Why I Love The Olympus EM10 Mark ii

Why I Love The Olympus EM10 Mark ii
I've made a fair bit of noise over the last several months about my switch to Micro Four Thirds and how much I like the system, but even after getting the EM1 Mark ii and now the Lumix GH5, the EM10 mark ii is still my favourite for street photography and every day shooting.

In at least one commentary about Vivian Maier's work, they noted that the waist-level finder on her Rolleiflex TLR gave many of her photos a unique, low-angle perspective that she used to good effect. A tilt-screen like the EM10ii's gives you that same perspective in digital.

I love mine too. It became maybe my favorite camera after a few weeks shooting with it. Great ergonomics, no crippled features, lots of metal, amazing IBIS. One of those devices that were too good for their time and the manufactur backpedaled on with successors. Ordered a second one to keep as a spare. My Fuji gear will co-exist but MFT is such a great system with many lens options.

Your video inspired my to go pick one of these up. I found a mint Mark iii body and picked up an Opteka 50mm F2 lens for it. Should have it this weekend. Really needed something for the street photography. My EOS 7Dmark ii is kind of a tank. I also like the stealthiness of the Olympus viewer. Great video.

But now I'm using it because I just love the images it produces and I love the feel of it. Just picked up an Em10ii today, with kit lens and extra battery, plus a bag, very low SC, for the equivalent of 150 quid. Owned one several years ago, decided I needed to reacquire one! Seeing as I have a lot of vintage glass and M43 adaptors for using with my GH4, they all now double across with the EM10ii.

I bought am EM10 mk1 a couple of years ago for under £100 to complement my GH5 which I'd had for a while. It takes great images but it's a bit battered and worn and wouldn't cope with bad weather which can happen very quickly here. I bought and EPL8 which is even more compact but is rarely used then last year I bought anEM10 mk3 for about £175 which looks like brand new. I find I only use my GH5 when I need it for video and then I will take photos with it as well. I love my EM10, it does everything I need and more.

Great video David. I've had and sadly sold the EM10-II. Wow, do I regret that... currently looking for another one! I have the EM1.3 and OM5 but the EM10-II was just so pocketable (even more than the OM5) and despite owning so many FF, APS-C and MFT cameras over the years, the EM10-II is definitely my favourite! I thought I wanted the flip out screen on my tiny walkabout, hence selling it and getting the OM5, but there have been several times since selling that I miss the tilt instead of flip out and the even smaller body, especially for street photography. Matched with DXO Pure Raw 3 the EM10-II produced amazing results for it's side and age. Can't wait to get another one. Mine was silver and I'll pick up another silver one if possible.

I have this camera because the other cameras were hurting my neck and causing back ache . This little gem has two primes and a kit lens . For wide angle I switch to my phone . The two primes work great for portraits or street work . So, what is there to dislike ? In a word : nothing ! I travel light and use a Billingham digital bag . The primes are sigma 30 and 60 mm 2.8 lenses . I preferred walkabout focal length in full frame terms is 55mm, as I find 50 a little too wide . I shoot mostly jpeg and process everything in Snapseed on the phone . Easy to post and forward on . I create several photo books each year. I found your discovery of this camera had been similar to my own . I had liked the camera when it first appeared and procrastinating about buying it for sometime . When I did , I bought it direct from Olympus Germany at half price with an extended warranty of three years . It is hard to resist a bargain and the camera bag , the prime lenses were all gifts . Again , another bargain . The key thing I like most is the tilt screen . I have no interest in video and using a swing out articulated screen . If there were something I would have included in making the camera and it would have been phase detect focusing . All cameras should have that as standard . The camera has loads of added extras included , but I do not use the art filters . What the camera also does well is setting up the controls for key functions . With the twist of the dial I have monochrome and it’s next to P dial . I could go on, but you should have loads of material to make many more videos on this topic . Finally , the menu are not difficult once you know how to use them . Olympus should have produced a hardback handbook for the camera , but a digital one works fine. Thank you , once again , for making these videos .

With some hindsight, I have two regrets in regards of the M43 system, the first is that I looked down my nose on the GF1 back in 2009 and instead bought a Pentax K7, which lived most of its life with me on a shelf, and that I disregarded the E-M10MkII back in 2015, when I finally got into the system. That said, the GX7 i bought then was a very nice camera in and by itself and offers a logical and very easy menue system, something none of the Olympus models do. I even sold my first foray into the brand. a TG-6 in disgust after just 4 months, and that had a "light" version of it. It took two years of fiddeling with a second hand Stylus1S and a dirt cheap deal which I bought based on the lens that came with it, before I grasped the menues enough to be less than red faced bothered with them.

Yeah, that ecg-3 hand grip made all the difference for me in terms of feeling secure carrying the EM10 mk ii. They styled it so you really have to look closely to know there's a grip on the camera. And it's really smart the way one small lever pops most of the grip off to get at the battery/card door without having to unscrew it from the camera's tripod mount.

I especially regret that there is no way to put a minimum speed in the features. A better AFC and that would be perfect. I have had the E-M5 .1 and 5.2 - both wonderful cameras - the absolute winner feature for me was the splash proof WR build, and coupled with any PRO lenses then the kit was good for anything short of underwater. I've had the E-PL7 from when it was new. It is the sibling to the E-M10ii with the same stuff inside, and both have a fair bit of stuff pinched from the then-forthcoming E-M5ii which is the sibling of the PEN-F, which I both have, and the GH4, G7 and G9. Guess which camera I have used most? Right! My E-PL7. It has been in regular use since I got it to replace the too small GM1. The GH4 and G7 are essentially retired. My E-M5ii has been effectively retired since I more recently acquired the PEN-F. The G9 is a G9, big thing, does anything. But my E-PL7 is still in regular use, for 10y now since 2013. The E-PL7 has that AP2 port for the VF4 LVF and other accessories (incl mic in), as does its facelift E-PL8, But after that the Pen-Lite got dumbed down and plasticised. Shame really as the E-PL10 happens to be the best selling mft in Japan, but has lost its quality feel. One thing I do miss on the E-PL7 is a minimum shutter speed which the PEN-F and the G9 have. I don't always want movement blur and will want a faster shutter then. Not insurmountable, Manual mode or Program.

