😂😂 just a bit!

Things I like about the Brompton - 1. Tiny when folded up. Store It behind my bedroom door, can put it in car boots, and regularly take on buses, taxis and trains 2. Never need to lock it. 3. Superior acceleration off the line - better than any conventional bike I know of due to the small wheels. 4. Very manoeuvrable in towns and cities 5. Front T bag means I can carry a lot of stuff and is easier to use than a pannier bag.

We're another couple of Brompton aficionados. My wife is a "proper" cyclist with several bikes including a Chas Roberts tourer that she had made to celebrate a significant Birthday. She's solo'd LeJog a couple of times and when our daughter in Edinburg was looking to get a bike she cycled up from the south coast to deliver one of her "spare" bikes in person. When she first got a Brompton she was a bit dubious and thought that perhaps she'd made a mistake. it is now her favourite bike and her Roberts is just used for shopping trips. We had a great adventure a few years back. I was celebrating my 70th so we took the Bromptons on the train to London, took the overnight sleeper to Glasgow and then cycled from Bowling Basin to Portobello along the Canal towpaths. Both Bromptons fitted underneath the bottom bunk on the sleeper train. We too love our Bromptons ❤

She's a gem, when I asked how she'd like to celebrate her 65th Birthday she told me she would like to attend the Bristol beer festival at the Engine Shed as it fell on the day of her birthday. A great weekend in Bristol. We are planning a trip on our Brommies for next year, Poole > Weymouth > Bristol/Bath > and back down to Poole in a triangular ride.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been a bike nut for years but I’ve come to love the Brompton the most (to the extent that I’ve got two of them now. One for commuting/general use one for pimping and going touring). They’re just so practical yet offer little in the way of compromise. They ride well, can be fully loaded yet fold so small, marvellous. I think you have to be a ‘certain age’ or just have a certain amount of experience but once you *get* them there’s no looking back.

My thoughts exactly. I have several bicycles and an ebike but I love the Brommie and often choose it to go riding and running errands around town.

The Brompton folding bicycle is known for several things: high price, consistent materials and construction workmanship, craftsmanship, and quality; and is a joy to ride. What you see is what you get; take it for what it is. Like this Brompton aficionado, Paul, effusively relates, you have to be something of a bicycle fan and then even more so as a folding bicycle enthusiast. I've never owned a Brompton as those are still rare in the United States. For some time, Dahon held the largest market share in the U.S. for folding bicycles. Therefore I've owned Dahon folding bicycles and I can absolutely relate to Scotsman Paul in my love of the history of bicycling, bicycling itself, bicycles in general, and naturally my folding bicycle. I'm not the only one who loves folding bicycles here in the U.S. In fact, I've had two folding bicycles stolen from me in the middle of the day in very public places with people walking around. I once owned a full-size folding bicycle that required removing the front wheel. While it was a joy to ride, the full size and cumbersome nature of it denied the concept of convenience and portability of the folding bicycle. Yet folding, full-size bicycles were invented shortly after the dawn of the 20th century. But today a true, portable, convenient folding bicycle has 16 inch wheels like the Brompton or 20 inch wheels of its competitors. It's difficult to describe the fun feeling of individual mobility tooling around in a small folding bicycle. The feeling and ride are totally different than riding a full size bicycle, whether it be a racer or beach bike with wide tires. The small folding bicycle is very agile and maneuverable although it doesn't handle potholes like a full size bicycle so you learn to spot potholes early on and skirt around those fast. You just know and feel the fun of your individual mobility when instead of trudging along at 2 mph walking, you are comfortably bicycling on at a steady, non-tiring speed of 10 to 12 mph, arriving at your destination much faster. Sure, you could get there faster in an internal combustion engine vehicle or an electric-powered one today, but nothing beats your own personal mobility under your own power using a machine that effectively and efficiently harnesses the basic tools of the lever, pulley, and the wheel. And you are not reliant on petrol or gasoline, or electricity from an outlet for that matter.

I've had a Brompton for 12 years and my experience has been more mixed. I bought it to support my rail commute from York to Leeds which I did from late 2010 until the 2020 lockdown, using it every working day bar 3 over that period. to travel to from York / Leeds stations. Once a week in BST I would cycle back home, a 36-mile ride including a few miles on light trails on the Trans Pennine cycleway. Good: the convenience of the fold and how compact the bike is once folded, it's by far the best-designed folding bike and easy to take on public transport / into the workplace. The bad: the very small wheels can be unstable and are easily deflected by potholes and other road imperfections - once it slips away, you are not saving it. I have the scars to prove it. The fragility of some parts: I've lost count of how many wheels I've gotten through (I've just picked up another front one today), the issues is hub / bearing wear rather than rim / spokes. Ditto rear-frame pivots, pedals, brakes. Cost: not just initial purchase, but serving and some parts - way more expensive than 'normal' bikes. I needed a service every 12-18 months and the cost was usually £200-£300. I did around 2K miles a year in all (Yorkshire) weathers, but it wore quickly and regularly, and not just chains / sprockets.

