Why I Sold my Off Grid Expedition 2.0 and Bought a Kimbo!

This a talking head video to try and explain why I sold my Off Grid Expedition 2.0 trailer and bought a Kimbo slide-in camper for my Tacoma. Learn from my mistakes to hopefully help you get the right camper in the first place. Probably a boring video most will click away from but I did throw in a trick you may, or may not notice lol....thanks for watching! The opinions in this video are based on my personal experiences.

Thanks for watching and commenting RoadDog! No regrets with the Kimbo! Trailers have their own advantages....unhooking and exploring with the tow vehicle being the main one...if I'd bought a Scamp or something with standing room perhaps I'd still have it... but.... I do not miss towing for sure....

Thank you for sharing, and I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Off Grid. All the best to you and your wife, safe travels and congratulations on the Kimbo - Mark King seems to be very focused on innovation and quality - he comes across as a straight shooter, and it's reflected in the Kimbo. You got a new Sub. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for subscribing! Live and learn....the Expedition was a bad choice on my part, we had some good times with the Off Grid so spreading the cost over the time we had it makes it easier to swallow the cost lol. Very happy with the Kimbo camper and company!

Sorry to hear about your experience with OGT. I know the earlier models had issues and our 2022 Expediton has been awesome. HAven't had any issues and love it. Any trailer will have issues but everyone is different and your own experience is yours and no one can fault you. Enjoy the Kimbo and will still follow you.

Yeah I have to believe OGT must have the early problems I encountered sorted and they've made many upgrades i wish I'd had on mine like the doors! Glad to hear yours has been solid. We're enjoying the Kimbo more every day! Thanks for watching and commenting and it'd be awesome to have you still follow and comment now and then!

I looked hard at all of these off road off grid campers and glad I did not go that route. Im a full timer in 3/4 ton Silverado and a Capri truck camper and could not be happier. Lots of the same reasons you mentioned. Standing up is huge for me and I have no desire to tow anything. Hope your new Kimbo works out.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering what happened to the off grid. For what these mfgrs are charging for tear/ square drops, there should be zero quality issues. Looking forward to the new videos.

Yeah they’re are a lot of trailers out there with zero to very little quality problems… seems like if you add off road or overland to the description they add a 50% surcharge lol but just stick with vendors that have a track record and you should not have the issues I had…

Glad to have you subbed...thank you! Costly lessen the trailer was...life goes on tho. This weekend we've been at Overland Expo West and Off Grid is here showing their new trailers....they've fixed all the issues I had with mine but looking around the Expo I've seen so many better trailers out there imho.... Cheers...thanks for watching and all!

I almost bought a squaredrop/teardrop having convinced myself it would be alright. Ultimately I bought a "wedge" , also expensive, built in Australia and full of detail issues, fortunately not un-correctable ones because the dealer is out of business in the USA and the manufacturer believes he is the victim. I thought I wanted a Kimbo, contacted them because I want to look at one first. They said they would be at Expo West, they were not. Not saying I made a 2500 mile r/t just to see them, but they are now off the list. Hope you have better luck on this one.

The RV industry is kind of shady….buyers beware lol. Imagine buying a car and the suspension sags and bends at the frame after 10k miles…government would be all over that but somehow the RV guys can literally sell anything and get away with it.

What are the specs on your Tacoma? And have you done anything to the Tacoma to accommodate the kimbo?

  • @BirdPhish

Thanks for watching and commenting to start!...the Taco is a 2013 4x4 with the 4cyl and 5 speed manual, no lockers or 4x4 modes ..mostly analogue. I've put an Icon Stage 3 lift kit with add a leaf and also Firestone Air Springs in the rear and KM3's for tires. Rear swing out is by RigD. It handles pretty nicely with theKimbo on board....13.5 to 14 mpg

@@nadiahamel5969 Thanks for watching and commenting! A fully loaded Kimbo like mine come in at about 1100 lbs. I removed the side jacks which saves about 100 lbs so about 1000 lbs now. Payload on my Taco is 1350 I think....it's a bit more than extra cab or 4 door tacos being a regular cab it weighs less and therefor has a bit more payload. It handles the Kimbo pretty nicely getting about 13.5 to 14 mpg with the Kimbo on board.

@@nedaCFilms yeah the designer of the Kimbo Mark, his father was a captain of a submarine so that experience of seeing the inside of a sub as a kid influenced the design aspects of the Kimbo and gives the spaceship feeling....really love the aluminum elements that show thru on the interior. the door ...it is actually a " hatch "lol

I keep lusting after a Kimbo myself. I have a low mileage 2008 Tacoma AC 4x4 4.0l V6 currently set up with a slide in fiberglass utility body converted to camper. Basically set up with lots storage above and under the bed, but not the layout of Kimbo. Having lived in a sailboat, semi truck sleeper, 6x12 converted cargo trailer , the Kimbo would be like heaven..

It's has the 2.7l 4 cyl. with a 5 speed manual - base line 4x4 simple truck with no fancy crawl modes or power windows / door locks etc....bought it new in 2013 and have had zero issues with it. An extra cab would make storage easier but I love the short wheelbase the reg cab has....park or turn around this truck/camper anywhere :). Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@BirdPhish big fan of my 2.7 5 speed w/ manual doors/ windows that motor runs very smooth and with out a doubt the cleanest oil of any motor in any vehicle I’ve ever owed - not sure why or who cares, but to me it’s very telling on some level as to how this motor was designed and operates daily
