It's so refreshing to see someone who understands how hard it can be adopt in this country! I tried to go through a rescue for my dog and everyone was telling me how difficult it is and in the end we got rejected for VERY random reasons (lots of people including our trainer) thought were weird. I want to train mine as an ESA once he is old enough. We got pics from the first week he was born, met him at 4 weeks, brought him home with all paperwork etc at 8 weeks :) My baby is happy and healthy and getting our puppy was the best decision we ever made and no one will tell me otherwise. (FYI my baby is a golden retreiver!)

It’s surprisingly hard to adopt in the US as well. I’ve been rejected for not having a fenced yard, my dog not being altered, and “having too many dogs”??? The only thing I could figure out for the last one was where I took family members dogs to the vet under my name. I still don’t think that’s a good reason to reject my application if I’m taking care of them all. 🤔 I just gave up after that.

Yes! I believe in buying from REPUTABLE breeders as well as adopting. When you want a dog for a specific purpose with specific temperment, work drive and others, you would want a good genetic background and personality. Also, as someone who aided in training service dogs during college, I know that those dogs do not think of it as work like humans do. I fully support you Emi!!!

Adopting is surprisingly difficult, shelters seem to find everything little thing to nitpick about. Years ago, me and my family tried to adopt a super friendly dog who had been there for awhile. She was happy, sweet and great with all of us. But we were rejected because my brother was "too young". Other shelters we've been to didn't even give us a reason as to why we were rejected. Adopting, while it's ideal. It isn't always possible. Adopted animals can sometimes have behavior issues that you need time and patience to deal with, have undisclosed health issues, etc. While getting an animal from a trusted breeder tend to have less issues. People really shouldn't try to make others feel guilty over not adopting, it's just a messed up thing to do.

Can’t wait to see them come home 😭❤️ I think the loudest people are the ones who have never even volunteered or done anything for rescue dogs, as those who have know the reality. One dog comes to mind, *one*, that I was shocked to see in the rspca and that was a young (just over a year) old and very well mannered springer spaniel. She was gone the next week. Well mannered and bred dogs do not need rescuing, there’s often breed-specific rescues that also snap them up with a waiting list of people wanting a rescue. The dogs I saw were never well rounded or well bred, they were lab mixes with bad knees at the age of 4 which meant they couldn’t walk, older staffies who were lovely but still just old and not everyone wants that, German Shepard mixes with red cards on because they were not friendly, husky mixes who needed two people to walk them because they pulled so hard and couldn’t be left alone in the day as they’d chew up your walls. Rescue dogs are great if you don’t mind either a rehab training project, an older dog, or one with health issues but I wouldn’t ever encourage “normal” families to go for one over a breeder, knowing full well I probs wouldn’t want one either 😅 Greyhounds were always dead nice though, if not terrified of their own shadow, if someone even wants a huge greyhound 😂

Thank you for saying that there's not one specific breed that you have to get in order to have a service dog, I didn't realise that it applied to all kinds of dogs. It makes sense that sometimes they need a specific purpose, energy and lifestyle to suit the person and I think that is lovely. I wish you the best on your journey with your puppy. When getting a SD usually you wanna go with a puppy cause you want to start right away on training not just on the basics but working on alert commands and actions. Training a SD/medical alert dogs is long and intense and doing it from a pup is most often easier. I have GS/Lab cross who is going on three and he has been out of training for 6 months. Cause he is my SD.

I’ve adopted nine dogs in my life and my current dog is from a breeder because I really wanted a specific breed and I wanted access to that health history. I’ve loved every one of my dogs, but they’ve had hip dysplasia complications, mega esophagus (resulting in aspiration pneumonia), epilepsy, and multiple cancers, and that was exceptionally HARD. So when I was ready for another dog, I searched for breeders who focused on health and temperament and a situation where I could reach out to other owners from previous litters and get their feedback. I was very fortunate to find a lovely breeder and get my current boy. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with buying responsibly. You just have to be responsible. Also, my dad is from Nova Scotia and I have a soft spot for Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers ❤ they’re lovely working dogs and I’m so excited for you 😊

Ive adopted a few dogs and other pets, but when it came to my service dog I tried two rescues that (the rescue) lied about several things, and they turned out to have too many issues and needing to be retired very early. So after that I wanted a specific, clean slate, breed I could get as a puppy and train and know what experiences and temperament its had since 3 months old when he came home. So far he's been my absolute best service dog, cause he was my dog that I trained and that I raised. Ive adopted another rescue dog since then, but she is purely a pet, an elderly chihuahua. Backyard breeders and overbreeding are a major issue, but there are reasons someone may want a dog from a good breeder. It just requires some knowledge and research to make sure you are doing so responsibly.

