Why I won't make a video on how to read more books

I often get asked how to read more books, or how to read faster. Here's why I won't tell people how to do that.

It’s actually so refreshing to hear that you read slow because of your adhd and anxiety, because I’m the same and I always feel frustrated by it. It almost makes reading tedious for me sometimes, which sucks because I really do enjoy reading. I always feel like I ‘should’ be reading faster but I’m trying to be more gentle with myself and just get used to reading slow.

It's sad that productivity culture has seeped into our hobbies, particularly reading. As a slow reader myself, I sometimes compare myself to people who read 70-100 books a year although I mostly gravitate towards 500+ page books so I end up with 30 or so. Maybe you could make a video about different types of reading - i.e. extensive vs intensive.

You are so right, reading is not a competition. People get into statistics, reading goals end start judging. Its ridiculous! I love reading but I have a full time job and I am dyslectic - this means that my reading pace is probably 60% of an average non-dyslectic. And that's ok - actually I am winning here because I get to spend more time inside the stories I read, more time enjoying and digesting them :) It is also nice to see a book-tuber that acknowledging their reading stats should not be compared to others.

@@katarzynawr1123 absolutely, it's the Goodreads challenge, the monthly and yearly stats, the "stars" they give to each book. I also have a full-time job that involves a lot of writing and reading, some days I don't read at all for pleasure. It's like when I was a child and enjoyed every page and story, even re-reading many times. I love Willow for her honesty, it's super refreshing to see.

Great discussion. Reading is not a competitive sport. Quality trumps quantity. If reading is a hobby for someone, it doesn't matter how many books you read, if you read 12 books in a year or 50 or 100 or 300... the important thing is you enjoy it and it enriches your life. Some books you can skim through but others require being savored.

I am reading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy atm and this is a 1.000+ pages read and will prbly take me the whole of February or more, but I don't care. I enjoy the reading so much and want to take everything in have myself soaked up in the atmosphere and don't want to miss any sentence, any meaning ,any connection, or hint of foreboding. Therefore I even read extra slowly, reread certain passages again and again, make annotations, think about the characters and their (sometimes) complicated situations and relationships within the background of the Napoleonic wars. Tolstoy's prose and writing style is such a treat that quite frankly, I don't even want the book to ever end but want to stay in it forever. And this means so much more to me than reading and finishing a certain number of books per month or year.

And reading short pieces too. When I was in a 9-5 that could have been done 9-noon, I had still had to be prepared to take calls from my boss or work on a new thing at a moment's notice, so it was difficult to concentrate on book during my workday. But I read all kinds of shorter articles and pieces online from all kinds of sources that entertained, educated and enriched.

You are so right. I also think that a reading "slump" looks different for everyone, just as we all read at different speeds and levels. For some people a slump might mean that they don't feel like reading. For me, a slump means that I want to read, but cannot decide on what. The indecision drives me nuts. lol. I only read 3 novels in January, but you know what? They were all books I REALLY enjoyed. I would choose quality over quantity every single time. Couldn't agree with you more.

I genuinely love being a "slow reader" (never timed myself, don't think I ever will, but I know I like to revel in the sentences when I'm enjoying the story) it helps not spending so much money since I prefer to own the books I've read. I don't really like buying things unless I need them, so I've accepted that books can be my one silly hoarding subject. Just brings me so much joy when I see them all together.

Preach it Sister! I relate to this so much. People I know have asked me similar things whenever they see me reading, including how many books per day, month, year. I always say 'I don't know,' because it's mostly true. It really doesn't matter to me, because why should it? I just love doing it. The quanity shouldn't matter, or it doesn't to me. They also assume I'm a fast reader, but that's really not true for similar reasons that you've described. Big fan of your channel. Your content is great, aand you should be proud. Greetings from China. (From Scotland, but I live in Shenzhen now.)

I found your channel a few days before 2023, and i was reading like 2 books per month or less. I ended up reading 5 books in Jan, and today I am going to finish my 3rd book of feb. I am a full time university student as well. I think the difference is finding the books that you actually like. I mean some books are great, but I still might not like them. I was often suggested Murakami by people around me and I really hated his writing (part of the reason I like your channel lol, also the adhd). You helped me discover literature I actually enjoy. So yeah, not forcing yourself to read something just because you are supposed to helps with your reading habit. Also just the drop the book if you hate it midway or whatever. One has limited time in their life anyways.

You are so wonderfully refreshing, I hope you know that! I hate those ‘how to read more’ videos that don’t factor in peoples actual lives! I don’t work but I have 3 children. I very rarely have time to sit and read a book, but I average about 15 books a month by utilising audiobooks. I read quickly because I put them on 2.5x speed and listen while I’m cooking, cleaning, ironing, showering… whatever 😂 They’ve been an absolute godsend to me. It’s really lovely when I do get some free time here and there to pick up a physical book or read on my kindle, but I usually find my mind wanders since I’m so used to reading alongside other activities.

