I went back to Fujifilm... While I have nothing against the R5, Canon's lenses are huge, and I travel too much for the work I do. My clients haven't noticed any difference, and while the X-H2s has quirks, the more and more I use the body again, I'm discovering optimal settings that I need. With the weight of their RF mount L glass, it weighs about the same as my GFX kit, and with the specs on the GFX 100 ii - if I'm gonna lug around that kind of weight I'll do it with the GFX, or if I need to be light and nimble, I'll go smaller with x-mount

There were a number of things that drove me back to Canon after seven years with Fujifilm. Number one on that list was auto focus. Even now with the XH-2S, Fujifilm is still not quite caught up - though they’re definitely in the ballpark. Finally. That said, I was a little surprised after my switch back to Canon to discover that in many ways the Fujifilm bodies are more sophisticated. There were definitely features on my XT-3 that I still miss not having on my R5.

@@jrperezphotography Fujifilm _is_ generally awesome but they have fewer resources available to them. I think it is fair to say that they lack the engineering firepower to compete with Canon and Sony. That said, the AF in the X-H2S is good enough that users have no reason to feel like they're four years behind the curve. It will be interesting to see if it stays that way though. When Fuji introduces a new generation of processor, they often make a leap forward...and then stagnate while the larger manufacturers continue to progress. But Fuji is great at other things and pays attention to refinements that other manufacturers ignore. So a reasonable person could decide that Fuji's AF doesn't have to be the very best to be good enough for their purposes, and that the other aspects of the X-Series make it the best choice.

Cool video man. I'm sure the Canon's great, but to be honest I used to have problems with my various Fuji & Panasonic cameras autofocus compared to my Canon DSLR's. But my latest videos on my channel were shot with fuji X Trans 4 cameras and the autofocus worked perfectly tracking subjects every time.

Quite literally the exact situation I’m in! Canon m50 to XT4 for a year and a half now, and I just can’t rely on the XT4 autofocus as a solo creator. I’m thinking of changing to the R6 even though I love the Fuji. However I don’t use film sims anymore so I think I will survive haha. Awesome video!!!

How does the XT4 AF compare to the M50? I feel the M50 is very underrated. I shoot junior football with my M50 and get very good shots, and almost all are keepers. I usually shoot single point or zone depending on the scene and I find servo to be superb for such a cheap and small camera. Suffice to say I love my M50

Before you pull the trigger on the R7, watch the video by 3 blind men and an elephant, and why they returned the R7 they bought to be their vlogging camera. Their criteria might not apply to you but worth checking. If you could score a used R6 I think it might be a better choice.

@@AlexArmitage he does have a convoluted style, doesn’t he? But the bottom line is that yes, RF lenses for APSC aren’t well suited for vlogging and aren’t optically good enough while using EF lenses with a metabone focal reducer didn’t perform well enough and felt unbalanced with weight. Considering how much you like the image quality and look of the Fuji videos, I was wondering how pleased (or not) you’d be with an R7 and what lens you’d use to vlog considering the 1.6x crop factor.

Gear doesn't matter, until it does. And HOW it matters is so subjective. I finally got two primary bodies switched over to Sony, not because I didn't like my Canon 7D MKii for what I used it for, (heck I still use it) but because having an A7iii and A7Riii means one system, one battery type, one battery charger type, and no duplicate lenses. It makes a HUGE difference when traveling, particularly when airlines limit your carry on like when I had to be under 17lbs for Lofoten, Norway. Not to mention the day to day load for hiking. An A7Riii + 100-400gm is 5lbs lighter than the 7D MKii + 70-200 f/2.8 IS. But yeah, use what ever works for you.

Good choice Alex. One system if possible. That is one of the reasons I switched from a Fuji/Pentax combo system to Sony. Eye tracking and to have one system that does both photos and video. I loved the quality of Fuji images but their focusing system is/was miles behind Sony. Another plus was that Sony allowed me to get into the Tamron lens system for excellent glass at fraction of Sony prices and weight. My A7RIV easily approaches medium format quality without the drawbacks.

I can understand your point! I originally had an M50 as my first "real" camera, sadly it was stolen, and so instead of buying the same thing I bought the Fuji X-S10. I love my new camera, but I can relate to what you're saying here. The M50's autofocus system was just so much simpler and accurate. I never even thought about eye auto focus and assumed that was the standard across all cameras. Unfortunately not the case. It doesn't happen to me often when I'm using the camera, but I can't count how many times I've asked someone else to take a group shot, or a picture of me on vacation and the camera chose to focus somewhere else besides my face/eye. Really disappointing. Even without people, the M50 was really good at guessing accurately where you wanted focus, and I liked you could just tap the screen if it got it wrong. Cycling through Wide/Zone/Single Point is a pain. I also know what you mean about the menus. I've used this camera for nearly a year and still find myself scratching my head sometimes - the amount of work it took to tweak the camera's settings to my liking (which are fairly standard I would say) is pretty mind boggling. However, I will say that I absolutely love the image quality of the Fuji sensor, I love the way the camera feels in my hand and looks on my shelf, and find when scrolling through my pictures, that they all have a sense of soul stitched into them that I didn't get from my Canon images which all felt slightly clinical. I would say honestly the tradeoffs have been worth it - but I do hope that Fuji plans for an overhaul in Autofocus settings and their menu system someday.

