Nice job Zach! Pro tip: You can use zip ties to hold the gasket to the pan (maybe every third hole) if you didn't have the means to flip the engine over. Just get the open holes threaded up, then cut the zip ties out and do the rest. Much better how you did it though.

Nice job, as usual, Zach. Hope it all works out for the best. I'm old, so I've seen a lot of my shortcuts come back to bite me in the butt so I'm with a couple of the other guys and would have invested in a new quality gasket. That said, if it does ever fail, then its just another great video for all of us to watch!!

Really nice job diagnosing the issue! I know it may seem extreme to remove the engine for a slow leak but it needed to be corrected.

Great stuff as usual Zach! Looking forward for the next one. I assume the setup to run the engine will be similar for my 5.0LX. Cheers!

Hey Zach try Gasgacinch on those gaskets. I have used it and it is awesome! Harley builders have been using it for years due to the vibrations in the engine. It works amazing

Zach, Gio here from Weston Long Island sound. It will be beyond awesome if you could do a tutorial on an outdrive repaint job. With so many outdrives in desperate need of a new paint job because they are left in water/saltwater with chipping paint and/or encased in barnacles, etc, this video is desperately needed. There is not a decent video in all of KZread about this. I'm not talking about a can of spray paint.

Nice job Zach, I hate replacing gaskets of any kind. You’re never sure if you’ve done it right until you get everything back together and (usually) reinstalled into the car/boat. Then if there’s a leak it’s back to square one.

Hey! I love your videos! I need to replace some rusty bolts (That hold the fuel pump). Is there a specific kind of new bolt I should use??

One of my starter bolts-the short one-broke off inside the block. I’ve tried drilling and ez outs but no luck so engine needs to come out. I figured I’d pull the pan and clean whatever has accumulated in there out while it accessible. Now I’m questioning if I want to disturb a non leaking pan. I priced the gasket at the local boat place and they want $140. My understanding is the block is the same as a1964 Chevy 2 Nova 4 cylinder so I’ll price that gasket I suppose.

The reason you had an oil leak is because you have to apply sealer to the timing cover/ block seam where the gasket over lapse the joint. this is required for all similar joints. other than that...great job!

I have a question or need advise. i wanna do a engine swap on mine to a v6 4.3. has that crossed your mind on your boat and is it possible. should i stay with carburetor or go MFI. want to keep it as simple as possible. also a concern on any mods need to be made for motor mount and stuff. can I also use a reg automotive engine ? thanks for the help in advance..

Hi Abel, yes, you can. The engine blocks are made by GM, so it already is an automotive engine. You might need to make different motor mounts. I believe all GM block sizes will work for the rear mounts. It should only be the front/side mounts that will need to be changed

  • @Michaelsbackyardmarina

All that work and you re-used the old gasket, why. Always use new gaskets. At least that is what I do. Good video, I have the same motor in my 1976 Starcraft

This oil pan gasket is an unusual case, most of the time when replacing other gaskets they are thinner and partly made out of more paper like materials. When that kind of gasket is compressed and sets it leaves permanent indentations which makes it less likely to seal 100% if you try to reinstall it. so I agree with you that type of gasket should be replaced. However, the gasket for my oil pan is thick 100% molded silicone and does not have any permanent indentations and is still soft and compressible, the same condition you'd expect from a brand new gasket. So why not use that gasket? That's my reasoning at least. We'll see if it holds up, I'm an experimenter. Might still come back to bite me 🤠

@@ZachsGarage1 I have re-used this type of gasket on transmission pans and stuff like that. They are way more accessible and yes they have that metal ring in the bolt hold to prevent over torqueing the gasket. I hope it doesn't come back to bite ya. It's a lot of work to get at it in a boat for sure. Keep the vids coming.

  • @lustfulvengance

if it was my boat I think I honestly would have done away with the gasket completely and just done a really super good job with the silicone! If you apply that stuff correctly it'll never leak and it almost glues the two parts together!

Nice video. Might want to look to see if there's a torque sequence for the oil pan bolts. I believe that may also help your leaking issues since the pan will be on with equal pressure over the entire pan. Check out kzread.info/dash/bejne/nHqqlcSzfbGng9I.html for a good installation video. Shows where to put the sealant on the corners.
