This Camera Changed My Mind About Micro Four Thirds - Olympus EM10 Mark ii

I bought an old and broken Olympus EM10 Mark ii to try and settle a curiosity I have around the micro four thirds format. This little Olympus absolutely blew me away with what it could do and well and truly changed my mind about MFT. It's not dead!

Hi Chris, First of all I love the enthusiasm! I am always in for more MFT content. The E-M10 MKII is still my daily shooter and after 4 years of daily use it is still in very good shape. Small correction: The E-M10MKII is the last E-M10 to have a fully metal chassis. Especially the latter photos that you took were absolutely gorgeous! On lenses: The 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ (pancake) lens to keep your setup extremely small and portable or the 25mm and 45mm f1.8 primes. These lenses are widely aivailable used for reasonable prices.

I have a little bit of everything from Full Frame, APSc and M43. More than half were bought used at Pawn shops. Couple of years ago picked up an EM10Mii for a great price, everything works perfectly, it quickly became my EDC camera. Few months back, I found an EM10Miiis for the same price so now I have two and I love both of them. Great feature set, small, light weight, etc. Just a joy to use.

I started out with MFT back in 2020 and haven't regretted anything. It was my first interchangeable lens system and I love it because of the lenses being light for wildlife. Even the pro lenses. I'll probably get a FF one day for the experience but I'm never giving up my MFT lenses and bodies. They're so fun to use.

@@ChrisBaitson my personal favorite is the 40-150 2.8 PRO. Sometimes , you can find a deal for it used for $850. It's so versatile and clinically sharp. Portraits, wildlife (this version allows teleconverter use). If you're into portraits and want fast, sharp glass, the Olympus 1.8 series (17, 25, 45, and especially the 75mm) are great bang for your buck. If you want a zoom that covers standard zoom ranges, the Oly 12-40 2.8 PRO is sometimes under $400 used. Panasonic just came out with an awesome 9mm wide angle. Manual only lenses: Laowa's got some great things going on lately. Super telephoto I recommend the Panasonic 100-400, the Oly 75-300. Looking to get pro level primes at the long end? The Panasonic Leica 200 2.8 and Oly 300 f4 pro can be found for a good used price. Macro I recommend the Olympus 60mm 2.8 or the Laowa 50 2.8 (the Oly has really good auto focus and the Laowa is manual only but has 2x magnification). Long-winded, but hope this helps. As you can see, I like doing it all lol

Thanks and happy new year! Several years ago, I did a lot of research into the best overall ILC system. I seriously considered the "FF" Sony A7iii, but I wanted a full FL-range system and didn't want to carry a huge, heavy pack and regularly need a tripod. It became apparent that MFT was the way to go and I went with the Lumix G9 (Lumix has great menus/ergo, plus most Oly bodies feel small to me). The only "advantage" of FF over MFT is more DR, but that's rarely a problem and can be overcome by bracketing (in the rare case where I actually want to produce an HDR image). Any competent photographer can get shallow DoF (way overdone to the point of cliché anyway) with any ILC and most of the time, I want deeper DoF, and MFT's advantage there is considerable, plus the base ISO of 200 allows for smaller apertures (and superior IS means I rarely carry a tripod, even at 800mm in low light). Also, High-ISO noise is no longer an issue with programs like DxO DeepPRIME/XD and Topaz DeNoise/Photo AI (I have both and each works very well, depending on the image). Bottom line: Buying a "FF" or even APS-C makes no sense and you're (literally) buying into marketing hype and wasting your money if you do so. You will NOT produce better images! I often go out with just my Lumix FZ1000 (1" bridge camera--good when you want one-handed operation like when walking the dogs) and get great results in most situations. I've neither looked back nor regretted my decision to go MFT and you don't need "pro" gear like the G9, GH6 (25MP. but biased toward video), or OM-1, plus there are many great used deals out there (I bought the Oly 60mm Macro from KEH and it's been great). All of these lenses have served me well and I'd buy them again: Leica 8-18, Mitakon 25 f/0.95, Lumix G-X 35-100 f/2.8, and Leica 100-400. That's an EFL range of 16-800mm and it all fits into a tiny 5lg/11-lb sling pack. I did get them new, but I got some reasonable deals. I also recommend the battery grip for longer lenses (or if you shoot portrait mode a lot). There are cheaper options that still work great (e.g., the Lumix 100-300 covers 200-600mm for way less than the long Leica). I also have a Lumix GX85 (16MP) which came with "kit" 12-32 and 45-150 zooms and that system is great as well, plus it fits into a couple of jacket (or cargo pants) pockets.

Great comment! Too many people lean towards the high end stuff when really it isn’t needed. On your topic of DR I can tell you that this Olympus camera has more than my 5D3 and my Canon RP. The only one I have that comes close is my 7D. I’m going to be looking seriously at the MFT format and hopefully spend some time with it this year.