The pre-dog mum purchase excitement is real! 😂 I was exactly the same when I got my first dog back in 2020, so many cool enrichment toys to buy, and I’m still buying more 3 years on 😅 I had small animals growing up and into adulthood as I was never ready for a dog despite coming very close to owning several throughout my life. I’m very glad I waited and I’m so happy to hear that you’re getting your dream dog! It’s such an exciting time, to have your childhood dream come true in the form of a four legged companion. She will change your life in the best ways ❤ I can also vouch for shop responsibly, as rescue dogs really aren’t for everyone. I had a really difficult time adopting a dog despite meeting all the requirements, and eventually I found my soul dog who I adopted from Romania. He’s done so much for me and I feel like I’m giving him the life he deserves, but he isn’t without his challenges when it comes to fear based reactivity. I can see a huge difference in rescue dogs vs a well bred dog, as we inherited a 7month old pup from a family member that passed away, and the difference in behaviour and temperament is very obvious. Both have their pros and cons, but I will be getting my next dog from a responsible breeder - if I can find one!

No judgment here. I just want to throw this out there. To brag on my dog a little. I accidentally wound up with a rescue pitty from a horrific situation. I also have tachycardia episodes (225 resting). Stress induced. I trained this dog at home to lay on my chest when I'm having an episode. She preforms perfectly everywhere. We had to go to the er on Christmas Eve 2 years ago and this dog got barked at in the waiting room by a giant German shepherd, had her toes run over by the circle spinning chair thing, and had 8 medical ppl bending over me poking their elbows in her, and she never even flinched. She is trustworthy in any and all situations and rock solid in her training. 2 summers ago, I was hiking with my kids when 2 greyhounds (yes, greyhounds) attacked her. She didn't draw one drop of blood from those dogs. She just stood there and cried while I beat them off of her. A dog's a dog, and I'm so glad God sent me mine.

As a cat owner, if I ever got another dog I just don't know if I could trust getting a rescue dog. I've heard too many horror stories of "cat safe" dogs that then killed the cat in their new home. There's also a lot of unethical rescues around that lie about their animal's past history and adopt out dangerous dogs. I would definitely adopt a cat, though. My dad adopted a cat from the RSPCA last year and she's been wonderful.

I'm a big believer of both adopt or shop responsibly and adopt don't shop - which one I stand by depends heavily on what species we're talking about, and sometimes their breed as well. For example - I *heavily* stand by adopt don't shop when it comes to hamsters, as I don't believe that there any truly ethical hamster breeders here in the UK (and if a breeder claims they're ethical, chances are that their standards just aren't high enough). Whereas with dogs, I'm a bit of both - it depends on the breed. With brachycephalic breeds, I just don't think it's possible to breed them ethically right now due to how malformed they are (except if the breeder is trying to better the breed, like Hawbucks French Bulldogs) so for those I would say adopt don't shop - whereas with a much healthier breed like the beagle, I'm fine with adopt or shop responsibly. It frustrates me when people are strictly one or the other - it depends *so* much on each individual species and breed imo

You worded this really well and it sums up how I feel! I’m against unethical breeds or varieties that have serious health complications being bred, unless they are one of the few breeders trying to breed away from those traits. For mice in the U.K. I’ve very much become adopt only as I’ve yet to experience any mice from breeders having any benefits and some of their practices don’t sit right with me. Same with rabbits, some species that are bred like rats can be done while their social and enrichment needs are met, most rabbit breeders keep them singular, in a hutch or small wire cage with just a water bottle and I’m not for that. My dog breeder always says when they were considering breeding dogs she did not want to breed a breed that was already filling shelters, only a healthy breed that wasn’t very common (and I do think breed preservation is important, if we love dogs why wouldn’t we want healthy dogs to stick around?) and I very much respect that. Some very common dog breeds like spaniels and labradors are really over bred at the moment. Probably an unpopular opinion but I think they should put a pause on breeds like Staffies because they make up a good 80% of dogs you see in U.K. rescues and there just isn’t a demand for them.

@@Emiology I absolutely agree - I *love* staffies to death and would absolutely love one of my own, but I don't think I'll ever get one from a breeder due to just how many are in rescues currently. Same goes for rabbits due to the current rabbit crisis. There are just *so* many different things to factor in, which is why I find it so frustrating when people are strictly adopt don't shop or adopt/shop responsibly - I just find it so much more beneficial to be a bit of both. I absolutely love that your dog breeder put so much thought into choosing what breed she wanted to contribute to - I wish more breeders had that mindsent (for all animals)!

Just want to say that using a silicone tube to train how to walk on a loose lead is AMAZING. I will never use anything else. My favorite thing to put in them is a powdered dehydrated dog food that I rehydrate with water. You can choose the consistency that works best with the tube by adding more or less water, it's healthier than many other liquid treats, and my dog is obsessed with it!

