Why I stopped being a Slimming World Consultant & started Calorie Counting

This is probably the top question I've been asked since leaving Slimming World in August 2020, after nearly 2.5 years as a consultant running multiple franchises. Why leave that and then start calorie counting and launching the Busy Bitch Diet.
Please note: as I say in the video, if Slimming World or other weight loss plans are currently working for you - then that's amazing. This is about finding what works best for you, my personal experience and the reason made the swap. Slimming World does work for a lot of people, but I also know there's other people who, like me, may struggle and maybe this video might help.

I'm with you on that, I'm never going back. Certainly the thing I hear the most is that those who've made the switch, when they get their heads around all the things they've been told in the past and truly started calorie counting they love the flexibility, control and being able to make choices which work for them and their families

I followed SW for many years, I could lose weight but never quite get to target or maintain, I worked with covId all through lockdown and put on 4 stones through stress, the thought of eating slimming world food again makes me want to vomit, doing it for so long has put me off certain foods, doing nutracheck now and it feels so much better (and cheaper) 🌈🌈🌈🌈

Summer that's an epic achievement, you must be so proud. Maintaining your loss is the toughest because it requires long term changes. However, keep in mind your weight naturally fluctuates a bit day to day, week to week. There are also times where you'd expect to gain a bit - holidays, Christmas, celebrations - the key is knowing that at any time when you've have a gain you can drop your calories down again and get the weight off. It's looking at maintaining over a longer time

@@busybitchdiet1007 Absolutely right, I weigh daily just to keep an eye and the number bouncing up and down doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Most people who have regained weight all seem to follow the same mistake of stopping weighing themselves and not tracking. I’ve accepted I will need to do both long term if I want to be slim. I’ve stopped whining about how “ you only have one life , it’s not fair I should be able to have what ever I want all the time “ etc etc. Yep one life but I want it to be a longer one with less health issues being 8 stone lighter !

I went to a slimming world consultant and said surely I couldn’t eat all the pasta potatoes and rice I wanted. I could see her struggling with the answer, finally she said 7 Oz jacket potato, 75 gm pasta and rice. One third of the plate with protein a third carbs and a third veg, remember to look at the size of the plate and only use the middle of the plate not the rim which is for holding it to take to the table! But that wasn’t what she said collectively in class! I am now calorie counting having tried keto, ugh,Weight Watchers and slimming world 3 times prior to speaking to the truthful consultant. I believe that way will be more effective.

I know it is easy to go under or over what you need, but this menu as described is not fully on plan because you are supposed to have one third of your plate as speed food (very low calorie) which makes it impossible to fit half a pack of spaghetti, half a pack of mince, or the extra spud on your plate, unless you were eating from a bin lid. Only the oats meal was "fully on plan" . Customers are also advised to eat until they are satisfied, not eat all they can.

Having studied nutrition prior to joining slimming world I think the thing that people forget is slimming world is teaching us the better options for our bodies the more fuel like foods rather than calorie counting as calorie counting tends to make people more restrictive of what they eat and they will be more likely to fall off… slimming world is long term you can’t calorie count your whole life or just until you get to where you want or you will just end up putting the weight back in quickly afterward. Overall weight loss is calories in vs calories out but surely you would rather over eat on something knowing it’s doing good for the body 🤷🏽‍♀️

Enjoyed this and totally get it. During lockdown, at home, most definitely less active, boredom setting in, cooking (from SW books) and eating more. When I say eating more I mean eating more free food, still weighing and measuring healthy extras and syns. Weight started to increase and I soon realised that to maintain that weight I had to really restrict. This in turn led to guilt and totally disordered eating. In the past I would have blamed myself not the plan but it's sheer idiocy to believe that all those extra cals don't count. No weighing, no measuring, no counting is a myth. Thank you for sharing. You have a new subscriber.

It's amazing the power of one small change x

With menopause there is the perception you can't lose weight, you absolutely can, but you may need some additional support too - it's not ever as simple as one plan suits everyone. Ive been in slimmers world 3 times over almost 30 years. Its taken me a long time to realise the plan affected my relationship with food. I'd overeat on free food just because I was allowed rather than thinking "I'm not hungry I won't eat anything or I'm full now I'll stop" I'd eat treats I didn't even really like because they were low in syns and you better believe I ate every single syn I was allowed in a day whether I wanted it or not. I'd also fast before a weigh in and then the day after I'd have a "cheat day". I realise people can follow sw without developing those problems but for me learning how to calorie count and understanding a little more about nutrition has been the way to go.

I’m intermittent fasting until lunch and then having a super free lunch and some fruit (nothing overboard), my ‘free food’ (rice, pasta) I’m still weighing to ensure I don’t go crazy. I portion out food…if it says it serves 4 then that’s what I do…I make 4 portions. If it says that it’s free, I take that as it’s low calorie so it’s ok to have a rationed portion of it. I drink mainly water, black coffee and the occasional sugar free squash. I stay relatively low on the syns front (between 1-5).

