WHY I MOVED TO THE AZORES | My Story 1

This is my story. My story about why I moved to the Azores.
My story about how I left Germany and lived in Australia and Nepal for a couple of years before finding my current home on Pico Island. It is a story full of ups and downs, struggles and joy.
I hope this story shows you the magic of life when you make scary decisions, that there is no light without darkness, that change is always a chance and that your heart knows all the answers.
I hope you enjoyed this video and I hope you know that you are not alone whereever you are at in your journey.

The Azores, Pico in particular, is a magical place and has a remarkable ability to constantly call on you. I've visited there many times throughout my life from Canada and it always seems to be calling me back. I cant explain it but when i'm there i breathe a sigh of relief and I feel as though the weights have been lifted. There is a magic to that place and hope to be there permanently soon.

I know so well that feeling Brian , sometimes it really hurts my heart i actually feel real pane , yes its hard to explain how the Azores Pico in particular never ever stops calling me back, yes it hurts so much to be far from where you were meant to be, you know that i don't even need to touch the ground of the Azores but just seeing any of the islands on approach from the window of the plane gives me such relief , once i touch ground i feel completely rejuvenated and full of life and energy and so happy to be there again.. Thanks Rahel once again you brought me to tears but good tears :)))

As a Azorean, im truly honored that you chosen the Azores to live, despite the social and geographical problems we see sometimes ourselfs as a bad place to be, despite we being proud, so it make us happy when people from outside enjoy our homeland in which we and our ancestours struggled so much to build. And great video, honestly cant relate, not from a big city, but what i can relate its trying to escape from all the stress and life obligations, you could make us feel it. Its a shame what happened at your work, this is affecting all of us and hope better times come. Cheers.

Hi Rahel - Like you say in your video, it is difficult for people, like yourself, who try to fit into a box that does not work for them. I'm from rural northern California. When I was 18 and 19, I went to Germany for adventure, to improve my German, and to explore the world beyond the box I grew up in. I worked in northern Germany and in the German Alps. I felt what you described. I did not fit in that "German" box. It was way too structured for me. Too many rules for me. I tried my best, but I was struggling with the system in Germany. I had a good time, learned way more than I could have imagined in 7 months, had many adventures that most Germans did not know were possible in Germany. Then I ventured outside of Germany. I lived and worked briefly in rural Switzerland. Then traveled throughout Spain, the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Portugal. But after a year of travel and adventure and exploration, I came back home to northern California. But when I came back "home", I felt like I did not fit in. It was like the world stopped spinning. I'm now 67, and have had about 70 different jobs and tried about 30 different businesses. I've also lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, in rural Iowa, and in upstate New York, been back to Germany/Europe, and Hawaii a few times. But I'm still living in rural, northern California after all these places and experiences. What really remains with me is memories of all the people who befriended me, who were kind to me, and who remained friends with me after all these years, and from so many places. There are so many good, kind people that cross your path when you are out there exploring the world. In 2000, my wife and I went for a month long travel/adventure through the alps - including about 10 days in the Azores. We had never been to the Azores before. We climbed ALMOST to the peak of Pico, and spent time on two of the islands, and spent some time with my wife's high school friend from the Azores who returned to retire there. The Azores is a special and unique place. It's like what Hawaii could have been before it was ruined by so much tourism and American greed. I really don't have a desire to do more traveling, but I would like to return to the Azores to do more exploring and meet more of the people there. I wish you the best. John from California

Thank you again for a video that helps me relax for even a minute or less. It’s very late, once again my pain is high and I’m trying to meditate to help to bring the pain down. I’ve spent a half hour and just couldn’t so I turned to KZread to maybe help. I remembered you channel and came here. It only took a few minuets of listening to you and watching the video, I was able to let go and relax. You have no idea how much I need this at the end of the day. I know I need to sleep to slow my body to heal. I have found it very hard this last year and a half because I was diagnosed with a medical problem. Because of COVID they could not do surgery. I was scheduled eight times but the surgery was always canceled because of COVID! It got so bad that I asked for a second opinion, but was told by doctors office and hospital that my insurance would not pay for one. Finally when they once again canceled, I called my insurance to see why the refused to pay for a second opinion, I was very angry when I was told that they had approved a second opinion over a year ago! I made arrangements to get an appointment at a university hospital. I thank God I did for I was scheduled for surgery in less than three weeks. I had surgery last week but found out that if I had waited even a few mor hours I could have died because the organ was 12 times it’s normal size and I had a raging infection that my body was not fighting. I am now recovering but the pain, sickness, and physical toll on my body has made my normal nerve pain because of a spinal injury out of control (not to mention the surgical pain). So I just want you to know how you have helped me use mediation to bring the pain down enough to fall asleep naturally. THANK YOU, I’m now going to go back to you videos and sleep.