This all sounds very well reasoned. Would love to hear your thoughts on the R7 if you do end up getting it. When I was a kid, my dad gave me a hand-me-down Canon film SLR and a couple janky lenses. 40 years and a handful of point-and-shoots, SLR, and DSLR bodies later, I've still never used anything but a Canon. It's not because I don't recognize the ways in which Nikon or Sony or anyone else excels, it's because I can't imagine trying to get my head around the differences in user interface/user experience.

Great reason to switch to an R7. Great auto focus less features. The X series seems to be the direction for most of addressing these issues especially the XH2S. The auto focus isn't quite Canon, but most report that it's damn close. That said I am upgrading my 4 month old XT4 for the XH2 for 1999.00 I do more stills and will be vlogging also. The XH2S can be acquired new for 2099.00 which makes it a very compelling buy. Mark Wiemel did a comparison between the Xt4, and the R7 which is interesting. He mentioned the same issues with the menus of Fuji as you did. Camera and lens in the Fujiverse also makes a difference in eye AF. The new Fuji Prime lenses are reporting stellar AF while attached to the new X series cameras. I think that the XH2/XH2S is a viable option paired with the new Primes. Gordon Lang did a very good job reviewing these cameras in real world usage. Good luck in your switch.

I am returning Fuji xt5 for the same issues after just a day of testing it: unreliable auto focus, too many tiny buttons, way too many menu features, and some of them unnecessary like choosing On/Off on " shooting without card" , or On/Off on "shooting without lens" - who would shoot without them?! Some buttons are on the back of the camera which are tiny. And the most frustrating thing is that some of the features you have set disappear after using them in spite of saving those settings. That means you have to go through all the menus again wasting your time. I had been a long time Canon user, and seeing Fuji's beautiful and crisp images, decided to try Fuji XT5. But what a disappointment! At first I was blaming myself and was trying to learn more about the menu and the camera. But nothing would help to get constant AF: randomly you would get focused images, but it would cost time and lots of frustration. Maybe, if you use only Auto Mode, then you can get good images. Then why to pay more than $2K for the camera that works well only in the Auto mode?? There are other minor negatives, which I probably could live with, but when auto focus doesn't work properly - that camera is no use for me, regardless of its great colors and sharpness. I am going back to Canon (maybe R7) with their famous simplicity in menu system, fewer buttons, and joy of use with great results.

Shooting without lens option is for people using fully manual focus/adapted vintage lenses (no electronics so the camera wouldn't recognize there's a lens attached), something that many people want when they buy Fuji for their light and compact cameras that retains plenty of physical dials. This setting is also not exclusive to Fuji, Canon and other brands have it as well; Fuji just made it more accessible for those seeking "analogue-like" shooting experience, which is one of their biggest selling point. The X-T line is more of a "Traditional" shooting camera, hence the classic camera dials instead of the modern PASM controls, it's kind of the wrong camera for your preference. You might've been a tad more satisfied had you picked Fuji's modern centric camera of the X-H line such as the X-H2 or X-H2S, which is a more familiar layout for most people coming from other brands, optimized for a streamlined shooting experience and supposedly the best auto focus they have so far (still not the best in the industry).

NO don't do it... I switched Fujifilm XT3 to Canon R6. So glad I didn't PX my camera and lenses. The R6 is a fantastic camera - tracking, af, eye selection BUT.... the metering is rubbish, always way too dark! WB is off quite alot - Fuji gets it right always, jpegs are too small - only 5mb size! too much compression on larger setting - 15mb on the Fuji. Only 1/8000 max shutter speed - Fuji goes up to 1/32,000 seamlessly from mechanical to electronic (I shoot f1.2 f1.4 wide open alot). Dynamic range not good - blows highlights more easily (much more range on XT3 with DR200 and Highlights at -2 setting - never ever blows out highlights even in jpegs - Fuji probably 2 stops better). Weight - the camera is 120g heavier and lenses much much heavier! Very disappointed with the Full frame experience IMO. I tried Sony but didn't like the colours. I'm sticking with Fuji and intend to PX the Canon and lenses to a newer Fujifilm XH2s. Photographer for 25 years experience.

I had the X T4 and sold it fast due to the wonky af. The X H2s is much much better but not as good as R6 or A7iv. Go with why you have faith in. Life's too short for unneeded stress.

I really want to love my Fuji gear but getting in the way of catching a moment is my issue. I know others can do it. And that’s perfectly fine! But I’m having second thoughts after 2 years.