Hi Jim, thanks for watching and sharing your views. It sounds like you put the bike really through it’s paces and tested the Brompton in a more extreme environment on a regular basis. My particular Brompton hasn’t been through that intensity on a day to day basis so it’s interesting to hear your experience. I think this issue may not be contained to the Brompton though - our customers that commute as heavily as you do all year round suffer similar mechanical issues and required maintenance. Thanks again.

I agree. After a lifetime of bicycles, the Brommies have become our favorites. Nimble and foldable, we get our 2 bikes in the trunk of the Honda Civic to travel with them.

Hi, Brompton owner form Mexico CIty here! The 6 speeds in my 2014 M6L are more than welcome with all the underpasses and overpasses I encounter over here. I'm in LOVE with my bike. I also have a Mountain Bike but since the Brompton came to my live the poor thing hasn't seen the light of day. It's one of the things in my life that I really enjoy!

One feature people don't talk about much is that Bromptons have a shock absorber, making it a comfortable ride. The compliments from strangers - here in the USA, where Bromptons are relatively rare - was another unexpected plus.

Paul is going to upgrade his shock absorber at Christmas and he will be doing a video about it! Paul has a different experience when first buying the bike in Scotland because he was laughed at on almost a daily basis! This was in 2015 and now they are a bit more common in Scotland. My M3R is a black 2015 model with 44T ring. It carried me, my dog Lil’ and all our camping gear on our LeJog 2021. I’ve been riding bikes for approx 60 years and want no other bike now. I love my Brompton. 🥰❤️🌹🤗

Lil’ rode in a Plastic crate purchased from a Dutch bike shop - the Dutch stick these crates on the front and rear of their bikes, they look a bit like a milk bottle crate. I lashed it with leather laces to the frame borrowed from my TBag so Lil’ could sit up front and see her country from LE to JOG with the best view. I absolutely am in love with my Brompton! ❤️

I'm totally with you on this. I live in California and have ridden Bromptons (I've had three) for years. They're just too much fun, and you can take them anywhere. I lived in a flat city and rode them there for about a decade, then retired and moved to an extremely hilly coastal town where riding any conventional bike was difficult. So I at first got a Vintage Electric, which is a great bike and rides almost like a motorcycle, but soon got an electric Brompton, and now that's all I ride. The convenience is beyond compare, they're surprisingly powerful on some very steep hills, and you can never discount the fun factor. Easily the most fun bikes to ride that I've ever tried.

I too have a Brompton (A Late-2020 S6R Gloss Black [Black Edition]). It's a great bike I had used daily for commuting, delivery gigs, errands and of course weekend rides. I love this bike because of how practical it is and how much it's supported compared to other bikes as a lot of aftermarket parts available. The community itself is full of interesting things from one-off aftermarket builds to stories about the journeys the owners took daily. All I could say is enjoy riding your B and keep her running healthy.

True! I had an interesting ride where I needed to cycle between tables in an outside seating area and the Brompton handled it like a pro!

I love my Brompton M6R from 2007 and has been very reliable with usual service on fold, bottom bracket, tyre changes and a chain change. Looking a bit in need of some TLC and the seat post has developed a lot of rust speckles which I cannot seem to shift, so probably needs replacing. But perfect as the 'missing link' on train journeys between station, home and/or destination. My touring has been limited, but really enjoyed a few hundred km down the Danube radweg - totally agree with shorter stages and enjoying the locations!

@veloworks9266 Thanks for the reply and apologies for taking time to get back. The Brompton has mainly stayed in the house which is fairly dry although it has from time to time been left in the shed. I have used it during the last year or so to go swimming at the Mersey estuary and wonder if it has been exposed to a lot of salty and damp air while parked along the shore.

Nice video 👍 I purchased my Brompton this summer. Best decision I made. I ride it all day long every Sunday.

I've had my M6L now for nine years and I like it more every day. I actually find myself just staring at it sometimes! I've had a Brooks B17 Imperial on it from the start and fitted Ergon grips with short bar ends. it was when I raced it int eh BWC a few years ago that I really began to appreciate what great little bikes these are. I hammered it on all sorts of surfaces for a month before the race to get into some sort of shape and it took everything I could throw at it. I fitted SPDs for the race but have gone back to the standard pedal as it gets used everyday, mostly in "civvies" and folds flatter. We moved to near the Suffolk coast a couple of years ago and I probably ride it more now than ever. Just a great little bike. Will definitely be dropping to a 44 tooth chainring soon as I've been riding it in some hilly terrain in the North recently and could do with a slightly easier life now I'm retired!

