Crit Race: • Hamilton Wheelers Twig...
The Cannondale SystemSix is promoted heavily for its speed. Cannondake say it's faster everyone, with exception of hill climbs over a 6% gradient. Could this be true? I will be going into deeper territory next week, where I share my head to head review on this bike VS the SuperSix. However, first up in this video I will explain what I generally don't like about the SystemSix - which comes with Caden carbon wheels and SRAM Force AXS eTap - and then I will share with you what I LOVE about this bike. Following, we'll go behind the scenes, sharing with you what it's been like getting back into criterium racing and what my wife Alice has been up to.

I've got a Cervelo S3 in the same colour and is a photocopy of the systemsix. Crazy bike but I think you are correct the market is moving on with a bigger focus on comfort on the right day it's so fast. When I got it to be honest I was not happy felt like I was getting beaten with a stick. Changed tires, tubes, and finally changed wheelset and went tubeless now really happy with it. That first ride I wasn't sure I'd want to do 40k on it now I'd be happy all day

The only time I go over 40kph is going down hill. I have a love hate relationship with my current bike - a Trek Domane. I love the comfort factor, especially lack of road buzz through the hands, but I always feel I traded down, when I upgraded from my Fondriest TF2 ( I could at times nudge 40kph on the flats with this)... Comes to upgrade it will not be the Endurance / cobble busting bicycle again, I would aim for an aeroish bike.

I think it depends. The top spec bike may have a harsher ride quality than the non Hi-MOD. I bought the "entry-level" SystemSix - with mechanical Ultegra. I'm sure the spec is lower all the way around - but it came with flat aero profile bars, and Vision 55's for wheels. It is a fantastic bike and as a recreational rider I have found it plenty compliant for all of my riding. I ride mostly on my own - pacing is low 30's kph when I push, and sub 30 when I take it easy. Longest ride to date is 110 km. I was hoping to build up to a century ride this summer - but life gets in the way. Don't rule it out if you really wanted it!!

Chris Gilligan Quite the contrary. I’m just thinking I may not get any more comfortable than my current CAAD12 set up 😅. Our local bike shop has the older version of the variant you chose. Ultegra+8 spoke SI crank set+Fulcrum wheels (shallow depth)+Metron4D+Trimax stem+Prologo saddle. I much prefer the model you got over this though. Oh and I’m not a great competitive cyclist by any stretch of the imagination. I’m mostly a commuter that prefers going fast and smashing PBs on a road bike 😎

Hey Cam - great content all the time about training, and bike reviews! I have to call foul on that hate part of the SystemSix ride quality. Granted I haven't ridden a ton of bikes to compare it against. But I'm a pure recreational rider who has never had the legs for 40 kph sustained pace and I love everything about my SystemSix, including the ride quality. I ride generally on tertiary roads in where the pavement is anything but smooth and new, and I have taken it out for as long as 3.5 hours continuous (no coffee shops - get on the saddle and ride for 3.5 hours) and have never felt that "get me off this bike it's punishing me" feeling.

@@CamNicholls Thanks Cam. I'm not sure if it would affect the ride quality - but I bought the bike as motivation to get back into riding and being out of shape - I am a long way from "slamming the stem" to get the full aero experience of the bike. I train mostly on my own and there is no doubt that the aero makes a difference....even at my modest pace in the low 30's kph.

Again I'm not sure how much difference it makes in terms of compliance....but I don't have the top of the range model. Maybe there is some additional stiffness in the "Hi-MOD" frame, wheels or whatever else in the top spec. I'm also rolling on 25's at 80 psi which helps the comfort.

This video steered me away from the systemsix last year, and I'm glad it did because I just bought one a few days ago in better shape with better components and wheelset for the same price :) The previous owner had tubeless 28mm gp5000 TL on it already and I immediately felt how comfortable the bike was compared to my 2021 Giant Propel Pro, 2021 Cervelo S-Series, 2021 Cube Agree C62 SL and 2020 BMC Roadmachine. Although it's quite heavy compared to the recent aero road bikes, it's still insanely fast for its weight. The tires the bike came with makes it way too stiff.

I've had a SystemSix for a while and can endorse the points made on speed. I have the KNOT 64 wheels and ran them from the start on 25mm tubeless. At 70 psi they roll nicely and cope with rough British roads pretty well. Whilst it's not as smooth as my Domane, I don't ever get back from rides feeling beaten up by it, well not by the handling anyway 😄.

Hi Cam. I keep re-watching your reviews of the Systemsix and the Reacto and I am confused about which one to buy? I currently have a 2011 Supersix that is still in good nick, is my current race bike, and I will keep as a training bike. I actually joined the Hamilton Wheelers late last year, started in E grade after many years off the bike and have just stepped up a few weeks ago for my first D grade race which went great. In some of the comments you replied to, you allude to the fact that the Systemsix is faster . . . JUST, than the Reacto. Was your experience of this difference in speed in acceleration, ability to hold top speed for extended periods, or both? If they are indeed very close in speed, do you think this slight difference in speed is worth the $2300 sales price difference?

Not surprising if the system six isn't as comfortable as something like the aeroad. The system six was designed to be the most aero bike for racing with some wind tunnel tests saying its THE most aero. That's probably why Canyon decided to sacrifice some aerodynamics for comfort with their latest models.

It depends. I am typically in the low to mid 30's sustained solo pace depending on fitness level. But I've also taken it out on leisurely rides under 30 kph and in all cases I have found the bike plenty compliant. Full disclosure, I have left some of the spacers in the stem so I'm not taking full advantage of the aero position....but this is what works for me right now with my level of fitness and flexibility. And I find it a joy to ride.

Systemsix looks good in neon color, but in black the front end looks sooo bad. Don't know why. But compared to trek madone or reacto/venge(same bikes) they look consistently good in all colors.
