Why I Shaved My Head - Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Three weeks ago I shaved my head. I didn’t do it to make a style statement or to make any other statement. I have Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia which causes progressive hair loss of the frontotemporal hairline. In simple terms, I’m losing the front section of my hair. FAA affects postmenopausal women between the ages of 40 and 80 years old (I’m 53). The condition is irreversible but may stabilize after a few years.
I first noticed my thinning hair last year during a vacation in Italy. My hairline looked different to me one morning. It was slightly sparse in sections, and I could see my scalp. I threw a headband on, enjoyed the rest of my trip and made a doctor’s appointment for when I returned home. Over the next six months, I saw various doctors and took a multitude of tests. Finally, a scalp biopsy revealed that I had FAA.
Shaving my head wasn’t a rash decision; I thought about it for some months. As I began to embrace the idea, I googled information about women with alopecia, women shaving their hair, and close-cropped hairstyles. In my search, I read inspiring stories, found great hairstyles, and discovered strange links for women with shaved heads. I bombarded my dear friend and stylist Royce Mitchell with photographs, and we came up with a plan.
On the morning of my hair appointment, I couldn’t get to the Marco Pelusi Salon in West Hollywood fast enough. I was ready to let go of my hair and get on with life. A few days before, I told a group of friends about my plan. The reaction was mixed ranging from excitement to being completely perplexed and emotional. Their responses only confirmed my decision to move forward. At this point in my life, I honestly don’t care what other people think. Shaving my hair was about feeling comfortable and happy with myself.
==Update==
Three weeks later, I’m still thrilled with my choice. I love that it takes very little time to get ready in the morning or to go out at night. I have a renewed love for earrings (maybe I’ll design a new collection, it’s been a while). Best of all, my daughter Nina loves it. She encouraged me to do it six months ago.

Long hair, short hair or no hair. Don't care ... go back to work.
My diagnosis was the same as yours, I'm 2 years older than you and decided no drugs. I shaved my head May first. I told no one until after it was done. No regrets. You are beautiful, inside and out.
I had problems with thinning hair since I have hypothyroidism. Also my iron was really low. It got to a point where I thought I needed a wig. Once I started taking my iron supplements and collagen my hair started to grow back. Anyway you are an inspiration.

I was just diagnosed with scarring Alopecia at 8:00 this morning. I’m sad/mad and very tired. I saw it coming , so now that I’ve gone through the signs of denial- onward upward. After my biopsy scabs go away I will be shaving my hair off. As always I will ‘rock’ this new hairstyle and chapter in my life. Thank you for your wonderful video. GOD BLESS

You took this journey so many years ago, but I just discovered your video today. I'm 50 and have been slowly thinning through my 40s. I've learned to let go of my attachment to my hair and am progressing towards what I think will end in a beautiful buzz cut like yours. You are so classy and feminine and gentle, it comes through in your video. Your genuine nature is palpable and so beautiful to watch. Thank you for doing this video. You make me feel even more brave to enter the next chapter of femininity without hair. :)

I'm going on 53 in a few months and for a year, I had been doing an undercut with top still long. It didn't make sense to me after a year because I was thinning on top. So, after my 52 birthday, I shaved off the whole entire thing. It's liberating, it's letting go of fear of what ppl think, it's everything positive. Have you shaved your head, yet?
I cut my hair in 2015. I was tired of the covering with braids and weaves. I talked to my husband before going to the barber and he was super supportive. You look great!!! It was awesome to the brightness in your smile after your cut!!!
Omg Lisa oh how I cried watching this! Being in my 40s and I've had chronic self esteem issues my whole life... your video has truly given me strength! your beauty radiates from within and it just makes you glow so much more beautifully on the outside... I've been rocking with you since 1990 and I can say, you've aged like a fine wine! xx