Thank you for sharing your story with me. It means so much to me. Avenilla, it sounds like you have been through a lot. Physically but also emotionally. Being very sick is already a challenge in itself but having to deal with the difficult external circumstances and an experience of not being properly taken care of is extremely nerve-racking. I feel you! I'm so sorry that you are in so much pain. But you can be very proud of yourself for standing up for yourself the way you did and for saving your own life because you insisted in fighting for what you needed. You were taking good care of yourself and you are still taking good care of yourself by working through that pain and by figuring out ways to ease your pain. You are a very strong human being and you will get through this. I believe in you. Continue to take such good care of yourself and trust yourself. Things will get better!! Fantastic, and so inspiring! Thank you for sharing... It shows that school and education isn't necessarily the correct path. I'm similar to you and forced myself though school and hated it all, didn't do very well, had to do it again, finally scraped through but unhappy. Even ended up as a teacher myself a few years later, but turned my back on it as its just so wrong for so many young people. You've had a fantastic life so far and seen so much and travelled to some incredible places, Nepal must have been very enlightening in so many ways. I'm sorry you lost your job but hoping you get it back now things are starting to look more positive! Australia is amazing, I spent some time there, plus a few months working in New Zealand... That's where my heart belongs, so stunning and wild and so few people. Thanks for another awesome video! Dale

Hey Dale. So wonderful to hear from you again. How are things going regarding your idea about your own KZread channel? Im so sorry that you went through the same struggle in school, it makes me so sad, that we and so many others were not able to enjoy being in school, especially because it's a privilege to have just access to an education. Nepal was very enlightening in may ways. I stumbled across a lot of discomfort because there was somehow no room to pretend, life there revealed everything the good, the bad and the ugly. New Zealand is a very special country as well, the nature there must be mind blowing, what have you been working there? Best wishes to you.

Since I was a child I was dreaming to go to Peru and S.America , and after working a year in Iceland I decided it's time to move myself over there and so I did. But after 10 days over there the country went on a total lockdown so in less than a month after that I was back home where I am since then. Hey Rahel - what a beautiful video: not only because of the music, sights and sounds of Nature but also for sharing your personal life in the way that you did. I have watched the video twice now because there was so much to absorb. Asking the right question at the right time in one's life, finding an answer and then doing something about it takes enormous strength of character - one that not many people have - so a big "Brava^2" to you! It seems to me that a part of you knows roughly (or exactly) what you need to be doing so following your intuition is a good way forward. This video was cleverly crafted - from the beautiful sunrise and sunset, the night shots and general natural beauty to fitting the short clips of your locales in Australia, Nepal and the Azorean dolphins swimming into the video was brilliant. You deserve to succeed in your quest as you have so much talent.

I know in this video there was a lot to absorb, but im glad you took the time to digest it properly, sometimes thats what helps me as well to see more. So thank you for taking the time. I don't always know what i need to be doing, but i give myself a lot of time and space to dream, imagine, to explore my thoughts and let my mind wonder until a certain feeling kicks in which i know can be trusted and which i follow blindly until it solidifies into a concrete idea, vision or decision. And then i know.

I am a person who normally says a lot of things about what I notice and conclude - sometimes it might be about the way I think the efficiency of a business could be improved (out of experience not necessarily arrogance...) or it might be something/s about a person. It is always up to the recipient of such information what they do with such information. So, in your case, if those words make you think and see little things which were invisible - then I am very pleased. Ciao. I think the beauty you seek in nature is the reflection of the beauty you have within yourself. Poetry and contemplation are the great protagonists of these videos of yours and I believe also of your life. It takes a big and courageous soul to make such profound, uncomfortable and counter-current choices since a young girl to respect what you feel you are. This is the true school of life. @@thetruthhurts786 thank you for your words and suggestions. I believe that eventually you will see me talking in front of the camera but it doesn't feel right just yet and I always trust my intuition and the process of myself and my videos evolving simultaneously and knowing when the time is right. About your impression of me countering loneliness with nature I don't agree with you. From all the feelings I feel at this time in my life loneliness isn't one of them. It's true I used to feel lonely a lot when I still tried to fit in and lived a life according to society standards. I also usually often feel lonely when I'm surrounded by a lot of people which I haven't been in quite some time. About not understanding myself. I do believe that the ability of understanding myself very well is one of my strengths. I am very good in listening to my inner voice and I spend a lot of time and effort actively exploring and reflecting my inner self. I always know what I want and don't want. I actually always understood myself and I understood from a very young age that I didn't fit into societal norms but I was struggling to allow myself to live differently. But I do allow myself to live the way I want right now. About nature. Nature is my inspiration and the place where I recharge and reconnect with myself. Being in nature and in particular in wilderness and being alone is what nurtures me the most. About your wish of being part of my videos once you are relocated. Making my videos is a very intimate and deeply personal process and I prefer to be completely by myself while I create them. I appreciate a sincere and respectful exchange of impressions and opinions.

Hello Rahel, I just watched this video again. My daughter is similar to you in that she doesn’t resonate with school. She did stay in school and the last 2 years of her schooling were a dual enrollment, finishing high school and doing college at the same time. That was her choice. But, once it was over, she never wants to return to school. I find it interesting that what is called “good schools” in the USA, are schools with high level of pressure to study, to get good grades to succeed. Why? So that students can go to college and repeat the same. Study, compete, prepare. For what? So that they can get a stressful, competitive jobs which are only as good as their next project. The stress NEVER stops. I am glad that you chose otherwise. And, I respect my daughter’s decision not to continue with her schooling.
