GEAR I PACK FOR A DAY HIKE - WINTER

In this video I am sharing with you all that I take with me on a day hike in winter. It does not include any video or photography equipment I take as I wanted it to be just hiking/walking specific. I hope it helps give anyone new to hiking some ideas of what to take - or even some new ideas to those already hiking!

The Lifesystem looks to be the same as AMK Heatsheets. They are very good. I like that you prepare to help others. As an old Eagle Scout and Scout Master, I still do the same thing. I suggest that you look at a stainless steel cup, with folding handles, that will slip onto the bottom of your water bottle. This will allow you to build a fire and heat up a pint of water. If you also carry a couple of oatmeal packets and a spoon you can eat if you get stuck. A book of matches in a sealed bag and a tealight candle will give you a lot more options too. A very good video. Our kits evolve with time and must be reevaluated every so often. Good Luck, Rick

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Because you hike alone, you really should have a good emergency kit incase you have a bad fall. Sometimes it will take time for help to arrive so you want to be comfortable. I've seen cases where the dispatcher sent the rescue to the wrong town. That caused a several hour delay. Good Luck, Rick

Excellent video Mary, well done. Very comprehensive kit. A couple things I carry in addition. One is a compact mirror my girlfriend gave me. It is small, lightweight, and folds to protect the mirror. I have used it several times to get a gnat or something out of my eye with a q-tip. Which I also carry 6 . You can reflect light in your eye to see better as well. Another item is a small tube of superglue. For repairs or even closing a wound or a hangnail. Best!

Wow a lot of items fit in that pack! I know you mentioned looking into a 30L pack. I have a 25L Red fox racerwire day pack that is the most comfortable and functional day pack I've owned so I wanted to share a link for it. Also a Gregory Jade 33 link below. us.redfoxoutdoor.com/products/racer-25-wire The RedFox racerwire 25L carries weight well and is very comfortable with an arch mesh to keep back dry but it might be a better summer pack? It has a back flap pocket and an outer zip pocket. The outer zip pocket looks small in the image but in actuality it goes deep down. The side pockets are stretchy. The pack has an inner zip pocket and water bladder pocket. I bought it because I needed a day pack that could comfortably carry 5L of water for So. CA day hiking plus food and some gear. I believe Red Fox has big discounts in November(Black Friday sale). The most I would carry in it would be 17 lbs. I don't recommend the 20L racerwire. I tried other RedFox larger daypacks but they were not as comfortable/functional. If I had to buy a larger day pack for winter hiking I'd try a Gregory Jade 33. I did test out a Jade 38 and 53 at REI for backpacking and loved them both except Jade 38 side pockets not easy access as Jade 53. I kept the Jade 53 backpack (it has a dialed in, easy to adjust torso adjuster panel and free float suspension system). It is the best fitting and most comfortable backpack I ever owned. Gregory packs have beautiful colors and include the rain covers. They have lots of useful features. But REI does not always sell the most current version so if you get one you should get one with the free float hip suspension it's awesome. I believe the Gregory Jade 33 has that free float suspension system too. Gregory has sales in November too. Good luck! www.gregorypacks.com/packs-bags/day-packs/jade-33-1115JAD33.html?dwvar_1115JAD33_color=Poppy%20Red&cgidmaster=jade#src=google&gclid=Cj0KCQjw59n8BRD2ARIsAAmgPmK2_SwWqZu7tiqpKLOZTJnENjkAbyum8Yh0x-Ck7j9r7N_7ZggNUPEaAiKEEALw_wcB&start=1