I had FF Sony. It was great. I also had a Sony RX10 miii for 600mm wildlife pics; and in good light, it was good (even great sometimes). But I wanted just a bit more reach than 600mm. I didn't want to pay the premium of FF for an 800mm lens (this was before Canon's 800mm f11), nor did I want the size either. When I learned more about MFT, I realized I could get that sweet spot of better low light performance than the 1" RX10 sensor, and a reasonably priced 800mm equivalent lens, I thought I'd give it a try: Bought a used Olympus EM1 miii, and the reach, picture quality and other amazing features I was getting: Live ND, Live Comp., IBIS, AMAZING glass, internal focus stacking, 80 megapixel high-res mode, weather sealing, etc. etc. made me feel confident about going all in on MFT...Still have my Oly, and now I have a GH6 for video plus 8 lenses (for less $$ and weight than FF glass). Yes, no doubt FF is better at low light, but I had to ask myself, what was the percentage of times I shoot in really low light? Also, I bought 2 f1.2 lenes, and I am doing pretty darn good in low light now ;)

  • @ChrisBaitson

    @ChrisBaitson

    Жыл бұрын

Your point about low light is actually pretty good. I’ve seen a lot of folks slamming MFT for the low light performance, which is also valid, but if you don’t shoot that much in low light…. It’s a non issue and the bang for buck with the crop factor is there. I owned a GX7 about 2 years ago and threw a x2 extender on with a Canon 100-400mm for the giggles and took some awesome shots of the moon. 1600mm in equivalent focal length for cheap as!

Welcome to the EM 10 mark ii, Chris. I got one when they first came out in 2015. The lighter weight than my Canon and the 5-axis IBIS made all the difference for my shaky hands. And I love how it reminds me of my old Mamiya SX 1000 35mm SLR from the 70s. A very cool retro look. The EM 10 mk ii is absolutely fun to shoot and packed to the gills with features. By all means, I'd love to see more content using your MFT hardware. P.S. if you're looking for a great fast, light weight, but non-weather sealed prime, I love the images from my Oly 17mm f/1.8. And it has a manual focus clutch you can engage easily too, if you want to use it.

Anyway I enjoyed your video and the photos created with this little diamond. However I have to express an objection about the building quality. Despite the fact that this camera has indeed no protection from water and dust, I can assure you that it has an amazing building quality and that it is metal, no plastic. I recently considered moving to fujifilm but decided it would be way too expensive to completely change systems, acquire new lenses, etc. And I cannot complain about the quality of the images I get from the EM10. So I’m sticking with it. It would be nice to have a bluetooth connection, smartphone control. I just got the 60mm Zuiko macro lens for it, have yet to try it out. I have been scanning my husband’s old slides and organizing all my old images, scanned film and digital native images. I am really impressed by how much image quality has improved over the years. Recently, I even went as far as to replace it with an EM5 III (after 25.000 shots). While the EM5 III turned out to be a significant upgrade (even visually), at the same time it's still more amazing for me how much the M10 II can do considering what it costs. A great package. I had a MkI and it was underused so I sold it. I missed it so much that within three months I bought a new MkII after the price dropped. The MkII has better ergonomics with the two top dials having improved positioning. It is still underused by me but so are all the others. My most used cameras over the years are [a just sold] Lumix G6 and G7 plus a retained Lumix GX80. They all have their qualities but I have sold all those older Lumix that didn’t have in-body stabilisation. They were ten and eight years old respectively. Instead I’ve an E-M1 MkII bought new but cheap at a clear out sale, plus just last week a Lumix G9 bought used for just over half the current discounted new price. Yes, I have too many cameras, but I like them and like using them. They keep my brain working and my eyes interested in what’s going on around me. The 10MkII is currently fitted with the Oly 45mm f1.8 to which it is perfectly matched.

The E-M10II is a fun camera! I bought one as a back-up camera to my Pen F digital - and use the both more or less equally. The Pen F has a better sensor (not only larger resolution), and IQ is significantly better (including dynamic range) - but the E-M10II is actually fine for everyday shooting. Great video and intro to the Olympus EM-10 MK II. These are incredible, high-quality cameras and represent superb bargains for photography today. The Olympus fleet of M43 cameras can be a little intimidating with a VERY comprehensive menu of adjustments, but dial-in the Super Control Panel and the creativity opportunities are immense. One recommendation I can make is to get on over to Rob Trek's videos here on KZread, he dives deep into the EM-10 MK II and walks you thro' the maze that can be the menu and setting up the camera. Oh, and Happy New Year.