2018 M2L owner here. I did have an issue with sticky gears but realised I have to keep it clean of muck and sand (I live in N. E. Lincolnshire near the coast), no probs for a while. Only change is a pair of Ergon GP2 grips which totally transform the handling and comfort. Love going out on it.

The grips sound like a good option. We lived in Scotland for 9 years till recently and totally understand about the muck as we had to clean our bikes a lot!

My 2021 S6L Rocket Red Black Edition is my favorite of all the bikes I have ever had. I haven't touched my road bike in over a year. Throw in my electric lights and the Borough bag and my commutes are awesome.

I love my Brompton too. I have a midtnight blue bike. I think I brought it around 2017 and I love it. I can park with my car and bike the rest of the way or bring my Brompton with me in different trains or busses. I took it with me for a trip by train to Hamburg and it was perfect. I like your waterbottle holder. I think I will sew something similar to that to my te/coffee cup.

I couldn’t agree more, I do everything on mine except MTB. I felt the same as you - if I could only keep one road bike which would I keep - I came up with the same answer. I then took it to the next level and sold all my other road bikes. It felt liberating! Subscribed to your channel 👍

Cheers, I really appreciate the sub. This year I had just finished hiking the Cleveland Way (loved it), and started selling anything I had multiples of. I began with tents and sleeping bags and then moved on to bikes and technical clothing. It was a revelation and the highlight of the year in many ways. If you’re tempted to try it dip your toe in gently would be my suggestion.

I totally agree, they are brilliant. Iv'e taken mine to Dubai, Australia & New Zealand from the UK. Ridden the London to Brighton and raced in the Brompton World Championship plus some other races, it's been so much fun for the five years I've owned it, and will never sell it. I think I love my Brompton too!

@@veloworks9266 The last BWC in the UK was in 2019 was around St James Park, down the Mall and going past Buckingham Palace, it was incredible to take part in. I believe they did one in Singapore this year, but I hope it comes back to the UK again soon.

I'm on my second machine and have been riding them with great satisfaction since 1995 (my first one is still in use in other hands). An expensive solution to the rusty chainstay bridge problem would be the Ti forks; I always thought that the raw lacquer finish was not for me and now I know why!

Hi, thanks for watching. Glad to hear from another enthusiast! The titanium rear end is a good solution - we agree. I do like the raw laquer finish mainly because I can see these issues as they arise.

I have a very similar setup and the same year, a 2015 P6R with reduced gearing and a C-17 saddle. Mine has the sand color with the T-bag and racksack. I, too love it. I didn’t use to appreciate the P bar until it was discontinued! Over time, I have noticed that I will need to reposition the P bar rearward because it will tend to move forward.

Hi thanks for watching. It might be worth replacing the handlebar clamp bolt as they can fatigue - you can get these from SJS cycles if in the UK or Brilliant Bikes. And they need to be done up to 18Nm . Hope that helps!

Ha ha that’s a fun video! I have a black ml6 (which I love). I have an alpkit stem cell bottle holder similar to yours. It’s very roomy so I inserted a cut-off juice bottle in it to act as a sleeve for my drink bottle and I can pack tools and snacks around the base of the sleeve and they don’t get in the way when taking my drink bottle in and out! I haven’t got a rack but have a Carradice saddle bag which works ok...lovely and very capable bikes!

Thanks for your insight. I'm in my late 70s and bought a Brompton 5/6 years ago. Great for an old bloke who has trouble getting his leg over a saddle these days. Tasmania is hilly, my legs aren't what they used to be - so I got Brompton Junction Melbourne to fit a Shlumpf Mountain Drive paired with the largest chainring we could get on it. The bottom three gears are really unusable to be honest but the top 3 in Mountain Drive allow me to climb hills - slowly but without too much huffing and puffing. I have ridden a couple of overnighters and employed the 'rucksack on the back hanging off the seat anchored to the rack' method of gear carrying plus the Brompton touring bag. Brilliant. Everything balances so well. We are looking at cycling a few of the Victorian Rail Trails now covid has "gone" and we are allowed out of the State. Difficult to get our recumbent trikes over Bass Strait but simple with the Brompton - I can fly!! Thanks for allowing me to ramble on. Keep on Bromptoning.

Yes there is a real forgiveness in the ride quality - and I love it!!!

