    Do you lane split? If your state doesn't have it, would you like it?

    To your 3 questions above. Nope, nope and nope. Too many cars riding the lines here. No need to even try to stuff my machine into a gap that's already 1/4th to 1/3rd the size of a normal lane and have to deal with bad car drivers.

    Texas doesn't allow it. Would love it if we would, however, it might take a while before folks here get used to the idea. Car drivers could perceive it as an "unfair" advantage and either not cooperate by moving over slightly or worse, moving into the path of the motorcyclist to block them.

    Occasionally you get someone who wants to block you. I just slow down and if necessary get back into the normal lane until I can get around them.

    No, no, and no. I have zero sympathy for consequences of choosing to lane split. Riding is already dangerous enough. Its incredibly stupid that its legal anywhere.

    Like all things in motorcycling, it's up to the individual to choose what risk their willing to take.

    I was amazed to see people willingly move out of your way. I'm more used to people seeing that your intention is to move forward, so they actively pull over to close the gap and keep you from advancing. The crab bucket mentality: "If I can't move, nobody can!"

    In San Diego a lot of people do move over. I don't count on them doing it though. If they are blocking the way, I'll just wait until there is a safe place to go around them.

    I lane split for probably 25k miles when I used to commute from LBC to Santa Monica on the 405. I found another dangerous time was when traffic opened up some and started moving. When traffic was dead stop or near stop when cars got closer to each other there was less chance they would want to switch lanes. So I would also be very aware as traffic expands and contracts with speed and space. Also never assume that just because you are in between the carpool and fast lane on the double yellows that people won’t cross over! Highest alert state is required for active and safe lane splitting. You can lose your life, or get seriously injured. I’ve witnessed the latter right in front of me so be mindful of speed and position at all times

    Haha.. Loud pipes saving lives is a bold assumption. But as a truck driver in a vehicle thats feet above the roadway as well as very loud inside, I certainly do hear bikes that are moving through the traffic at a reasonable rate compared to the traffic around them,revving the bike as they split. No I don't believe loud pipes save lives, smart riding does. Also the bright day lights work great too. But loud pipes with good judgment can make you more noticable... Love your videos and watching your channel grow.

    @@mototipz Yeah, the legality is one thing but you certainly have a lot more drivers that actually expect there to be lane splitters and are more cautious if it's not only legal but has been for a while.

    Louder than stock pipes definitely help drivers notice you. Sure headlights do as well, but thats relying on the driver looking in their mirrors and being aware that there may be a motorcyclist coming. If they're looking at their phone - they MAY hear the exhaust, but they certainly wont see you. So I wouldnt say one is better than the other...

  • @mototipz

    @mototipz

    Жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't rely on either lights or exhaust getting the driver's attention. They may not notice either one. In the end, the only thing that will keep you safe is your riding and awareness.

    Absolutely will never lane split ever. I disagree that cars are looking for you. I always assume they are on their phone or looking for an open lane so they can go faster. Especially in Florida this would never work. Cars are constantly changing lanes and you would definitely crash here. It’s more risk than I’m willing to take.

  • @mototipz

    @mototipz

  • @mhoeij

    Cars don’t need to look for lane splitters, it’s up to the rider to stay safe, and the only way the rider can do that is by not going faster than their ability to brake. A rider who isn’t prepared to brake hard shouldn’t go between lanes, but a rider with good braking skills and a good eye for traffic can safely go between cars, as long as the speed difference is modest.