I love these dogs, been admiring them for years. Got to see some at crufts this year. Deffo on my I want list. I have rescues and bought (responsibly) dogs. My youngest a Welsh springer I reared myself with his litter mates because I used to mind his mum. He's also a working breed but more calm than most he's being trained as a reading assistant dog as they definetly need a job to do. But also we are lucky to live in a great place for dog walks and hikes. He has lots of energy but he also likes to snuggle up after a walk, he's so loving and clever. He's already earned his bronze. Yes I too weighed things up I didn't plan on another dog. But the fact I reared the pups, exposed them to lots of sensory things from tunnels and when older the paddling pool and had lots of kids and people calling to mix them. So much work and not for the faint hearted but every single pup turned out wonderful.

So I'm from the US and I was looking for a dog that could travel with me on my Semi as I'm on it for 6 month streches before I come home for about a week and was unable to find a smaller low energy dog in shelters, so I went with a breeder and got a French bulldog/Boston terrier cross. Got him the day he turned 8 weeks old and by the end of the week we were on the other side of the country. He spent his first month on the truck with me. Now 4yrs later his favorite place is still the passenger side seat of my truck. He's 100% potty trained, listens to all commands no matter where we are and when I am home if time allows I take him to the cancer ward of the local hospital and he's very much loved there by both and staff as he's very gentle, funny looking, and does a few tricks as long as the person giving the commands has treats. If I could've found a dog that would've fit my lifestyle on the truck i would've adopted but never had any issues with someone getting an animal from a breeder

But only last month adopted a pomeranian taking our dog count to 4 😁 My dachshund did however destroy a Sodapup cupcake toy in about 5 mins but he’s an absolute nut, my friends with dalmation/labradors have had no problem with their pups destroying them tho so I suppose it’s dependent on the dog😂🙈 And when the puppy teething arrives I liked to have LOADS of teething toys so the pup has a higher chance of choosing to chew a bone over the furniture or me🤣🤣🤣 Can’t wait to watch your puppy journey!🥰❤️

We got our third dog two years ago. I had wanted a Border Collie since I was a child. We live on a farm, and we had specific wants with a dog. We went with a purebred, papered Border Collie. I see absolutely nothing wrong with getting a purebred if that's what you want. If you're looking for specific qualities, or you just love a breed and want to support it. 🤷‍♀️ I don't regret getting out newest dog, and I'd do it again.

  • @Emiology

Unfortunately a lot of border collies in rescues have been purchased by the wrong people and they have the highest number of behavioural / stereotypical behaviours because they don’t always thrive in a normal home environment and although many of them would only thrive in a farm environment I can see how rescuing them could be tricky and even risky for farm animals you may have already 😞

  • @ellens.bookishcollection

@@Emiology It is very tricky, and we felt it was a gamble on any rescue border collie we brought home. This way, we knew for certain she was a purebred and we could see the temperament and working drive history of her lineage. If I had tons of time, and I didn't have the risk of livestock safety and the potential of a dog just not being good around animals, I would definitely consider a rescue. Maybe in the future. I think if breeders were more selective on where they had puppies go to, we wouldn't have all of the problems with rescues of the breed.

I have a rescue dog and a purebred puppy, my previous (and first) dog was also a rescue. I often like having a mix of both rescue animals and responsibly bred. I breed pet rats ethically and responsibly as well, but according to the strict adopt-don’t-shop people that makes me the devil. 😂 I loved my first dog but she had some serious baggage I didn’t want a repeat of. My current rescue is very easygoing, but she was rescued from abroad as the type of dog that fits me is simply rarely found in shelters. I’m not up to the stress of applying for a dog with 20 other people only to not get picked over and over again. If a fitting dog even appears in the shelter. 🥴 The puppy I have now is if a breed I researched all the way and fits me very well. I might rescue in the future again. The breed of my first dog (Malinois) is still in my heart but they can be very challenging!

I think we can all just agree on "don't support bad breeders/breeding mills". Getting an animal from an (independent) propper breeder that cares more about the animal than the money, I don't think really fits the word "shopping". Nothing wrong with going thru a reputable breeder for a dog, especially when the dog is intended for a working purpose. The greater issue is irresponsible breeding and people throwing dogs away when they no longer 'fit their lifestyle'. Supporting responsible breeding is as important as supporting rescue efforts and education on good animal husbandry. If I want a pet, I'll adopt, and gladly deal with whatever additional training I may need to do. But if I want a working dog, I'll find a reputable breeder.