I used to be a teacher too and I remember people would say "Wow, you're so lucky, you get off work at 1 PM, you must have so much free time". They didn't know I was going home to a pile of paperwork everyday, lesson plans, prepping materials, grading tests and essays, while barely making enough money to survive :)) I wanted to say yeah guys, I'm living the life :)) Being able to work on your own terms and make your own hours is a dream so I hope you get to do this forever :) As for the reading, thank you for sharing this. I think if you watch a lot of Booktube content you tend to start asking yourself why you're not reading more (especially when you see people doing wrap-ups for 30+ books a month) but truth is it doesn't matter, like you said. What matters is the experience and the joy you get out of reading. If that's just 1 book or 2 books or however many then that's enough.

This video made me feel better about this whole thing. I have been on a reading hiatus for a few months because my main focus right now is to be kinda obsessed with my weight loss journey to get my health in order. I mean it has been almost my highest priority because I’m one of those people who has to be a bit proactive about things before it gets out of hand. I used to read so much but now I just don’t have the slightest mindset to read as little as one page. It’s okay. I accepted the fact that it’ll have to wait and it’s always going to be there until I’m ready to get back to it. I always feel warm and happy glancing at my bookshelves every single day and I remind myself how much I love to read. And your channel made this experience even more gratifying, dear Willow. I remember leaving a comment on one your videos on how I always watch your videos when I unwind and get ready for bed. I actually still do. If I’m not extremely exhausted 😅 Thank you for being a part of my life ❤😊

I left teaching after ten years because I was tired of the consistent burnout (I'm AuDHD). Even so, reading is my favourite hobby.

I came across this video as I was thinking about how much I hate things like the yearly Goodreads challenge. I often wonder how many of the people who hit a really high number really got something meaningful out of everything they read or if they were just picking books they could read super quickly so they could hit whatever quota they decided to set for themself. And really, what’s the fun in reading if you don’t remember anything you read? In any case, thank you for this video. I think I came across it at just the right time.

Honestly, I kinda hate some booktubers when they do their wrap ups and highlight how many books they've read. Last year I read War and Peace, and it took months. I read other stuff on the side, but it took over my life. And when I finished it I said "oh shit, I only read 3 books in 3 months". I had to stop myself and said "come on, you've just read mf War and Peace, give yourself a break". It was one of the most gratifying experiencies of my life, I even wrote a small article for my eyes only because I've learned so much that I felt like writing that down somewhere. It's so simple, "quality before quantity", and somehow we manage to forget about that. If someone says they feel more joy in saying they've read 50 books they THEMSELVES found to be shitty instead of enjoying one GOOD book... they're lying. I'm mad. Sorry for the bad english, not a native speaker. Not sorry for being mad.

And thing is, once you truly enjoy something, you'll naturally dedicate more time to do it anyway. I used to scroll Twitter on my lunch breaks, but once I fell back in love with the reading, I had no regrets trading that Twitter time to read that little bit more. And some days some other hobbies might call out more to me and that's fine, too! We're not on strict schedule with things that bring us joy. I'm not free from this pressure though, it usually manifest itself when I'm reading a longer book. I keep thinking to myself "I need to finish soon, otherwise number of books read this month will be so low!". Yeah, and what? Literally no one judges me on that 🙈

Different books are also read at different speeds. A theoretic non-fiction book is read different than poetry, a contemporary fiction, a romance book or a classic. Reading poetry usually benefits from reading it over a longer space of time, reading a few poems spread over the days instead of powering through the words to get to the end of the book. For non-fiction books I usually go per section/heading/chapter at a time, also depending on the writing style and the subject matter.

There was a time when I fell in an awful 4 year reading slump because I kept comparing myself to my coworkers that read tons of books for our job, books that were only academic and valuable for the job we do. And... I came to realize that while learning and researching is important, I can't deal with it as often as they do... and that's fine!. Back in December of last year I picked up Stephen King's IT and after that I haven't stopped reading, devouring book after book... books that entertain me, and ONLY entertain me. It felt like getting off some shackles that kept my brain imprisoned under the idea that I need to be a walking knowledge filled library, turnes out I don't, go figure! Is there people out there that will criticize me for my book choices? yes... but I don't give a fuck anymore, and it's so liberating!! Willow, your work here on KZread helped me realize this and regain the love of reading that I had when I was a teenager, and I will always be thankful for that. Thank you!!

As an autistic person I adhere to my routine naturally and the way I introduced reading as an ongoing hobby was making sure I read before bed every night. It has helped with my insomnia too which I am beyond grateful for. I also have aphantasia, which means I cannot see mental pictures, and this affects my reading in an interesting way. I am able to skim read descriptive paragraphs and get the gist of what is going on without spending the time to develop the scene in my mind like most people do. This is an example of how I may read faster than some people, but it is not because of reading speed, it is because of how my brain works. We should figure out what works best for ourselves and not compare to others, every brain is different and therefore every reader is different.

