Totally hear you! I’ve watched some videos where the overall message feels negative towards working of any kind hence why I don’t love the “I don’t dream of labor” trend. I agree completely with what you said! Those should be basic requirements of any job!

I was going to say this! The anti-work and Great Resignation movement is more of a rejection of the conventions around work that put human-ness second (i.e. kissing a**, putting your own needs second for the sake of things like a longer notice period, needing to go "all hands on deck" all the time, excessive restrictions around using PTO). It's more saying, I don't want to put my humanity second for the comfort of the entity paying me. Working means sacrifices on the employee's end, sure, but the balance has been far too tipped against the employee until now.

Love this! I quit my Corporate job a month ago because it was an insane rat race! The money is not worth the stress. I hated to being asked where I saw myself in 5 years, I love that you addressed that! Corporate culture can be toxic if it’s not what you’re into.

I hear you on that. About 6 years ago, a manager asked me that question. It was a ridiculous question for many reasons, but a key one was that he did not care, and was not interested in supporting me. I simply looked at him and said nothing. I did not fill the space. He mumbled, "well, umm" and moved on.

I just quit my job with the federal govt. today! Go girl!!

I've listen to several of these stories. Most people do want to work. They just want to be happy. Get paid a fair wage for what they do. Have a balance between work and home life. I wish u luck.

If you are more interested in home and family, then don't try climbing the corporate ladder, because companies will quickly get rid of the slackers, especially when they are making $75K a year plus benefits. I have yet to find anyone who says they have the "perfect" job.

In europe we get 25 days plus public holidays off work.

The truth. Sometimes employees quit, because the buddies they made throughout their work experience. Have quit or gotten fired. Sometimes it’s best to leave all the happy and sad memories behind. I can sometimes randomly hear random employees cry alone in the bathroom stalls.

The truth, most people quit because they are simply lazy and don't want to work. You are not going to earn $75K a year without investing some time and energy into the job. If it is too much for you, then go to work at Walmart.

I feel like you've put into words how I felt when I quit my first job. That firm was not what I wanted however, we were pushed to move up in the company. I'm glad that you were able to work on getting out and working on what you were ready to work on!

Not sure if know how unemployment works but if you voluntarily quit your job, you don’t receive unemployment. So that doesn’t effect me! And thank you for the good luck! I would call them preferences, not requirements though😊

@@purplenights1 I would venture to say that every person must life a life that makes them happy. Don’t lecture her on her life and what she “has to do”. It takes some people a lifetime to come to this realization, she is fortunate that she has this insight at such a young age. Life is so much more than work. Some people will live 65 years and only then suddenly realize that truth.

I’m in the parking lot of my job, with two week notice in hand, and trying to pep talk to tell my supervisor. I’m so scared but thank you for making me feel less alone. I’ve felt all of these feeling on the months leading up to making this decision. Thank you.

Hi Paige, I announced my leave notice to my manager this month. While circumstances may be different, I feel like we both are looking for a job that will aggregate to our personal lives, instead of being a source of disruption. I also have the privilege of taking some time to think this change through while unemployed, and that is key towards going forward in a great direction. I hope thinks are good for you two and that your next job will better suit your needs!

I found this video when looking for confirmation that I should leave my job. While I am not in corporate (I’m in academia), I am in engineering and related a lot to your struggle to choose which degree and what path to follow in engineering. I am a bit further along in life and have two little girls and a family to support, so quitting has even more pressure tied to it. Thanks for this. Felt good to not feel alone in all this.

Thanks for this! What you said about career growth and climbing the ladder resonated with me. I, too, feel pressure and guilt for my desire not to partake in the notion of corporate growth when everyone around me is spinning in circles to secure their promotion and 5% yearly raise.