I also love my Brompton. It makes me smile whenever I ride it. I live in the Welsh hills a few miles from the Gospel Pass, so need a lot of gears for my seventy three year old knees. I have fitted a Stronglight triple minus the outer ring, which I replaced with a chain guard. I now have a thirty eight outer which is fine for me most of the time. I don't pedal downhill so no problem with spinning out. I rarely use the inner ring but am very glad it's there when I need it. I use the "greasy finger" shifting system and don't find it arduous. If I am on a hilly journey, I simply stay on the smaller ring until the gradients ease. I take the bike on local buses and if I am on a longer ride, like the security of knowing I can always get home by bus or taxi if a mishap should occur to me or the bike. The Brompton is great for shopping. I can fill the t-bag and put extra stuff on the rack. I had planned to take it touring last year, but two separate injuries cancelled all my plans (neither injury Brompton related). I am about to start riding again, hoping to get fit enough to take a trip when the weather warms up. My goal for this year is to do the Devon coast to coast.

Hi, thanks so much for watching and your comments - it sounds like you’ve made some very personal and appropriate adaptions to your Brompton. I’ve cycled the gospel pass but not on my Brompton - I can imagine that would be a great ride to do on the Brompton, I’ll add it to my list. Same re the Devon coast to coast, I did it a few years ago but would love to do on my Brompton next time. I just had a weekend with my Brompton and cycled a section from Plymouth to Tavistock and it was great! Happy Cycling, Paul

I have two Brompton at the moment, and enjoy riding both of them for slightly differing reasons. Both are 6-speed, standard pedals and front cog; one is a 2002, racing green M6R, with a SON hub dynamo, Brooks leather saddle and grips, RAW leather carrying handle (which are just brilliant to get on and off trains, in and out of lifts, up and down stairs, etc), Busch & Muller Lumotec front light, Brompton (Spanniga) rear light. I recently had to change the back wheel from the original Sturmey Archer hub to a BWR hub and wheel, which was a shame but I couldn’t find a replacement of the same age when a spoke broke. My other is a 2016 P6R, again with Brooks saddle and bar tape, RAW carrying handle, Shimano dynamo hub, B&M Lumotec/Brompton lights. The baggage is key as I travel a lot and live abroad too, so maximum capacity is important when travelling (T-bag and rear racks), C-bag usual day, Ortlieb bag for computer/iPad in the rain (I live in Istanbul and Baku, both of which can be rainy, though not like Edinburgh and Scotland where I used to live), and the P6R has an additional Brooks Glenbrook saddlebag for real touring. I used to ride TREK bikes, both full suspension and singe track, but have come to really love my Brompton bikes too, especially that ease of travel on aeroplanes and trains across the globe - some of the places I’ve taken mine, there are no other Brompton bikes, such as Central Asia. As an older rider too, the Brompton has the kind of form factor that is so suitable and easy to ride, making me much more confident as I continue riding into my mid-60’s now - I don’t feel I can handle bigger bikes now. And the engineering is just magical! Not all good though, as the components are not the best quality - gear shifters are particularly poor, given the cost of the bike, but third-party additions and adaptations are good for upgrading and can also make the Brompton really stand out.

I also love my Brompton! I don't ride it like you do - ambitiously I want to ride to work twice a week - we'll see ! My favorite thing is I can shove it in the car and not have to deal with a bike rack !!! And it rides just like a normal bike, but it fits under my desk! It is very nice that Brompton! I ride Moulton bicycles exclusively and while these aren't folding bikes the compactness of them is really useful. I do cycle touring like you and I love to do it on my Moulton bicyle.

i also love my Brommie. ive had all kinds of bikes but the same as you if i had to choose one the Brommie wins. i were used to small wheels as i have a 1965 Moulton very smooth ride but the brompton is so versatile it folds . i also do some off roading with it. i have since put a swytch kit on so being two wheel drive very useful when muddy.

The bike is extremely versatile and useful for what it is.. You can take it to buses and trains and inside your tiny home /If it is tiny/ But what I found out over the years of all styles of riding and meeting lots of people, working of different bikes and listen to what people like or don't like about them.. There is no single answer to the 'one bike' enigma.. Everyone is different and lives on different conditions or/and/ countries. Maybe is the fact that I grow up with very similar to your Brompton bike. I had it for more then 10-12 years (since child to teen years) and at the time I was dreaming for 28 inch road stile bike with gears to ride with my friends in the neighborhood. My dream bike at that time was Puch, they where the bikes of my country national road racing team. But we where poor at that time and I was stuck with only one foldable single speed 20 inch steel bike until I grow up and started working and making my own money to buy stuff. .. So, maybe was the fact that people strive for what they don't have. So I think that the bike is not for children to play and ride with their friends. It is more for grown people that need something useful to get around.