@@DavidFlowerOfficial It does not have as many buttons and dials as the E-M10ii which has few enough but everything is there at the poke of a button and turn the dial. It has a metal body with a quality feel. It is small and only 3-axis and not best with big heavy lenses, but that's not really what it is for. Mine normally wears the PZ14-42 and that is all I usually need on it. My long lens for it is the tiny PZ45-175. No it cannot do everything but perhaps surprisingly its photos are as good as the latest offerings. Ooh and I've just managed to source a SEMA-1 mic+input for the AP2. It can shoot video but not its strong suit. I think that complete my collection of accessory toys for it. I think the E-M10ii has the same sturdy pop-out tilt monitor which is perfect for waist level. The later ones seem flimsy and made of cheese.

Stepping up my lenses as well. Going to splash the cash for the 40-150mm F2.8. I already have the Lumix Leica 12-60mm which is a great lens but I might exchange that now for something less long and a little wider. Not decided what to do with my GX80. Might be better to exchange for a small PEN and slap on a pancake or use it to pay for some of my new gear. I'm not a vlogger so love the flip-up-down screens. On paper, I hate the fully rotating ones, so looking forward to that new experience!

Nice to have your endorsement of this camera for street photography David. I bought one a few years ago and I still love it but I haven't bought many lenses, just the two kit lenses. I use the 14-42 pancake lens for street photography but would like to upgrade. What lens would you recommend for street photography, bearing in mind that I don't like to get too close.

I’m with you on that one, I don’t like to get close either so I like to use the fantastic Olympus 45mm f1.8. It’s very sharp, tiny and on the used market they’re very reasonably priced. I also like the 60mm macro for street but it’s a little more restrictive than the 45mm🖖

This was so enjoyable to view and I couldn't relate any more. Coming from a Nikon DX/FX the E-M10 II was my initial kickstart to look into m43. For me the reduction in weight made me use these cameras more and more, so it has basically become my preferred choice. I also got the E-M1 II a little later and still try to master videography with it. Would you be willing to share some information on how you use yours (either as a comment or maybe a future video idea)?

@philippkaden2233 it’s actually pretty straight forward. I use C4k 24p and use a variable nd filter to keep the shutter at 2x the frame rate. Stabilisation is set to sensor only, not digital. I use the flat profile rather than OM log-400 simply because it means less work in post and I think that’s about it. All the broll was shot hand held because the ibis is awesome. I could not agree more with you David. I love my Pen-f and OM-1 but the small size and great controls make that the E-M10 MKII is still the camera that I pick up most. I actually considered buying a spare one just in case mine dies (but it is an Olympus, they don't die easily). I also like to use the Grainy Film II filter for street photography and have a special setting to simulate older Agfa APX (Highlights -5, Shadows +4). Do you tinker with the highlights and shadows? I think the footage and photos in this video are absolutely fantastic!

Epm2 is great camera but still bigger and heavier then gr. Even my Panasonic gm1 with compact lens on it is much bulkier. By the way Samsung nx3000 is small, has bigger sensor and compact lenses, so is probably better then any m4/3 cameras in terms of size and capabilities.

LOL. 'Probably'? Lol. Nope. I should settle this once and for all, and do a video myself.?Pixel peeping isn’t where this is at. The Samsung *may* have a larger sensor but is it as fast as Olympus or Ricoh on the street? Is a Samsung designed for a pro in mind, or just for the consumer? I own both a EPM2 as well as GRD IV/GRI and with a 14mm lumix fitted the GR lens extrudes slightly more than the Olympus. Weight too, the Olympus is slightly heavier because the battery lasts longer. Ricoh's have terrible battery life, and I often carry up to four extra DB65 batteries. The speed of use benchmark here is how fast each camera is in terms of turning on and taking a picture. The E-PM2 is lightning fast as there is no lens to pop out. It’s simply the better camera. I don’t care as much for image quality (although nice), as it’s all about the 'decisive moment,, and the Olympus' excel here, GR II and III certainly too, but they are far more money. 😀

It depends on what you want to use the videos for. If you thinking of starting KZread, pretty much any camera will do the job, I started this channel using a Samsung phone and many of my videos even now are shot on the Dji Osmo pocket 1. If it’s for something more like wedding videography, you should be able to use the E-M1 as long as you have sufficient light and a good lens. Best lens for portrait on mft again depends on how you like to shoot. The 45mm f1.8 Olympus is nice and the 75mm f 1.8 is also well regarded, but there are a lot of great lenses for the system as well as from third party lenses. Thanks for watching 🖖

The E-M10II is a really good "everyday" camera. When it comes to a more capable camera, I have a Pen F digital, which not only offers better dynamic range, less noise and 20 MP, it also has the pixel-shift hi-res mode with 80 MP resolution (that I actually use for "scanning" my negatives) - in a small, unobtrusive and neatly designed body! When looked closer, m43 (Olympus/OMDS and Panasonic) has some really unique cameras and lenses on offer. Since I got into m43, any other system is of far less appeal to me (other than Leica, that is 😂).