It’s honestly crazy how much those you surround yourself with on the daily affect your mental state and feelings about yourself! I've been enjoying alot of your videos and i appreciate the good advice. I can relate with alot of this. I am quiting one of the best jobs i ever had and it's hard

I just quit an engineering job too, I let a bunch of red flags slide when I accepted the job. I only stayed at this job for 2.5 months, I liked doing the work, but the company wasn't good at all. I also had tasks to get done and I wanted to go home after 7-8 hours a day so I had to put 100% energy in constantly. Only breaks I let myself have is an hour for lunch. The biggest problem was that the company was very understaffed, the other process engineer took a new job right when I started, after 2 months still no replacement. I was replacing the project engineer who only stayed for 2 months, I was told he was here for a year in the interview (I found this out later). Second biggest issue was the owners who I worked directly with and disagreed with a lot on how they ran their business. I liked everyone else that worked there though. I was so stressed, overworked, and underpaid I had to leave. I talked with one of my co-workers recently and they haven't replaced my position yet after 3 weeks and I gave 2 weeks notice. Ouch. Sorry for all the text! I liked your video

@@purplenights1 not all business owners make smart decisions or let alone make smart investments. One of the things we see in the states right now that majority of them aren't as intelligent as they think they're. Not paying your workers a living wage where they can't make enough money to survive is a perfect example. I don't know why people like you and the rest of the owner class is shocked to hear most of the workforce quitting and have the nerve to complain you can't find people to hire. In my opinion workers should have more of a say at the company they work at since they're the lifeline for that company's profit. Workplace should be more democratic as far as i'm concerned and unionized. It has been long overdue. People got paid more on unemployment than their regular job, that's an indictment of how broken and unequal our captalist economy is. If you can't afford to pay your workers a living wage and feel indignant when your workers have concerns of how your business is run which is not benefiting them whatsoever, then maybe your business shouldn't exist. If your content with paying your workers lower than they're supposed to be then you're basically for exploitation which is highly unethical. Life is more than just working. People are human beings they're not tools that are meant to be used up and thrown away. My advice rto you is that you humble yourself and open your mind by treating others with compassion and understanding. If you do that i'm sure your productivity will increase exponentially.

I wish you luck in your endeavors. It's fascinating to see a young generation quitting en mass. Hopefully, you will be able to find something fulfilling. I never bought into the idea that someone's passion needed to be tied to making a living. The corporate world has its drawbacks, but it also has a lot of benefits. Nothing is perfect in this world.

Thank you Kerrie! I agree with you. I think there’s a balance between a job that provides for you and one that doesn’t make you incapable of enjoying the rest of your life outside of work. I think the jobs that allow that balance are different for everyone! Agree with you for sure!

As someone who chose engineering for the same reasons as you did, and also came from a family struggling to out food in the table after the USSR collapse, this really hit home. I now work as a project manager in IT, with constant deadlines and expectations to work overtime, while on vacation and sick leave, which really takes me away from my spouse and my child. This made me reconsider what makes "a great company to work in" and decide to to look for sth different

Sounds like you're basically reiterating the concept of "I don't dream of labor" but trying to set yourself apart from the crowd. I don't dream of labor is just what it sounds like. Not romanticizing WORK, the hustle culture, putting more energy into your place of employment rather than your family, your health, your hobbies. Some of the youtubers who've covered it have gone onto to be content creators but that was the path they chose to take. There's also people who are quitting their office jobs for a wfh job because it works better for their lifestyle, or they went from full time to part-time so they could spend more time with their family, or they simply decided to start setting boundaries by separating work from their free time to prevent burnout as you yourself mentioned. I dream of labor is a concept. No one is really pushing the idea that we shouldn't work but this "trend" is really challenging people to really look at the way we view work and how we can do it differently and more effectively.

When I was debating quitting my job, I watched a ton of those videos and overall did not agree with the tone/takeaway of most of the videos. Thank you for your comment though! Sounds like you made a good decision for yourself- given your interests and life goals. The company you worked for seems to have been really supportive of you as an employee as well. They offered you a competitive salary, benefits, education, etc... every person needs to think seriously about what’s important for their life - and every choice has trade offs. If you want to work 40 hours per week from home, not interact with your colleagues, avoid learning new things and be home for dinner with your family every evening then that is great - but it typically has a different monetary reward opportunity - and most corporations will not see your value as they focus on delivering shareholder value.

