    I think, for the most part, the stilted and unnatural dialogue was intentional. For instance, Arthur's therapist barely talks at all and doesn't respond to him, similarly with Murray. I think it reflects how Arthur views that no one listens to him and acts as if what he says doesn't matter. It could have been unintentional, but I think because it is told from Arthurs POV itt kinda works. I dunno.

    This is why I can't hate the joker If this joker fights batman then I would want batman to help him instead (not like freaking bootleg punisher from chuck snyder) Because just like Bruce he has been through a lot too I would want Bruce to help joker and so that joker can redeem himself. It's sad how a movie that shows how indifference for, and the mocking and demonization of the mentally ill could lead to someone performing horrendous acts of violence, triggers a controversy that makes people fearful for their lives. Shouldn't a movie that shows how the lack of understanding of people with mental conditions instead, trigger actions to prevent cases like "Joker" from happening? I just can't wrap my head around the supposed controversy. You can empathize with a murderer's tragic past without condoning their crime.

    Good comment. Hurt people hurt people, and maybe we should consider that before we act gratuitously cruel to a stranger. It's time for an uprising for change in this quite cynical society we live in. Its NOT okay to continue the status quo!!!!!!

But admittedly they're very different. This film isn't as up front about what message your supposed to take away from it and how the rules of it's reality work like The Dark Knight was. I guess it's different tastes in storytelling approaches. Love Dark Knight, but the ambiguity of this film is something I really appreciate about it.

    Firstly I want to say I really enjoyed your review. I thought you offered something to this many others haven't and for that you should be proud. Considering this is one of the most discussed films this week. That said I do have nitpicks... I know as well as you do how important a good sponsorship is to have to keep yourself afloat. And by no means do I think you did this without thinking... But the trade off for a 2 minute long opening involving ad placement results in a ton of watchtime being lost which negatively impacts your channels future performance. I had to learn that the hard way. I had a small issue with the review itself but it's the same one I have with a lot of reviews I watch. And that issue is... Explain what your issues are specifically and how you arrived at those conclusions before moving on. From a pacing point of view, it serves to make the review feel less of a constant flow from idea to idea and more like a series of thoughts far more disconnected than I'm sure they are. For instance... @4:40 you say "The film to me does feel like it's smarter than it actually is... The story's incredibly simple and some elements are rather predictable. But it's how a movie executes simple ideas that makes a movie good or bad. And for the most part the movie feels very fresh and it executes its ideas rather well. Still thought, it is a bit melodramatic." I think personally this needs specifics if you are going to point out flaws effectively. I'm by no means saying that these criticisms aren't founded. But it makes for a much easier to understand viewing experience if you guide the viewer through your thought process. The reveiw felt like more of a praising of the film than a critique of it and that's perfectly fine and probably was what you were going for. But personally I think if you're going to disect the themes and messages of a film, you need to point to specifc moments or at the very least not brush past it too quickly. Again your observations about the film when expanded upon like the camera work (with examples) and the film being shot from Joker's perspective really works in this video. And I think the criticisms could too if you maybe point to specific examples of where the film falls short for you. Love your stuff!

    I feel like most people love or hate Joker because of the mind set they had before even seeing the movie (yeah, that includes me). I think that if we wait a few years most of us will realize that it's not that big of a deal in any way. There's an opinion that I saw on Twitter and a Twitch livestream saying "If the movie wasn't called Joker, do you think people would still love it as they do now?" And it's amazing because it pretty obvious that we wouldn't, we latched onto this movie before even seeing it because it's a DC movie and that made most of the general comic book movie fanbase's opinions biased toward liking it. Everything this movie's done has been done before and, let's face it, has been done better. Sure, it's never been done in a comic book movie, but I'm not asking for prestige here, I'm asking for originality, and Joker's many things, but original isn't one of those things. Its only merits are given to the fact that it's a comic book movie and not just a regular one, and the funniest thing is that if it doesn't wanna be treated as a comic book movie, then all its merits get thrown away ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If the Dark Knight movies and Spider-Man movies get so much crap nowadays just because there's a new Batman and Spider-Man, despite those movies being (to a point) pretty solid flicks, imagine how this movie will get treated in a decade, given how criticizable and flimsy it is.

    I believe this film was a revolution for comic books. Many people were criticizing the joker for not being the opposite of Batman or not having the same origin hinted as in various comics. Comics took inspiration from all mediums including its own so when they knock this film for doing Its own thing it doesn’t make any sense to me. We are at a stage where we can take inspiration from the comics and making “normal” films out of them. It’s a movie about a comic book character but it’s not a comic book movie.

