Why I'm Sick Of Hiking Gear Reviews

Ah, the 'gear review'.
Watching and reading and wondering, taking in the brand messaging, asking 'is my gear good enough?'.
I've had enough of the gear review narrative. Both as a creator and as a consumer. This video shares my perspective and advice.
Beginners are most likely to fall prey to the hidden sales tactics of gear reviews online. A bit rich of me to suggest a video of mine that you could argue is a gear related video, but I stand behind my advice and suggestions. Check it out if you'd like: • A Beginners Guide To B...

Lots of sense in this video, thank you for filming it. I’d also add to the discussion the environmental impact of all this production and consumption, and that gear talk takes so much oxygen out of room there is not much left for nature protection and conservation talk.

Gear is shiny, new and exciting. The perfect topic to exploit online. As you’ve stated, there are much more important topics, and I personally want to help people develop themselves in the outdoors to a point where they don’t need gear advice.

loved this man, really appreciate it. Was freaking out about spending way too much money, but bought some cheaper stuff that's a bit heavier and going out next weekend.

So much good budget gear available nowadays, try not to overthink the decisions. Day hiking is a great budget activity, I do a lot of overnight walks as day trips & punch out the distance.

Certainly they can help, glad you’ve had a different experience than I have. There are lots of people who make good reviews but many more who do not.

Thanks for making this. In researching gear for my goal of climbing some 6000’ers in the Himalayas I feel both overwhelmed and disgusted at the prices of some of these items of clothing. Seems like you have to have a bucketload of money to buy decent outdoor gear and it makes the outdoors somewhat inaccessible for those less fortunate than me. Not to mention these professional outdoors influences promoting products and setting up unrealistic expectations and making people feel like they MUST buy the latest and greatest things.

It’s certainly important to buy high quality important items - but more so for your situation wanting to break into mountaineering, not so much regular hiking. Gloves, warm layers, a good sleeping bag - the rest is fairly low consequence or hireable. But again, your own judgement is better than the guru influencers who don’t have to worry about prices…

@@betterhiking 100% you do get what you pay for and if your life depends on it then you want to make sure it’s made well and is good quality. I see so many instagram influencer’s (who are no longer the average relatable person) wanting to climb mountains for the gram for clicks, views and to make more money from brand deals to make normal people feel like they MUST have the latest and greatest of everything. Capitalism has well and truly infiltrated the outdoors.

@@betterhiking this is why I like your channel. It’s useful, honest and you aren’t trying to make people feel like they need the latest and greatest things, not to mention you are relatable

I try and showcase the reality of what I do because I want to help people do the same thing. Was the reason I started making videos and I have to be careful to ensure it always remains the case.
