Why I'm Switching From Fuji to Sony... Again

Фильм және анимация

These are just the two main things I look for in a camera but hopefully seeing these images next to each other gives you a clearer idea about your own choices! I know this isn't super technical, but still hope it's helpful for you.
Just a note I forgot to add in the video, both cameras were set to exactly the same settings, stop, WB, everything. AND I've been practicing the removal of the magenta tone, especially in skin tones. You can see some new pics up on my insta. Been having a great time playing with my new A7iii!
Hope you got something from this video and if you have any ideas of things that you want to see in a video, leave a comment below and let me know!

Interesting post - I shot the Fuji XT3 for awhile (mainly for indoor competitive swimming) but also found that shots seemed to be underexposed whatever settings I used (changing metering/AF settings etc). I even sent shots into Fuji to see if there was a problem but apparently not. The other reason you mentioned about fast/accurate AF is another issue I found where it was not fast enough or always accurate enough. In the end I took the jump and have been with Sony for the last year and it’s been great (although more expensive). After setting up using Mark Galer’s videos I don’t need to dive into menu’s and don’t miss the dials on the Fuji. I do however miss the size and love the look of the xpro3 and small primes compared to the Sony A6x series but won’t be switching back!

Enjoyed this video. I've been a Fuji user for many years, and would like to switch to Sony for better autofocus as you mentioned. It does seem a hassle to sell my Fuji camera and 7 lenses. I'm sure I'd take a loss, especially since the Sony A7RIII I have my eyes on, is more expensive. I'm not a pro like you are. It seems like it would be very expensive changing systems every few years. I don't know, I'll have to weigh the advantages of switching.

Funny, I just did my first post covid outdoor shoot in the most amazing soft light and 95% of my shots missed focus despite all proper settings, technique, and preparation. Sharpness I can deal with but the miss rate is high with Fuji. I realized I had $4500 of Fuji gear with me and I was still fighting the software.Going through the shots in C1 I could cry because the shots were amazing but none of them pop. I love Fuji's ethos but at some point the gear does matter and I really think its time for me to jump ship.

Overall I use it because it will allow me to move up in many directions. I want to be able to use my lenses for cinema cameras and other people's cameras so Canon at this time is best for me. I traded my X-T3, 16 1.4, and 90 2.0 for a Sony A7RIII, 18 2.8, 85 1.8. Still trying to get a good feel of editing these Sony files to get a similar look. My partner is recently going for a Sony A7c. We had conflicted views on these tools but she will be giving Sony a chance. The system is larger/heavier and more expensive, but if it helps with maintaining keepers and not throwing away poses, that might make all the difference.

Picked up an XT4 because I needed something with decent video codecs. I got tired of Sony's 8 bit. However, I am very jealous of the E-mount system. The lens options are far superior, and in terms of autofocus, there's just no competition. If Sony does release a new APS-C model with 10 bit video and less rolling shutter, perhaps it'll be time for me to switch.

I tried a Fuji XT30ii, as abreak from Sony APSC and Nikon FF. As much as it was a good looking camera and produced nice colors, the exposure and focusing were inconsistent. It would pick up very high ISO in auto ISO compared to Sony. I did side by side comparisons of the Fuji XT30ii with Sony A6100 and A6600 and the SOny had at least 1 stop less noise, it was sharper, and the focus always spot on. The lock on AF is way more advanced. I wanted to love the Fuji, but the usability and reliability were underwhelming. The Nikon Z system, even the Z50 have a more straightforward menu, usability and nice colors. The downside of Nikon is fewer 3rd party lenses, no Tamron. A6600 and A6700 are way more advanced than the XT30ii in many ways. The A6100 is also much more reliable. The Fuji menu is so deep and nested, somehow worse than Sony. With the Sony now I lower the magenta and purple in Lightroom. I adjust the Auto WB a little. The Fuji def has better auto WB than the Sony. But all these aspects can be fine tuned.

Interesting with excellent points. Good to see you don't follow the full frame hype. I found your lens choice in the comments - hearing more about them at some point would be great. I also love to use the same primes on different sizes of sensors. Some reviewers are most critical about FF lenses on apsC. If looks count more than corner sharpness on test charts the difference is less relevant.