    Arthur's unhindered downfall leads to him essentially dooming another kid to his life. It paints a duality between types of coping: sociopathy and radical stoicism A false dichotomy? Yeah, sure - most people just keep trucking along. The thing is that Bruce has always had Alfred to keep him from making boldly inhumane decisions. As a person who was paralyzed with anxiety for years, having a support group is the only thing that kept me alive. I agree that the movie's thematics require a bit of extrapolation from the viewer, but solid nonetheless.

    I actually love the way the movie ties batman and joker together, cuz both batman and joker are born on the same day and it shows how the characters react to trauma. batman takes his traumatic experiences and turns it into something good while the joker does the opposite. so I think now a good batman story that follows up (in an ideal world) these events can answer your criticism of showing the audience the better way to do things.

    Despite my narrative problems with this film, I love the new direction that this could bring to comic book movies. It really takes a chance on the story that it wants to tell, and that sense of liberation is exciting. The big takeaway from Joker is that more comic book movies shouldn’t be afraid to tell different kinds of stories. More standalone pictures would also be great. I love me some cinematic universe, but it’s also nice to just see a standalone story that is solely concerned with being the best that it can be. The direction, cinematography, score and performances (Phoenix is worth the price of admission alone) are all great. I do have significant problems with the narrative though, however, the general mood and atmosphere combined with the aforementioned great qualities are enough to transcend its flaws.

    👏Since when were filmmakers, artists, writers and creators in general, responsible to teach their audience about morality?👏 Look, the movie is rated for adults, they put warnings, it's a compeltely different case if parents are chill with their kids watching adult rated movies. it's OK if you didn't like it, but I don't sincerely think it's gonna inspire riots or shit. Don't get me wrong; this movie deserves all the awards in the world, and if Phoenix doesn't get an Oscar I'll be rioting.

  • @JimmyDThing
    @JimmyDThing4 жыл бұрын

    See, I don't think the movie is about mental illness, it's just a part of it. It's not focused on social issues because it's goal is to leave everything as terrifyingly open ended as all of those issues actually ARE. Because that's how Joker works, that's the terror of Joker. He just nudges you into realizing just how horrifying reality is. He uses the part of you already tempted to delve into the chaos that you know is just on the edge of civilization. He uses the idea of narrative to attack narrative. It is a true anti-narrative film. Every single time you think the movie and Arthur Dent's story is "about" something, that is robbed from you. There is no core story, the world is just mad and this person has seen the depths of that and it's made him become an agent of that chaos.

    It's hard for me to put into words how good I found Joker (2019) made by the director Todd Phillips. This movie is great and so far one of my favorite movies from this year and in my opinion the best movie of 2019. The cinematography of the film was gorgeous, the soundtrack was mostly perfect, the acting was good too but probably the main reason why I love this movie so much is Joaquin Phoenix. What a fantastic actor! I love the Dark Knight trilogy from Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger's Joker. Ledger gave us a realistic Joker for the first time and Phoenix continued his legacy with respect. Phoenix gave us the same in his own way with a deeper background. In addition with an excellent Joker performance e.g. the Dancing and his Joker laugh. Just fantastic! The Joker's Mystery is still contained in this movie and although it's an Origin Story, I still have the feeling that the Joker has remained a complete Mystery and will probably always remain. The movie gets a 9/10 from me. The best DC movie since The Dark Knight (2008)

    In a nutshell: its the comparison between terms Graphic Novel Vs. Comic Book When you say Comic book you capsule it into a certain style that already has it's own boundaries and style but when you say graphic novel it can be any graphic novel regardless of it's content Joker is a Graphic Novel Film

    There was actually plans to make another movie like Joker, a villain origin. It was a movie about Bane's origin, comic book origin. I would want to see either Bane or Killer Croc origin movies but as soon as they pitched the idea of the Bane movie, it was immediately denied due to the backlash Joker showed.

    I’m addition to the more obvious parts of his performance, his physicality is great. The way he runs, scrambles, and rolls around after he’s thrown is awesome, and especially when he yanks the file with manic strength. He can overpower characters much stronger than him through pure crazy. I also totally agree with the Nightcrawler comparison. We do need more movies that can take chances like this, because they’re so much more “real.” This is the edge DC could use to compete with Marvel’s crazy epic blockbusters. They built a universe around Tony Stark and his legacy and toys. DC could build a universe from the ground up with its villains and darkness. It feels so much truer in essence to their history.

    I really don’t think Joker was intended as a deep or philosophical movie, nor was Joker intended as a sympathetic/relatable/likable character. The movie simply asks a question about what made Joker, Joker, and answered it in a few layers. Joker is very obviously flawed but the fact that it was made and inspired people to talk about it, is wonderful.