I’ve been riding my Brompton for a couple years now. I love it. It’s about 10lbs lighter than my last bike. So I can really move with little effort. I used to ride it to work. I have the dynamo, because I rode to work early, in the dark. I’d bring it inside, fold it up, and tuck it in a corner where no one goes. And if it was raining in the morning or after work, I’d just fold it up and bring it on the bus. The one thing I don’t like about it (besides the micro-bumps, which I’ve gotten used to) is how much I feel like a target for theft. I don’t bring a lock with me, because I don’t really want to lock it up out of sight… ever. Sometimes I bring a lock if I’m going somewhere where I can keep an eye on it, like to a fast food place where I can see out the windows. Otherwise… if I can’t bring it in with me, I don’t go, or I don’t bring it. Which brings up the question (if you haven’t already done a video on this maybe it’s a good idea) where do you, or where would you NOT bring your folded Brompton inside? I don’t ride it when I go to my doctor or dentist, or if I have to go into the hospital for a blood test. Something tells me that they might not like a dirty bicycle in places that are supposed to be sterile. Although… my folded up bike really shouldn’t be any more offensive than someone rolling in with a rolling walker or wheelchair that has also spent the day outside rolling across all kinds of road conditions. I also have not tried bringing it into a sit down restaurant, fancy or regular. I have brought it into some fast food places, and grocery stores and Walmart and Target and Home Depot (I’m in the USA). They have the room. Other places might be small shops with narrow aisles. One small grocery store complained and wanted me to leave my bike unattended at the front of the store. So where do you NOT bring your Brompton inside? Has anyone ever complained when you have?

Hi, thanks for watching the video and your interesting comments. If I’m going into a supermarket for 5 mins I will lock it up but generally it comes everywhere with me. Doctors or hospital - I would generally walk as they are close enough. I have taken it into restaurants no problem. I don’t see how anyone should turn round and say you can’t bring it in - especially if you have a cover for it. For example on the buses they want a cover.

I love mine too. Went in Spain last spring and took our Brompton with us . Such pleasure.

I am 5 foot 2 inches and wanted it lightweight to carry it up two flights of stairs 😆. I went for the seat post alone as titanium. I skipped the carrier at the back and have a Brompton bag holder in the front.. making it about 8 kgs.. I also got a lateral extendable steel wheels to roll it for very short distances indoor.. ☺️

@@veloworks9266 Honestly , I don’t remember.. bought it from Brompton bikes.. action bike shop in London..when titanium was first introduced for the seat posts around 2002-2003.. sorry…

I love mine too. I bought my P6 in 2016 or 17 and fitted the rack , luggage block and C bag from the T5 I sold on. I have recently swapped the bars for M type handlebars fitted with bar ends. I bought it with reduced gearing. I have the dynohub and leave it switched on. I find 70psi my optimum tyre pressure and feel every pebble. I have only one issue with the small wheels . I have dropped into two potholes which stopped the bike dead.My momentum tossed me over the handlebars. I love it so much that in deference to my old age I bought a used Brompton Electric. I love that too but although it is fun it is not as useful,has barely enough range and with the extra weight is a pain to carry around railway stations , Also having to stop to engage or alter power means it doesn't get turned off to save it for when you really need it. It rides just as well without power as any other Brompton but in other respects compares poorly with some top class dutch style pedelecs. I still love it .

Hi Euan How easy/expensive is it to change from P bars to M bars. I’ve come to understand that the different bars are not easily interchangeable. My last H was stolen during lockdown and without joining a long wait list all I could get was an ex display P6R. I’m putting up with the P bars but would much prefer H. Rebecca

I’ve had my B-spoke orange H6R (44T) for 10yrs (new 2012). I’ve had 2 punctures on my Marathons (both rear, usually run 60psi F/R for comfort). Definitely the best bike, ridden road and light off-road, done 9,000+ leisure miles. Changed: brake levers (Saccon to Avid SD to Brompton triptych), bars M/H to Joseph Kuosac 100mm mid riser (trimmed from 600mm to 560mm), saddle (Brompton/Velo to Charge Spoon to Brooks B17 Flyer Select for 9yrs now experimenting with Ergon ST Gel Mens), grips (Brompton foam to Ergon GP1-L), pedals (Brompton to Wellgo flats). Bought with T-bag, also bought Ortlieb Mini-O and Ortlieb O bag (both white), brake pads: Fibrax to Swissstop Flash Pro BXP Blue, seatpost: Brompton extended to Brompton standard, now back to extended for Ergon saddle.

