they will get back to you and ghost you forever.

Seriously, you need to research better- there doesn't need to be a "message received" from high office to hire local talent first. That's one of the PRIMARY requirements for a H-1B visa. The employer has to prove that they have been unable to find a citizen or a permanent resident to fill the position, which is why they're looking at those from other countries. Foreigners were hired indiscriminately 20 years ago- not today, with American students going for stem-based degrees, we have plenty of US talent to fill our positions. The question you should ask is, why are these Indian students not able to secure employment in India, or are so unwilling to return to India after their education.

Population growth has exploded, making it difficult for any government to provide jobs for everyone. One should consider getting a janitor job, like I do.
Many Indian students have strong accents and cannot fit in many professions. Most successful Indians are in engineering, medicine, and PhDs in science.
It's not America's job to employ Indians. It's Modi's and the respective state CMs.
Well the three top reasons Indian students find it a challenge are: 1. They do not plan in advance, target and apply in time. The season starts at least 4-6 months before graduation. But Indian students invariably wait till they graduate before applying, which is too late already. 2. They do not learn how to market themselves to prospective employers. Many universities have placement counselors who teach how to get ready with a marketing/sales pitch, but Indian students in general do not take advantage of such facilities. 3. They do not follow up on job leads or referrals effectively. Indian students invariably send an email, and wait for a response, and do not vigorously follow up to find out the status.

Very good question. But why would the current mainstream media bother with non issues. Common now, everything in India is rosy, we are the 5th largest country.
Since late 2000s, more than 70% of H1b visa approvals were granted to Indian nationals and another 20% were granted to Chinese. So all other nationals in the world are battling each other to get the rest of 10% opportunities. That’s not fair because there are no diversity inclusion and equality in here. That may be one of the reason why Indian students are getting hard time now, plus H1b visa worker salary and visa sponsorship cost are going up quickly whereas the benefit of hiring a cheap H1b is diminishing. If the company would pay almost the same cost to H1b worker as a US citizen worker they would rather hire US citizen.
Jobs are for local people it is reality
Indian students are the hardest working amongst there peers. Since we come from a world renown cultured society, expectations to succeed are high. If job opportunities are limited, give the United States a chance to provide better opportunities. Indian students should have the ability to adapt with out losing there cultural identity. This is enshrined in the United States constitution.

Because the education they get in the US is expensive in terms of Indian rupees. It will take many years of toiling in India to pay back the loan. I am sure you would agree as many of the American's themselves take lot of years to pay back student loans. They get education because it is like a license to work in the US. If they earn in dollars for atleast a couple of years and go back to India, they get the full advantage of dollar's purchasing power. They would save as much of what would have taken 10-15 years if they worked in India. Many of them work for 4-5 years or 10 years in the US, come back, take a good house in metropolitan city and start living. This gives them unfair advantage in real estate, result is that house prices and inflation goes up and others can't afford these.
Sorry to say not only India but also the American graduates . Demand is ls getting lesser.Bettwr they go back to India.
THINK HARD BEFORE INVESTING 1 CRORE IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN USA. Thats a 1 Lakh a month in Interest alone.

where in India do you get a 12% interest rate. may be you are talking about investments in the market that comes with a risk.
Time to go into the trades my friend. Come to the US and be a plumber or electrician or work the oil fields or even as registered nurses.
It’s still better than working for 20-30k in India!! Even doing part time jobs you’ll end up saving more, rest experience of living in different country, interacting with other cultures help you grow as a person!! Rest just hanging in there and acquiring the right skills some or later you’ll end up with a good job abroad 🙌 if anyone can afford to move out they should do so making themselves as well as their families get a better lifestyle
I have been saying this for last 10-15 years . Immigration does not make sense . You loose your culture , family , food and try to adapt to a new culture that never accepts you as one of their own . If greed is everything for you then sure go ahead be miserable so you can make more money . I think it makes sense for Indians to stay in India and help her become stronger country.
Money can get a degree not talent. Moreover, it's an educational business for their country. 1st they need to employ their citizen. When you go for a trip enjoy it and come back don't ask for a share in the property lol. Our country is not less than any other, study here be enterprunter and employ them...

Isn't education a business in India ? See how many colleges have cropped up since the 90s and how qualified are they ? Is is civil or a mechanical engineer truly capable of implementing what he learnt ?
It is known that one can buy a university degree in India. However, Indian students' credentials are not considered authentic in the U.S.

@@lakeofbays1622 Bonker logic. People with similar socioeconomic station in India comparbale to let's say Germany, would NOT be bigger than Germany. Those lower than that are not exactly contender in meritocracy. So the Indians and Germans in level playing ground competition are similar in numbers.
This is not the concern of us, why India need to be so concern..give jobs in India
I think it is cheaper to hire an Indian living in India outsource than Indian students here

@@matthewrock1467they can definitely go back if they wanted to. But we Indians do not accept defeat. US not getting jobs in USA is a defeat and we will not let that happen.
Soundarya talking about immigration is like having a gully cricketer from a third tier city in India comment about major league baseball.. she spends half her time posting about how she got her O1 visa and promoting her self published a book on how to game the US immigration system … these news producers need real experts and not LinkedIn clickbait generating content creators who comments about job market heating up are from “friends saying that…” or boiler plate answers of “over hiring cheap interest rate”…

No it is increasing now.
The US is a big enough country where absorbing a large amount of Indian students would not feel overwhelming as opposed to a small country like the UK. That said, there is a pushback against hiring immigrants in skilled IT positions before US citizens. The main reason is that the IT immigrant salary is now almost on par with the US IT salary so there no longer is an economic benefit for most companies. Expect it to get worse if Trump gets elected. Legalized immigration will become much more difficult for immigrants without degrees from US universities.
There are too many career coaches. That's proof there is a problem.

They are hardly students but potentially job seekers in US.
A more relevant view would be why Indian students are murdered in USA recently. This is a matter of great concern. So the government of USA should arrest this negative development immediately or else Indian students will change their destination of higher education.😢

Why are people who cross the border illegally getting work permits? If H1b visa holders lose their jobs the grace period to find another job is only 60 days. Who can find a job in 60 days? It has been shown each H1b worker creates 2-4 jobs in related STEM fields and contribute massively to economy. US universities charge full fees to Indian students and give subsidies to others and will collapse if they didn’t recruit them. Industries will collapse without the H1b from India who get the most patents and pay into Social Security and Medicare. This is discrimination