@@ChrisBaitson Hi Chris, Indeed, I cannot recommend Rob Trek enough for his in-depth walk-thro' for the EM 10, it really is worth investing a couple of hours to nail the set-up of the camera. As for lenses, you'll find lots of on-line gushing and recommendations for the "Pro" lenses, but they are expensive - well, for me anyway. The M. Zuiko "kit" zoom lenses are more than adequate for my photography and are relatively inexpensive. The 14-42mm II R lens is excellent and for a longer tele, the 40-150mm is an absolute bargain. I have recently invested in a 12-50mm which I now use most of the time. One other lens that I can recommend if size and weight is important, is the Lumix 12-32mm Pancake, I opted for this as the Olympus pancake 14_42mm is power-zoom only and has reliability issues. All the best Chris, I hope that you get to grips with the Olympus and create the banger images that this remarkable camera will help you create.

Where your full frame Canon will score is dynamic range - not in the numbers on the spec sheets, but in reality. I've used Olympus cameras since 2015 and in the highlights they are a bleep to recover in software. So, as a landscaper, my method has been to use filters to protect the highlights as much as I can. I've recently purchased a Sigma full frame camera, and its ability to capture a scene in one frame with no filters and still give be the latitude in software just blows the Olympus away. The system is superb, but it does have its limitations.

I’m going to try some long exposure stuff in the morning with this. Having to throw my Canon lenses on as I don’t have any filters small enough. I didn’t find the highlights too bad to recover but I tend to shoot to the right anyway, being a Canon user, so I’m somewhat used to iffy highlights.

10:10 Holding the camera like that, I think you have the same problem I had: the camera is too small. So my suggestion is, get the Olympus camera grip for the EM10 M2. It makes a big difference. When my old shoulders got tired of my Nikon DSLR, I looked around for a mirrorless that could replace it for walking around photography. I couldn't afford a lot and soon it was clear that the best value proposition was with M43. Sure I would have liked a Sony or Fuji, but too pricey, especially the lenses. But which M43? I settled on the first model in the slr configuration, the Oly EM5 Mk1. Only $230, plus $130 for the Lumix 12-32, and I was in business. My reaction: Wow. I know the M43 art has advanced from it, but it's still a very capable camera. And nice sharp M43 lenses don't have to cost and arm and a leg. If you're on a tight budget, it's still an option to look at.

Exactly, Olympus did very good extremely versatile cameras... All their line shared most of the same customizability, with adjusments due to the reduction on the number of butons and dumbed down particularities... It was daunting... OM systems is not doing the same, which is understandable... It's a pitty to see that they let go the camera department in the year before the rest of the world finally lost the sensor size nonsense, and started to realize how good olympus cameras were. OM systems is continuing their legacy, the om1 is an absolute beast of a camera... Please stop the "ideal sensor resolution" idiocracy, it depends a lot on technology which determines sensor sensibility to light and on how the camera deals with the signal comming from the sensor... A 16Mp from 2005 is very different from a 16Mp sensor from 2012... A good example of the former is comparing the sensor you have in your camera with the sensor in the nikon d300. The sensor in the em10 is far superior in every aspect, dispite of the sensor in the d300 being ff... If you are stoked with the om10 mkii, get an em1 mkii you will be blown away by the bang vs price... The IQ is also quite superior. If you are very enthusiastic about these cameras/format and have the money, don't hesitate and buy an om1... My goodness that camera is soo good!!! I recently upgraded my em1 mkii to the om1 and OMG, I'm stoked with how good it is. The em1 mkii is still an amazing camera and will be used for a very long time, but everything I wanted improved in it has been very cleverly included in the om1! It is that good, and with room for improvements with a couple of firmware releases, I only found minor things that can be corrected with firmware updates, I hope OM systems keeps the good work!

@@ChrisBaitson a teaser: the om1 allows you to take 50mp images, hdr images and focus stacked images while holding the camera with your hands... The results are mind blowing. It also adds ND digital filters up to 64 that you can also use while holding the camera with your hands. The focus is blazing fast (the subject detection is almost flawless) and almost on par with what you get from a sony a1 (and "twichable" with a firmware update)... The video capabilities have also been improved quite a bit, the om1 is a very capable video camera too...

Sometimes, a camera features forced a photographer to change their perspective on what they can and can't do. I don't shoot pictures anymore, but light and simple camera (e.g point-and-shoot, film) are an experience on itself. Back then, I used Lumix G5 (probably still working too)

Let’s face it ..We are in the age of hype . Just think and I understand there are improvements with each new iPhone or Android model. The Olympus OM D 10 Mark Ii was introduced in think 2016 and look at the beautiful photos Folks let’s face it you can’t build a house with a hammer you need to employ different tools for the task at hand . In photography the same applies .. A full frame for X APS -C for Y and M43 for Z . I own Nikon and have Olympus/ Panasonic . I love the M43 system , but still use Nikon . You evidenced that a “ broken “ ( PS just picked up M10 Mark ii broken on e Bay and it works 100%😊)that it takes great photos and that’s the POINT can you capture and compose great pics ! Yes you can .. case closed save money and headaches and buy a M43 a few years old and stay away from click bate !! Have Fun and take Photos !!!!!❤