@@veloworks9266 good question. I have seen Bromptons with a derailer and I have no idea which ones they use. They seem to fit tidily in the triangle by the bottom bracket and presumably have thought through the cable runs. In my case I manually change rings, it is possible to use the smaller ring by moving the chain with your heel, the reverse is to stop and use your fingers or a stick. It is irritating not to have a derailer but in the main I am either in hilly country or I'm not. The effect of the 32 is to give you two lower gears so previous 5 & 6 are equivalent to 3 & 4 but are now your top gears and you end up with a minus one and minus 2. I don't use the small chain ring very often the time it was most needed was touring in Poland. My son was on a Thorn Nomad with a Rolhoff gearbox and it was interesting to note that the 32 ring and lowest gear was pretty much a direct match to the Rolhoff lowest gear in terms of pedal rotation and distance moved. You can also use a Brompton specific Schlumph mountain drive but the cheap option is the stronglight chain rings.

I should think it is possible to use a front shifter also, on a Brompton? I wouldn't like to have to shift gears by heel or fingers. I have a fixed holder/protector for the chain, on my frame in front by now, but I have thought about adding - 6 extra gears to my bike, as I normally use it in a very hilly area vith a serpentine road, up and down. And my brakes, to a full stop from high speeds, passing some cattle protection tubes at intervals, never have let me down! Finn. Denmark

I love my brompton, it's fun to ride. My knly gripe is I constantly have to adjust the gears.

upgrade from single speed STRIDA Foldie to BROMPTON M6R in Jan 2022. No regrets and will never look back. Lighter, easier to handle, smaller to store and literally everything about it I loved. Only setback was it is costly to get one here in Singapore.

I congratulate you on a charming video that seems to have attracted some equally charming comments. I don't agree with your 110psi recommendation though. I have mine considerably less to soften the ride. I do have a Brompton Electric though so having a higher rolling resistance is not noticeable.

@@veloworks9266 I have just remembered another reason to have lower tyre pressures: Less risk of tyres 'popping' from overheating due to braking on long descents.

Best folding bikes around..very useful in London and very speedy too…make sure you lock them up very well..I use four locks in London when I have to leave it out..marathon plus one puncture over 2000 miles..not bad for city cycling!!

Yeah the Brompton has a certain draw. I don't ride mine quite as much as I used to, it is still a keeper. I managed to make a 10 days tour of Gran Canaria on it in April 2022 as it is relatively easy to fly with. Riding the epic mountain climbs on it was awesome. It is great for wild camping as well as it can easily be stored in a tent vestibule depending on type and make of tent of course. Mine is a 2006 vintage M6L although a couple of years ago I fitted an aftermarket rear rack as I don't like the Brompton one. I have upgraded the brakes and fitted the SP dynamo hub with Supernova E3 Pro 2 lights. For touring with luggage and any hill climbing you certainly need a 39T front chain ring imho. I've also ridden it all over France, Paris, up and down the famous cols of the Pyrenees, the Basque country and the Alps. Also all over Wales, up and over the Gospel Pass, twice in one day on the hottest day of the year this year 2022. Loaded up it is pretty stable especially if you keep your luggage low. I use small Ortlieb panniers on the rear rack which work very well and I can still half fold the bike as well which you can't if you use the std Brompton rack. It's a great versatile little bike. Andrew Ritchie should be knighted for his design of it and services to cycling. The weak point is definitely the lower pivot which either seizes or develops play. I've had to replace it twice which I guess isn't bad but is still twice too often. To stop corrosion use ACF50 or GT85.

@@tishtosh hi, thanks for watching. This is the standard rack that came with this model. I don’t use panniers as they don’t fit - instead i use the Brompton rack bag which I really like. If I’m not using the bag I can put a tent on it and my stuff in the front bag 👍

I already have the stock Brompton rack and as brilliant as it is, they specifically mention fitting panniers to their rack! Presumably the "small Ortleibs" they refer to are the Front Roller panniers.

I surely join in your love for Brompton :-) How do you handle rust inside the frame. I can see some when I look into the frame through the folded joint.

Each Brompton frame is treated so the surface rust will not penetrate into the main metal of the frame. The surface rust inside my frame has always been the same and never changed so I just don’t give it another thought. Older Brompton used to rust out but modern ones are much better. Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks so much for watching! So happy you also love your Brompton. For light gravel I am more than happy with the Marathon Plus tyres - you just have to be a bit careful on bigger, wet rocks. On the Brompton Explore bike which was brought out a few years ago (although not sure if it’s still available) they use the Schwalbe Marathon Racer tyres. Happy Cycling!