Like you say it doesn't matter anyway, it's not a competition. Quality not quantity. Empathy for your mental health issues too. I live an 'at home' life that I love too, because of health issues (mine & partner's), which suits me as it suits you. A combined curse and blessing really. Here's hoping you are able to keep hoping you can keep going as you are and don't need to look for work outside the home. Though the way things are here in the UK, nothing seems unlikely really 😕

Only 15 this year! Lightweight😁 Im sorta in the same boat, virtually no responsibilitys that suck free time, i think its just a question of reading regularly and not doing it 5 minutes when you go to bed, i read on public transport and always have one in my bag for when im delayed somewhere.

For me it depends on the book. If it is just a quick book as a palate cleanser example Moonraker by Ian Fleming I read it faster than a book like War and Peace where I want to keep up with the families, understand the background and really what is going on I take my time.

This seriously means a lot. As someone who easily gets thrown off books because it doesn't feel right, also has MH distractions, and reads insanely slowly - I struggle with quality over quantity. 💚

Honestly, I partially blame it on the "200+ books read in a year" videos and overall trend. Reading's so nuanced and subjective (book length and time you can spend can differ wildly), it sucks that people strive to replicate reading a big number more so than enjoy what they read. Quality over quantity, read at your own pace.

I take a big chunk out of my day to let my mind run free and just absorb whatever it gets a hold of, on 2 hour walks, while on a jigsaw puzzle, on my commute or just sitting in my bed leaning into an emotion. But sometimes I'm really unsure of whether that has any increment value and if it even needs to I could be reading/listening to a book instead. Is it worth to look at the trees, the blue hills in the distance, the towns and passing cars, the construction workers busy on site, the occasional deer or rabbit running over a field, over and over again even if it's never quite the same? In a way it's part of the ongoing choice thinking vs feeling for me

I personally see a reading slump not as a unique phenomenon, but as a king of tiredness, and there is only one thing you can do about it - you take a rest. It is ironic even: i want to get rid of a slump, because i want to read more, but i only got into it because i already read too much

I mean, if it really is "book burnout" that is the problem - then yes! For me, though, it tends to hit if I'm trying to read books that don't have the right tone for the life situation that I'm in. The clearest example I can give is when I unwisely tried to read 'The Windup Bird Chronicles' - an ennui-heavy book about an unemployed dude whose marriage was failing even before his wife disappeared and who seems to have no friends or hobbies - in the middle of the pandemic! I got stuck in the middle of it, and then got stuck in two more books, until I hit 'The House in the Cerulean Sea', a book fluffy and life-affirming enough to snap me out of the mini depression that quarantine + windup bird had sunk me in.

I have had terrible anxiety the past few years (pre pandemic) and adhd. It can feel so debilitating that I can't even read through one page with out spiraling thoughts/zero concentration. Very specific routines are the only way for me to get myself to do anything and when I fall off track it can take me weeks to get back. I think last year I must have started like over a dozen audiobooks was kind of into it then almost an hour in realized I was not paying attention at all. You are right our reading lives vary from person to person and like you said reading is your job. Just like the saying quality over quantity it applies to books too. Also I have read some manga this month but omg I've been in a book hangover since I read The Last House on Needless Street back in October/November!!

I wish people would know what average reading speed actually is when making this kind of statement about how slowly they read. I am a slow reader with about 20 pages an hour on average, depending on book and how often I need to reread sentences because I wasn't listening to myself. But 20 is what I can usually calculate with. That is very far from a page per minute, which is mostly considered fast reading. I agree with you that the amount you read is not important and it has a lot to do with time you spend reading. The answer to reading more books is always spend more time on it, no matter the reading pace. But please don't call yourself a slow reader, when your reading pace is average and above.

@@WillowTalksBooks I know it wasn't your intention. I'm sensitive in that area as the pressure in the community to read much is already high and when we perpetuate the idea of average to fast reading speed as slow I honestly worry what the effects of that are. I did like that you pointed out how your ADHD influenced your reading. and the other things you said. It was justthat point that rubbed me wrong.

Luckily after my career change (do you also use reconversion in English in that context?) I can acctualy listen to audiobooks while working. So I got trough most of Discworld in audioform at one point. I like "normal" form of reading but audiobooks, if the right person is reading it are really fun. It's like going back to your childhood when someone from your family was reading to you.

girl 60 pages in an hour is not "very slow" I barely read 35😭 that said thank you for this video. most book influencers act like it's normal to read 20 books a month while also having a job that is not related to reading, other hobbies, and time to socialize. are their days 50 hours long??

I read about 30 pages per hour, so I'm sloooooooooow. I used to be able to read faster, but thanks to my progressive MS and my autism (which also overlaps with ADHD), I have slowed down considerably. It took me a while to come to terms with that. But I agree with you, it does not matter as much as picking the right books for yourself.