I love you Lisa! You are and always will be an amazing and a blessed inspiration in our lives!
Your video inspired me to do the same thing and I can show my beautiful face with my buzz cut and love it! I use to live for my long beautiful hair. It was down my back, but bald dead center and side. I own over 20 wigs and cutting my hair was so liberating. Your video was shot 5 years ago, but I hope you still see the comments. Hello. I know this video is old however I am so glad I found your video. I have alopecia affecting mostly my right side and have been debating if I should shave the sides of my head. Some people have suggested get shots to encourage growth but I hate needles (lol) and just you stated the side effects are usually worse. Anyway, seeing you and how beautiful you are yet deciding to go in the less vain path...incredible. Obvious love for self...You help me make my decision. Thank you, sincerely.
You look really beautiful! I suddenly realized I had frontal fibrosing alopecia. It was a shock to me and I have embraced wearing scarfs and wigs. But when I take them off I feel soo ugly. I just turned 61. Hugs to you🥰🥰🤩

What if your scalp is real shiny after the big bald cut? What do you do to minimize the shine? Any suggestions?
Hi Lisa, my name is Regina. I am just now seeing this video for the first time. I was diagnosed with Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia May of this year (2022). I was losing my hair and the tails of my brows and some eyelashes. I also was having a burning and itching along my hairline and the front area of my scalp. My dermatologist took a biopsy of my scalp and it came back with this weird diagnosis I’ve never heard of before. I am 55 years old and post menopause 2 years. I have Lupus SLE and Hyperthyroidism 14 years diagnosed. I hate looking in the mirror. I hate looking like I’m sick (losing my hair). I know it’s only hair, but I like it…a lot, and I miss it. I’ve been taking steroid injections to slow down the inflammation and spironolactone as well (cystic acne at 40 years old). I think about shaving it everyday and getting the courage like you. Thank you so much for being transparent. God Bless❤

Thank you for sharing your story with me. I was 54 when my hair loss began, and we experienced similar early symptoms (the burning and itching along my front hairline). I've encouraged many people with our condition to go ahead and shave their heads. It symbolized a fresh start, and seeing my bio hair fall to the floor felt like a weight lifted. I've also tapped into organizations like Alopecia World (alopeciaworld.com) to learn more about alopecia and to hear other people's stories and journeys. I've rotated through having a shaved head, wearing wigs and scarves, and just letting the remainder of my bio hair go wild during Covid. I (like you) loved my hair, and to be honest, there are days I miss mine too. But I don't want my lack of hair to stop me from enjoying life. I'm still me. It's just a new physical version of me that I embrace daily. I don't want to sound trite, but it is just hair; we are all more than our hair. These days, I try to put energy into keeping myself as healthy and stress-free as possible. I do so through being mindful of what I eat, getting enough sleep, moving my body, journaling, meditating, therapy, and surrounding myself with supportive, uplifting people I can support and uplift back. Doing these things have become even more important to me since the Covid lockdown. My hair loss truly took a backseat to the realities of the world. Again, thank you for sharing your story, and please keep me posted on your journey. I'm here to support you. Blessings to you ❤️

Hey Tammy! Thank you for sharing your story and for watching the video. I say rock whatever makes you feel good. Shine wearing wigs, shave your head, whatever you want to do. What I know from this experience is that our hair doesn't define us. That's what society wants us to believe. We're strong and powerful with or without hair. I wear wigs, hats, headbands. I like to switch things up and enjoy my options. You're an intelligent, mindful, beautiful person because of who you are, not by how much hair you have on your head. Flip your thought about this being a struggle and turn it into I'm powerfully confident and I can rock this. Part of the cause of my hair loss was being post-menopausal. I get it. Initially, it was difficult to accept my hair loss but didn't want it to keep me from enjoying life. I want to have fun, enjoy the people I care about and have cool experiences. I won't let hair loss stop me from all of that. Life's too short. It's what YOU think about YOU that matters. That gives you your strength, not other peoples thoughts and opinions of you. Keep me posted!
Just spoke with a trichologist today, and she decided that it would be best to cut my hair as well. My locks are past my buttocks. I have had my hair in locs since 2009. It is breaking my heart as you said, "You are where you are", I must move forward from there. You are beautiful. I hope to be as beautiful as you when I cut mine in two weeks.
I have FFA as well. I also shaved off the rest of my hair after I got sick of trying to cover it. I’ve been happily bald for 4 years now.
I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to say you look absolutely gorgeous... ❤️👍