We do love our bromptons. I do more cycling with the bromp than all the other bikes combined 👍

I have a B75 that I modded with an electric kit, amongst other mods. Great bike for commuting. The weakness for me is the brakes. Wish they could be beefed up a bit. Everything else is fine.

@@veloworks9266 From what I've heard the rear disk needs a new rear frame triangle. Far too much hassle. And of course the front disc is a non starter due to the motor being there.

I've had my Brompton for over 20 years. Maintenance-wise, the only things that annoy me are that the wheel rims wear out more quickly than on a 'normal-sized' bike, and replacing the bushes on the rear suspension is not as easy as it could be. I made up my own reamer for the suspension job, as the official Brompton tool is a joke price! Years ago, I also had a Moulton APB (I can't remember which model). It had a rock-solid frame, which made the Brompton feel like a lump of rubber! The Moulton was definitely nicer to ride, but it wouldn't fit in my car boot, or under the table in my front room, so I chose to keep the Brompton.

Perfect bike for portability. Never a fan of the wide gearing and shift gear designed by the guy who invented the Macarena, but the convenience means it is easy to be at your side most anywhere you want to road ride. Some bikes adapt to you, some you adapt to.

Thank you for watching and taking the time to write. Totally agree with you - we have only just started doing videos so it’s a learning curve. We just use a phone so have ordered a little mic for the next one which should improve it. Also not going out on windy days 😂

So. My experience is broadly similar to everyone else. I love my M6l in flame lacquer. The trouble is I love it too much according to my LBS. 20 miles round trip, 3-4 times a week is too much apparently. I am just about to replace BB, sprockets, chain, rear wheel, brake pads and a full service to boot and it’s costing circa £400. I suppose usage has its costs but I choked a bit on this.

Thanks for watching! We talk regularly to customers about how to view large bills on their bikes. Usually the higher bills come with the higher mileage bikes and the best thing to do is to add up the amount of miles you have done since the last service. Then take the cost of the service and parts and divide this by the amount of miles you've done. So if you do 80 miles a week for 52 weeks of the year = 4160 miles. And you have it serviced once a year... Then if your bill is £400 you are only paying £0.097p per mile! That is a bargain!

Ahh bike obsession. In the eye of the beholder.

As a former Brompton owner, gearing is what made me get rid of it on top of the usual faffing and proprietary parts which I have put up with. However, I've been cycling for the past 15 years or so without any gearing issues but boy was I in the wrong gear with the brompton almost every time and it was a wide range 6 speed. 2nd to gearing was the noise, riding it was like walking with a pocket full of keys and change rattling about. 3rd was the ever slipping seatpost. Sold it this year after owning it for about 2 years. It's a great exercise in engineering but for the average cyclist that enjoys riding in the right gear every time, it will be a pain.

On Pauls roadbike he is able to find the exact gear he needs. With the Brompton he treats it more as a single speed with 6 gear options! It's not the quietest bike but Paul has found a weird love for his where he only sees the good in it haha!

Surely one of the strengths of the hub gear is that, should you find yourself in the wrong gear, you can change it so easily - even when stationary. The slipping seat post is fixable.

@@kentwydell9322 I'm not talking about shifting, I'm talking about gearing. Touching the seatpost with my bare hand while handling the bike is what caused seatpost slippage, no longer folding the bike to avoid having to deal with it (degrease the seatpost and sleeve) negated its most important feature: the fold.

Nice video.. and the info about tyre pressure and cleaning i think was great advice so thank you ..... i only had my Bromton C Line explore 1 week . love it but the gears are slipping in the lower gears ( hill gears ) and the guy at the shop gave me a reduced gearing i think it was - 12 % ?? those are a little too easy and walking would quicker than riding up any hill in those gears .. my guess is the standard gearing would have been better.. It is very rarely that i need the lowest gears ( lowest as in the easiest settings ) A 4 speed would be better than a 6 speed . the 6 speed is only for steepish hills IMo or weak people who are maybe getting on or have weak knees etc.

Thanks for watching! It would be worth getting the gears looked at again if they are slipping, especially if it's a new bike. It is either a small adjustment or an issue with the hub. It is also worth bearing in mind that internal hub gears do like the rider to pause pedalling while changing gear to allow the gears to engage. Happy Cycling!

I would advise you not to ride the bike until you have addressed the slipping gear problem. Apart from the danger to yourself, the hub gear will be ruined. It is a simple adjustment. If that doesn't fix it either your hub gear is faulty or the cable is sticking somewhere.

I love your Brompton too, though not as much as I love mine. Cutting the rear mudguard is something I am going to do, in homage (and cuz it makes sense). Question is, what is the best thing to use to cut it? A hacksaw?