Hey Paige, hope you find what works for you. I am at a similar point in my career as a electrical engineer. I made a conscious choice to work for large companies. First I worked for Caterpillar and now I work for a large DOD contractor. I find the startup and contract culture to be toxic and find that working for a larger company. The work is slower paced and allows me to make good engineering decisions on my projects. Wish you the best, let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Eric! Really appreciate your insights. I think looking for slower paced work would do wonders for me. Consulting was just too fast paced and made it so much harder to balance things. I used to work in a data center and really enjoyed that work. I’ve been considering going back into that field next!

the 'I don't dream of labor' I take it as 'my job is not my life' and against all those trying to make our jobs 'family' and 'fun' when its just a job and we should have work life balance (IE constantly talked about climbing the corporate ladder). Its not about not working. I would be working, I have so much to do, I'm just over with them thinking I should be 'grateful' and 'estatic' to be working as if they're giving my life 'meaning' especially for not providing the pay and benefits to match the work. In other words, they took advantage of us, of you with no planning for how to retire or take care of ourselves if we get hurt.

I have not heard about the I don't dream of labor sentiment. I don't dream of labor either but labor is the best way I can find to do what I do dream of.

That’s awesome! That statement is actually the biggest learning lesson that came with my time at my job. We change, our aspirations change, and that’s totally okay! Thank you for sharing that and I’m so glad your hard work has paid off for you. That’s something to be proud of!

I'm currently working as a financial analyst. I'm expected to work 9 hours day or longer to get aduits done. Because of covid I've been working from home which has been great with my 18 month old. Now my company is forcing us back in the office full time.I just don't see myself continuing with the company and since I've have the luxury of being and stay at home/work from home mom I just don't feel right just going back to working in office. My anxiety has been through the roof this past month. I don't know what I'm going to do next but I have to put my family first it just sucks I have to choose whether it will be financially or physically.

The "Great Resignation" trend is far more nuanced than people simply just "not wanting to work at all".

Interesting how amazing your hard work and focus made you achieve so much and also sounded like you did not hate the journey to achieve your education. So it was the job that stopped your trajectory. I also wonder if in the past men got more of this huge work almost imprisonment. It is like the work place system definitely needs to change.

You’re right! I definitely didn’t hate getting an education and don’t regret it all. If I could say one thing I would change, it would be the ability to really understand what brings me fulfillment and what different careers are really like. I think we can really do this. I think people are consistently waking up on a yearly basis. We don't want to be slaves, I've seen people work when they believe in what they're doing. They don't feel oppressed at all. We can build a future for ourselves, and it can look better, feel better than the one the corporations want to funnel us into. believe in yourselves.

I quit mine last September and now Tradiing Options, Selling on Ebay, and Bloggings for a living and I couldn't be happier since I'm making more than I ever did at my previous job... :)

I mean intentions are good and all but name one job where the CEO isn’t slaving their workers or customers just to line their pockets? While the intention is well meaning, every business or structure always has the interest of its c-suites or the company over the customers or people. I think a better approach is to do a job that you want to do because it benefits society but still understanding the fact that you are in the end still stuck in a system that promotes bureaucracy and administration bloat. I may be wrong and I can be wrong so please let me know your take, I am not trying to be defeatist but i look at life like this, which is why Teachers deserve more pay and deserve more respect, I would gladly love to be a teacher but the way they are underpaid and under appreciated makes me not want the hassle, meanwhile there are people really passionate willing to overlook all the flaws and hardships sticking through for the better of society, meanwhile a lot of the problems stem from the bloating of sometimes useless or self serving administrators.

Hmm I think you make a good point and I agree overall. I think what it boils down to for me is two things: 1) As society progresses and technology continues to grow, people will get more and more frustrated with being worked into the ground (unless they enjoy revolving their life around their job which I’m sure some do). My hope would be one day that companies will pay their employees based off the actual tasks and the quality instead of for sitting at a desk for x amount of time. 2) I think some people are okay with working for a company like the one you described. My only question is whether they are kidding themselves into truly enjoying climbing the corporate ladder and working hard to help the company make money or whether it really is just a difference in personality. Overall, I think that having these differing types of companies is beneficial because we all are different and find fulfillment in different environments. Although I wasn’t happy at my company, I know many people who are super happy there! To me the downfall is society as a whole putting expectations that everyone should go to college, get a corporate job, and work a traditional 9-5 in a cubicle. I wish we valued trade workers, service workers, AND business/corporate workers. We need all of them to function in my opinion it’s just about allowing people to find where they fit best. Not sure if I ended up even fully addressing your response but those are my general thoughts😅

I did this 10 years ago and now I’m ready for another change. Redesigning the blue print is scary sometimes.

