Thanks "Howard" for saving me close to $400. I spent the last 2 days researching different cordless edgers to replace my 40v B&D trimmer/edger which uses the nylon trimmer line. My yard equipment is EGO ( mower and blowers) and B&D (hedge trimmer, cultivater, trimmer/edger, blower/vac). I came real close to ordering the EGO edger like you have since I already own 4 of their batteries. After watching your video and a bunch of other videos, they show that the edger clearly makes a bigger mess on the sidewalk, especially with dirt. Plus, my B&D trimmer is very light with its small 40v battery, and I only have to charge it about once a month (using it at least once a week). Plus, those EGO batteries are so heavy. I'm staying with my trustworthy B&D.

Both tools have their purposes. The edger is best for doing a new edge or edging for the first time after winter - a trimmer just won't trench deep enough and remove enough backfilled soil. A trimmer also won't cut through any woody shrub roots if you're edging a plant bed. After the initial cut with the edger, I follow up with my trimmer to maintain the edge with each mow during the growing season. A trimmer is definitely easier for ongoing maintenance. But in my opinion, a trimmer can't completely replace an edger to do that initial cut for the aforementioned reasons.

The edger is a must. Doing that kind of work with trimmer just eats up the nylon string. If only EGO distributed the edger in Canada!!!!

I keep my grass edged regularly, so I have no need of the EGO edger. However, I’m not the best at edging with the string trimmer-until recently! Even on my best day of edging with the trimmer, the trimmer can “walk” into the lawn on its own and without warning. Now? I walk on the yard side and edge from left to right. No more walking into the yard and hacking it up. The EGO 56V string trimmer with carbon fiber shaft is the bomb!! So light and so simple.

Both tools have their places. It really comes down on what kind of edge you prefer and the type of grass you have. Down south, the grass tends to grow out more than up and the edger makes cutting through the runners a lot easier than a string trimmer but a lot of People do still use a string trimmer. It really comes down to preference really in my book. Great video as always

I'll second this. It looks like he has some kind of bluegrass so that is northern or at least midwest. You can get away with a string trimmer with that type of grass. In the south if you have Bermuda, or Zoysia, the grass spreads by rhysomes (runners) that are like vines that grow under the grass and slightly under the dirt. You have to make that deep trench between grass and concrete or the runners will grow under the pavement and can actually break it from underneath or at least make it ugly. String trimmers just can't cut it.

I just purchased and used the edger attachment a few days ago. There's a learning curve with it. I also had a ton of dirt and debris like you showed but I have the brush attachment as well and it made the cleanup super super easy. Very impressed with what the brush can do.

Edging with a trimmer is difficult with the guard on and if you take the guard off, the debris kick up can be brutal. So what I like to use is an edger a few times and use a Ryobi trimmer/edger with a wheel for light edging. The Ryobi has a nice wheel that gives me a guide to follow a straight edge and is lightweight, too.

The trick is to cut the lawn last and it acts like a vacum Hoover. Edge/strim first and blow the dirt on to the grass - then bag the first bit around the edge with the mower. This also stops grass growing in the borders. Then mulch the main bit in the middle 👍

I used to cut the grass last with a Honda 21'' HRX with bagger to suck up the trimming/edging waste. However, I got a zero turn without the bagging option. I now trim, mow and then edge. I currently edge with a Stihl Edger. I'm thinking of switching over to Ego for a trimmer/edger in the future.

Great video as always. I have Ego string trimmer and edger as well. I'm not good at using String trimmer. I gues I still struggle with holding the tool, my hands gets sore and lose focus on going straight 😅 I haven't tried the edger yet. I'm clumsy and I hope I won't make too many scratches all over the sidewalk lol

Thank you. Was waffling between the EGO powerhead system and the dedicated string trimmer. This video confirmed my concerns--edger cuts typically don't look as nice, and with EGO's dedicated string trimmer, you can just rotate the handle to use it as an edger. Plus adjust height of the shaft, which apparently can't be done w/ the powerhead system.

There are advantages with both. Edger: Hard blade, clears tougher debris, guard protects user better. String Trimmer: Never working with short string, more versatile. For my lawn service, I replace my edger blade 2-3 times a month. The fresh blade just does a better job than a well rounded one.

I have the EGO select cut XP, blower, string trimmer and edger - and the Worx Trivac... My lawn doesn't have curved edges, and it has smooth concrete all around - so the Edger works just fine. If I neglect edging, I end up digging up a lot of dirt - but if I use it regularly, it's fine. I just blow the edge grass cuttings up onto the main lawn and the mower picks up all the mess when I mow. I get a good straight cut with the edger, where with the string trimmer I struggle to get a neat cut. If I had curved edges it might be different. Thanks for the video! Looking forward to an Ego cordless vac as well...

I have both tools from Ego and I use the edger on the multi-tool to go along my sidewalk. I have the same string trimmer you were using in this video and I love it but I was finding that using it as an edger wasn't doing as good a job and wasting tons of string. The spool of string lasts much, much longer when it's used just to trim, instead of to edge. I did find it took quite a bit of practice using the edger to make it look good and not clip the blade on the sidewalk. One trick I've used is to use a push broom and push the dirt back into the grass from the sidewalk and it makes the crevice created less noticeable. Another tip is to periodically get a new blade on the edger. I got my edger about 4 years and it was taking a lot of effort to use it. I bought a new blade last week and it was effortless and quick to edge the front lawn. It made a ton more mess, though. From now on, I'm going to replace the blade every other year.

In your situation, a string trimmer works just fine as your lot is angled down to the road and you have a proper curb and gutter system for drainage. My lot however is nearly level ground, meaning in areas my yard is higher than the sidewalks in places. If edging is not done on my lot, then the sidewalks will flood in heavy rains. That gap is needed for drainage to prevent flooding. Thus a situation like my own requires that it be properly edged and expose a gap, whereas a lot such as your own is perfectly fine with just using the trimmer as edging is not necessary for drainage.

I bought an EGO string trimmer hoping it would take the place of my hard blade (corded) edger. It didn't work out. I get a nice clean cut from my edger and I like the quarter inch gap I get with it. The string trimmer just wants to wander too much and gets into the grass/yard every so often. I often see pro landscape crews doing a fine job with an trimmer, I just couldn't get there. So, I went back to the edger, even though I don't like fooling with the electric cord(s).

I think the next garage sale, the edger is being put out. Last weekend I made that decision after similar to you, I did half, got frustrated at the big mess and the lack of straight line from it, and did such a better job with the string trimmer. My edger is a big old 2 and a half horsepower Craftsman corded. If it gets thick with dirt movement, I'm just going to use a flat blade shovel like my dad made be do 50 years ago. I think I got straighter lines then.

I switched from a Echo gas edger to the EGO edger. There were some subtle differences. Straight shaft instead of curved, skid plate further from center of blade, and the balance and gyroscopic nature of the new one just took some getting used to. That was about a year ago, and with my lawn service, I have had plenty of practice 😎.

If it gets gunked up it can hinder loading and feeding out. Also ONLY use the ego branded twisted 0.95" line.......ego trimmers DO NOT like anything else.