  • @flickcine

Yeah it's a bit of a strange switch for me. It's partially to push myself and partially for the great autofocus. Was awesome to see things together to assess the difference at a standard setting. Sure! I am planning on a video on zooms vs primes for video and photography but that will wait until I'm able to go to a rental house and hire some big toys! Never been fussed about using APS-C or Full Frame. Only thing it changes is the way you think about framing and focal length choice. People get so caught up on that thing thinking that one is better or professional and the other isn't. So silly.

There is something about the way it renders bokeh that I just love. Very creamy but also grainy (in a good way). Eventually you will want the 135mm 1.8, the lens renders beautiful photos! It’s just a beast! The 70-200 is a different beast too. I feel like I never have to touch the contrast slider when editing a photo taken with it. Anyway, I’m happy for your new journey with Sony. I was wondering if Fuji is any better in terms of UI. Really miss my Nikons in this respect. Also, you seem to be jumping back and forth between APS and FF without even mentioning if this is important to you.

As you have not really mentioned stills on your channel and now mostly talk about portraiture, I wonder, is the Sony not to be used for your video work? Great comparison! Funnily my subjective feeling to Sony is very different - even if I agree on all your points! It's at best a love hate relationship with my two old A7 cameras and the A6100. Originally I got the bodies for old Leica glass. And I liked the results, even if I found the focus assist tools on cheaper Lumix bodies (G2, GM5) far better. As the offer for modern lenses is wide and includes affordable ones I got more glass. The Tamron 35mm macro and a TTartisan 35mm f1.4. As they are so different in character I enjoy using them on ff bodies side by side. Recently I compared them to the Nikon Z50 and coming from Nikon dslrS found the Z-mount user experience so far superior. AF is slightly behind Sony for portraits, better in other shooting situations, I found. It's basically 3 issues I have with Sony, all of them severe. - dust on sensor far more frequent than on both Lumix and Nikon Z, not to mention dslrS - confusing menu interface. In real life shooting situations, if I want to change anything beyond the quick menu I often get it right on all Nikon's, rarely on Sony - with my only native Sony lens, the 85mm f1.8 the jpgs are ugly, particularly in the out-of-focus zones. Over-eager imagine improvement algorithms. As I am keen on shooting and hate to spent more than 20 seconds on editing one photo, I find myself rarely using the Sony lens. And enjoy how beautiful the images from my Samyang / Rokinon 85mm f 1.4 are. So easy to use on F and Z-mount, as it's got electric contacts

if you had to throw away an entire pose, this lead me to believe there could be couple of reason. 1. You had a faulty/defective camera or lens 2. Incorrect camera setting 3. Lack of experience and skill to get your AF right with your gear. In 2021, you can walk in to a camera store and pick a camera randomly from any brand (Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Canon or Fuji) and they will all have excellent AF to cover the needs of 95% of photographers, so I think the focusing issues you were experiencing were most likely not related to Fujifilm camera, especially for portrait photography.

Don't know about photography, but for film makers SONY A6600 IS A PIECE OF GARBAGE released to fool all the APS-C users. Let me explain. Sony a6600 released at 2019. It has the same old outdated sensor from 2015 (this sensor was in a6100), the same old codecs, the same bitrate, the same menus, the same terrible rolling shutter, the same color tech, no 4K 60p, only 8 bit , the same poor quality at HD , everything is the same like the a6500 back from 2016... even the micro usb is the same... Ok ok, the put a new plastic mechanism to flip the LCD (which is again the same as 2016) a new battery and yeah a more advanced AF system.. other than this nothing... So, what Sony did ? it took 75% of old parts from the recyble bin and made a new camera with old-outdated parts... easy money right ? On the contrary , 1 years earlier, at 2018, Fuji released the XT-3 , with great quality both at 4K and HD, new color tech, 4k 60p 10bit for first time etc. 1 year earlier right ? Now, Fuji released XT-4 which is even better than XT-3 and Sony what ? oh yeah.. Sony at 2021 released a new piece of garbage, the ZV-E10 and guess what ????? again with the same old sensor back from 2015, the same quality, the same old codecs, the same terrible rolling shutter.... Conclusion : DO NOT BUY any APS-C Sony Camera for video.... Lets hope that Sony will stop fooling APS-C users and will make a REAL NEW camera.