@@PaigeWestCo Thank you! Yes, I spent my life in the entertainment business and now that I’m older I’m finding my wants and needs to be different now. It’s a huge change for me but the first time I quit my corporate job, while it gave me security it also gave me nightmares! I was much happier afterwards. After living that life for 10 years, now I’m looking for a new change again. It’s wild, it happens a few times in life but chapters are good! Best of luck to you 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I don't think people are lazy or incompetent. I think priorities have changed. People are more interested in "experiences" and personal fulfillment. Which in theory is fine..but lack of motivation to do your best and achieve in work world is an issue. What happens when nobody feels doing anything? I think she is an exception not the majority.

I am 70 years of age; As an engineer we need to see fundamental restructuring of societal energy flow taken as $ and similar; There are few reasons to obtain 4+ years of edu if it is not to be applied in the degree field which is very common → too much to say to say it here … Wish to know what if any specialization you may have; Some are saying "the great reset" … okay then where is it?? Euro has for long invested in studies + Other nations have developed such things yet the unprecedented change is producing persons whom no longer will go 60+ hours for not enough to survive … Basically my opinion is the service jobs are what are producing the current situation

I never had an issue with that but they do monitor your chat with people! I had times where I got an automated email from them about rovers backed payment method after using words like Venmo or cash in my chat. If you’re worried I would just discuss that with your clients in person! But definitely only bring it up to repeat clients who feel comfortable with you!

Yes the health insurance piece makes it tough.. you could always save up an extra amount of money to cover health insurance costs while you try to get your feet off the ground for a new business you want to start! Just the word corporate makes me feel sad. I mean it wouldnt be so sad if they actually treated employees with respect and value. Imagine a world where you had an office job where if you could work from home, your boss would let you if you wanted to. Imagine a world where if you worked harder you would be paid MORE, get more financial benefits not more hot dogs and ice creams that nobody care about. Imagine a world where you didnt sit in a damn cubical working where everyone can literally peek over your shoulder whenever they feel like, imagine having your own office where you can shut the door when you want to be left alone and focus on your tasks, and you can open the door when you dont mind being talked to. Imagine that. probably so many more things could bring up here...

Afghanistan Will take your job

The reason why I quit my job is because most sectors are "unsafe". Unsafe meaning there is no true stability as you could be laid off at anytime which they exploit and this is psychological warfare but all in name and also off the charts harassment. I'm from the UK and, much like the States, it's working culture is riddled with bullying, hostility and psychological warfare. Not only is it not enough for them that you work 40-60 hours a week with wages which aren't increasing in line with inflation, but they need to batter the absolute fuck out of you so you're conditioned to believe that you can't survive without them and that you should "be grateful". DO NOT WORK IN: Healthcare Police Service sector in general Social work Hospitality. I worked in healthcare in the UK and you were literally treated like a criminal. I won't work again until I'm working in the EU. It's not perfect, the EU, but it's not a totalitarian capitalist gulag like the US or UK.

Hahah I see your point BUT I think that the issue is in the term “career”. If you are using the term to mean a job that requires you to climb the corporate ladder, then I agree with your statement! However, I think that’s the issue in itself. In my opinion, I think the term career doesn’t have to mean one path with one line of growth. It could be a job that doesn’t have a “growth structure” at all! I think someone’s entire life with the ups and downs of whatever jobs they choose should be the definition of the word “career”. With that in mind, I respectfully disagree with your statement. I want to work and have a job that makes a difference in someone else’s life. I want to contribute to society in more ways than just raising my children. So I am still working on my life’s career, it just may look different than the usual “career path”. Hope that makes sense😅

Why is everyone quitting their job... everyone has a couple hundred thousands dollars in their banks or they fall back on their wealthy parents? Folks living rent and utilities free? People have to eat too...even a 99 cents chicken sandwich still cost...99 cents...no restaurant gonna give you free food unless you dumpster dive. If you have a decent paying job, just grind and use that money to bankroll your other business ventures. Don't be like that one kid that quit his supposedly 100K/year job and ask Logan Paul for a job...

The Great Resignation is taking place all over the world. Americans now seem to realise that materialism isn't really the thing they're after. Life in the US is hard. Once you lose your job you lose your home. Then you end up sleeping rough. That's because everything is expensive. Here in my country life is cheap. You can live on only two dollars a day. I think the best way is to have your own business. There are other options. You can be a KZreadr. You can work online jobs. I think if you live a simple life working online is enough to sustain your life.

