Why I Think Motorcycle Lane Splitting is Safer if You Do These Things
One of the perks of riding motorcycles in California is being allowed to lane spilt legally. In this video I'll show what I look for when I lane split and how I do it safely in traffic. A few speaking points as to whether or not its safer to lane split or stay between vehicles in my opinion. #motovlog #indianmotorcycle #motorcycles

Great video, and it shows basically exactly how I approach lane splitting. I’ve only had to do it a few times, and it’s generally when I’m on the 405 in The Valley, but yeah, I’m surprised at how many people actually get out of your way intentionally. I have even had truckers give me a thumbs up or wave me through to let me know that they see me.
I was amazed over there lane splitting for how many people actually moved over. ours move over too, right into your way
Texas needs to legalize this too. Just a normal safe speed filtering through traffic should be allowed.

Should be legal everywhere. It is in most of the world
I lane split whenever I commute for work. Morning traffic in the bay area is horrible. I am conservative about it and generally follow the rule of only going 10 mph over flow of traffic. I always assume I am going to get cut off and its saved me a couple of times. I try to be polie to the cars as well, not revving my engine obnoxiously but only doing it when needed. Definitely wave to the people that make room for me and help create a good coexistance culture vs being rude and cars hating riders splitting.

I wish we had that here.... I hate being stuck in traffic. Makes me nervous.

I can't imagine not being able to. I'd hate it.
Lane splitting is an absolute must in CA, if you want to get anywhere. I was stuck on the San Mateo Bridge one afternoon while going home from a Giants' game at Candlestick Park. I was jealous of all the bikers going about their business while it took over 3hrs to cross the damn thing.

Oh man. So I rarely drive a car anymore (don't own one) but I drive my gfs car if we go somewhere together. I can't tell you how much I'd rather be riding. One thing ive noticed though. Believe it or not cars are bigger a-holes to other cars than they are to motorcycle riders
I fully support lane splitting and will still do it occasionally when it makes sense. I don't feel bad about it because our engine can still burn up at idle.. The scout has an automatic timer to cut the engine at 10 minutes for that reason.

I actually just found out about that timer. I was taking pics and it shut off😆
Wish lane splitting was legal up this way, that would make life way more easy. In fairness most lane splitters I see up this way are not doing it responsibly at all and a lot of them will tear right up the middle. You going a reasonable speed is smart too because honestly most cars will not hear you from behind them either, it won't be until you pass them. If the tesla is on auto pilot it wont move because the system doesn't process that.

Yeah they forgot about motorcycles when they came up with that. They think small bike tail lights are cars far away
I think we can all agree that Tesla drivers have a consistency to be the one who causes the problems. You can be sitting in their mirror clear as day, and they'll wait until you're about to pass and just change lanes while you're next to them.

Yes! They either stay hugging the lane and don't move, or actually start moving towards you. I can only think of one time a Tesla made room for me
its only legal here if under like 30 kph and coming to a stop but my excuse is i was changing lanes faster than others while staying under the speed limit

Fair enough
I own a tesla, and I would like to give my 2 cents. I've always moved dramatically to the left to give motorcyclists room (and to show them I see them) But in a tesla, the moment you do that, you get the lane departure alarms going off and the car fights you to get back into the lane. Regardless though I usually fight the car back into the side of the road with the alarm blaring either way, but I can see why some people don't move at all (not counting when autopilot is on) (and yes I know you can turn off the lane departure stuff but it's pretty useful everywhere else (until it isn't because it's not perfect)) Btw if anyone has any questions regarding this topic and teslas I am glad to answer to my experience

Not only is it legal in California if a car tries to close out on you, they can be charged with a vehicular manslaughter

Very interesting. Question as i'ts not legal anywhere i've ridden. Can you "lane split" between the median (where the barrier is between the two flows of traffic) and the actual lane if that makes sense? I'm going to assume you can't since i don't see people doing it but I would think that would be the safest way to do it?
@RickyBobber

No you can't go anywhere outside the vehicles only in between them. So no riding the shoulders or no passing on the right unless you're turning. Glad you brought that up. I have another video on the laws of lane splitting but this was more of a "what to look out for" thanks for watching CC
you got sooo much more room there compared to what I got here hey. could fit a mini through those gaps

@mhoeij I actually don't care to filter on the surface streets at a light unless its on a hill or something. Maybe I'll do a follow up video on why. But mostly because the cars are closer together and they're stationary