I've been saying it for years: idealily all dogs should come from breeders! In a perfect world no dog would end up in a shelter, there'd always be someone to take them in. But we can't and never will live in a world without shelter dogs, so if you're in a position where you can take in a rescue dog absolutly, that should be the first option any hopful dog parent considers. But we need to be realistic, it's actully very hard even with all the fur babies waiting around for a loving home, it's hard for a lot of people to find a suitable rescue dog. The puppies go first, so you could be waiting years if you're set on a puppy which is valid (some people want the whole experience and the reasurance that they aren't taking on a dog with an unknowaable past), smaller dogs are also snapped up quickly as they suit most homes. So the vast majority of dogs you'll be left to choose from are either: big dogs, high energy dogs, dogs with behavioural problems, elderly dogs, and dogs with health and speciel needs. All amazing dogs, but not practical for most people. Everyone finding the dog they like and can realistically handle in shelters is as impossable as a world without shelters. We need to be educating on finding genuine, ethical breeders as the second option instead of shaming people. The demonisation of breeders is causing more halm than good when if we put our energy into fighting bad breeders and poor education, the dogs that end up in shelters at the end of the day might end up being better suited to the people searching for a 'new' pet. i.e Fighting for dogs breed to breath means less dogs with medical problems in shelters not being taken home beacuse people can't handle them, or even being dropped off in the first place. Breeders is where the cycle starts, so unless you're literally arguing dogs should stop being breed all together and go extinct, you need to decide if you're going to demonize all breeders the same or put effort into distinguishing the good from the bad. Bad breeders; breeding sick dogs, not educating and vetting their clients, not rehoming puppies after the sale if something goes wrong, is why there are so many rescue dogs. That and owners breeding from their dogs irresponsibly beacuse there are no hoops to jump through to sell to puppies when there should be. It's not as black and white as the slogan implies. Adopt, don't shop, is all well and good until you can't adopt or you need to shop but you don't know how to responsibly. Going to a good breeder is like choosing the reusable option, adopting is like recycling. The most eco friendly option is the one you already have. If you can offer a dog that already exists a forever home, you should, but if you can't you need to make sure that your actions will be setting up future doggos for a life of love and joy because the breeder you choose will take that money and put it back into whatever they're already doing.

  • @lorelei9958

I came across some WILD listings tonight. Here, I'll share my journey, lol. Looking for a small dog for my mom. The contingecies for one place was longer than a CVS receipt and they required MULTIPLE home (no apartment) visits and would only adopt within 20 miles. Adoption fee for a 9 (NINE) yr old dog: $1,500 (not in a high COL area, lol). Another said you had to have NO children, NO other pets, NO elderly, LARGE yard, NO pool, be ONE SINGLE PERSON, not usually have guests, you have to work from home, not go out often, be a clean freak (allergies & it chews up/eats everything in sight), not wear shoes in the house & walk lightly, prefer you are a petite person (the dog was stepped on once I guess and injured), fully fenced in with a fence at least 4 feet high and (not joking) no gaps anywhere in the yard bigger than 1.5". One and a half INCHES. Not looking to adopt a rat, lol. This dog was also VERY high maintenance with a lot of expensive meds, barks constantly, doesn't like people, very anxious, always needs to be near you, can't be crated or put in a room without you in it, can get "bitey", doesn't travel well so you can't even take it out in the car, not potty trained nor leash trained, doesn't listen to commands, hates walking. Over $1K fee. They're essentially looking for a young, single, well-off, small statured, work-from-home, agoraphobic, clean freak, non-shoe wearing ballarina with a large yard like fort knox who is also willing to deal with this dog's issues. Oh, and this unicorn person ALSO has to be within 40 miles. Shame, my mom was a small dog breeder years ago and she was very caring, knowledgable, & an excellent trainer. On the breeder side, saw a $17,000 dog also. Parents had "show experience". LMAO. Hadn't even won a show. Which is fine, but don't brag about just entering one. Also doubt they even did because they clearly overbred these dogs to be WAY too small. One of my mom's dogs was such a good "specimen" of the breed that he won best in show with my 12 yr old sister as his handler (NOT Westminister, but the people are all the same and the dog names are still crazy, lmao). A wealthy couple from Japan offered my mom $30K for him (in the early 90's). Even with this, she STILL only sold his puppies for $700 (cheap for the 90's, these days they are $5k+). Because she's not a price gouging POS. Point is, actual champion bloodlines for the breed of this $17K dog is about $5-6K, and these ppl are trying to charge 3 times that, for a dog with a lifespan of only 7-9 years. No wonder they still have it at 5 months old🤬 Please take that as a PSA, if you didn't know: MOST (not all, but really like 95% these days) "teacup" dogs were irresponsibly bred to be that way and have MANY, EXPENSIVE health problems, and this breeding has shortened their poor little lifespans greatly. Most "teacup" breeders you see are NOT responsible breeders, they are the complete opposite.