Hi Simon, I used a hacksaw blade, long and sturdy, taken off of a larger hacksaw. The finer teeth the better. This is because you can't get a hacksaw in the rear triangle. I cut the longer section first straight, then the two side bits on a 45 degree angle then used a file to make it nice. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)

Hi Andy, this is the P6R - they no longer make the P bars and these bikes are quite expensive now on the second hand market. If I was to get a new model now it would be the C line explore with the lacquered finish 👍

@@veloworks9266 I had to push upslope a lot on the Camino de Santiago. Esp with the gear I carried. Hope the 40T chainring will help. Recently I cycled in NZ with a hardtail, got more gears 👍. Can do better

Hi, thanks for watching. Brompton themselves say they are rated up to 110kg with luggage on (the combined system weight). Not sure about other folding bikes but worth contacting dealers. We have ridden Dahons, Bike Fridays and Moulton - all wonderful bikes but a google will let you know their combined system weight. Good luck!

I don’t like my Brompton - I’ve had mine about 5 years and it’s gradually faded from use. I now use a tourer to get around Bristol. I found the Brompton really slow on hills, heavy to carry, and, let’s face it, expensive to buy…..on the other hand having watched this, I might give it another try 😊

us too!! They are the best - we are getting Sarah a Brompton soon and I wish she could have the option. Although someone does do 'compact P bars' on etsy but we have no experience of them. Thanks for watching.

I love mine also but I keep having numbness even with the cambium. Any thoughts on a saddle choice?

Hi, thanks for watching. When you really look into it saddle choice can be quite specific to the individual. It might be worth visiting a bike shop that have a range of saddles - they should have test saddles you can use if they sell a range so you can try before you buy. Good luck.

P.S Paul has the C-17 Carved Cambium which is a bit more forgiving.

I enjoyed listening to your love affair with the Brompton. They are around here in Texas but not many. I'm considering one. Do you think the Brompton would survive a 270 lbs. rider for very long. What do you suppose the problem areas might be? I really need a mechanics point of view. Thanks, man...Fred, Houston, Texas

Hi Fred, thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! You are just within the weight limit for a Brompton so ideally there should be no issues. The wheels are super strong because they have smaller spokes and as long as they aren’t abused. Like me you’ll need to put a firmer suspension block on the back (see our other upgrade video). They are great fun! Happy cycling

Do you ever change the oil in the rear hub and if so how often?

Hi, no I don’t. The BWR is a non serviceable therefore it doesn’t need oil. You can access the bearings on the non drive side to put some grease in. 👍

Yes, I too would like to get a Rolls Royce. I had a Lincoln, but it got stolen. Currently I have a Malibu. Translation; Dahon with the Ford badge was stolen, currently I have folding bike from California but made in China called X Spec. My dream folding bike is a Brompton.

Hi Andrew thanks for watching and commenting. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything other that light gravel paths personally. Because of the small wheel size, rocks hit further up the wheel and cause it to be much more of an uncomfortable ride.

Love my Brompton and I want to use it on that pump track. Can you tell me the location please?

Hi, thanks for watching! It's actually in Bristol. So much fin though - it was quite slippery so will go again when dry!

The small wheels, and the dynamo on top, gives an even, constant harder ride, so I would prefer to bring and extra battery, if I need to charge a phone! But the ultra small fold still makes it special (I also own an 18 volt Makita, which is heavy as Hell and doesn't fold to more than ½ a bike!). Finn. Denmark

Hi thanks for taking the time to comment and watch our video. I find the Brompton is as fast as the person on it and don’t feel much resistance from the dynamo personally 👍

@@veloworks9266 The small wheels are a constant resistance in themselves, even helped a little by the higher Brompton pressure, and with more rolling resistance than larger wheels, so a little more isn't essential for its practicality of course. As a bike it is still a horrible bike! I own a modified 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton with a lot of added titanium and carbon for less weight. You may do what you do on an ordinary bike, and I do like mine for being able to be brought around to anywhere, but you still have to be much more fit to do the same job, as on an ordinary bike 😁! There is a reason why MTBs now use 29" wheels. Finn. Denmark

For me, when I ride my Brompton it gives me so much joy and excitement, I’m happy to but the extra effort in 👍 It’s not a bike for everyone but one I love dearly

@@veloworks9266 A Brompton is a bike for special purposes, and I have brought it for vacations primarily. My dear wife won't allow me to take it Malta (we are both 75), which was my primary target. We normally lives down there in a Danish owned and built Vacation Village (Mellieha), and it would be perfect to ride round on the small Island/State, but people down there drives in the wrong side on narrow roads with much traffic, so we decided it wasn't such a good idea!