I did have a really good employer. No doubt about it. It still wasn’t the right job for me though. You would be surprised though, I think having a conversation is always worth it as a last resort before quitting!

It’s unfortunate this is the message you got from my video… I can only guess that you misunderstood my words. My point is that I didn’t want the money and benefits. That was the realization.. also I did not want to be in a management position hence why I quit. I was doing my company a favor by not having them put time and energy into ME for me to be unhappy and eventually leave. I left before it got that far. I hope one day the message of my video becomes clear to you because what you got from it is way off base.

@@PaigeWestCo Unfortunately he did not misunderstand your words. He basically highlighted horrible reality women face in this era of emancipation. Go to school, get a job, get a career, you go girl! And then motherly instincts get born and you end up in one of the 3 categories: Quit your job to pursue those exact things (thus company and co-workers lose on developing you and people who would sell their kidney to have had your job end up on the street unable to find a job because affirmative action; Other group of women concentrate on work and typically are brilliant at what they do and realize they are still single when they hit like 48 years old with 7 degrees and working at 3am on that project that can't wait. Final group are women who try and balance and both family and work suffer for it. we spend too much time telling people what to do... and far less time asking them what they really want from life. At 18 you don't know your head from your ass. At 23 fresh out of college your mind is clouded with this euphoria of seeing dollar signs. At 38 you are burned out and contemplating making a youtube video about how you are part of great resignation only to find that all the people making those videos are barely in their early 20s giving up on careers because reasons. When you said that sentence that Larry alluded to... I basically saw hundreds of young women who quit our office over the last 15 years for same exact reasons. You may not have meant it in your head but what you said basically is exactly why making voluntary choice for what is better for you... is exactly what causes things Larry mentioned in his post.

I understand everything you are saying but I’m not looking to have children for at least 5 more years. I’ll be finding a different job or another way to make a living still. I’m not quitting my job to jump into motherhood right now. I think your second paragraph is a much fairer assessment of the situation. I’ve had a job that made closer to 45K a year that didn’t burn me out and left me fulfilled and able to enjoy my family/life after work. This is the point I was trying to get across from my video. Lastly, Larry commented on multiple other comments on this video. His opinions were very clear and genuinely just don’t line up with any of the points I was making. I think the points you made are valid points but if you agree with Larry’s frankly rude statement about women then I have to question your judgment on this one. Thanks for the friendly debate though! I genuinely enjoy discussing the topic!

@@PaigeWestCo I only read this comment so I can't speak to what he said elsewhere nor do I agree or disagree because I have not read his other comments so I can't make an informed statement there. I obviously do not condone sexism against women if that is what he did elsewhere... BUT in this particular instance it was something that made me full stop because it was all too familiar territory. I work with engineers, so this is a topic I know first hand. I hope you and your husband both figure out what is the right path moving forward. As we navigate out of 2021 into the future, employers will be cracking that whip and embracing more with less. I survived 9 layoffs over the years and I am burned out but I also have bills to pay so as a career professional I can only recommend you this: Pick up a book called Cliffton Strength Finder. It is usually $12-15 and comes with a coupon. It is like meyers briggs test indicator on steroids. It will help steer you, wherever your life takes you. You take the test by using a code and then religiously read relevant chapters. Also for your own benefit find Andrew LaCivita career coach here on youtube. He constantly covers topics (certainly many of them are in his cajillion free videos and his $7 book) that will help you answer questions like Finding your Why. If not for career search then at least for self development.

Appreciate the book suggestion! I’ll check them out. I agree that women in the career world have many hard decisions to make when it comes to motherhood and career growth. I’m sure it’s even more prevalent in engineering. I think what it boils down to for me is just the balance between a career that pays the bills but doesn’t burn you out to the extent that I was burnt out. There are other men and women at my last job that had no issues keeping up with the demands of the job. Although I was also able to keep up and it seemed to others from the outside that everything was great, my health (physically and mentally) was declining from the stress. From that experience, it was clear that this was not the place for me even if I was doing a great job and exceeding expectations. Everyone is different. Finding a job that I can make a living from to support myself and my family while also being physically and mentally healthy is all I can wish for myself and anyone else struggling!