WW is a US company, although they do have a lot of UK members too. In terms of hunger, I'm able to make the calories work for me, choosing whether I want more protein, or carbs depending on what I need. I also find I snack less, just because it's free as such. For me, I enjoy being able to have the freedom to eat the foods which work for me and my family and I stretch the calories I have to enable me to not feel hungry x

I also think the our lifestyles play a huge part, I lost 5 stone (I have put 1.5st back on) in six months (I am a man, also), but I went from eating everything all day to basically cooked chicken for lunch, mugshot as a snack etc, like not proper meals but tbh I am very lazy and do not cook so I was happy eating like that, but I was going to the gym ALL the time! So if I ate more (and I never did SW properly, like 80%) I would continue to lose weight, however when I met my partner all we did was walking so we would be going to buffets all the time and I would still lose weight, and I mean some days we would walk 10 miles and this was quite a normal thing so I was eating awfully but I was still losing weight. We now live together and both work FT and honestly I struggle so much, I keep binge eating and I have no idea where that comes from and definitely do not do the exercise we once did, barely leave the house a lot of the time! Now my mum has lost doing CC, she cannot do SW (for the reasons you describe in your video) and she’s doing extremely well. Now I just cannot do it, I’m too much of an eater and I think it’s that element of SW that I like, where I would eat less than CC, because I find with CC I eat all my calories too early and then I’m starving in the evening and then think f**k it, I’ve failed, I’ll binge which obviously explains the weight gain. Really this is just my observation and totally not a criticism, more at myself. I think like for me at least it’s still having that control, and I find with CC you can have anything, but I think that can be a detriment to some, especially me as like I said I’ll eat all my calories too early, but on SW I wouldn’t do that. Really good video though!!

Thank you. I’ve joined SW and then quit because it doesn’t work so so many times. I blamed myself that I didn’t do it right. I struggled with speed food because no one in my house will eat those things which left me with food waste. I tried to clamp down and stop coming up with my own ideas and only eat what I found on the app or in the hundreds of £ I spent on cookbooks. Again, leaving me with food waste. And it didn’t work. It never worked. I’d get tiny losses and then gains and then losses. And the only way I’d lose is to COUNT and then tell lies in group about how I was on plan which left me feeling bad for lying and worrying about being exposed. So I’d quit, AGAIN. And the doubt I’d feel in what others were saying in group left me feeling like a big fat grump. I’d come away thinking, that 5lb loss you got, you just didn’t eat. Don’t lie that you ate nothing but pasta dishes and hundreds of yogurts. Ha. And sitting there clapping for losses knowing when it was your turn you’d hear the awww what can you do next week to get a result. I’d be like, starve because I was 100% on plan. Only to be told, you must have had too many syns. Errrm no, I had too many potatoes! 😡 But anyway, I’m so happy to hear of someone else that says it didn’t work for them. My friend got to target. It works for her. I was so jealous and hid my feelings from her. And she is my friend, I shouldn’t have to do that. Not to mention telling her lies about what I was doing to get results. Quitting freed me from stress and guilt. I still struggle but now I know it’s because i made bad choices that week and not because I’m a failure. Will definitely follow you because it’s great to find someone that understands the struggle. Thank you again.

Hi Sally, thanks for the comment. The argument at SW was once it's blitzed it reduces the effort by your body to process it. Now there may or may not be some science in that somewhere, however the difference in calories is so tiny, the banana is still going to be around 85 calories. It's similar to the dried v fresh pasta - a portion of one is 340 ish calories, as is the other - one is free, one isn't and is a lot in comparison but both have the same calories.

Hi Gem, thanks for the comment. I too have met people who've done really well, I was a consultant to a lot who did well - I can't deny that. I have also met a lot who struggled without knowing why, those who got to target and never managed to sustain it and those who just never got on with it from the start. For me, I personally prefer calorie counting, I love the flexibility it gives me along with enabling me to feel in control of the choices I'm making. I also accept different things work for different people and sometimes different things work at different times for people and that's ok too x

My friend has lost 21lb in 7 weeks on SW and eats none stop! I'm talking massive lunches and stuff. I however don't eat as much as her, I'm within a sensible deficit and can't get more that 1lb off as a mean number. I'm upset and frustrated. I'm convinced my friend is taking something and not declaring it as her losses are 3.5 and 4lb every single week without fail. 😒

After YEARS of yo-yo dieting… (I’ve done WW and SW over the years… I always found I lost for a bit then plateau… The “diets” and they are fad diets, simply because they are not sustainable and/or flexible as they seem… During the lockdowns I put all my weight back on plus more! So I actually counted the calories whilst doing sw and found that I was in actual fact consuming a lot of calories!!!… So I’m back to square one, but I’ve learnt that this time, I need to find my own way, and concentrate more on exercising and being in a calorie deficit, which means that if I want a normal sized slice of white bread 🍞 I can have it! 😂 x

Hi Tracy, I'm meeting more and more people who are doing both SW & CC. I do know however that those who are doing so are doing it in secret as such. SW in its own advertising at the moment says about never need to count a single calorie and in group, I'm not sure what the response would be if you said you were doing both. With regards to apple cider vinegar, the scientific community seems a little split as to whether it helps, but I've seen people mentioning it before. There's very limited scientific research into the benefits, but I'm a great believer in if it's helping you and you've sought medical advice then fab.

Hi Rachel, I absolutely feel you. Switching out of SW mindset and into CC can take a while because everything you thought was free you suddenly realise isn't and is higher in calories that you've almost been led to believe. Where possible you almost need to start from scratch, forget everything you learned at SW and start again. The most important meal to track is dinner, so start there and plan the rest of your day. Hi Chantelle, I did still hit my 1/3 of speed food in the calculations too, but the intake of the calories of those make little difference to the amount consume in free food. I could easily have the jacket potato, beans and cheese and have a salad on the side and it would make no difference, except adding an extra 50 calories for the salad. It would still easily come in between 400-800 calories or more. My spag bol always included mushrooms, tomatoes, onions etc to again have the 1/3 veg, but would still have been way too much in calories due to the pasta and mince I'd be allowed in unlimited amounts

Be careful though, 1000 calories a day is less than the recommended minimum of 1200 a day and it should be calculated to you - your height, weight, age, gender and activity level. Too little and it can negatively impact your weight loss along with other challenges too. If you need any help calculating the level right for you, please let me know
